  Mickmac – thanks for posting the excellent article. It is easy to be sceptical about “climate change” when it used to be called “global warming” but the name got changed because things weren’t warming up fast enough it seems? The fact of the matter is that if we New Zealanders culled all of our cows and shut down all of our powerplants it would make absolutely no difference to the temperature of the earth.
  I am sure that everyone wants to look after the planet and avoid pollution. But the amount of new energy plants, coal-fired energy plants, that China and India are building is greater than all of the total United States inventory.
  So we need to be sensible on our climate policies. We need a balanced approach that doesn’t involve heavy-handed government intervention and radical utopian schemes that will actually make no difference.

      Mickmac – fair comment. You do have to wonder when you find that a climate change conference is cancelled because of heavy snow and bad weather. It happened in Chicago a few years ago if my memory serves me correctly? I do know that in October 2008 the British House of Commons held a debate on global warming. On that day it snowed in London. The first snow in London in October since 1922!

      The predictions of global warming include that snowfall would become a thing of the past. Over the last five years we have had huge dumps of snow in Dargaville, snow falling in central Auckland and snow falling in Gisborne for the first time in living memory.

      Yes but it all balances out, the great socialist state of Victoria got rid 25% of the state power source by closing hazelwood.
      Wholesale prices have gone from mid $30 mw average to over a hundred in the life of the Andrews government.
      The really great thing is, Australia will step in and let the world shove it to them big time and take the blame for all it’s coal exports.
      A brighter note, Japanese are burning high quality Aussie coal, NZ are burning putrid low quality Indonesian coal.

        I also suspect that the Japanese coal-pulverization and combustion technology is pretty sophisticated. High-quality low-sulfur coal is a good start.
        
        Japan is getting cleaner and cleaner as the years go by. The fish are returning to the rivers of Tokyo. (There’s more forest cover in Japan as a percentage of land area than in NZ.)

And invite your leader to reconsider whether the Party’s stance on climate change is right. It will be a brave opposition that presents views contrary to the mandated gospel but for the sanity of the electorate and the avoidance of monumental waste it is time a stand was taken.

  I long for the day that a Politician such as Farage emerges from the pack. At present it would seem we have either Labour Left or Labour Lite. I despair at what is being promoted by Simon and his team right now with regard to the Climate Change scam and the current debate on freedom of speech. The whole gun law change was pushed through without reasoned debate and was done in totally undemocratic manner so Labour Lite ie Simon and his team let us down again. Cindy has let the ridiculous praise go to her head and she now really thinks that what she does or sayes is gospel and that she can do no wrong. I really do fear for the future of NZ as it appears to me that both Parties are drinking out of the same misinformation fountain.

    Approx. 350 people turned up at a public meeting in Te Awamutu on Monday at the RSA regarding the gun laws, Chris Bishop turned up along with Barbara Kuriger to explain National’s position.
    
    It seemed to me that fundamentally it was the same as the governments, they apparently put in some amendments regarding sports shooters and a few other exceptions but they were unsuccessful, so they might as well have opposed it on the grounds of property rights, but they didn’t want to oppose it, as Chris said that they would have made the same decision even if there had been more time than what Labour dictated.
    
    It might have been a hard call not to have a united NZ in face of ChCh, and the emotion that surrounded it, but that is not NZ and that politicians think that law abiding gun owners are going to copycat that is insulting. Why else are they going after people that bought the guns straight after the killings. Of course you would buy one while you still could.
    
    Just like we are all (or should be) taking the opportunity to speak freely while we can still do that too.
    
    AND THEN THEY CAME FOR ME!!!

It will be interesting to hear what the Auditor-General has to say about the PGF.

  Despite the AG being an officer of parliament, his report will be delayed and buried to such an extent that any impact of the report will be severely diluted. Much the same as occured with the Saudi Sheep Deal report.

    If they weren’t advocates and interpreters of whatever laws they wanted I would not think this.
    I do not trust them to be impartial.

