A couple of thoughts on Sunday night’s Cricket World Cup match-up between England and New Zealand at Lord’s. Whatever the outcome, there will be a first-time winner of the trophy, and that’s got to be a good thing. And whatever the outcome, both New Zealand and England will finish ahead of Mitre10 Australia.

There IS a god!

  Agreed, KS. The only disappointment is that there is one English player, Roy, who should not be playing in the Final following his unsportsmanlike reaction to an umpire’s decision after England had used up its quota of decision reviews:

    There are a couple of perspectives that could be considered here. firstly, I agree that his display was wrong, he has been punished and accepted the punishment as they have a set of rules and everyone knows what they are before the game starts. The poms got it wrong appealing the LBW decision early on and therefore having no recourse when they really needed it. The real drama would have occurred if England had of lost the match and that umpiring decision come under close scrutiny – it was a shocker. Thankfully all’s well that ends well and we move on. Lessons learned all round.

      That’s a very fair perspective, LT. My concern about such egregious behaviour towards an umpire remains, however, given that the batsman being fined one-third of his match fee for the day was trite punishment for such behaviour. I just hope that Roy has since approached the umpire, in person, to present his sincere apologies for his aggressive outburst towards him on the field.

  I don’t know Tony, I don’t think there is a sports God. If you live in England for any period of time,you would know the English are every bit as arrogant about their sportsmen/teams and their chances for success. So, you end up in the ABE (Anyone But England) camp. To the extent you will support the Wallabies or the Boks against England. They have the biggest and best Premier League….etc.
  
  So it is with their cricket, over the past 30 years, it has had moments of brilliance, but for the most part they have been dire.
  
  And so to Sunday….can they win on home soil?

    I agree with “Anyone but England”. They are the most insufferable when they win and it’s a genuine pleasure reading what their media say about them when they lose.
    
    I’ve always thought NZ and Australia should have more of a sibling relationship – intensely competitive when we play each other but supportive when we play other people.

        I dunno about that, NZers can be almost as arrogant, even more insufferable, and often outright abusive when they achieve a little unexpected success in such events or sporting contests. At least judging by some of the comments on social media sites such as this. Although to be fair these sites are often not a totally accurate representation and tend to attract the more loud types.

  Yes Tony Stuart there is a God. And he lives in Godzone country – New Zealand. And I do believe that many will join me in prayer, whether you be devoutly Christian or nominal or something else, to pray for our batsmen in particular and most especially for the usually awesome Martin Guptill. We do pray that he can smash out a dominant innings. If he, Lord God, could score 100 that would be most awesome! Can I hear an amen?

        I saw an Indian guy on tv waving a couple of tear stained tickets he’d bought a year ago. Bish & the boys could have snapped them up.
        
        I went to see our plucky chaps pummel the poms in Wellington in 2015. Behind us were a bunch of rowdy Indians in Blackcap jerseys. Maybe some of their mates at Lords will do the same.

What a surprise, NOT!

A Christchurch GP who specializes in pain relief and has analysed studies into medicinal cannabis tells RNZ (Morning Report 12/07/2019) what was probably well known to most people. Medicinal cannabis does not relieve pain and is not better that manufactured pharmaceuticals. In his words those hoping that medicinal cannabis will be a panacea to their pain will be disappointed.

What a surprise not. Anyone listening to the debate would not learn about any benefits, and would understand it was all about getting cannabis on the streets via the back door of medicine. Like a lot of things that pass for “government” in contemporary NZ, the medicinal cannabis debate is a lie.

  Hullkiwi – the debate on medical marijuana appeared to revolve around a few sad cases of people who said that they couldn’t get relief from the pain apart from smoking cannabis. If it is shown that they can get relief from the pain from manufactured pharmaceuticals then what is the case for medical marijuana?
  
  I would agree that it appears to be a Trojan horse for the full introduction of big marijuana as a decriminalised industry. Given the problems in Colorado with big marijuana selling marijuana gummy bears that find their way into the hands of children, we should be more wise here in New Zealand.

