Fewer than half of students consistently support freedom of speech and two fifths favour censorship and no-platforming of controversial speakers, research has shown.

A “culture of conformity” may also be having an effect on undergraduates, who are often too intimidated to espouse unpopular views on campus, according to a report by the centre-right think tank Policy Exchange.

Deep-rooted reform is needed at universities, which should establish academic freedom champions reporting directly to the vice-chancellor, it says.

Those survey charts are alarming. I suspect stats in NZ would be similar. The cartoon really does say it all.

    It’s a pity people are so quick to down-tick you; you have a valid point, although it requires some nuance.
    
    It is true that classical liberal fascism would be an oxymoron. However, ‘liberal’ in the modern American sense of the word is quite another matter: The types who believe in violence as a means of advancing their political causes and in shutting down or banning the expression of points of view with which they disagree certainly share these characteristics with fascists, whereas these same characteristics are anathema to classical liberalism.
    
    It’s fairly clear that the headline cited by krazykiwi refers to the latter sense of ‘liberal’, so no, in this case I don’t think it’s an oxymoron to refer to ‘liberal fascists’. It might be overstating the case – and it might not – but it’s not a contradiction in terms.

    Only if the term “Liberal” is used correctly. Unfortunately, the people that call themselves Liberals these days are not actually Liberals. They are often closer to Fascists (Globalist instead of Nationalist but most of the other requirements apply). The term Liberal has become ironic when applied to these people.

Auckland Ports look destined for Northland move after report finds it ‘economically and environmentally unviable’. A final working group say Aucklands current port operations are no longer economically or environmentally viable, it comes after the Government is considering moving the port to Northport near Whangarei.

If this gets the go ahead it will be the largest infrastructure project in NZ history costing 10 billion dollars and if Auckland and Northport can’t reacha commercial agreement the Government should introduce new Legislation to force the move. This is Winston and Shane’s baby so don’t be surprised if the costs double when and if the have to introduce Legislation to force the move through Parliament.

  Sorry, but all previous reports have shown the move is economic suicide. Ports of Auckland (,who own 40%) of Northport don’t want it, the rail line to Northland is a folly.
  
  When are we going to get honest economists and analysts who are prepared to tell these dishonest and incompotent politicians in Wellington and Auckland city to go away and try and organize a pi*a up in a brewery or to run a bath. Which historic evidence suggests they are incapable of doing.

  People don’t realise how many jobs there are owing to Auckland having a port.
  The freight forwarders will move up North and all the car importers.
  The trucking companies will move and then we have the people that support the ships. Ships agents, engineering companies, provedores, etc.
  
  It is estimated that there are the thick end of 100k jobs in Akl that depend on the port will all these people move??
  Then what about the cost of shipping all these containers, cars etc down to Akl from Whangarei?? How many containers is that?? I would estimate about 400k.
  As for exports all that come from S of Auckland will now go out of Tauranga. All No of Akl will have to travel to Whangarei.
  Another report by people who don’t know their a!@e from their elbow.
  BTW I was at sea for nearly 30 years and ended up as Master.

    Car importers have said that they will use Tauranga not any Northland Port.
    Plenty of room at the Mount but getting to and from Tauranga to anywhere else is a nightmare with the worse and most dangerous roads in the country.

  Most worrying is the very real prospect of a wholly union run ports system. The majority of inhabitants of northland are systematic labour voters including the majority of the Maori populous in the area. The ports will be controlled by this lot and the NZ economy will depend on it. Industrial action will be frequent and lengthy. There is little replacement workforce and if there were, imagine the extreme intimidation for being a “scab”. That shithole of a place could potentially hold the whole country to ransom. The whole town is infested by deadbeat layabouts, where do they think they will get drug-fee, sober workers from?

  Mr Packham has previously accused “latte conservationists” of having too much influence on forest management. He says fuel loads are now the heaviest they have been since human occupation of the continent and Aboriginal methods need to be adopted. “There’s been this determination over the last 10 to 20 years to not treat our country in the same way the indigenous people treated it for 30,000 years,” Mr Packham said. “The concept has been every fire is a bad fire. “In the Australian context you need fire to keep the bush healthy and safe.”

For people who promote diversity, the lefties a re really being divisive with there “boomers are bad” theme.

Stuff “journalists” having a sook about boomers having property but younger generations not.

Perhaps it is due to different attitudes towards money, saving, etc?

When boomers went on OEs during the 70s and early 80s they’d typically live in squats and squalid conditions shared with Aussies, South Africans and Canadians. Backpackers’ accommodation were seedy dives. They’d come home and start off with a pokey flat shared with some mates then a pokey first home which they gut and refurbish room by room and slowly build from there.

