My take on the ‘Whale Oil’ book – it’s about far more than just the blog and Cameron Slater.

It is primarily about a campaign of harassment against Matt Blomfield and his family over many years. At it’s worst it involve an armed attack on them in their home. But it also involved many attacks online, and via text, with threats.

It is also about the concerning lack of action by police.

It also has wider interest in the prevalence of bullying online – this is one of the worst cases imaginable, but it is a big and topical issue.

    I suggest you read the book David. Then you might have some understanding of what it is about, how bad the bullying and harassment has been for Blomfield and his family, and it’s wider importance, instead of trying the tired and petty little attack-the-messenger thing here.

        I haven’t been paid anything by anyone on anything related to the book. I haven’t been paid anything on any of this (I was accused of that in court once by Nottingham).
        
        More pertinent questions:
        Was Slater paid for the online hit job? If so by whom?
        Was the person convicted of assaulting Blomfield paid anything? If so by whom?
        
        Are you trying to play petty diversions for Whale Oil on a voluntary basis?

        For your information, I have never actually met Mr Slater…although he still owes me for several columns I wrote for “Truth” when he was its last editor.

        PG: So, someone allegedly invaded this Bloomfield fellow’s house and threatened him and his family with a shotgun. There are a number of very serious charges arising from such a scenario.
        
        Was anyone charged over these alleged offences? If so, what was the outcome, or are they still going through the justice system? Or did the events described perhaps never happen?

        It is detailed extensively in the book. It was also reported at the time.
        
        Death threats before attack
        
        A businessman who suffered facial injuries during a vicious fight in his home with a masked gunman had received anonymous death threats prior to the incident.
        
        Matthew Blomfield, 38, suffered facial injuries after being hit with a rifle and is understood to have narrowly avoided being shot when the gun went off during the terrifying ordeal last Saturday night.
        
        The gunman, wearing a Spiderman mask, tried to gain access to Blomfield’s home, where his wife and two small children were, it is understood.

        NZH on the book:
        
        According to the book, Blomfield received odd and frightening text messages forecasting physical harm ahead of a home invasion by gang associate Ned Paraha, who was sent to prison for the armed assault.
        
        The book speculated as to the blogger’s potential connection to gang members and included material hacked from Slater’s computer in which Slater is twice quoted as offering to provide Blomfield’s location for people who allegedly wanted to attack him.
        
        The book further recorded testimony from an associate of Slater’s in which a gang member was asked how much it would cost to “finish Matt off”. The sum quoted, according to the book, was $5000.

        PG: Thank you, I was unaware of all this…and for the record I wasn’t playing dumb; I had never heard of this Matt Blomfield before this morning (my participation in social media is strictly limited to this blog). I stopped reading the Herald or its woeful website long ago.
        
        I see nothing in what you have posted though to a proven link to Slater in all of this…Was he questioned by the police? Was he ever charged in relation to the attack or the threats?
        
        I repeat:I have never met Cameron Slater, although we have communicated by e-mail and spoken on the phone a few times.

        Have you ever stopped to consider how hypocritical you are given the repeated attention you pay to people on twitter.
        
        I suggest you read the book so you are actually informed about how serious this is rather than playing the poor Cam card.
        
        I’ll quote one relatively minor part of the book:
        
        Early March 2017 and Matt’s now ten year old daughter taps on the Snapchat icon on her phone. Someone called Cam Slater from whaleoilnz is asking to follow her.
        
        Fortunalely she recognised the name and didn’t accept the request.
        
        Keep trying to deter criticism of Slater if you like. I’ll keep doing what I think is justified exposure of someone involved in prolonged and nasty harassment.

        Am I defending Slater? No. He made his bed, and now has to lie in it.
        
        I can understand that you have very good reasons to strongly dislike Slater, and his mates, given that you got caught up in the endless litigation. But by posting about him endlessly, all you are doing is giving him oxygen.
        
        I’ve chosen to move on, after a significant and life-changing mental health episode. I’ve also chosen to be transparent on blogs and social media, and be accountable for every word I write. Credit to you for having been a forerunner in the latter, but now perhaps you should try the former; looking forward instead of over your shoulder is liberating.

        Try considering how important this book is to Blomfield and his family. They have been taken through hell for most of a decade, and this is their chance to say how it has impacted on their lives.
        