        So Rob2, where is your debate? Do you have evidence by way of peer reviewed studies to prove the benefits of medicinal cannabis? Or is it as Scott and I contend, a disingenuous proposal using “medical benefits” of cannabis as a means of providing “pain relief” really a trojan horse for legitimizing cannabis use in NZ?

    I have never tried medicinal marijuana nor do I know anyone who has, but I’ve certainly read about people who swear by the stuff.
    So who’s to be believed, the expert or the layperson.
    
    Our society is choker block full of such conundrums

  A couple of years back I was in terrible chronic pain. In desperation I tried cannabis. Did nothing. I consulted many doctors. Nothing worked and they gave up.
  
  In desperation I had a Skype consult with a pain specialist in America. He told me to go to my GP and insist on being prescribed a drug called gabapentin. A week later the pain was gone. Shortly after I quit the gabapentin. All fixed.

    Pain is perceived and mediated through several pathways. The GABA system is one of them. GABA can also be pleasure inducing.
    
    We are immeasurably complex; even nitrous oxide can be involved. Some of the pain we sense is the internal chemical messengers hurrying up the healing. Inflammation itself is a complex process.

  I’ve had a look at the literature on THC/CBD in case it was any use in our therapeutic range of products.
  
  The “medical” version, CBD, is the alcohol variant of THC. CBD is reported as having anti-inflammatory properties. That is very common with plant essential oils. Standardised lab tests on Sprague-Dawley rats measure those affects and CBD does not rate as particularly significant. OTC products work better.
  
  I am waiting to test CBD as a possible massage oil. I won’t consider it at its present price. What we have already developed using traditional healing oils is cheap, safe and extraordinarily effective. I can now walk again.

  One GP’s “”review”” of reports, may not be the answer. For those old enough refer to the Uri Geller effect. He could magically bend spoons!!
  
  I did a quick search thru academia and found some reports that would not agree with the good Doctor.
  
  There is more to understand about this topic than one man’s opinion.
  Note: Neverr had Cannabis in any shape or form but trying to keep an open mind. And yes I do know users. None to me seem physcotic or deranged in any way shape or form.

        It’s an old ploy. You buy residential land that’s cheap because of the noise of adjacent airports, quarries, showgrounds, even gun clubs.
        
        You wait a year or two then begin the campaign to close down the activity “because it’s a nuisance”. You organise letters to the local rags, and get residents to form protest groups. You lobby the council, and gullible politicians.
        
        When the authorities finally close down the noisy activity, the value of your land leaps.

        Anyone who has driven past Whenuapai recently will have a strong sense that it’s days are numbered. There is just way too much development around the base for any other conclusion.
        With the P8’s going to Ohakea and a future second runway at Auckland International, the case for retention looks pretty weak. The Auckland component of the RNZAF could be easily accommodated at AIA. A pretty common practise overseas, including Frankfurt.

I want to know how Labour could make a issue on Social Welfare benifits when National were in power about not getting the payments they wer entitled to and the staff at Winz not doing their jobs right when now the queues start at 2.am inthe morning to get consultants to fight for what they are entitled to receive. How could this caring Government that is intent on fleecing hard working families of their needed dollars in tax to give to those that don’t work make worse mistakes than those the blame con the public into thinking they had fixed the problems by increasing benefits by millions of dollars.

      I feel your pain. Take Oriental Bay for example. The road is being narrowed, and the footpath widened. Cyclists using the footpath are expected to deal with kids darting left/right, dogs on rollaway leashes who dash off for a pee, oncoming traffic which is not regulated to keep left. This expanded area is suitable for kids on trikes, not me on a $10k bike travelling at >30km/h. It simply isn’t safe, and it’s now less safe on the road given how much less space there is to share.

  I’m with you Lance and I work in the transport industry. AT needs a complete political deconstruction, broken down and rebuilt.
  
  It is a bottomless money pit, with the aid of Auckland Council AT is on track to bankrupt and fleece Aucklanders.
  
  It has no strategy, other to want more of everything.
  
