According to JAG it is sexist if a man explains something to a woman. Good to know. My wife’s life just got considerably less interesting and considerably more difficult.
It seems however it is still ok for women to explain stuff to men. Also good to know. My life is not affected.
Thanks for explaining JAG.

        I am in the same camp as you KS. It is interesting that Bomber and No Right Turn are starting to think like this. It is starting to look like the traditional definitions of left and right have fractured over free speech and identity politics and this is a good thing.
        Bomber and his ilk generally want the same end destination as I do but we just choose to take wildly different paths to get there maybe this fracture will allow us to finally to talk to, as opposed to past, each other and this long term is a good thing.

    I’m not quite sure what to make of the whole mansplaining concept.
    
    I don’t doubt it has some validity. I don’t doubt there are cases of men using “explanation” as an excuse to talk-over or shutdown women, whether or not they actually know anything about the topic they claim to be explaining.
    
    But on the other hand the term seems to be frequently abused. You can’t just label any case where a man explains something to a woman as mansplaining. There are times when a man knows something a woman doesn’t, just as there are times a woman knows something a man doesn’t.
    
    The motive behind the explanation and the manner in which it is delivered are what matters. Not having seen the National party ad I can’t speak to whether I think it qualifies.

      They need to hit the left in their strong holds. The young and newly voting, who have never really lived and experienced left wing governments, and Maori and Pacific Islanders.
      Bypass the MSM and do adverts on Youtube. No restrictions this far out from the next election. That way the young voters are aware of the issues. Not sure on the best way to get the messages to tribal labour Maori and PI families, but National does have some very smart people who could come up with some bright ideas.

    Yes, we should start reducing our risk to the Chinese economy. Officially the Debt to GDP is ~47% but this hides local government and state sector debts.
    
    The International Institute of Finance puts their debt (in 2017) at 300%. It’s probably well advanced of that by now.

        The Chinese debt bomb is the largest, that’s why. Their government seems to have this notion that they can just spend their way to prosperity, for example, by building empty concrete cities.
        
        At least with the USA, they’re allowing individual enterprise to go forward which may over time decrease the US debt problem – decreasing unemployment, increasing employment etc.
        
        France is f*cked but doesn’t greatly concern us as a country. They may fix themselves but I wouldn’t bet on it. The Yellow Vest protests seem to be more about “Give us free stuff and have someone else pay for it”. With that type of attitude, I doubt France will be dig themselves out of the (debt) hole they’ve created.

  The /l/ and /r/ thing is not a problem for a Mandarin speaker. Although interestingly, and I didn’t know this, the position of the l and r in the word may make it more difficult to pronounce. I never knew that.

  A very small pedantic point.
  
  In my experience (most people I know and mix with speak either Cantonese or Chinese as a first language) Chinese do not confuse ‘r’ and ‘l’. Some Cantonese speakers do have trouble distinguishing ‘n’ and ‘l’ – say ‘knee’, ‘lee’ and ‘ree’ to know which consonants are close in physical articulation.
  
  Given my incompetence in these languages, I’m disinclined to mock their native speakers’ errors in English. More generally, the obsession some people have with others’ pronunciation, whether it is Simon’s broad kiwi accent or Jacinda’s t/d combination is mostly tedious and distracting.

    Except in Southland-Otago, New Zealanders usually under-pronounce, or drop, “r” after vowels. He sold his “cah”, that’s too “fah” away.
    
    And we tend to pronounce the vowel “i” as “u”. Ever heard someone talking about “chucken”?
    
    Our speech is changing continuously. Earlier generation New Zealanders pronounced “dance” and “chance” with the short “a”, as most Aussies do.
    
    The effect of Polynesian accents on Auckland speech especially will be interesting. It could lead to a stronger regional accent there.
    
    If I were a billionaire, I would fund regional radio stations in Otago-Southland to preserve the local accent.

  I was there with my father in 1975. At the abbey looking down on the town. In 1944 he never got up there. All he said was “no wonder they could drop mortars on us at will, they could see our every movement.” Whether the German observers were next to or in the monastery was moot to the Kiwi soldiers under observation. All they saw was that great building looking down on them.