        If you read the book you will get some understanding.

  You just need to read the history of Blomfeld and his behaviour from the time of Hell Pizza days.. There is case to suggest that it is that behaviour and carry on which brought on these thing on to himself and his family.

      I am happen to respond to that. Nothing justifies invading someone’s house and threatening them with a shotgun…and the offence is ten times worse if children were terrorised. Any person involved in such behaviour should be sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment.

  I don’t always agree with Du Fresne but on this occassion I agree with him concerning the attacks on politicians which are becoming more frequent and pose a genuine security threat.

  Paginus – quite right. On the subject of immigration I read recently that immigration levels are just as high under labour as they were under national. Labour of course also pledges to bring in more refugees, so we get the double whammy of continuing high immigration and more of the least skilled and qualified Third World immigrants.
  
  The problem is that both parties are full of globalists. National’s donors want the cheap labour and the Labour Party wants the new voters.
  
  I would be interested to know is it true that over the last 10 years we have brought in 700,000 immigrants? We really are seeing a dramatic population shift. The local Kiwi population is being replaced by foreigners.
  
  There is room on the right for a Conservative party of traditional values that stands up for New Zealanders. While New Zealanders cannot find housing we continue to import every month thousands and thousands of new people. The situation cannot go on.

    Lots of new immigrants and student visas with work permitted, but employers cannot fill jobs. Especially tech jobs.
    
    We have a $20billion shadow economy, it is estimated, and it’s not all meth dealers.
    
    IRD annual reports mention that for each dollar spent on compliance they bring in several dollars in tax. Even though the new system there should throw up even more red flags to investigate, seems like a no brainer to seriously increase the compliance budget.

      GDP per capita is virtually stagnant and will soon begin to fall. Hospitals, prisons, the school system, roads, city facilities are under heavy demand pressure.
      
      Soaring population stimulates GDP growth – as opposed to static and soon to be falling GDP per capita. This latter measures our citizens’ wealth compared with those of other countries.
      
      GDP growth from immigration creates more jobs. The people who fill them put pressure on infrastructure and expand demand for goods and services. This creates more jobs. This requires still more people and more immigration. It also pushes GDP per capita lower, because population growth is outracing economic growth.
      
      We are in immigration vicious circle, an economic feedback loop that will sink our living standard in comparison with the rest of the developed world.
      
      NZ is like a Titanic lifeboat taking in so many survivors that the boat is beginning to sink but the lower it goes in the water the easier it is to get in.

Two things that need to change in the education system:

1. Performance pay, so teachers who are doing a great job can be paid a lot more without blowing the budget.

2. Group students by ability not age. With all students in the class at the same level you can achieve much more. Add in even a small number (whether special needs or not) who can’t do the work the rest of the class is doing and the teacher workload goes up dramatically.

  Ask McCos about the behaviour of kids in Thailand and I have even seen kids in Oz that have more respect for themselves and their teachers than here.

In Myanmar seven soldiers were convicted of murdering 10 unarmed Rohingya men in cold blood in September 2018.
They were released last November after about a year.
Two local Reuters reporters who exposed the atrocity were also sent to prison on spurious charges. They were recently released after serving longer prison sentences than the actual murderers.

  This conflict has gone on for many years.
  Burma is predomently buddhist around 88%, Christian 6%, and Islam just over 4%.
  Christianity has grown 2% the others are stagnant in numbers.
  Normally I have found Buddhism to be a very peaceful religion, I guess because the way they worship and their religious beliefs are very different.
  How can 4% of the population be so hated?
  Easy really, just turn all around you into a shithole where no one can live with ones neighbours.
  A more interesting article in this link is, Buddhists shutting down Ramadan celebrations in Rangoon.
  If you push peaceful people far enough, there will be blowback, and this is what is happening.
  I have visited Burma the first time in the 1976 and last time a few years back. Wonderful people, very poor but extremely friendly. Never went to the west this last time, as I thought it a little out of my comfort zone safety wise. I strayed a little closer in the East than I should have and very close to the other conflict that has gone on for eternity with the hilltribes.
  An interesting visit to a supermarket in Rangoon, a security guard at the end of each aisle, reason shoplifting no, shop had been bombed.
  2013 there were numerous bombings carried out by muslims up and down the country.
  The other really interesting aspect to this is Bangladesh don’t want a single one of these people in their country, a Muslim country shunning their own.
  If you push pacifists hard enough, you will get blow back.

