I’m glad the Christchurch City Council has decided to go with a plain pedestrian bridge across the Avon. With apologies to the artists (who I’m sure put a lot of effort into their submissions), most of the designs pictured in the article are butt ugly.

The Graham Bennett design looks like you’re walking through a dinosaur skeleton.

The Julia Morison’s design requires a framework of industrial looking pipes, plus the mist created would ruin the view of the river and its banks.

The UoC design (is this is the same as the Warren/Mahoney bridge inspired by an eel trap?) looks like a giant poo, and almost completely blocks the view of the river.

The Ben Foster design isn’t too bad. I wouldn’t mind if they went with that one.

The river itself and its banks are by far the best part of the view here. Keep the river clean and the landscaping maintained, and a simple bridge that fades into the background will create a much better scene than some try-hard “look at me” artistic bridge design.

There seems to be very little information or updates in the media on the Pike River drift re-entry.

Of the millions of taxpayer dollars allocated to this project, is there no finance for a few diagrams or photographs to inform anyone of what is happening?

Drift from 30m – 170m examined, nothing found
Significant dewatering infrastructure was installed in this area, to assist with the volumes of water running down the mine drift. This includes two weirs, gabion baskets, concrete blocks and “grizzlies” that filter heavier material from water.
“Because of this, there were no expectations that items of interest would be found in this area, and New Zealand Police have confirmed this is the case,” Mr Pattinson says. – Tuesday 25 June 2019, Pike River Recovery Agency

How much water does flow down the drift?
Significant dewatering infrastructure was installed in this area,
Was any of this infrastructure installed prior to re-entry, or has the drift been approximately 8 years and 6 months without a weir or silt bed?

  Because they were driving vehicles in the 2.3km to get to work at the worksite,they had to leave the drifit open for worksite utes etc.
  So they have put some dams across the drift to help control the water.

  They have gone into the mine less than the length of two rugby fields, and the first half of that could be seen with am Eveready torch from outside the entrance.
  If the same rate of progress continues it will be several decades before they even get close to the site of the event. I hope they give up on this fruitless venture, and leave the remains of those who died forever with their mates !

Nanny State govt strikes again –

The Government is signalling its intention to slash the price of imported electric and hybrid vehicles by up to $8000 in a bid to make greener cars cheaper for Kiwis.

But it is also planning to slap a new fee of up to $3000 on the import of vehicles with the highest greenhouse gas emissions.

The Government has today opened a six-week consultation period before it introduces new legislation in Parliament later this year.

The plan, according to Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter, will get more Kiwis into cleaner vehicles by reducing some of the cost burden.

It would come into force in 2021.

A $22,000 Toyota Hiace would cost an extra $1400 after the fee was applied.

Yhe move comes after the draft Independent Climate Change Committee’s (ICCC) report into how New Zealand can reach the 100 per cent renewable target, obtained by the Herald, revealed the committee recommended the Government prioritises getting more electric vehicles on the road over reaching 100 per cent renewable energy by 2035.

      Regrettably (and I say this as a long-time National Party supporter), Simon DOES come across as ineffective and sadly, very unforgettable . He is also perceived as being very little different in his beliefs to those held by the COL, and indeed, seems to agree with way too many of those they are implementing.
      
      In the absence of any leader with charisma, the Nats are likely to remain in opposition for some time yet.

        I would never put Simon Bridges down as a charismatic leader and if that is all the voter of NZ wants then we are permanently screwed.
        
        He is the leader of the National party and they, unlike labour, are not a one trick pony.
        
        Look at the front bench of labour including the drunk charlatan and list one person that would have risen above the rank of a low end middle manager at a local op shop.
        
        National, on the other hand, present a formidable team and my belief is that Simon is holding himself and them back a tad until he deems it time to launch the campaign be that this year or early next.
        
        I have stated many times that all the “body blows” landed thus far will all be forgotten but the apologetic numbnuts we all know as labour, watermelon and “what’s in it for wynston” supporters.
        
