Last night Mrs kk experienced a heart issue which required a rapid trip into Wellington public hospital. Can I first of all thank the ED duty staff for their amazing care. Mrs kk was triaged and had two nurses and a doctors on her case within minutes of us arriving, and their professionalism was apparent throughout the 4 hours we there. She’s home now and would have gone to work today had Mr kk not put his foot down!

I sat there last night reflecting on the events of the day, including the so-called ‘Wellbeing’ budget. I concluded that wellbeing isn’t delivered by commentators like us hammering away at KB and other forums. It isn’t delivered which budgets which spray public money around, hoping that some of it sticks. It has nothing to do with platitudinous politicians angling for personal brand enhancement. Wellbeing is already delivered by 100s of thousands of kiwi’s, day-in and day-out, with little fanfare, and with little expectation. It’s simply part of who they are, and New Zealand, for all it’s faults, is a great place because of these people.

  Sorry to hear about Mrs kk’s heart issue, but glad to hear she was looked after so well in ED. And well done for putting your foot down about her going back to work.
  
  My family and I have always had prompt and good care at both Wellington and Hutt Hospitals. Let’s hope CoL incompetence doesn’t wreck things.

    Thanks mandk. Not something either of us is accustomed to – we’re both outliers for our age in terms of fitness and health. I was amazed at what the ED staff had to contend with – trashed/drugged/abusive people. Quite an eye opener.

  Not good to hear about Mrs kk’s heart issue, but it’s great that she got such good and immediate care. After 18 months of listening to the likes of David Clark pontificating about “nine years of neglect”, i was half-expecting you to talk about the third world conditions, mould on the walls and sewage running down the hallways.
  
  As an aside, we had our Rotary District Conference a couple of weeks ago, and heard about the new Wellington Children’s Hospital, which is going to be a world-class facility. Rotary clubs throughout our lower North Island district will get behind this project, and help make sure that the new hospital is equipped and furnished to a high standard. Should a future grandchild need hospitalisation in Wellington, it will be reassuring to know they will get fantastic care.

  I’ve had heart issues all year. Many trips to the hospital. Test everything, doctors confused. Last time it happened I got so annoyed I went onto YouTube and started searching. Found one of my medications cause rapid heart beat, found it can also cause ectopic beats. Then came across a British cardiologist videos. Since the cardiologist at our hospital was useless I wrote him. His reply, most doctors are too entrenched with medicine to actually look at what is causing the problems and heal it, told me to take magnesium with Taurine. That a lot of his patients with symptoms like me were caused by the meds they are on causing magnesium deficiency. 3 days after starting it the rapid heart beats stopped the ectopic beats went from one every 5 beats to a couple a day to I don’t notice if I have any any more. Stopped taking my beta blocker a week ago. Really interesting guy, might be worth you looking at his videos

    I ended up under care when I was diagnosed with Non Hodgins Lymphoma Stage 4 at Waikato
    Couldn’t ask for better care or treatment.
    The current health minister is only qualified to stand at grave sides giving eulogises.

    My mum is a bit like this. Can’t take a lot of medicines. Years ago she went into hospital for an operation and when she came out of it, her heartbeat was very erratic. The Dr prescribed Potassium tablets of quite a high dosage (600mg) which fixed her. Now, whenever she feels she has a heart thing she takes the potassium and it seems to work. If ever she goes into hospital she insists on having it now.

      Potassium should only be used under real supervision–it can stop the heart. I had a med which was “potassium sparing” the effect was to one morning reduce my heart rate to 22bpm. That rate is too low to function and adrenaline had to be administered directly into the shin bone. Thanks to the paramedics who had the knowhow and the technology.

      no time for that. And no ability for that. Head scan next week. That’s got me a bit scared. physio. Doctors appointments. Heart problem was a result of medication side effects, that’s the problem today, side effect cause secondary issues to the main problems.

  Hope your wife is ok now.
  
  For serious and immediate life threatening issues, our health system works pretty well.
  
  Chronic health issues are not so well looked after, as you can end up on long waiting lists.
  
  Our system is way better than in the US though, in that we do take care of those with no money. Maybe a bit more user pay could apply here, as I double up on my healthcare with an insurance policy but i don’t get a tax break for that.

  I agree totally about your comment that ‘Wellbeing is already delivered by 100s of thousands of kiwi’s, day-in and day-out, with little fanfare, and with little expectation. It’s simply part of who they are, and New Zealand, for all it’s faults, is a great place because of these people’.
  