    In war, mistakes are made. It’s where the phrase fog or cloud of war comes from. At the time the NZ generals were in charge of the attack and at the time, it was perceived that the German defenders were in the Abbey using it to observe.
    It was the right decision to make, getting the USA bombers to flatten it, but only in hind sight could they realise it was unneeded.
    Also I don’t automatically down tick Milky, but he does get a lot of down ticks from me. Every comment gets read before I uptick or down tick. Except for a commentator from years back. philU who used to only post in some demented poetry or something. That got an auto downtick from me…

      My grandfather was killed in Italy two weeks before the end of the war in Europe. The official story from the NZ Army was that the Germans were responsible. The soldiers he served with including his brother in law who was severely injured in the attack said it was the Yanks that were responsible for the attack and that it was not the Germans.

  Italy campaign was run by the amateur yanks.
  Allies best general Montgomery was moved out of Italy after his highly successful Sicily invasion. He was needed for D Day of course but he said the yanks were going about Italy the wrong way. The yanks got him out of Italy as quick as possible.
  
  Montgomery then went on to salvage the terrible American planning for D Day.

      What he did in India and Burma with the limited resources was incredible. Because India was a minor arena as far as resources were concerned, it didn’t get the coverage either before or after the war I deserved.

      Not sure who you think was better than Montgomery? He won in North Africa, Sicily & with out his planning D Day could have failed. He planned the Normandy break out. He stablised the American front during battle of Bulge. There after Eisenhower poured away tens of thousand of American lives after Montgomery had secured the break out attempt.
      
      The Rhine crossing was expertly planned despite bitter German resistance. Battle of Arnhem was a response to the stupid American decesion to invade Southern France which stripped the Allies of resources where needed. Arhhem was a narrow strike to end the Third Reich in 1944 given the Allies limited resources. It wasnt a executed properly but the idea reflected reality. The war dragged on for another 8 months.

        As I said , very generous . Take North Africa for instance he won there because Barbarossa had started and the Afrika struggled to get resupplied while the allies started to have huge amounts of men and material pouring in . Even then he was over cautious..

  To fail to take a position isn’t a defeat! The New Zealand Divison didn’t surrender.
  
  The German airborne troops at Monte Cassino were fine soldiers, and they had the advantage of good cover, especially after the bombing, and the advantage of having the high position. Most of them retreated just before the Poles captured the top in the final assault.
  
  The German airborne troops were also tough (and successful) opponents on Crete.

        It was every bit as much a defeat for the NZ Division. Freyberg had been pessimistic about the chances of success, and set a casualty limit, which was reached. He is said to have remarked that he didn’t want to see ‘another Passchendaele’, which was enough to convince his senior commanders also that the end had been reached.       My father was captured in Greece and spent several years as a POW.
      They were transported across Europe to Austria without little food. He told us he’d never been so hungry. Years later I was watching a kids lolly scramble with him and out of the blue he told me hated them. He never liked to watch anyone fighting over food as he’d seen his mates do when they were prisoners.
      He never went to the RSA or Anzac Day functions. He didn’t like hanging out with old soldiers unless they were blokes he knew; one or two of them had some demons to contend with.
      Dad was in the troop ship on the high seas in Jan-40 and back at the end of 45. Together with the Depression made for a trying time the likes of which I’m grateful not to have been inflicted by.
      People grizzle about Key or Ardern or the country being invaded by unruly Poms need to get a grip.

  Eventually it was the Poles who got through the German line to break the deadlock. NZ’ers (Maori battalion) got into the town and held it for a bit but couldn’t hold it or be reinforced adequately so had to withdraw.
  
  I think Cassino showed Freyburg’s shortcomings as a commander, he was good as a divisional general but lacked imagination and capability at a higher level to plan effective attacks. The eventual success happened because the Free French scaled some very difficult terrain over the river and were able to make many of the German defensive positions untenable, and that allowed the Poles to storm the town and hill.