    Funnily enough, this is similar to many other religions – Islam (religion of peace) and Christianity (founded by the ‘prince of peace’).

      I made some personal observations of Burma, there is and will be ongoing conflict, both sides have blood on their hands, The Rohingya are fast running out of options, Bangladesh treat them like Lepers, Burma really has had enough of their antics.
      When you represent just 4% unless you are Winston Peters, you really have no moral or legal authority to change the whole country to comply with your wishes.
      Why is it that not one Islamic country puts its hand up to give these people a home, won’t happen. Maybe New Zealand will.
      Burma has shown patience in this matter, maybe the Chinese solution would be a better solution, no one ever seems to mention this.

  A very interesting character. He was of great ability and talent, but favored socialism and Big Government.
  Perhaps because he was born in a Poland that did not exist as a country at that time, he always felt himself an outsider, with no true sense of national identity. (He did have a pan-national identity, that you can find out for yourself.)
  Perhaps individuals who are highly intelligence and who have a lack of a sense of national identity are more inclined to want a “world government” for the rest of us. After all they probably truly believe that “they know what is best for us.” (And there in lies the danger.)

Made the time to watch Question Time again yesterday. As my partner is such a ‘political junkie’, its good to be able to have an intelligent conversation when he gets home. I still think the PM should wear her hair up. She looks sooo last century. (Although having spoken to a couple of girls that knew her from school, apparently she has always been very self-conscious about her big ears). I must say that Nikki and Paula are both looking really svelte and elegant. Someone i hadn’t noticed before, was Labor list MP, Ginny Andersen. Shes actually very very cure and looks a lot like my bestie Fleur. One of the hallmarks of good governance is setting policies to ensure a minimum of industrial disruption and strikes.

An economy that isnt working isnt working.

Over the none years of a National Government we saw very little industrial disruption.

Contrast that with the last 18 months.

Whilst the citizens may have some sympathy for those who strike eventually that wears off with the inconvenience it causes ( think Teachers Parents) and the citizens punish the Government they see as not able to set the right policies.

The question is will this be a factor in Election 2020.

    Teachers aren’t being paid enough to attract enough candidates to the profession to replace those leave, thereby increasing the workload for those remaining.
    
    However on the money side consider:
    
    We are entrusting our most valuable possessions (our children) to degree qualified professionals.
    
    Then we want to pay them (relative to other degree qualified professionals with far less responsibility) a pittance.
    
    Take the billion dollars being wasted on free tertiary education and give it to the teachers.

The truth about the Ministry of Education’s pay offer: Hipocritkins, Cinderella, Trace Martini et al are deliberately fudging the facts and compressing timelines when they say most teachers will be $10K better off.

To be fair, Hipocritkins recently (13 May) clarified that the pay offer would result in an extra $10K a year for primary school teachers only, with secondary school teachers earning slightly less. I don’t know a single primary teacher who will be in this boat, and I do know a few primary teachers.

The reality is that a high school teacher currently in their first year of teaching will be receiving an additional $4748 in three years time. A secondary teacher at the top of the scale will be $8230 better off in three years time. So there is a lot of “creative accounting” at play already. One of my main issues with the offer is that the ministry steadfastly refuses to increase the value of management units, which recognise the huge amount of extra work we do in positions of responsibility such as Teacher in Charge of subjects / Head of Department, Dean / Year Level Coordinator / Progress Leader, middle and upper management, etc. These MUs have been frozen for around a decade if not more – we’ve effectively taken a significant pay-cut and yet this is still not being addressed at all.

The reality is that our contract expired in October last year and the government has no intention to backpay any settlement back to the date of the contract’s expiration, even though every pay increase MPs ever receive is backdated.

In my case, if we accepted this current offer I would be about $30 a week better off after tax. Putting that into context, last year when my house was sold and a new property investor landlord took it over, my rent was immediately increased by $55 a week. (Luckily I was successfully able to negotiate this down a tad.)

