      The Greens aren’t at 9%. Their average in 2019 over seven polls is about 5.5%. The corresponding figure for Winston First is about 3.4% – wipe-out territory.
      
      The best hope of getting rid of the flake in 2020 is for both CoL partners to be knocked out of parliament. On present figures, that’s eminently possible.
      
      SCS, I know you enjoy indulging in bleak pessimism about our political prospects, but although ditching the flake after a single term is far from a certainty, it could certainly happen. In fact, on the figures in the last Colmar Brunton poll one percentage point lower for the Greens – even if it went entirely to Labour – would almost do the trick.

However, having guessed correctly the outcome of every single election since 1989, I know very well. CoL will romp home in 2020. Just wait and watch for the next poll due out soon.         Poll predictions for a close Oz election are pretty hard to do because of their two-step voting system and all the deals that get done with preferences etc. The last election showed that exactly – I don’t think I saw a single poll that came close to the final result.
        
        The Poms are facing the same problem if they have a Brexit-related election anytime soon. Instead of just two parties in the race there will be four which makes polling for an FPP election awfully hard.

  Monique it is a case of jealousy within the iwi. Some stand to benefit from new housing because they already live on the site and others (who don’t live there) will not benefit. Classic tale of the establishment should tell them to p**s off (everyone else has except CoL politicians) but they won’t because they think there are votes in it.

      Hugh, I read what the TPA have said. However, where is the opportunity for constructive engagement?
      
      In 2016/7 National sought to reform the RMA. The 3 governing parties opposed any reform.
      
      After almost 2 years of doing nothing the CoL sets up a working group to look at RMA reform. A working group, with what as the Terms of Refetence? If the mood music coming from Parker and Hughes is anything to go by, the will be little or no opportunity for National to “work constructively with the government” over RMA reform. And nor should they…
      
      The mood music I am referring to, is the government seeking authority to tell farmers what they can do with their own farms (refer to Parker’s interview on RNZ this morning). The pretext being environmental resource protection.
      
      Then there is Parker considering centralisation of the planning and consenting processes.
      
      How is this wanting to listen to and work constructively with other parties when the CoL are indicating the direction of the Working Group?

        Hullkiwi – the irony here in Parker’s review/working group is that Judith Collins has been working on a complete redraft of the RMA for more than a year. A discussion document is likely to be released in the next few months, and National will go to the polls next year with legislation ready to go before the House should they become the government.
        
        Labour’s solution is to set up yet another working group, and kick the issue to touch until after next year’s election. National, by using its time in opposition productively and by developing new policies across a range of issues, is demonstrating what Labour SHOULD have been doing between 2008 and 2017.

No free lunch for renters, despite this government’s very best efforts.

A free lunch for landlords though, with rental shortages and tenants paying for government mandated upgrades and risks. Those unintended consequences strike again.

Falling home ownership rates and growing numbers of people renting have led to significant changes to the laws surrounding rental property in recent years.

These changes include the Healthy Homes minimum standards, the ban of letting fees and the looming reforms to the Residential Tenancies Act, as well as tax changes like the ring-fencing of rental losses.

While they are intended to improve the lot of renters and first home buyers, in ANZ’s latest Property Focus the bank’s economists warn that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

      MBIE is sending out letters to landlords demanding a range of documents to be provided or fines are payable. It’s a long and legal letter- nearly 900 words.
      
      Picture the owners of 1 or 2 rentals – some 80% of owners – getting the letter and deciding sod that for a game of soldiers, bye tenants, airbnb or sale coming right up.
      
      The tenancy compliance group clearly doesn’t have enough to do. Well as trends go, their workload will be decreasing.
      
      Property managers will be getting the letter too of course. Guess who pays for their time to respond. Yep, it’s the tenants, if there are any left.