Presumably when Ardern comes back with the “Peace in our Time” from Paris that this will be implemented.
I almost think that Ardern’s publicity attempt is falling on its face as from what I can see the only media commented on her is the New Zealand one.
Macron is there but on his own electioneering.

  Both answered, No
  Interviewer – There will be people who say that exposing the ideas like this man, the alleged gunman published, to the light of day, and to criticise, to public scrutiny, is best way of destroying those ideas.
  
  Helen Clark – Well, that’s not really the view our Prime Minster has taken and I support her. She’s never spoken his name, we don’t refer to the contents of his manifesto generally in public discourse – I frankly think the less oxygen these kinds of violent extremist views get, the better for all of us.

  Further to my comments on the Helen Clark Foundation’s Social media paper, I believe this is not so much a dispassionate research or analytical paper designed to offer new solutions, but a PR exercise to support Ardern. The “paper” is aimed at the general public, and nowhere near a policy discussion paper.
  
  My evidence is the use of emotive and misleading language, lack of critical thinking, and lack of understanding of the social media industry.
  First, the authors say Facebook “admitted” and “conceded” some points: what Facebook did was gather information, present the facts, say what they will do, what further options should be investigated, and all in a coherent narrative. In fact, their response was far more extensive than the Foundations.
  
  Secondly, the authors suggest that the mechanisms used by the NZ Media Council or the Broadcasting Standards Authority are a possible solution. After the NZ media collective statement on how they are going to cover Tarrant’s trial, is this really how we want social media companies to act? The problem definition, if there is one, is how can we regulate mainstream social media companies, as opposed to how we can mitigate the risks that a person will be radicalised using the internet? (for example).
  
  Thirdly, the authors make unsubstantiated claims about Facebook deliberately promoting “’borderline’ content, or content which is sensationalist or provocative in nature” as major profit drivers. Evidence please. The authors do not address how certain social media sites that operate on the edge of the internet can be regulated, especially on an international basis. In fact, Facebook says that it was the use of “bad actors” using an unregulated site that caused Facebook so much problems taking down the video.

    Maybe just show that you are a contributor to society.
    
    I have a good friend living o/seas who is on a permanent benefit due to mental health issues.
    
    He is allowed to earn a few dollars which he does but doing a daily paper round. He also volunteers at a couple of organisations that provide counselling/advice for disabled people both physically and mentally disabled.
    
    Although he is a negative contributor to his country financially he does as much as he can to alleviate others. Ask around and see how many beneficiaries in New Zealand spend their days helping others including some that contribute here.

        I have been there a couple of times and in the supported home that he lives in, there are 11 apartments plus one for the rotating nurse staff, all are encouraged to participate in the community to the level of their abilities.
        
        From what I saw, they all did a bit from cleaning up the grounds, gardening both within the complex and in the surrounding area plus shared and coordinated cooking within the complex. Those that were confident went into the city itself and volunteered where they could.
        
        In the entire complex all were engaged with society as a whole.

Do the Greens still want Brenton Tarrant to be able to vote? Early in March the Greens were pushing for crims to vote. Not seen any updates. (Tarrant an Australian can vote in NZ after 12 months residency.)

Ghahraman argued that taking the right to vote away from prisoners excluded them from properly engaging in society, which in itself harmed rehabilitation.

She believed all prisoners should be able to vote – not just those with short sentences.

“We have the Crimes Act and the Sentencing Act that go to their offending. We are already punishing them proportionately to what they have done” Ghahraman said

Brenton Tarrant apparently has no access to news sources. How can Tarrant make an informed voting decision, take part in democracy and ‘engage in society” if he isn’t up to date on current issues? Where are the Greens on this?

Why have the Greens not taken high profile Tarrant under their wing and fought hard for his rights to promote prisoner rights in general?

Has any Green MP visited Tarrant to check up on him? Why isn’t Ghahraman helping Tarrant to “engage in society”.

  Simon, your post is a very good one and highlights the muddled thinking of Ghahraman and those with similar views.
  