        However, a concerted and sustained attack prior to the election for say 9 or 6 months will have a devastating effect.

  Fully electric cars are not practical for people that can only afford one car. You either need to be happy to never leave town, or have an SUV in the garage for road trips.
  
  Plug in hybrids are much more practical, but expensive.
  
  The average age of New Zealand cars is 14 years. That means that the average value of a New Zealand car is about $6,000! So the risk of this scheme is that it is a subsidy to rich people. I might be wrong. It will be interesting to see the Regulatory Impact Statement that accompanies the Bill.
  
  Ironically the nation with the highest electric vehicle use is Norway, on the back of huge subsidies. Financed by the wealth generated by exporting lots and lots of petroleum. 🙂

    Anyone seen an updated analysis of the lifetime environmental impact of EV’s compared to standard petrol powered vehicles ?
    
    Last one I saw concluded that over its lifetime, a standard EV had an impact somewhere between a Jeep Chreokee (the V8 version) and a Hummer. So once again a policy designed to increase the negative environmental impact of human activity because of the feelz.

      Therefore,it is ‘better’ to drive it until you can’t repair it anymore.

        Also the materials used, and the disposal/dismantling costs. Whole life cycle is what we’re talking of here – if using and discarding when it breaks significantly is the most economically and environmentally efficient, then why should we not do that ? In practice, that’s what happens, do you spend $5K rebuilding the engine and transmission in your $4K value old run-about ?

  I note Genter says the move would be revenue neutral –so does that mean the EV owners will start paying a form of road user tax ? Otherwise it can never be “revenue neutral”.
  I wonder what the other side of the Green Party think –the ones that go on and on about the poor, because yet again this is a Green policy which will help the” wealthy latte drinkers” at the expense of the poorer members of our community.
  BTW I read where EV sales in some European countries are falling as the subsidies are removed or there is talk of them being removed.

      It’s not that black and white. It’s graded so the maximum either way is a $8k subsidy or a $3k tax.
      
      Most Utes etc are commercially sold, so I doubt that companies will quibble when $1400 gets added to a $41k Ford Ranger that they’re already writing off as a business expense for tax purposes etc.
      
      Frankly, anything that encourages the middle classes to opt for a sensible hatchback or wagon over a stupid mid or full-size SUV is a good thing!

  As per srylands, if you can only afford one car than your use cases have to be pretty limited to choose an electric car.
  
  One issue that occurs to me is that NZ’ers are great ones for towing things – boats, trailers, caravans. As I understand it, the majority of electric cars are simply not up to towing anything heavy – and if they can tow then the range is greatly reduced.
  
  So unless you’re prepared to pay mega-bucks for a Tesla SUV which is rated for towing, in the immediate future you’re still going to need a REAL car.

      I believe they have a Hyundai Ioniq, and presumably it is the Ministerial self-drive car which she is entitled to.

Note the government has effectively stalled future sales of electric or hybrid vehicles by indicating it will introduce legislation to make them cheaper – who will buy one before the rules come in?
Meanwhile, sales of utes, for which a levy will be added, will fly out the door before the price increases.

  A few issues not accounted for:
  1. It takes 3x as long to charge a vehicle than to fill one with fuel. So 3x as many charging stations needed to cope with current demand.
  2. Do we have enough electricity supply to charge these vehicles?
  3. Business’ that need utes/vans to operate (like mine, couriers, deliveries etc) will be hurt by this.
  Impacting profits and therefore employment.
  4. Considering the max range of these vehicles is less than fuel, will this limit the distance people can travel on holiday? Tourism impact etc.
  5. Considering EV’s will be concentrated around the cities, how does this impact congestion?
  6.Considering EV’s will not be paying RUC’s (or have they just not told people that yet) and do not use fuel that is taxed/levied. Where will the cost for roading/repairs come from.

