Wow!
Tova put the boot into Cindy on TV3 last night. I couldn’t see that coming.
And Sir John Key was on The Project and was very diplomatic in his answers to the questions he was asked about Dear Leader.
Can’t see that happening if the roles were reversed.
And TV1 poll has the fairy dust wearing off.
Is the tide turning?

  The tide has turned. The PM is not Queen and even she cannot over rule Parliament and the application of its laws.
  Ardern has made the history books by her regal decree and then going to avoid winter with the people.

    Back from Tokelau in time to get ready to go to Tuvalu with a 757 and a hercules next week.
    Or will they relocate the Otago as well, so she can have the trifecta on hand.
    All this to talk about the climate emergency.
    Maybe she can discuss her carbon footprint at the conference.
    I see Lisa Davies is just loving following her around, great work if you can get it. This is like winning lotto looking at this comment.

  Captain, listening to the Nine to Noon politics chat between Mills and Hooton yesterday, there was an interesting gem yesterday about the leaked URM polls. Hooton noted that Labour were on the slide in February, in fact Hooton said that Labour were having a horrible February, but that 15/03 changed everything. However, 4 months on, the slide in Labour fortunes is beginning to reappear. They also seemed to know there was going to be a poll last night. Now the other interesting point was that Mills (Labour’s pollster) was not disagreeing with Hooton on anything.
  
  Finally, Mills made it clear, that he did not sanction the releasing of his data, but given the trends and last night, it was clear the Labour/Jacinda’s spinmeisters were trying to use Tova to destabilise Bridges.
  
  Given where Jacinda is at the moment and all that is going on, she probably wish she could stay there. As I see it, she might as well, because all she does is school visits when she is here.

Is Ardern on a ‘family holiday in Tokelau as previously reported, or is this an official PM visit as TV represented last night ?
She looks as though she needs a break, but casually handed over $5M of our taxes without hesitating for some power station.

      The purpose of the voted item is to demonstrate the sovereignty of Parliament collectively and to deny a Captain personal expenditure calls.

  IF (and only IF), the PM IS on a ‘family holiday’, then why on earth has she deemed it necessary to reportedly employ the services of a RNZN vessel to convey her to her place of leisure?
  
  If that is in fact the case, it would seem to be an abuse of power on a massive scale, yet the MSM seemingly choose to ignore it.
  
  BTW: How did she from NZ to the nearest airfield (Apia, Samoa)? PriNZess 1?
  
  Again, the MSM aren’t saying.

So this march on parliament is calling for a separate Maori child welfare system.

Is there any evidence at all that Maori children are being uplifted from families with no cause? I understand that the test for taking children is extraordinarily high. The same test applies to all children. It’s just that Maori families are disproportionately violent. And that is not racist. It is just a fact. Supported by, you know, evidence.

If these folk want to convince New Zealanders there is a problem they need evidence. Going on the radio and banging on about racism and the Treaty will not cut it.

Just when you think this country can’t get more crazy it does.

  Well the ’cause’ for the case that brought attention to ‘uplifts’ was the partner having used domestic violence and smoking pot. With agreement with Oranga Tamariki steps where taken to mitigate those issues but then without notice Oranga Tamariki backtracked and got an ex parte order. So ex parte orders seem to be an issue that can be resolved. A lot of this stuff may head into the elections. Winston Peters revealed yesterday that 3 children have died since the event which has sparked the call for change, that can be looked at as further failing in the current system or a justification once carefully considered.

        Non-western cultures dont HAVE concepts such as “choice”, individual rights, gender-equality.
        Each member of the group is expected to obey the rules that have gone on for eons, or else be cruelly excluded from their community.

      1. They want $billions to be channelled directly to them (who’ll be responsible); and
      2. They want their own separate world, that would be fine, but shoving 650k of them on the Auckland Islands without a boat or a plane might be considered racist in the 21st Century.

    I had no idea those three poor little babies were Maori.
    I notice the tone of ownership in the demands that social workers stop uplifting “our” kids.
    1) They wouldnt need uplifting if Maori kids werent the most endangered in the nation.
    2) Children (and women) are NOT the property of their abusive family members.
    They are individuals with a right to safety and security.
    That may not be the belief among some Maori, but that is the law of this land.