  Tarrant is a perfect example of someone who has a particular ideology that led him to commit murder on a mass and extreme scale.
  
  At the least, he should be jailed for life. He will be jailed, because he has no place in civil society. With him being jailed he loses the privleges of being part of society, which includes the right to vote. He will not being going to prison to be rehabilitated and besides given my previous points, I still do not see a reconciliation of being jailed, rehabilitation and as a prisoner he has lost the right to participate in civil society and therefore is not entitled any chance of having a right to vote, ever!

    Permanent resident visa holders, which automatically includes Australians, qualify.
    However they have to be in the country for a certain length of time, which I can’t remember offhand.

    1985—1987: Landmine campaign
    From 1985 to 1987, there also was a campaign to place anti-tank mines on rural roads in what was then the Northern Transvaal. This tactic was abandoned due to the high rate of civilian casualties—especially amongst black labourers.       You display the typical comprehension problem seen in the media – you want to take Trump literally but not seriously, instead of seriously but not literally. Raking is simply one component of the forest management regime required, do you expect him to give a discourse on all the techniques involved ?
      
      But he’s quite correct as these reports show, the “naturalist” fallacy of leaving the forests to manage themselves has been shown to lead to “natural” fires on a devastating scale. If you are going to have communities living within the forested areas, in order to manage the fire risk a management regime of those forests is necessary. Those who advocated for and achieved a nil management regime are directly responsible for the death toll, but don’t expect those people to actually have to atone for that let alone actually suffer any consequences.

  It’s not a totally stupid idea, though it depends on the details. If the idea is that this payment should replace all existing benefits, then some of the total cost is offset. Also there are considerable savings in administrative costs, as there’s no longer any need to work out who’s eligible for what. There’s also the moral advantage that there is no longer any incentive to cheat the system, eg by pretending you’re disabled when you’re not; and incentives to work are strengthened, because when you switch from unemployment to work you don’t lose the ubi – thus, the financial difference between being in work and not is actually greater than under a system where you are paid only if you are not.
  
  It would be simple enough to provide for a reduced rate, or even no rate, for prisoners if paying prisoners was considered a problem, although again you would need to compare the cost with what a released prisoner usually costs the state.
  
  It may be that even once all this is taken into account, the cost is still too great. But I can’t see that the answer is so self-evident that the question should not even be asked.

    The problem with UBI is you will eventually run out of people to pay.
    
    You could achieve similar administrative results by introducing a basic tax rebate.
    
    1. Make Benefits tax free.
    2. Reduce benefits to net (after tax benefit level)
    3. Introduce basic rebate so that beneficiaries don’t get taxed from $1 once they restart work.
    
    In addition you can achieve the same result as working for families by using a child rebate.
    
    The admin savings would be enormous.

    It only takes away the motivation of work compared to a state where there is no unemployment benefit. Compared to a state where there is unemployment benefit, like this one, a UBI actually increases the incentive to work. Consider:
    
    You and your friend are both unemployed, collecting (say) $100 unemployment benefit. Now you get a job paying (say) $200. You get $200 but you lose the $100 unemployment benefit, because you’re not unemployed, but your friend still gets the $100 because he’s still unemployed. Getting the job has made you only $100 better off than he is.
    
    Under a UBI, you still get the $100 as well as your wage. So you are $200 better off than your friend.
    
    The exact numbers don’t matter. The reward for work is greater, and the incentives to cheat are less, under a UBI than under a system where benefits are paid only to people who don’t work.

  It’s little different to our present benefit system with a wider clawback.
  
  It will get more significant if there are continuing job losses to automation. It’s not possible to expect lower paid less able workers to be suitably retrained for productive employment–a displaced accountant maybe, but not a shelf filler.
  
  Our benefit system copes well at present with job losses but it may place too much pressure on future workers. The UBI recognises the lack of opportunities. That will require a tax adjustment too: the gain from automation will need to be seen to be taxed as it imposes higher costs on the state. We don’t let people starve.
  