  It has poor and unqualified leadership. The leadership instead is completely political. Instead of telling interfering councillors to get lost with waste of money proposals, they embrace them. The leadership respond more favourably to political lobby groups than the real needs of Aucklanders, hence you get redevelopment of shopping areas as occured in West Lynn.
  
  So, if Wellington wants to bankrupt itself, let Lester urge Wellingtonions to embrace a “Wellington Transport”.

  Lester is actually useful. If he suggests something you can be fairly sure that the polar opposite is your best place to start.
  
  In my opinion, there is only one politician even more useful in that role. She is also prodigious in her opinions. You can just check her twitter feed and say “Right we should do the exact opposite.” 🙂

Just drove Vienna to Salzburg. Most of the way it’s 6 lanes, trucks in the slow lane, 140 kph in the middle lane and the fast lane for overtaking.
Didn’t have to drive through any towns on the way. What else needs saying?

  Did the same trip in reverse. (Well not in reverse gear, but you know what I mean ?) about 7 weeks ago. I agree – more motorways and less speed limits is what we need here. If we get that, I’m happy for more bike lanes.

    The other thing about driving in Austria and Germany (and even Australia) is that the standard of driving is much higher on these roads. You don’t have arseholes hogging the fast lane at 90 kmh. They would have a Ferrari up their arse if they were not arrested beforehand. Until New Zealanders are much better drivers there is no way you could allow them to drive at 140 here. Big Tobacco targeting Māori with e-cigarettes
The new product is the IQOS … it’s a hybrid between an e-cigarette and a traditional cigarette, which heats the tobacco rather than burns it. Philip Morris claims the process reduces the harm by about 90 percent, although experts spoken to for this investigation say the harm could eventually prove to be comparable to conventional smoking.

Philip Morris is targeting Māori in its bid to sell IQOS. It is running marketing campaigns at marae and other places with high Māori and Pasifika populations, sending people [including those who are Maori] to promote IQOS and offer discount deals. The company calls them ‘community activations’ or ‘community outreaches’.

The New Zealand government Cabinet paper quotes a British Medical Association study rejecting a gateway effect and notes that in this country smoking has continued to decline while vaping has increased.

But independent data from Italy … [indicates] close to half the 740,000 Italians who tried IQOS were never smokers, according to a study by the Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, published in the Tobacco Control journal last year. The researchers also found that of the 1.2 million Italians who said they were keen to try IQOS in the future, about half were non-smokers, raising fears “IQOS may create new nicotine addicted generations”.

The above item also mentions that in New Zealand, each year 5,000 people die of smoking-related diseases.
So March 15 to now: around 1,630 smoking related deaths if approximations are reliable enough at least for some perspective.

Is targeting Maori, and in particular younger Maori women, just serving a potential market or is it some sort of vile racial profiling?
Is it a matter for the new Race Relations Commissioner, now that after a year there is one?

And how does this issue relate to Waitangi Tribunal Report HAUORA (Was 2575) on Maori health – that the Crown has acted inconsistently with the Treaty principles of partnership, participation and (particularly) protection?

Or the practice of rahui – a prohibition against a particular area or activity, typically one in force temporarily in order to protect a resource [if Maori women, in particular, are a resource or taonga?]
Who has the authority to call a rahui on smoking and who would regard true tradition to obey one?

Or self-determination. How would Maori themselves change this issue if the principle of a rah would fail what other approach, apart from labels would change their approach – just as what changes any item of the recent so-called “Wellbeing Budget”, from any particular item that was in the previous 2018 Budget. supposedly all considered then too to exist for the well-being and advancement of New Zealanders.

And returning to Phillip Morris aspirations to help make this a healthier country – in New Zealand, Smokefree in 2025, will cigarettes still be manufactured in Petone for export across the Tasman to kill Australians?

And, so, legalising cannabis for smoking … ?