    ‘The lawyer for one of the victims of Jeffrey Epstein said President Trump was the “only” high powered person to help him with his investigation, contradicting claims by some that Trump is implicated in Epstein’s crimes.’
    
    The Lawyer, Bradley Edwards was the Prosecuting Attorney in 2009 when this first went to Trial in Florida.
    There’s a Video in the link of an interview with him last year after he defeated Epsteins efforts to have the case thrown out. Trump is mentioned from five minutes in. Trump did this back then. Edwards, when asked if Trump was involved with Epstein and the girls said “not at all”.
    All the Documents from the original case have now been ordered to be unsealed by the Court. These detail the names of all the people accused by the girls. Now that the NY case is underway, more girls are coming forward.

I would expect the new UK PM will replace the lame duck US Ambassador fairly quickly rather than wait until his term expires in six months.
The problem could be if the leaks continue and the next person also has a dim view of the Trump administration.
Even with the the current chap out of the way the repercussions will be an ongoing headache for the UK for as long as Trump remains President.

Twyford has ruled it out as the Prime Minister has said their will be no more fuel taxes in her time but you would have to wonder if she wins the 2020 General Election that she will forgo her promise and allow them a fuel tax.

  IIRC that promise of no new fuel taxes was made under pressure in parliament during a few months of rapidly rising petrol prices. I think it probably caught Mr Twyford by surprise as the entire purpose of legislation he had just introduced was to enable regional fuel taxes.

Once again we get dogma and feelz over good governance and decision making. But hey ho, we are the socialist “green” utopia of Aotearoa, where bullshit won.

This policy is wrong on so many counts and like the plastic bag policy, it will do nothing to cut NZ’s emissions.

1. First and foremost, NZ does not currently have and will not have an electricity network that is emissions free. Currently, 15% of NZ’s electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, where do the urban, green beltway luvvies believe (these people don’t think. So, I refuse to suggest they do) the country’s future electricity supply will come from, if we cover 3.5mill vehicles to electric?
2. As old golfer has said, it will screw up the market for such vehicles and “high emissions” vehicles until these changes are implemented;
3. Rather than lowering the price of such vehicles it will add additional compliance costs and distort supply, so cost will go up.

So, well done Genter, you have demonstrated for us all once again why you should be nowhere near government, you do not understand how a country, and an economy function and you do not understand how New Zealanders live, do us a favour and go and live your hippy lifestyle somewhere else other than NZ.

    Mike Cernovich is a lawyer. He filed court documents in Florida to have the hitherto heavily redacted files released. Cernovich is not the “source” of anything.       “Poverdee” would mean that none of the poor would even know what a KFC box looks like yet alone have a standing order at the local home of the “Colonel”.
      
      I count myself and my wife as relatively comfortable yet we have always had a decent garden and a freezer always stocked with fruit and veges from our own property.
      
      Takeaways are a rarity and only when I can’t be bothered cooking and apart from the odd snack of KFC in Thailand, when they say hot they really mean fucking hot, we cannot remember the last time we bought fast food.

  Read the following:
  
  Mohamed held a knife to the terrified woman, told her he would kill her, and punched her as she tried to fend him off.
  
  Eventually, he let go of her and told her to get out of the car. Handing her a pair of jeans he told her to change her pants.
  
  Once she was back in the car, he drove off from the gardens at speed. Once mobile – as she begged him to drop her off at a nearby mosque – the violence changed from physical to psychological.

Typical bullshit interview by Winston on The AM show this morning. Rambling on incoherently, not answering questions, then attacking Ryan Bridge when he was put under pressure. It’s a disgrace that this charlatan has sucked off the public tit for 40 odd years. What has he achieved other than lining his own pocket? I cannot stand the man, and struggle to understand how he gets in every three years. People need to wake up and realize he’s a conman, not fall for his nonsense rhetoric, which he never backs up. What happened to all those bottom lines you Winston?