  The increased profitability needs to be fairly shared with the dispossessed via taxes so they are not a burden thrown onto other taxpayers. This may look like the lower classes are taking advantage but if their opportunities for gainful work are denied can we complain if they are found on a couch?

    They seem to be relatively neutral but do call out bullshit when they see it and surprisingly that does seem to emanate more from the left than the right but they do seem to jump on it regardless of political orientation.

We have obtained information showing that she spent four nights at a luxury hotel in Copenhagen costing the ratepayer nearly $2,000, and all ratepayers were left with was the bill and emissions.

Stop your council from joining the madness
If Nelson City Council approves the Mayor’s hypocritical “declaration of climate emergency”, it’s a fair bet that other councils will follow fast.

These declarations may begin as harmless virtue signaling, but in the UK are being used to justify introducing new costs on ratepayers (despite the insignificant contribution to global emissions from councils).

Maybe an IOA to find out if she purchased Carbon Indulgences to pollute the skies?

The list is endless.

And then there is the argument of whether it is right to use such an event to push any narrative at all.

It’s hard to understand why Folau says he cares about gay people, and knows their suffering, yet uses his powerful social media platform to compare gay people to thieves and adulterers.

Well, there you are Erik – “homosexuals” were second on the Folau “list” that media cherry-picked from – they didn’t bother to mention the “idolators”, who came in last at 8th on the list.

But then there is more –
The Galatians 5:19-21 KJV text, which Israel (Folau) quotes, also mentions “uncleanness, idolatry, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, envyings, drunkenness, revelings and such like”, all of which I have seen headlined at various times as being associated or promoted with rugby or football.
And as I do not follow the sport in any way, I may be ignorant about “adultery, fornication, lasciviousness, witchcraft, seditions, heresies and murders” in relation to the game.

But I would point out this quoted text does contradict the HELL AWAITS YOU prognosis, and warns instead “that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”, which would seem to be a spiritual detachment quite different to the HELL clickbait slogan.

But then that seems to be the sort of trouble one can get into taking narrow Biblical quotes as being gospel.

Woman shot and killed by police after grabbing officer’s taser in Texas.
The incident took place on Monday night (local time) at an apartment complex in Baytown, Texas. Police say the officer recognised the 45-year-old woman, who had warrants for arrest, when he was patrolling the area. In the video, which has gone viral online, the woman can be heard telling the officer she was pregnant.

One view – “If an officer can’t take a 45 year old pregnant woman into custody without escalating it to killing they are either utterly incompetent or out looking to kill someone”

Another – Lt Steve Dorris, of Baytown Police, said it was unfortunate the incident was distributed on social media. “She actually [tased] the officer, which forced the officer to draw his duty weapon and fire multiple rounds at the suspect.

Would Ardern’s Christchurch Call Pledge have detected this violent video?

The Prime Minister isn’t ruling out changing laws that could go as far as blocking Facebook if it’s used to share extremist or violent content like the alleged Christchurch gunman’s video of the March 15 terror attack
– so would she block Newshub which is among others in featuring this video at the moment?

Would I be breaking some yet to be defined law by commenting about it?

A serial number was used as evidence to convict a person in a homicide. Therefore Nash thinks a serial number register will reduce homicides.

A few points to consider Nashy:
1) Ummmm, it didn’t reduce the homicide rate in this case did it? The homicide still happened!
2) Does a berson hopped up enough to go murder someone really think “ooh no, they might have the serial number”!
3) Files remove serial numbers.
4) For every gun killing there are 4 or 5 knife killings. Serial numbers on knives too?

Sorry Nashy, this is just more “do something, anything” thinking not based on reality.

Hospital is doing renovations. They have today sent out letters to all gp’s. For the next 22 weeks until the renovations are finished they will be taking no new patients that are not already on the waiting list. Damn. Never heard of that before, usually they work around the patients don’t they? Oh well maybe that is how labour is going to save some money with this dhb.