  As with Mrs KK, I also had unexpected heart problems; ultimately resulting in a quadruple bypass discovered during a low-level and very ‘routine’ check. All staff I met during the 18 days I inhabitted the local hospital (no names) were brilliant, very caring, very professional and very concerned about my well-being. Mrs Komata and myself were kept fully infomed and involved with what was going-on, in a situation that was both hightly unusual and somewhat complicated (the details don’t matter). The ‘after-discharge’ support has also been very impressive and again, highly supportive. We were very appreciative.

  Months of investigation culminated in Labour Party president Mike Williams flying to Melbourne to trawl through 11,000 pages of court records, apparently in an effort to link Mr Key to the notorious H-fee scheme, which landed entrepreneur Allan Hawkins in jail in 1992.
  
  Mr Key said yesterday it was a “desperate attempt by the Labour Party to smear me 10 days out from the election”.
  
  National is now asking how much Labour leader Helen Clark knew about Mr Williams’ efforts, saying the Prime Minister’s attempts to distance herself were not credible.

    The issue is a technical one. A web page is accessed via a link. The addition of new content to a site however might be made by putting a new page on the site while providing no link to it. The new page can nonetheless be accessed if you know or can hack the name (URL) of the page. I assume treasury provided no links to the page, but that the page was hacked, hence the 2000 attempts. Something that seems to be missed however is that if treasury behaved this way this year then presumably they did so when the Nats were in office. In which case did National simply come across the link or did they know there was a security issue which they thought better to exploit than fix?

        National used Treasury’s own search function (Embedded into the page).
        
        You might assume that treasury was using block tags, the evidence suggests otherwise.

      You are either not familiar with web and hyper text linking using HTML and then linking the pages so they can be searched by the websites own search engine or you are a Labour troll still trying to throw squirrels.

  Only shiftiness is from labour supporters going around trying to cover up labour and the actions of treasury by blaming national. Don’t really think you have any sort of feeling for the public because every conversation I have heard has been against labour and treasury and for national. The only times I have heard anything against bridges is from the few who don’t understand what happened and think national used a hacker.

  I would say that there is a marked difference between doing research on a treasury website and finding this information than say, sending your party president on a dirt digging mission to Australia for the sole purpose of finding dirt on John Key, then falsely claiming that you have it.
  
  Anyone on the Treasury Website for Honest Reasons would have found this information as it was there for all to see. The fact that you see it as shifty probably says more about you than Bridges.

  I would suggest a better question would be something like

        Absolutely, but one of the specific takeaways from yesterday is that benefits will be linked to average earnings rather than the CPI
        
        ie I will have to pay more tax, therefore I will have to make more to take home the same as I do now so that the nephs can not go to work and play Playstation.
        
        So they get an index-linked annual pay rise while doing nothing more than they do now (still nothing). I on the other don’t get that and will have to do more to take home what I do now – which in real terms means falling behind where I am now because inflation.

        With a bit of luck they’ll also be too bloated and lethargic to reproduce, although lacing the booze with bromide would have the desired result too.

    Do you think people vote with a view of what is in the best interests of NZ in the long-term view or what is in it for me in the short medium term.
    If you really believe that people act with altruism I would suggest you are naive.
    A traditional budget sets a financial narrative for how OUR taxes are spent and therefore tax was usually a strong focus. With the coalition government failing on their Capital Tax initiative, there has been no focus on tax at all.
    Therefore it is a discussion on how MORE money is spent. It isn’t a discussion on how money will be spent and measured for effectiveness. It is just on how this government will spend more and more with no focus on how we will grow our economy to ensure the spending has a funding source.
    I digress. No, I am not satisfied with how money has been allocated in this budget as it places no focus on wealth creation and focuses on spending a lot, fast with no measure of effectiveness.

    While I understand your sentiment, I don’t really agree. As the TAX Payer, I want to know what is being done with my money, for the TAX Payer, i.e. ME and others like me.
    While I don’t begrudge honest social benefits the support they need, I want to see some of my money being used for things I require such as improved roads, tax cut.

Have you noticed how many journalists make the claim that Bridges should have been ‘responsible’ and informed the authorities about the lax security around the budget. Don’t they realise that the budget is a highly politicised document and National was doing its job?
It also shows how biased they are as they are criticising National for not being responsible . And hypocritical because what decent reporter doesn’t exploit a leak.