        What is frustrating is this issue is not new, I recall coming home from the UK in the 1990s and seeing Infommercials about domestic violence. These would annoy my sister, who would say:
        “the problem is easy to solve, CYFS & the police know who the guilty parties are, but they just want more money and have more huis telling how bad “domestic violence is”. And the solution, more adverts that we must stop domestic violence!

  I would endorse a seperate Maori child welfare system. While they are at it, a seperate general welfare system for Maori too. The only caveat of course, is that it would be fully funded by solely Maori taxpayers naturally. Otherwise, they would be exploiting Pakeha wouldn’t they. And exploitation is bad, right?

    Ill thought out idea, you can’t exploit a minority for a 160 years or so to then simply expect them to have economic and other parity to be able to go it alone – work, not welfare. Although not universal, people who once cared for themselves lose that over generations when dispossessed of their land and culture. Continuing to work to restore that loss will mean standing equally and not separately. You might be the “Proper Ghandi” but you were not at Gallipoli nor in the Maori Battalion fighting for New Zealand, your children were not prevented from speaking Maori, were not in some cases sent to boy’s homes and borstals where some were abused, and did not in some situations begin to lead the lives of outlaws to the anxiety and often shame of their forefathers (many of whom had taken to the drink once returning from the theatres of war) who had thought defending their country would bring them equality. As a Clever Ghandi you may have learnt that it is the host that divides up the cake for guests and family alike.
    So there is work to be done. I recall reading of a painter or historian describing Maori canoeists in the 20th Century, pointing out the strong physiques of even the oldest in their 60s. I wonder what those men who may have dragged their canoes across the isthmus between the Manukau and Waitemata may have thought of the size of their contemporaries we saw debating the Imumatao issue and if they might have benefitted from both working the and land putting to sea.

      Interesting, but irrelevant. If separatists want distinct welfare systems, priviliging one over others, then they are welcome. They should not, however, expect those excluded to then fund it. This proposal is both logical and reasonable.

        Many Maori reach parity- and many do better than that.
        It takes work and effort. We all have equal opportunities in this country. That said many of our social programs and institutions actively practise Positive Discrimination to give preference to Maori.
        Unless you think Maori are less than capable than others?
        I’d also observe that saying Maori have been exploited for 160 years is just ignorant rubbish.

I’m curious about something regarding the Ihumātao dispute – does anybody know why Te Kawerau a Maki (the local iwi) lost in both the Environment Court and the Waitangi Tribunal?

It doesn’t seem to be disputed that the land was stolen by the Crown in the 1860’s during the Land Wars. That seems like a straight-forward breach of the 2nd article of the Treaty and there aren’t any obvious complicating factors, so why did the decision go against Te Kawerau a Maki?

Re-reading the Tribunal’s decision could shed some light on the situation, maybe even be the first step towards a resolution.

      Thanks trout, that makes sense. And a quick bit of googling found an online copy of the Te Kawerau ā Maki Claims Settlement Act 2015.
      
      The Crown acknowledged fault, compensated the iwi for their loss, and matter was (supposed to be) settled. That being the case Fletcher was being generous in making any sort of deal with Te Kawerau. The cynic in me wonders if they did so to avoid the hassle of further court action… but regardless of motive the fact that Fletcher and the iwi talked like adults and came to a mutually acceptable arrangement is a good thing.
      
      Which means the protesters have absolutely no moral or legal right to be involved at all. They should be told in no uncertain terms to piss off.

  Land wasn’t ‘stolen’. It was confiscated as part of a penalty for actions by the tribe. The rights or wrongs of that action is up for dispute, but you’re using emotive language that is loaded in meaning.
  The value of the treaty of waitangi tribunal reports on the history can be low. The evidence presented by claimants varies from documented evidence to verbal history that contradicts written evidence, and when you say that the confiscation is contradiction of article 2 of the treaty, how do you rectify the breach of article 1 by some tribes?
  Many tribes were warned that they would lose land as punishment if they sided with rebellious tribes, while those that did not such as the Arawa or Ngati Porou did not have land confiscations and maintained great relations with the government.