I don’t see why the Navy and Air Force need seperate facilities and why they couldn’t have joint facilities with a civilian facility. With the talk this week about regional airports needing attention, and NZF looking to buy votes with Northland, you couldn’t have Whenuapi operations co-habitated with one or two of the regional airports and naval facilities operating out of NorthPort. Obviously there is still a need to have secure facilities but they can do this in other parts of the world, why is NZ different?

Compounding the sluggishness in housing construction is a tight labor market, excess housing supply built up in the boom before the Great Recession and “most significantly” regulatory constraints on development, according to Harvard’s “State of the Nation’s Housing 2019” report.

    HP, aside from your signalling I can attest that many Sydney construction staff are brought from India and the Phillipines. They speak little English and have to be shown the basic building skills, and as far as driving earth moving machines or rollers; forget it. My relative is a kiwi, spoke English, and was adept at using machinery ($48 an hour), but this use of rubbish labour eventually caused him to return to NZ. Sydney buildings are just one example of a disaster in the waiting.

?? Four years after the surge of refugees into Europe began, the Swedish welfare state is under pressure from the population surge.

This is highlighted in an article in the New York Times that you may be able to access without paying if you haven’t used your free monthly quota. It’s relevant to New Zealand, as we have one of the highest immigration rates in the OECD and our soaring population is putting pressure on health, education, prison services and general infrastructure.

Over the last two decades, the share of foreign-born people has risen from 11 per cent of the Swedish population to 19 per cent. (In New Zealand, just as immigration was beginning to blow out, the proportion of the population born overseas was 27 per cent.)

The New York Times cites as an example the town of Filipstad, population “nearly 11,000”.

Problems in Filipstad from population pressure include refugee families of five and more packed into apartments built for two. Schools with concerns from students missing class to hunger; violent crime and drug use both increasing.

The article says:

“… the endurance of the Nordic model has long depended on two crucial elements — the public’s willingness to pay some of the highest taxes on Earth, and the understanding that everyone is supposed to work. The state ensures that working-age people are prepared with the skills for high-wage jobs, in industries like technology and advanced manufacturing.
“Sweden’s sharp influx of immigrants — the largest of any European nation, as a share of the overall population — directly tests this proposition.”

I caught the tail-end of an interview with Dr Paul Wood on Radio New Zealand two weeks ago and decided to buy his book. It is a remarkable story.

Paul Wood was 18 when he murdered a drug-dealing friend in Wellington. He spent the next 11 years in prison. By the time he was released, he
had completed a master of arts degree and had started studying towards a doctorate in psychology. But much more important than his academic progress was his mental and moral journey.

The book is divided into chapters that describe his life before and during prison, but is interspersed with brief but cogent explanations of
his approach to examining, and changing, beliefs about oneself and the world. Those were very hard lessons for Paul Wood to learn, and the
account of his time behind bars makes clear the enormous barriers that lie between most prisoners and the opportunity to lead a better life.

Paul Wood was a lucky man. He was able to find the mental resources to examine his life, and the resolve to change it. Crucially, he was supported
at critical times by family. Support is, theoretically, available to any prisoner, but in practical terms is often denied by the combination of drugs, gangs, administrative whims, and, most crucially, by the need for
individuals to overcome the adversities which in so many cases have become the norms for their world.

Some daft twits are protesting the visit of a replica “Endeavour”, but most Maori are in favour of it, according to Kelvin Davis.
According to the protestors, they are “honouring the people killed by Cook and in the resulting genocide”.
Do they even know what the word “genocide” means?
They claim the re-enactment of Cook’s voyage “is extremely hurtful for indigenous peoples, including Maori”.
How hurtful do they think the use of the word “genocide” is to the thousands of survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants, residing in NZ?
In any case, the only thing approaching “genocide” in NZ was committed by Maori against other tribes.
If it weren’t for Cook, that would still be going on to this day.

  Simple demography suggests that genocide might be an appropriate term to describe the impact of European ‘discovery’ on a huge range of indigeneous peoples across the globe. It’s a pretty loaded term, though, with the implication of intention. Most colonial enterprises were simply indifferent to the interests of the resident population, rather than actively trying to exterminate the locals entirely.