    I am unaware of any enactment or piece of common law indicating that the Police are the only ones who can collect evidence. The acceptability of the evidence depends on the circumstances at the time. The Police do not have an unblemised record in the collection of evidence.
    As long as the evidence (if any) is carefully collected and those involved can give a sensible account of how it is collected there should be no problem. Assuming that it is safe to use cameras in the mine (intrinsically safe ones if need be) the site of the evidence and the actual evidence collection can be filmed.
    An archaeologist (if a willing one can be found) would be the most skilled evidence collector and can be briefed on forensic implications.

      The only advantage of charging the CEO is a ‘feel good’ factor. It is doubtful that he would be found guilty especially as some potentially key witnesses are no longer in NZ and cannot be compelled to return to NZ to give evidence.

        And that is another problem with evidence. As charges would be a criminal matter, there is on obligation on potential witnesses to testify on things that may incriminate themselves.
        That others knew of breaches does not let the CEO off the hook.
        Interestingly some employees found alternative employment in Australia etc to escape potential hazards, and would be the witnesses needed for any prosecution. Employees who could not readily find alternative employment stuck it out despite the risk.
        The book “Tragedy at Pike River” describes the background to the disaster and indicated that the project would have been uneconomic if two proper entrances had to be provided. Most libraries should have a copy.

        Rangitoto – It was a private enterprise project perceived as a potential profit centre for O&G shareholders. O&G was hell bent on proceeding. There was no other specific importance for the project. They could not get consent for an open cast project (arguments on this are irrelevant in the present context).
        At that point the options were a two shaft project which was uneconomic or a one and a half shaft (the half being iron rung steps up a vertical ventilation shaft) project which was the only way the project could be economic. The acceptability of this option was dubious to say the least – it might have been OK on a fine day assuming everything went sweetly and paranoid safety requirements were adopted in the mine. However the scenario turned to custard very quickly and because of the amount already spent no one was prepared to pull the chicken lever (astronauts’ slang for the mission abort lever). That the earlier consent had been declined (or not sought in the face of opposition I cannot remember) is not to blame, nor can it be used as an excuse for shortcuts.

        Experts world wide could queue up to testify that the mine design was against sound practice–a gas producing fault seam is unsafe in a non-opencast mine. The former CEO is far down the chain of responsibility. I believe even DOC is implicated in refusing to allow an open cast mine.

        The trouble is, the more wealthy the person or entity the greater ability they have to avoid the tax like moving assets offshore. So a CGT is unlikely to hit the ultra wealthy particularly hard but hit ordinary hard working people the hardest via baches, Kiwisaver etc. And even these people will change investment and lifestyle habits such as having excessively large homes and purchasing unproductive assets such as BMW’s.

        Sooty – yes. In the old days (pre Helen Clark) Ministers were entitled to two self drive cars in addition to access to the CR limos. One was to keep in the electorate and the other in Wellington. But then MP and Ministerial remuneration was rather megre then. The MP for the old Southern Maori seat (whole SI plus southern bit of NI) also had two self drive cars (one in each Island) as well as a high travel allowance.

        Winston would have had to fork out a similar figure so far if not more. He had to pay costs for the journos he took to court as part of a fishing expedition. I News indicated that Stephen Joyce and Bill English had been removed as defendants and assuming the Crown took on their defence the Crown should be able to claim costs from Winston (and if not because of political pressure that would be corruption).
        Having to let go Bill English must have been a bitter blow for Winston since he was the major ‘trophy’ that Winston was after.
        Seems the only ‘live’ issue is whether a departmental CEO is able to pass on ‘personal’ type information to the Responsible Minister.

      The main TV transmitting sites (Mt KauKau etc) would spew out more radiation from their multiple transmitters than any amount of 5G. Also the denser the coverage the more feeble is the 5G signal in both directions, since the required coverage area is quite small and the same frequencies are used for other sites a few km away.

  Once more for the luddites: Non-ionising radiation is zero-impact at the sort of power levels used for communications. The only thing it does is warm your skin up imperceptibly. Add to that the skin depth (distance it can penetrate into a conducting material like your body) for the higher frequency 5G spectrum (mostly 24-90GHz, with a very small band at 6GHz) is tiny, less than 0.5mm, that’s far less than lower (2.4-5GHz) frequency spectrum from existing cellphones and wireless communications that do not show any health dangers. Normal sun exposure and cosmic rays are way way more dangerous.