Ihumātao protest: Kaumātua and rangatahi split over development.
The protests are being lead by mana whenua Pania Newton and her cousins, who have been pushing for the land – owned by Fletcher Building – to be returned to iwi, 160 years after it was first confiscated by the Crown.
But local kaumātua Te Warena Taua from Te Kawerau a Maki, who gave his blessing for the housing development to go forward, said Ms Newton and her cousins were disrespecting their elders by not moving on from the site. [1]

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the government would not intervene.
“Ultimately we are falling on the side of the local iwi [who support the housing development] and their position. They are not the ones leading the protest here and so if we come in over the top, it really would be undermining the local iwi in this case.”
New Zealand First MP Shane Jones urged protesters at Ihumātao to stand down and respect the wishes of their kaumātua.
Labour MP Kelvin Davis said it would be inappropriate for the government to step in and resolve the dispute at Ihumātao because its an internal issue among iwi. [2]

“It is very sad that it has come to this, with police moving in to trespass people from their land. This is a continuation of colonisation and unjust land confiscation.
“The mana whenua of Ihumātao have been maintaining a watchful presence on their land for the last four year years. They have planted gardens, shared knowledge and kai, and exemplified manaakitanga in the face of a corporate giant motivated by profit. – Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson [3]

I predict that the UK will flourish once out of the EU. Boris will do FTAs with US China and the ‘old” Commonwealth countries.

They will able to govern as a sovereign nation rather than having to ask Brussels or Strasbourg for permission to govern.

‘The Great Hack’ I am alerted to this morning is a Netflix documentary I should watch. One critic though says:
‘Oddly, they mentioned Obama used the service for all of 5 seconds at the start and then went on to demonize big data usage by traditional, devoted conservatives (25% of the US population), the far right as they are called by the Progressive Left (8% of the US population).

The rest of us, 66%, “The Exhausted Majority” whom I identify with wished they would just shut their yaps and accept the will of the people. Like the vast majority, I am tired of being told by the Progressive Left what I can and can’t do, say, act, think and the list goes on. This show is a poster child for that’.

I am now wary of Netflix since I learned Obama has signed a deal to release seven feature films from he and Michelle.

Robert Mueller was reluctant to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. We now know why. He just bumbled his way through it and was totally confused at times. The hearing has turned out to be a total disaster for Mueller and awful , to be polite, for the Democrats.
Even NBC and CNN say it does not help the Democrats with anything.
Chris Wallace ( Fox News and the deep state’s main defender) says it raises questions about who was really in charge of the investigation.
Those who pushed so hard for this hearing just shot themselves in the foot.

        If it helps you thinking it’s credible, Dershowitz was a Professor of Law at Harvard and a life long Democrat who has stated he voted for Hillary Clinton.
        He’s notable for defending Claus Von Bulow and OJ Simpson!
        
        I too have to work so didn’t see all of it. I see many Democrats tweeting the testimony was a disaster.
        
        I did see Mueller say this :”my investigation was never curtailed, stopped, or hindered at any time.”
        To me, that looks like no obstruction.
        Mueller also said ” that we did not reach a determination as to whether the President committed a crime”.
        So no crime was found in what was an intensive investigation.
        Prosecutors don’t ‘exonerate’ so Trump can’t claim that in a legal sense. Politically he possibly can as it’s clear there was no crime and he won’t be impeached. In fact they voted on this the other day and the vast majority said no.
        The little I saw showed Mueller stumbling and bumbling. He had to keep referring to the report- strange really.
        He also knew nothing about Fusion GPS and the Steele Dossier- also odd. Fortunately Barr and Durham do. Comey and others really are in the shit over that and how the FISA warrants were issued.

        I’ve taken a stroll through some prominent Democrat Twitter accounts, nobody is saying it was a disaster. So you’ll forgive me for not totally believing your unsubstantiated claim.
        
        Re obstruction: that was his response to questions as to whether the DOJ or White house did successfully hinder or restrict the investigation. The findings in the report are different to that, and find that multiple people, including the President, attempted to obstruct the course of justice by impeding or closing the investigation.
        
        Re a crime: the investigators didn’t not come to a conclusion around a crime because of DOJ guidelines regarding laying charges against a sitting President. That is the role of the House to determine. The investigation’s role was to gather and look at evidence, and report on it.
        
        Agreed he is not exonerated.
        
        Re impeachment: the gap is closing, 95 voted for it last week, up from 60-odd. That is without endorsement from the Speaker, but a motion moved by an individual member based on Trump’s racially controversial comments, so not the full case as it would be moved if it was really happening.
        
        I haven’t watched video so can’t comment on Mueller’s visual behaviour. However your comment about it being “Strange” that he kept referring to the report is answered above. That was always going to be what he did… Stay within the four walls of the report and not be seen as biased in either direction.
        