Here’s why we won’t accept this offer: the Reserve Bank of NZ’s Monetary Policy Statement (May 2019) predicted that inflation over the next 4 years will run at around 7.5%. In real terms this means that the government is actually offering most of us a 1.7% increase spread out over three years (factoring in the likelihood that we’re not going to settle any time soon this will actually take us four years beyond the expiration of our contract).

Does 1.7% spread out over 4 years sound at all like “a lot of money”, like the “really good offer” Hipocritkins (on his $288,900 pa salary plus perks) is saying teachers are being offered? When Hipocritkins said “Teachers have got high expectations of this Government and that’s fine, I’m happy to live up to those expectations as long as they’re reasonable”, did he really believe that 1.7% OVER FOUR YEARS was living up to expectations?

By buying into the tripe that the government peddles, you support lies, hypocrisy, and blatant dishonesty. You allow them to pull the wool over your eyes and dazzle you with stardust. Stardust won’t cover my rent. Stardust won’t convert a horrendously over-worked and underpaid profession into an attractive prospective career for anyone at all. Stardust won’t resolve the looming teacher crisis and ensure that your children or grandchildren will have sufficient, experienced, passionate, healthy, secure teachers in the classroom. Do you really want someone in the classroom who can’t operate to the best of their ability because they’re having to moonlight as an Uber driver to supplement their income in order to afford rent or save for a deposit?

The Labour Party manifesto 2017 made this statement regarding education: “we face the very real prospect of a
critical teacher shortage unless urgent action is taken to avoid it.” Does 1.7% over four years qualify as “urgent action”?

Has the government actually published what the Wellbeing metrics being used in the budget are (and the relative weighting being given to each)? Or is this information being released on budget day?

I’ll admit to being skeptical about the concept, mainly due to the issue of how to weigh different measures of wellbeing. Not everybody values the same things in life. For example, if we had a list of wellbeing metrics including;

1) Income
2) (Self-reported) job satifcation
3) Number of pets owned
4) Average number of sexual encounters per month
5) Number of friends
6) Number of out-of-town holidays taken
7) Valuation of primary residence
8) (Self-reported) Quality of relationship with family

… different people are going to put completely different importance to each of these. A teenage boy would probably rate 4 as much more important than 3, while a retired widow likely the other way around. A workaholic Wall-Street type might value 1 and 7, and not care about 5 and 8 at all.

There is also the difficulty of how to comparing metrics measured in different units. If the job-satisfaction question is answered on an Extremely Satisfied/Somewhat Satisfied/Neutral/Unsatisfied scale, how do we determine how many cats those answers are equivalent to?

I have no problem with the notion that GDP shouldn’t be the be-all-and-end-all of the budget (and I don’t believe it ever has been), and agree the welfare of Kiwis should be a major factor when allocating spending. I’m just unconvinced that attempting to quantify something as nebulous as “wellbeing” can be done in a way that produces meaningful or useful information.

My guess is that it was a leak which they are trying to cover up with an alledged hack story

It just doesn’t add up that someone would be able to hack into treasury with all of the security they would have. It is probably true that there were numerous attempts at it but that could be happening all the time

The *commercial building sector* continues to be of real concern.
Imagine a large established business having decided not to renew their existing lease, after having signed up for new premises in the *Commercial Bay Precinct*…..on the basis it was to be ready to occupy earlier this year. And now being told it is likely to be yet another year away.

Market uncertainty, and the need to renegotiate short term leases on existing premises, must result in additional huge cost burdens and anxiety for the future.

On the Radio NZ web site, an article takes a look at whether companies paying thousands to get a “rainbow tick” are actually safe for LGBTQI people. (“LGBTQI” are the initials of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and intersex.)

The kicker is that the writer of the article is identified by only one name – Murphy. Obviously neutral. Is that going to be the trend in bylines?

This shows a lack of both integrity and maturity of National’s leader that he would use spending on defence for personal political advantage.

If he really believed that higher pay for teachers was more important than defence capability, his party would have known of this long ago – and the caucus that saw fit to choose him as leader would have increased the education budget to increase teachers pay last pay round.

In the U.S, some 15 states have come to an understanding that they will not follow the rules of the Electoral College during an election. Charlie Kirk, founder and executive director of Turning Point USA points out that if more states do this and it turns into a popular vote, then Republicans will never win an election again.