That would be no worse than an ordinary phone and indeed the total ‘use’ for each meter would would be far, far less than a teenager’s phone. Then second, we learn last night that the developer of a Pukekohe development is trying to entice potential buyers with $5000 of furniture or whitewave. As Judith Collins put it, it is now KiwiBribe!

My wife came home with a gem last night that also gives an indication of why NZ has such a broke welfare system and poor productivity.

My wife works in an industry which pays commonly minimum wage and is very much a disorganized shambles.

Therefore, it is common for workers to try it on and milk the system. The common way this is done is via the ACC system with the aid of doctors.

She has given me many examples of where doctors visits for non accidents and pre existing conditions are claimed for under ACC.

The latest was a staff member who had insect bites that have gone septic. Wife told woman to go to the doctor to get it seen to before it turned worse. Sure enough woman requires intravenous antibiotics and is off work as she handles food stuffs. But the killer is, the doctor gave the woman ACC form and is passing the treatment of for an accident.

Wife tells me, I get indignant, she says it is common. I say it shouldn’t be. We look at ACC website. Sure enough the case i highlighted shouldn’t be getting ACC, but why is it? Why are doctors aiding and abetting a rort of the ACC system?

  I was talking to my doc about that last month, she said she has people making appointments for cuts and scratches and she can’t not see them. Has everyone turned into an absolute sissy or are mothers just inept. ACC needs to get back to it’s core business of accidents only and mothers need to buy a first aid kit.
  
  When I was about five I nearly cut my thumb off with a hand saw (my father nearly fainted when he saw the bone), but we never even thought of going to the doctor. A good wash under the tap and a band aid (I have a good scar though).

        I’m by no means au fait with ACC legislation just their attitude, “we’re all arseholes”….
        
        “A proximate cause” (apologies for the earlier mis spellinng…fast fingers now I’m a toy boy) is as follows…
        
        “In law, a proximate cause is an event sufficiently related to an injury that the courts deem the event to be the cause of that injury. There are two types of causation in the law: cause-in-fact, and proximate (or legal) cause.”

  The first month I lived in NZ (1992) there were 2 ACC cases in the news:
  
  * Bloke bit on a bit of unexpected bone in a pie and broke his tooth. Compensation disallowed.
  * Prisoner injected himself with some muck. His arm got infected and had to have his arm amputated. Compensation allowed.

    Prisoner attempting a jail break, falls and broke his arm and leg and got ACC.
    
    The issue in this instance and probably also the case you refer to was, should a person receive ACC for an injury sustained in the pursuit of an illegal activity? In both instances, they would not have got injured if they hadn’t been doing what they were at the time.
    
    As for the case of shooting yourself up with muck, whether in jail or not, how can this be deemed an accident?
    
    Based on these incidents it is a reasonable assumption that the ACC scheme has been broken for some time.

      There was a tragic pre-ACC case (in workers compo era).
      Foreman asked tradie to work on live switchboard (too inconvenient to turn off power). Tradie refused. Foreman asked apprentice to work on it – he too refused. Foreman worked on it himself and got zapped. Foreman’s family then asked for compo even though was utterly negligent. Compo not paid as foreman obviously at fault (I was going to use a stronger description but would be absolutely non PC now).

My partner and me recently got a new 55 Samsing tv and the picture quality is absolutely amazing. You can even change chanels and volume just by talking to it. I watched QT again yesterday hopping to catch a glimpse of what Sarah D was wearing but they never seem to focus on her now. One thing I have notived this week is that we no longer have those deaf and dump people up in the corner of the screen doing the stuff with there hands. Not sure if thats just our new telly or they realized what a distaction it was to normal viewers.

The China issue is generating plenty of talk. Unfortunately, it seems to be mainly partisan talk about whether we need/ want a relationship with China / America; the differing ideologies regarding economics, trade, spying, foreign investment, military alliances etc.