        Fusion GPS and the Steele dossier relate to the counter intelligence investigation, which was entirely separate. So it’s no surprise that he wouldn’t comment or know the detail on another investigation. That is outside of his purview. It was handed to the FBI as required by law, as opposed to Trump’s comments regarding being happy to accept foreign help.

The media is indulging in a “love fest” with ardern and countering that will be impossible for any leader of the National Party. “what’s in it for wynston” is also commanding a “respect” from the media well above his entitlement. As an example, look at the “furore” over Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination. The media were all over his past and launched a campaign to sink the nomination over something he “may” have done over 30 years ago yet we have in “what’s in for wynston” the most venal, spiteful, dishonest and grasping politician we have ever seen and his many past misdemeanors including many “racist” comments and attacks are almost completely ignored by the media.
  
  In the immediate future little will change but ardern will slowly lose her “capital” with the press and 2020 will bring the focus away from babies and bullshit and hopefully onto the task ahead to rescue NZ from ardern’s destruction.

      Any new leader does not have to worry about the votes of the (hardish) righties on KB. To be elected, said leader has to get NZF votes and capture some of the centre.
      
      Then there is the thing about NZ voters that we saw when JA became leader. Labour support went from mid 20’s to high 30’s with no policy change . Go figure. When Gareth talked about “lipstick on a pig” he was talking about policies, not JA.
      
      So does the National party have anyone who can pull the same stunt? Best bet (IMO) is Luxon but he can’t get into place soon enough to win 2020.
      
      Collins has softened her public face, so could pick up votes without losing her current support base. I don’t know if she would do drastically better than SB though. The Oravida thing is a bit of baggage.
      
      Simon is not a bumbling muppet – charisma-wise he just isn’t JK or JA. He is no slug, but it is what it is.
      
      If I was a Nat strategist I would be wondering how to bleed off NZF votes. Slagging off their leader may be fun, but it will take more.
      
      As leader, I would also be scratching my head a bit about which new Labour policies I can promise to repeal that will appeal to NZF or floating centre voters.
      
      WFF? Free first year uni? Something done properly that achieves what Kiwibuild has not? Won’t happen.

Running a couple of stories together. BoJo is now PM and his job is to deliver Brexit (hurrahhh). This morning TV pictures from London showed Remoaners with their EU flags protesting around Parliament Square in London. And as Mrs HK and I agreed, how many on either side of the Brexit debate knew why they were voting one way or the other. Of the 35m who voted, probably a very small percentage, because the majority are disengaged and misinformed on both sides of the debate.

Bringing matters back to NZ, 2 nights ago on Seven ssharp, Jeremy and Hilary interviewed a very eloquent 14 year old from a Wellington High School (I think it was Onslow) arguing for the voting age to be lowered to 16. Her claim was that 16 year olds can do a, b, c and therefore 16 year olds should have the right to vote.

She argued:
1. That much of what politicians do will impact her generation, so 16 year olds should have a say;
2. She and her friends were engaged they were doing Civics at school and besides manh of those with the vote are not engaged; and
3. Laws were being passed that affect her age group, so 16 year olds should have a say.

Each one of her arguments are half truths fostered by advocates for lowering the voting age, but in fact each of these half truths reveal how little the advocate really knows about the system.

If, we take each argument:
1. The actions of governments today will impact children’s and future generations. Not even half true. If it was true, giving 16 year olds the right to vote is no more valid than denying people under the age of 20 the vote.or giving the vote to 10 year olds. The bottom line is what is valid about giving a 16 year old the right to vote about the future the will be bequeathed to generations not even born yet. Equally, so much of what happens in society is nothing to do with government, but what occurs impacts current and future generations, so how would given 16 year olds improve outcomes that a politician has no influence over?

2. So she does Civics at school, as I showed in 1. above, so what? It doesn’t mean she understands very much or enough about governance in NZ to be someone who should be eligible to vote. The fact that there are many over 18 who are disengaged with the system is a damning indictment of the system and not a justification to give 16 year olds the vote.

3. So much of what govt does affects my age group. More of what govt does not affect any age group at all. In fact much of government does is not age specific (& nor should it be). Much of what government does is mundane (boring to most) as a for instance – approving the budget of the Ombudsman’s Office. Not very glamorous and not something for Chloe Swarfega to splash her face all over the telly on.