    And the Iwi recently agreed to sell the land to Fletchers.

    Punished under what Law, and with what proof? O Malley says it was arbitrary action taken on unsubstantiated rumour. NZ did have Courts then but no effort was made to have the ‘confiscations’ proved legal in advance as there was no law permitting confiscations, not even in the Treaty – as the settlements show.

Meanwhile David Rankin, who described himself as a senior leader of Te Kawerau ā Maki, said he would lay a complaint with police over Ardern’s “interference” at Ihumātao.
The complaint would allege Ardern had interfered in a legal transaction, and in doing so would deprive the iwi of dozens of homes.

Ardern was stating what was simply so bloody obvious: that nothing should be built right now.
Even I can figure that surely any construction at present would face immediate destruction.
But for those who wonder by what authority Ardern could make her “captain’s call”, it will be very interesting to see what response David Rankin’s action precipitates.

  Well it had already been through the Environment Court, and the Iwi Authority for the area were supportive of the development, and it was private land.
  
  So the Prime Minister has interfered in a private commercial contract, and this will affect the cost to both parties, the viability of the development, and the confidence that investors will have in entering future commercial transactions.
  
  It also sets a precedent for non-involved yahoos to exercise a veto over anyone else’s business for whatever reason they want to dream up.
  
  So yes, its a pretty bloody serious mistake to have made!

  As a concession Fletchers brought the dispossessed into the deal to smooth the pathway which was accepted by 97% to 3%.
  
  Now a dipshit pm “selected” by “what’s in it for wynston” has elected to show support for that 3%.

    Right Yvette @ 8.36 am as many are enjoying the irony of the COL feeling the effects f more unintended consequences. This problem started when the development resulted from being designated a SHA by National or 500 houses. Had more progress been made we would not have been surprised if many of them would have been quickly claimed as Kiwibuild. For that matter we might even suspect they are now included in their numbers as “contracted” as there are likely to be very few if ant completed in this term.
    The irony is also increased as this is all taking place in the most needing housing market the would help the most needy most. Added to which we might expect the bulk of the protesters will take time out to seek more hardship grants from the nearest WINZ office.
    It is also amusing that while this protest rages on another protest further south is for a separate social welfare system for the natives. That should work out well. Yeah, not likely.

      Fletchers have agreed to give some of the land back as Settlement.
      ‘- Plans for the site have been developed in partnership with mana whenua in such a way that supports their sustainable kaitiakitanga of the surrounding area. This includes devoting a quarter of the site along the boundary of the Stonefields Reserve to protect and enhance connectivity, especially from the village. This piece of land within the development area will be the first time since the land confiscations of 1863 that land will be returned to mana whenua. The agreement to have this land returned to mana whenua was negotiated between Fletchers, Makaurau Marae Maori Trust and Te Kawerau Iwi Tribal Authority. Auckland City Council was consulted during this process.
      
      – The protest group SOUL does not represent mana whenua of Ihumatao.
      
      – Members of the United Confederation of Tribes along with members of the so called, “Kaitiaki village” do not represent mana whenua of Ihumatao.’

How about we fact-check this. Firstly, Labour hasn’t been government for “the past three years”; Winston Peters annointed them in October 2017, a mere 21 moths ago (even though it feels like a lifetime!). Secondly there were around 66,000 state houses when Labour took office. A “nine-fold” increase would mean there are now 594,000 state houses in New Zealand, which even Hugh would find a massive exaggeration. Lastly, the “housing crisis” started well before 2008. House prices rose by more on a percentage basis under Labour between 1999 and 2008 than under the Key government.

So why does the “most open and transparent government New Zealand has ever seen” keep feeding us lies, when they are so easily proven to be lies?

  Housing crisis? Certainly huge increases in the social housing waiting list and emergency grants / motels, so for those households a crisis maybe.
  
  But why are they in housing trouble? We see sad stories in the media time to time, and it takes around 2 nanoseconds for some of their names to be found in Tenancy Tribunal decisions. Good idea if the reporters check the TT database before going public.
  