All interesting debates, perhaps, but they miss the point. Foreign affairs are primarily about diplomacy. If you want to set up a trade agreement or withdraw from one; if you want to make or break alliances, foster friendships or manage enemies, you do it carefully. The bigger the issue, the more carefully it should be handled.

This apprently sudden, public blow-up by China is the result of mismanagement over some months by NZ. Regardless of any personal ideological theories of commentators or politicians, China are a major trading partner, with close ties, a relationship which needs managing.

Adern and her government have shown themselves to be scandalously incompetent, and woefully ingnorant about the basics of international relations, and diplomacy.

That is the scandal.

    I think we just fell naturally into the arms of China. After all, the USA wouldn’t (and still won’t) negotiate a FTA with us despite our military and diplomatic support of them over decades, and China wanted to buy our ‘healthy’ dairy and other food products.
    
    We’ve annoyed the Australians by scrapping our armed forces, sending them our criminals and bludgers and loudly trying to stop them from protecting their territory from illegals…. but so far they haven’t actually cut the ties and set us adrift, so I think we should be pretty grateful for small mercies.
    
    Chinese history shows that they don’t colonise. They acquire vassal (tributary) states. New Zealand hasn’t yet become a vassal state, but it’s probably well on the way.
    
    We won’t actually be required to set up a social credit system or supply military bases. We’ll probably just find that our economy will start to shrink of we make international waves against their (quite justified IMHO) suppression of internal radical Islam or criticise them too much in other ways.
    
    I don’t think the people themselves or their culture are inherently ‘bad’; quite the contrary actually. But it’s a good thing that we are now waking up to the potential downside of their totalitarian regime. To negotiate with this, we need diplomacy and a good feel for cultural nuance – which the SLG doesn’t seem to have. National has it a lot more.
    
    It’s always sobering to remember that NZ has less than 20% of the population of Shanghai and probably an even lower economic clout than this in financial terms.

  Evadne – I was thinking something similar yesterday. I was thinking for example of how the WW2 Labour Govt of Fraser and Nash managed NZ’s international relations with the great powers – the UK, then the USA (and of course Australia all along), how they were respected and put NZ’s interests on the world stage i.e. NZ sat at the “big table” etc.
  
  Contrast to this to today’s incompetent, out of their depth COL Labour govt and PM, who’s only “success” seems to be to piss off our allies (Australia and the US) and then to make matters worse appear to be insulting China … but unlike say insulting Japan 70 odd years ago, this time around the US does not have NZ’s back (for protection).
  
  NZ is adrift in very unsettling times and this may be an “extreme” phrase for me to use so take it at face value … but it seems like the current Labour Govt are “sleepwalking their way to war” (worse case scenario of course). 🙁

    Ardern has left Peters to his own devices, and we know from past experience that’s a very dangerous strategy. Say hello to our new masters. No, not the Chinese.

The 2019 TCEC cup was won by a new challenger, the neural network AI system called Leela Chess Zero. That earned Leela the right to challenge the mighty champion Chess engine Stockfish in the “super final”. The final is played out over 100 games and Stockfish took the early lead but after 54 games completed, Leela now leads by 8 wins to 6 with the rest drawn. The interesting thing is that the games Leela lost were where Leela made an obvious blunder, whereas Stockfish rarely if ever makes an outright blunder. When Leela wins it seems to be by gradually manouevering Stockfish into losing positions by relentless pressure. Stockfish is a kind of brute force programme that evaluates billions of moves against some complicated evaluation rules, whereas Leela just starts off knowing the rules and learns to play well by playing lots of games against itself. Both of these programmes are rated about 600 points higher than the human chess champion Magnus Carlsen.

Leela’s cousin, the Google deep mind project Alpha Zero has already demolished an earlier version of Stockfish and also defeated the best human Go players. In it’s latest incarnation, Alpha Zero is a champion Starcraft player.

The AI’s are coming folks.

  It’s very difficult to say what the outcome would have been.
  
  Once Germany failed to defeat Britain in 1940, Germany was far too strong to be defeated, but not strong enough to guarantee victory in the near future.
  