    Perhaps TS just a lot of sour grapes from so called journalists who all missed a scoop that was at their fingertips without having to get out of their seat. Post the budget delivery the thunder stolen so deftly by Simon Bridges is the highlight followed by his contribution to the post budget debate. It kept old WP awake but he quickly nodded off when the PM started on about baby shoes. Lol

When this popped up on my Twitter-feed last nite i thought to myself, perhaps this has been the plan all along – keep Julian Assange on the equivalent of ‘Death Row’ until he karks it anyway. I know whenever Ive tried to discuss this with my partner he always sez, “Why should we give a f~~k? Its not like hes family or anything”.
He comes across as sooo uncaring sometimes 🙁

Until the NZ voter wake up to the fact that Winston Peter’s is the scourge of our politics with lies and deceit his main contribution the sooner we will move on and create a fair and better country for all to live in. At the moment Mr 7% gets 70% of the pot in budgets to save a party that he leads with bribes and what some call corrupt policy for some of his donors.

    Mahklouf succeeds Philip Lane, who is off to be chief economist at the European Central Bank and will sit on the governing council of the bank.
    
    Reuters reported this of Mahklouf’s appointment, beginning with a quote from Ireland’s Finance Minister, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe:
    
    “Gabriel [Makhlouf] has demonstrated his broad and detailed knowledge, of economics, financial markets, monetary policy, and fiscal policy, and has the experience of leading a large and complex public service organization of 10,000 people.”
    
    The son of United Nations diplomats, Makhlouf was born in Cairo of British and Greek parentage and has a degree in economics from Britain’s University of Exeter.
    
    He became head of the New Zealand Treasury in 2011, where he has also been the government’s chief economic and financial adviser. In New Zealand, he played a leading role in the government’s public and private sector diversity and inclusion drive and was recently named an observer on the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s newly-formed Monetary Policy Committee.
    
    Makh, aged 58, has been big on diversity, with a Maorification drive near the end of his reign at Treasury.
    
    In getting the Irish job, he was chosen ahead of an Irish woman on the short list. One for the old white men, eh?

  I have nothing but contempt with the highhanded and disdainful way this government “manages” information.
  Having a PM with a degree in spin, they cynically manipulate bad news and shamelessly select facts to promote their agendas.
  I believe some of the damage this lot are doing to NZ will be difficult to reverse and worry about our future generations.
  This budget sends a clear message that it is OK to accept welfare as a way of life and have removed any punitive measures (and therefore have changed the social contract that states that welfare is a helping hand, rather than a lifestyle choice) which will entrench current AND FUTURE generations into non-productive lives.

Firstly Martin, it’s the job of the opposition to “snoop” as you so colourfully put it and find weaknesses in the government.

The embargo is a particular squirrel that’s being let loose at the moment, usually by those who don’t actually know what an embargo is of course.

Information released under an embargo is covered by that embargo. This is an agreement entered into by both parties.

That same information, discovered in a different way is not subject to the terms of the embargo.

An easy way to explain why this has to be the case is: if a journo was digging and found information that someone didn’t want released, that person could release the information under embargo and control its dissemination – as I said an embargo only covers the info released that way and agreed to by both sides.

Digging around an open server and finding info (a) isn’t illegal and (b) isn’t constrained by the embargo terms that relate to an officially released document.

As I said yesterday, the journos are stroppy because they didn’t think to do it themselves. I’d suggest that’s because the media companies have done away with the experienced and wise old heads and replaced them with pretty and cheap talent.

I think Barely Sober’s only excuse is that he was occupied elsewhere but Pol Corrs and Bus Eds have no excuse for not assigning someone to the task.

Proof is in the delivery of policy well if that was the case why didn’t Jacinda carry on with Bill English reduction of poverty which was working with the figures to prove it. No that would mean producing facts which is a tad above Jacinda’s mentality and to prove that why has it taken her two years to do something about it as she told people in Parliament that it was a travesty that her bill was not drawn from the ballot as it would have saved thosands in poverty.

Two months on remand for sharing a video. I know it’s a truly disturbing video – and that the kid is probably guilty of sharing it, but yet I still feel uncomfortable about this. I’m not sure I can really explain why.

It’s reliant on an objective decision as to what constitutes ‘disturbing’ material. Objectively, what is the difference between the video he shared and the violent video games and movies that people see on a daily basis (yes, I know that people actually die in this video).