  One very recent case, the ex-tenant declined to be identified but the applicant landlord was named. Two nanoseconds later – Fail.
  
  Still the rental shortage is not helping tenants, though landlords are doing OK with the pick of good tenants and increased rents so the tenants pay for the new standards, compliance and risks..

    There is a problem with the cost of rentals.
    Here’s an example. My son just moved from a rental property in Oranga, which is a state housing area dating from around 1950.
    The house he rented was ex state house done up to a good standard, but still just a basic home without a garage. Rental $710/wk
    That’s adjacent to an industrial area with a lot of working class people who would thus be hard pushed to find reasonably priced decent housing anywhere near their work.

    the government has imposed new standards for insulation and heating that owners must meet
    the government has encouraged and incentivised tenants to “dob in” landlords
    the rights of tenants to have pets etc and not be evicted have been strengthened
    
    and surprise, surprise, rentals are being withdrawn from the market and sold on, or popped on airbnb.

  Unfortunately it has been convenient to blame politicians from all parties for the so called “housing crisis”, as if politicians actually understand market forces and the inputs that affect prices.
  Houses are an asset, just like shares and bonds. Asset prices are determined predominantly by the cost of capital used to purchase them.. in this case mortgage rates.
  Since the mid-1980’s, inflation, and therefore interest rates have been steadily declining all over the world. There are a whole lot of structural and secular reasons for this which I won’t go into.
  But as interest rates fell, along with the deregulation of the financial markets (making access to credit easier), asset prices increased. Sharemarkets have continued to rise over that time despite a couple of serious corrections and economic contractions, bond prices have increased and house prices have risen. This has been going on for nearly 4 decades.. not the last 9 years of the last government.
  Labour started the deregulation process in the 1980’s and kicked the price appreciation game off. Central banks now control the global economy via interest rates and although politicians can tweak the supply and demand levers, its the price and availability of credit that will determine prices and affordability over time.

The government faces somewhat of a perfect storm at the moment.

There is a lot of noise around a number of issues, but the problem is that the government, having never heard of the silent majority, tends to respond mostly to the loudest.

The real question is how the silent majority are going to view some of the issues.

Rent a crowd protesters vs property rights?

1. Who’s paying to support the “Rent a crowd mob?”
2. Is the public going to have much sympathy for a bunch who clearly don’t have tax paying jobs to go to?

Cultural integrity vs Dead kids.

Frankly I view this as a treaty breach, and it’s not the Crown in breach.

Cancer, health care in general.

The perception is that after all their bleating in opposition the current lot have failed dismally to maintain spend on health care, let alone increase it meaningfully.

Frankly I think National should use healthcare as an excuse to slash this government’s vanity projects. Who’s going object?

I found this newspaper clipping. I think it gives National some hope.
“Mr Veitch claimed that many people believed Labour was spending too much, was interfering with individual liberties to an extent that was excessive, and had surrendered its own decision- making responsibilities to a series of committees, boards and Royal Commissions.”
The clipping is verbatim except that I changed one word. I changed the word Reform to Labour. The clipping is from the Auckland Star of 7th June 1927.
Reform had won the 1925 election by a surprisingly large margin. But in the lead up to the 1928 election they were looking decidedly desperate. Gordon Coates, who had looked impregnable in early 1927 then lost to Sir Joseph Ward in 1928.
Those who do not study history are condemned to repeat its mistakes. I believe it is far too early to write off Soiman Bridges.

  We progressed from hand sowing grass seed (and sprinkling it on sheeps’ backs before sending them back into the hills) to sowing grass on hills by plane.
  
  That plus GE modifying some hard wood species to make them grow fast would be more promising than NZ’s Mao-like plan to hand plant forests. Slow, hard labour, and we have to bring in the poor of the Third World to do it. How can that be economic?

    A multi drilling tracked machine with a set depth level despite undulating ground would be a good start. Probably able to measure the hole depth by laser against the auger to auto shut down by clutches individual to each drill drive, once depth is complete. Probably something like that already exists somewhere in the world, even on NZ farms of some type, but if not a good engineering company would easily achieve it. The drilling would be behind the machine of course, with cut out tracks to move between rows. Even a platform across individual drills for a single operator on a PTO with lift, one driver, one planter 3 holes at a time, maybe 4. Put a contractor on a bonus and they’ll come up to speed. Thinking about it might give Shane a head ache.