  In 1918 Germany was defeated in part because Allied control of the sea denied Germany access to the western hemisphere’s food, fertilisers, strategic raw materials and oil, and attempts to defeat Allied control of the sea had brought the US into the Allied camp. Hitler controlled Europe in 1940, but Europe was deficient in food and oil; without these Germany could not confidently resist a contentinental power such as the US and it could not confidently rely on the USSR to supply any shortfall, nor on Romanian oil which was vulnerable to Soviet air and land attack should Stalin decide to smash fascism while Hitler faced West.
  
  Meanwhile, Germany was already facing food and fuel shortages. One German general recommended de-motorising some of the army’s divisions because of lack of fuel. Opel suspended manufacturing trucks for a while because it couldn’t get petrol to test them.
  
  Operation Barbarossa was not just an ideological blow against Jewish Bolshevism; it was a pragmatic solution to the looming confrontation with the US.

  To be fair judgements will have to apportioned by bloodline percentages. That could be satisfied by a Court of the required ethnic composition or proportional sentencing according to relevant tribal customs. Utu may have to be allowed in some circumstances and rules as to judicial homicide revised.

  It still goes on to a degree in similar cultures.
  It used to be quite common for P I women to lose babies after being beaten while pregnant.
  I recall in the 80s the health authorities were blaming Polynesian massage for the high rate of still born babies here in NZ.

  He had the odd good poem. I like his Ballad of Calvary St and Eulogy for an unknown soldier. But overall, as someone who has a great love of english, (have read probably 2000+ books in my life) I think the less poetry in school the better and most certainly the less English literature/poetry as taught by English BA’s filled with approved cultural agendas and general woke stupidity the better. The shit books we were forced to read as a result of their propagandising fashions and passions were fucking torture even in my day.

    Still, I didn’t have to endure the crap my kids were forced to read at secondary school in English
    – only NZ authors (mainly female)
    
    Fortunately both took other subjects Classics/Drama where they were exposed to a greater canon of writing than that of NZ’s literati.

      I’ve read works by about half of those authors for personal interest (including all of shakespeare writings). And I enjoyed most of them. No the really bad stuff was all the NZ authored garbage that was forced upon us. Keri bloody Hulme, Janet Frame, Ian Cross, Peter Hooper, every tedious poet ever whelped in NZ.         In retrospect, I got a pretty good intro to
        US short story writing, a general coverage of English novels, an excellent intro to mid 20th C literature and much encouragement to read widely beyond the curriculum.
        
        I seem to be reading less the older I get…. might soon be time to check out talking books.

Suppression has just been lifted on the Blomfield versus Slater defamation case, which found that Slater had no credible defence – this is after numerous delays since the case started in 2012.

NZ Herald: Whaleoil blogger Cameron Slater loses defamation case and gets told: ‘Your day will come’

Whaleoil blogger Cameron Slater has lost one of the country’s longest running defamation cases after failing to put up any credible defence.

The judgment has been greeted as “magnificent” by businessman Matthew Blomfield, who sued Slater for defamation after a series of blog posts in 2012 accused him of illegal and immoral behaviour.

The judgment recorded Slater had made claims in a blog post which included saying the “Blomfield files” would expose “drugs, fraud, extortion, bullying, corruption, collusion, compromises, perjury, deception, (and) hydraulic-ing”.

Blomfield said: “Finally there is something solid out in the public domain to show that all of Cameron Slater’s nonsense was just that, nonsense.

“As this judgment clearly shows, he was given every possible chance to show that he had a defence to my defamation claim, but in the end he could produce nothing.”

The judgment made public today saw Justice Paul Davison find in Blomfield’s favour, ruling out a defence from Slater after long delays and failures to meet legal requirements to defend a claim of defamation.

Slater has taken the judgment to the Court of Appeal. There is yet to be a ruling on what the loss will cost Slater.

As an aside, I will shortly declare that I will be challenging Nicky Wagner as National’s candidate for Christchurch Central.
It’s unusual to publicly discuss such a move, but as Kiwiblog is a bastion for the right, I would like to invite the Christchurch readers in particular to contact me – and share their thoughts as to what they think are the priorities for National’s Christchurch Central MP, and National in general.