The National Popular Vote is a campaign to evade the electoral college via an interstate compact wherein partner states — via their own statewide legislation — agree to cast their electoral votes based on the national popular vote, regardless of how their own state’s citizens voted.

“Few people actually realize that Democrats and the left have done this in 15 states, already,” began Kirk. “This is called the National Popular Vote Compact — an interstate compact — where essentially states have agreed to send their electoral votes to the winner of the popular.”

“It’s kind of a way to constitutionally reverse-engineer the brilliance of the electoral college,” added Kirk, elaborating on his Breitbart News column entitled, “The Electoral College Stands Between the Constitution and the Mob.”

Kirk warned, “If Democrats and the left pull this off, forget about it. We’ll have a less than five percent chance of ever winning another election again. This is exactly what the Founding Fathers tried to prevent, which is the tyranny of the mob of the inner cities.”

The Founders established the Electoral College for just this reason – so that everyone had a voice.

Abolition of the electoral college, de facto or otherwise, would lead to urban domination of presidential elections, noted Marlow.

“We would just become L.A., New York, D.C., a couple for big cities in Texas might get some attention, and then the middle of the country would get completely ignored if we went away from the electoral college instead of making it a state-by-state deal,” Marlow said.

  It was the Senate that was formed to prevent (a temporary) popular majority rule (assisted by its overlapping 6 year terms) – smaller states not being overwhelmed by the larger ones (as all have 2 Senators each).
  
  The real problem is in the House as parties in control of state governments gerrymander boundaries for advantage at the national level.
  
  The electoral college not so much.
  
  The states have their population level electoral college votes. That states that vote Democrat would choose a nationwide popular vote that gives the same result changes nothing. It’s empty posturing. It’s grievance signalling that the GOP President does not have a popular vote majority. And that is all it is.

So we are now told there is no damage to the Wellington City Central Library , so no insurance claim.
It would seem it is just caught by changes to earthquake building code rating changes. Why would anyone think of strengthening or rebuilding the library when in 5 years time the rating will probably change again, on a whim.

This is just like what Maggy W pointed out the other day with the cycle way to Petone . On the one hand they are happy to spend $75+ mill on a cycle way on the shoreline but in the next breath they lecture us about rising sea levels.

  The project to build a cycle way from Petone to Wellington includes work to improve the seawall.
  
  What it lacks is the efficiency of a third south bound lane which would add little to the cost.

Winston Peters announced today that he is furious with the National Party. Not angry. Furious. “In all my time in Parliament, and I’ve had a few gigs sonny girl, I can’t recall a more despicable attempt to tell the truth regarding a governmental budget. All this talk of “coalition of losers”, “old naughty”, “amateur hour” and being a “drunken half awake old soak” is just the kind of unnecessary petty name calling that I’ve had to endure over the years. Now, the despicable National party is bandying around actual Treasury numbers that ultimately Grant left open and clear on the internet. Disgraceful”.

When questioned over just how furious he is, Mr Peters replied. “Now look here, on a scale of 1 to Provincial Growth Fund, its a full on well bred, good looking nag. And I’ve done more budgies than Brian Tamaki’s seen hot sinners, so that’s an indication of the scurrilous, despicable sort of thing the National Party is engaging in here”.

When asked what PM Ardern thought about him making this kind of statement, Mr Peters asked “who?”

Hmm I wonder how Hipkins is feeling tonight? And why has stuff not reported a jot on Nikki Kaye’s statements about the negotiations? Tanks, Not Teachers, I hope the labour Loving Teachers think good and hard about who they should be voting for next time round. In the 22 or so years I have been teaching in New Zealand, there has been less industrial action under Nat governments and better negotiations. The last time there was massive industrial action was when Mallard was ruining the show….

Couldn’t really fathom Audrey Young’s and Claire Trevett’s articles in the NZH today.
Young says Bridges had to do two things surrounding his budget information re saying how he got the information and why he didn’t go the Police with it. Trevett says the whole announcement was a smokescreen for the National Party not to have to talk about Alfred Ngaro and the Party review… Really!?
I don’t think Bridges had to do anything re the budget information he had – especially now as it seems the information never came from a systematic, illegal hack (the Cindy & Grant Show in the House at QT proved that! – even Mallard didn’t jump in (much)).