    Jack5- in the 1960’s and 70’s contorta (wilding) pine seeds were spread by helicopters and top dressing planes in several high country areas. This was organised by central and local government as an experiment to mitigate erosion.
    Most adjacent landowners at the time were totally against this planting ( some of which was also done by hand) because they feared the uncontrollable spread of these weed pines onto their properties – which is precisely what happened.
    There is no redress from the public planting authorities for the environmental damage this ill- advised experiment has caused to both publicly and privately owned land.
    There is no commercial or ecological use for these windborn, fast spreading weeds and they are not eligible for sequestering carbon.

    The debate has been skewed into a race based issue.
    But what I want to know is how do the authorities in these matters monitor and take responsibility for the actions of the people into whose care these children are placed?

      The life outcomes for foster children are horrendous. They feed our prisons.
      I am firmly of the opinion that a social workers tut tut about family circumstances and intervention has on balance worse outcomes than leaving a child in its regular home. There are risks but the risks of fostering are enormous.

    Some years ago a neighbour of mine was reported to CYPS because her husband was hitting her 5 year old child, (his stepchild).
    As this guy had already nearly killed another child, the wife was given the choice, either give up your young son or stop living with your husband.
    She chose her son over this man.
    A few years later I bumped into her.
    She seemed much happier than she used to be.
    For some years her and her husband had lived apart, and he visited.
    Eventually they reunited, when the boy was big enough to defend himself.
    Also they moved close to a family friend who the boy spent a lot of time with, which helped reduce stress in the home.
    Surely there are alternatives available besides the current dramas.

        ‘Nothing is currently stopping whanau/ family members from taking a threatened child into their care.’ Once the authorities have intervened I’m sure there are difficulties. But it does seem the preferred 1st step if things have reached that stage, that is why Judicial oversight excluding ex-parte orders seems a better way to go. Maybe a nominated person(s) moving into the home in the interim if there is immediate concern to sit it out before the matter goes to Court ASAP for consideration of the next steps. Often these things could develop around a single event and some immediate authority into the situation could be very helpful. Remembering that it isn’t always babies, or always the male, intervention could also act as a timely warning against someone not understanding the limits.

    I would have thought it much more virulent at the end of the 19th century when the memories were still fresh.

In one week we have had,
A abuse of power by the Prime Minister with the blackmail of Jouurnalsts over Ihumatoa.
Abuse of power by DPM Winston Peter’s with his comments about Journalists involved in poll results calling them arrogant morons.
And now Andrew Little’s abuse of Parliament by changing a law that was used for Parliament to pass to now being at Labours discretion to how it is written. The media are not holding the Coalition to their responsibility instead they are giving a free pass for what ever they please.

I see Dame Tariana was in attendance at the protest today about the uplifting of Maori newborns.
Does it ever occur to her that maybe her belief that Maori girls aged 13 to 17 having 4 times as many babies as any other race equaling “a good thing” and “our fertility” might play a part in the problem?
How many of those babies were raised by both biological parents…or even just one?
I know Lilybing wasn’t.
(Lilybing was the child of a 13 year old and 17 year old, foisted onto a mother of 4, pregnant with her 5th child.)
James Whakaruru was born to a 15 year old girl.
The brute who beat him to death is probably out by now.

Marcel Sydney Geros, armed with a box-cutter, attacked and injured a woman on an early-morning run in Christchurch as he tried to kidnap her. Now he is out of prison and under supervision.

Geros has been in trouble before. Geros was jailed in 2009 for seven years and three months for bashing 73-year-old Kaitaia man Alexander “Don” Cameron in his bed. Geros also stole from the ambulance that came to save the victim.

A rational conclusions is that law-biding people might be much safer if they were allowed to carry pistols to defend themselves.

Christchurch citizens can wonder whether Geros is one of the ex-prisoners the Justice System and associated do-gooders seem to be helping settle in the city.

Judge Raoul Neave said he expected a public backlash for releasing Geros on supervision.