    Genocide has a specific definition and whilst it currently bandied-about with gay abandon it does have a meaning. It’s about intent not effect and requires deliberate action not accidental side-effects.

      The “intent” with Maori groups who bastardize the English language is to intimidate others into silence.
      One of their favourites is accusing anyone who suggests they start promoting contraception, especially for their teenagers, of “genocide”.

    Most colonials, in most places, actively worked for the improvement of the native peoples, even if their values and actions seem misplaced by today’s values.
    
    Sending in missionaries for the purpose of spiritual upliftment was seen to be beneficial, even if we no longer see it as such.
    
    Building hospitals, stamping out slavery, improving agriculture,… how can you call any of those genocidal.
    
    Law and order, here and elsewhere, stopped the native populations killing each other off. That in itself saved huge numbers of lives. Clearly not genocidal.
    
    Thousands of British soldiers and sailors died in East Africa battling slavery. Why?
    
    My grandfather spent years in Namibia (ox wagon, horse, no airconditioning) to help broker peace between various tribes. Why? Surely he was a genocidal pom and would have rubbed his hands in glee watching them wipe eachother out?
    
    As vege says, genocide requires intent. Unintentional disease spreading is not genocidal.
    
    But let’s just look at some facts. Why do 3rd worlders continue to migrate towards the most colonised places?
    
    Africans from Somalia etc migrate to South Africa. Why? If colonialism was so bad you’d expect the movement to be the other way around: South Africas fleeing to Ethiopia ; Maori fleeing to Samoa.

      Yes, let’s look at some facts. Only a tiny minority of the millions of European who settled in other countries ever did so for reasons other than self interest.
      The noble efforts of your grandfather to bring peace to the warring tribes of SW Africa probably went all too unappreciated by said ignorant natives. Ironically, Namibia is definitely one place in Africa where colonists deliberately attempted to murder entire populations.
      We can’t change the past, but we don’t need to cling to myths about it either.
      I happen to believe it is still possible to celebrate the achievements of men like Cook while recognising that their arrival meant destruction for unique human communities.

    Anyone who applies a modicum of logic can see that Maori are infinitely better off living in a civilized western nation than running around in a freezing grass skirt trying to avoid being tortured and killed or worse, tortured and enslaved, by neighbouring tribes.
    Just as its pure logic that killing and eating other mammals/ animals, although they taste really yummy, tends to demean us as an intelligent and ethical species currently in charge of this planet. 🙂

Definitely the word “genocide” denotes intention, Milkenmild.
“The deliberate killing of a large group of people”.
In the Maori genocides of other tribes it also included torture, slavery and cannibalism.
Accidental killing by unintentionally introducing disease cannot be genocide, or else surely the great flu epidemics and plagues that decimated millions would be called genocides not epidemics.
Some colonizations were pretty brutal, but the British did tremendous good for Maori.
Abolishing slavery and cannibalism, and introducing the rule of law were the most obvious.

  The British also gave NZ a cadastral system (surveying and land registry). These systems have proved of great importance in the economic development of nations.
  
  Unfortunately, by clinging to inalienable group land ownership, Maori have missed some benefits of this. Land needs to be transferable to be of use as security in raising capital.

    more than that, communal ownership means that it can’t be utilised productively by anyone – tragedy of the commons. Maori who tried to farm tribal land generally found that their cussies who would just take the produce created making the farm uneconomic – they were better off putting their effort into farms that they owned under or rented like everyone else. Result was Maori land was unproductive and undeveloped – good to noone.

Gosh this makes me mad

The judge said

“… the sentence Rutherford would have received without the three strikes legislation would have been about 14 months jail, which might have given him a chance at home detention. “The three strikes regime has not prevented him from reoffending,” he said.”

That’s the POINT of the 3 strikes law. He’s not learned his lesson when given the chance, so it should be maximum sentence with no parole.

I’m sure I’ve heard Justice Francis Cook’s name come up before with these stupid decisions

  Therefore, in order to protect our children, this person needs to be put in an environment where he is unable to commit further harm.