What these two issues come down to (Brexit and the voting age in NZ), is how much do people really deserve the vote; understand what they are voting on; know how much govt can or can’t influence what happens in society; and are actually engaged enough to be worthy of the right to vote?

Rather than reciting a bunch of half truths!

  When you grow up and are living in the real world, paying for everything with your own hard earned cash dear little sixteen year old you have earned your right to vote. (in my opinion).

    No representation without taxation!! We should give each vote weight in proportion to the tax paid, businesses and children included, so to win an election would need payers of about $35-40 billion in tax to vote for you. People who game system to reduce their tax will have less say.

    Just imagine for example if the girl I referred to in my post (and Sarkozygroupie has kindly posted the link above), had the right to vote. At the 2017 they would have all happily turned out to vote Labour, largely because of the free tertiary fees policy. In other words voting for a bribe to be paid for by the tax payers.

Its getting close to lunchtime so thort id share this quik easy and healthy recipe with the group. All you need is 1 banana and 2 eggs.
Mash banana in a bowl (i like mine a bit lumpy) and whisk in the eggs until combined.
Heat pan on M-H and melt a good dollop of butter. When hot, drop in about a tbsp of the mixture and cook both sides until golden brown. Makes about 4 or 5 fritters. Yu can put them on a plate in a warm oven until ready to devour. I have mine with things like goldy suyrup, or sugar lemon juice and cream. Absolutely DELISH!

      Since we’re sharing recipes for after school snacks they like a ‘spaghetti topper’
      Halve a Bread roll (Ciabatta Buns are a good size) layer heated Watties spaghetti on it, then another layer of diced Ham, cover with grated cheese, then grill in the oven.
      That helps fill them up before after school sport.

Peter Williams on Magic Radio, commenting on Marama Davidson, Green Co-Leader, mentions the Greens are not officially part of the Government Coalition, and, if I understand him correctly, he believes the Greens have a separate support agreement with Labour, and it is Labour who is in Coalition as a Government with New Zealand First – but the Greens aren’t directly.

Is this true? And, for example, how can a Green Member hold any Government office, inside or outside Cabinet, unless they are officially and legally part of the Government?

  The Greens have a Confidence and Supply Agreement with Labour. They are not formally part of the coalition, so when you hear Winston Peters get indignant about the “Coalition Government” when someone talks about a “Labour-led government”, that’s what he is talking about. In return for C&S, the Greens have a number of ministerial and undersecretary positions, but all are outside Cabinet.

Pelosi and the Dems voted to hold Barr et al in contempt, but the DOJ has just sent a letter back to her saying that they won’t prosecute and citing the executive privilege that Obama gave Eric Holder over Fast and Furious – that that wasn’t seen as a crime, so neither is Trump giving Barr executive privilege. A bad day for the Dems overall…

The description, “a person of colour” is echoing round the world at the moment. But this description makes a lot of questionable assumptions about “white” and colour generally. Especially the point on whether white or black are colours at all.

In one view, the term “people of colour” is appropriate when used to describe white people – especially porcelain white people like some Japanese,Koreans,and northern Chinese. People with this view might say Maori are people of colour, being brown, but people with black skins are really people of no colour. That is, they are not “people of colour”.

Kiwiblog experts may be able to give me a definitive view.

For the trigger, here’s a clip from a letter to the editor of the Southland Times today:

“A person of colour:” is black, brown, ginger. Obviously not white.

“A person of colour white? Of course not; white is not a colour.”

This is wrong, in my view. White is a colour, but black is not a colour.

This is a debatable point. But the people who rabbit on about “people of colour” as being non-white folk are making a big assumption about colour, and I think they are 180 degrees wrong.

      Depends on how you define “white”. It’s a pretty flaky, movable distinction.
      
      As pointed out here many times, in northern Asia you can see Asian folk who are whiter than Caucasians – the people from whom whites get a generic name. Meanwhile, in Moscow, hooligans have persecuted Caucasians for not being white enough.
      
      Iranians’ country’s name means land of the Aryans, and there are fair skinned people in the Middle East, Afghanistan, North Africa, Pakistan and India. Most Berbers, especially the Kabyles, are white.