In a sense, censoring and punishing people for watching or sharing videos like this is an aspect of censoring freedom of speech (yea, at a stretch). But if someone can deem this video as ‘disturbing material’, then what’s to say someone decides videos of say, Ardern with CGI horse teeth is ‘disturbing’ and should be banned?

Considering the Budget was rather ordinary and gives millions to health and education pretty much as budgets always have, was it wise to attempt to pass it off as some novel new well-being exercise (as Ardern promoted it at the United Nations, and has so hyped it here and internationally since) when the corollary of that position must basically emphasise New Zealand at present should be on the List of Shithole Counties.

As the Guardian UK, international edition, observes –
New Zealand ‘wellbeing’ budget promises billions to care for most vulnerable
Measures to combat family violence also received a record investment of $320m, in a bid to tackle the country’s entrenched family and sexual violence statistics, which see the police respond to a domestic violence incident every four minutes.

Child wellbeing, long a passionate focus for Ardern, who is in charge of the portfolio, will receive more than $1bn. According to Unicef 27% of New Zealand children live in income poverty, defined as going without necessities such as nutritious food, healthcare, and a warm, dry home.

The Guardian’s correspondent, Eleanor Ainge Roy in Dunedin, does report –
After more than a year of curiosity and speculation, New Zealand’s Labour coalition government has unveiled its “world-first” wellbeing budget, to widespread praise from social agencies charged with looking after the country’s most vulnerable people.

But also –
Ang Jury, director of Women’s Refuge said the increased spending was urgently needed and her sector was “over the moon”, despite Women’s Refuge itself not receiving a boost.
New Zealand is among the worst for family and sexual violence in the OECD.

Or –
Close to half a billion would be spent on new frontline mental health workers stationed in doctor’s surgeries and Indigenous clinics, with the government aiming to help 325,000 people with “mild to moderate” mental health and addiction needs by 2023-24.

Note two things in this: “Indigenous clinics” with a capital ‘i’, and
the indicative proof that “325,000 people” are moderately mad – must be – because their needs won’t have been met until 2023-24 … so don’t visit New Zealand until after then.
[may change – there should be an Election in 2020]

Is Ardern’s “Well-being Budget” a wishful “Get Well” card – just another bloody slogan

    My “sole motivation” is that National’s pride in and endorsement of data theft will inevitably make things harder for those of us whose jobs include ensuring data privacy. Donna Miles-Mojab seems to have open access to Stuff, and she’s giving her views again today.

Miles-Mojab, born in Britain to Iranian parents, is an example of how difficult it is for many Western-born Muslims to integrate with the West.

Her views are cynical about the West if not purely anti-West. Take a column of hers from a year or two back in the Herald. Miles-Mojab argued that ISIS should be dealt with diplomatically as genuine nation states are. She wrote this:

“Isis is a modern state that responds well to the needs of the population under its control. It acts by consensus and by entering into joint ventures with local populations through the tribal leaders.”

  Make Mexico pay for the Wall!
  It’s an interesting problem. You’d think Mexico would team up with the US to patrol the Border and also attack the Cartels and finally clean then up.
  Thus reducing the horrendous crime Mexico’s border towns and cities suffer from.
  But Mexico is so corrupt the Govt is probably happy the Cartels use SA illegals to divert US Border Patrol resources so they can then smuggle the drugs over.
  I guess Trump may be thinking by stuffing up the Trade that will create more pressure on the Govt that the Cartels exert.
  I’m not so sure that’s going to work.
  The only thing which will work is change the Law so illegals get taken back over the border and released into Mexico not released into the US- where they just disappear.

There were suggestions from Andrew little a while ago that sexual assault cases the defendant should have to prove they are innocent. This is one reason why that should not happen, but also I believe that someone who makes a false rape claim should face the sentence that the person would of faced if found guilty of rape

  There were no such suggestions, from Little at least. There was a suggestion that, in cases where the defendant claims the sex was consensual, the onus should be on the defendant to back that claim with evidence. A bridge too far for most people, but nevertheless quite different from what you wrote.

Home detention for what this woman did beggars belief.

Not only did she cause her victim harm that is hard to imagine, she has also made it more difficult for real victims of rape to be believed.

I agree that she should have received the same sentence that he would have received, if he had raped her.

Will her victim ever be able to make a full recovery? I suspect not.