Heck, even HNZ “customers” turn their noses up at the houses boomers were prepared to live in.

More modern generations think they live in a movie: complain that economy class is not good enough. Live their OEs in high-end backpackers. When they come home they insist on a nice clean flat shared with one, or on their own, then a first home is some double-glazed wonder with fresh paint.

Then they bleat that this dream is hard to achieve.

        The whole definition of the “boomers” is that there was a “baby boom” that lead to huge wave of increases in demand as those babies grew up: schools, Plunket services, housing etc and now retirement-related services.
        
        The boomers lived their whole lives in shortages of one form or another, but their response was different. They didn’t just whine about “not fair” but instead made do with what they had.
        
        I’m not sure how you think that relates to white counterparts in South Africa but I have given up trying to understand “stephie-logic”.

        Um can’t remember a shortage of houses to buy but definitely remember the non existence of whiteware appliances in the shops in the early 70s. I only had to wait about 9 months to buy a washing machine and that was because I belonged to the PSIS and got one through them.

        The latest lot don’t know about negative equity, 25% interest rates, 2 nd and third mortgages, borrowing from Solicitors Trust Accounts scrounging second hand building materials from other people’s refurbs and demolitions etc etc.
        
        There have always been many steps on the property ladder, it only depends on how far and how fast you are willing to climb and what you are prepared to sacrifice in the process.

    High mortgage rates are a huge boon and set up young adults of 70’s and 80’s for life. They hold house prices down to ~3x incomes, and go hand-in-hand with high inflation so that within a couple of years the real cost of the mortgage was inflated away to a relative pittance as house values and incomes sky-rocketed.
    
    Compare and contrast with 30 year 4% mortgages in low inflation times with house prices 10-20x incomes – the real cost of those mortgages remains cripplingly high for decades.

  Yessssss, but …. in all fairness many younger people today start off their professional (and accommodation seeking) lives with a huge level of student debt.
  When I left tertiary training and started work, my paycheque, although somewhat meagre, went further as I was debt free. I could actually save money each week.
  My parents paid very little, if anything, for my education and neither did I. Although taxes were paid – of course.

    Sick of hearing bleating and whinging of lazy academics. My grandson is 19, an apprentice, now looking at his first home. He has not travelled, rarely drinks, and works every hour he can. Our son, did the same and has a few houses; my wife and I did the similar and are very comfortable.
    Too many self-entitled wasters out there that think everyone owes them a living and all the extras for no input.
    Wake up wokes, millennials, et al, get off your arses, give up the lattes, booze, and smokes . . . work and save!

      I had a big talk to a young friend as he was entering his first year at university.
      I asked him to consider very carefully the implications of getting a student loan. He listened carefully and seemed to agree.
      But at the end of his first year he owed $20k. He finished his 3rd year, and his father tells me he owed more than 50k. He has not travelled. He has worked most weekends and holidays except for a month off over Christmas. He doesn’t have a car, and lives at home.

      4yrs x annual study fees = $32k
      1yr x halls = $16k
      3yrs x 40 weeks minimum flatting costs ($312/week) = $37k
      (flatting costs made up of rent ($145/wk for 52 weeks!, not 40), food ($70/wk), electricity/internet ($20/week), diesel ($5/wk), insurance for contents and car ($15/wk), flights ($15/wk for 1 trip down/back and 1 trip mid-year))
      Total $85k minimum
      Income from 400 hrs work each summer @ $18/hour = $17k after tax.
      Now $8k first year free fees
      Net $60k for a 4 year degree

  Wealth is mostly about age, and also who the parents were / are of older generations. That would be those parents who lived very differently, raising their families on ‘a stitch in time’, ‘look after the pennies ….’ and ‘make do and mend’.

  In summary, the article says us boomers are older and have saved and invested, which the younger generation have not done. There is also a heavy inference that us boomers are not sharing our wealth with our children and grand children.
  
  Maybe the lady might want to put her bias in the draw for a moment, stop looking at tables of statistics and go out and sample generations of families to find out what really happens.
  
  Because I can assure the stupid lady that you can’t take your wealth with you when you depart the world of the living….

    Agreed, it’s bullshit. The situation here is not complicated – if you put aside money each year (whether a little or a lot), older people will have put aside more money than younger people. Not rocket science.
    
    Let’s do some very rough back-of-the-envelope numbers, using the article’s figures, and assuming people start accumulating wealth after they’re 20 years old.
    
    The 24-45 cohort, taking the mid-point of 35 years, has been saving for 15 years. Given their total wealth is $197b, that means they have been accumulating on average around $13b per year.
    
    The 45-55 cohort, again take the mid-point of 50, has been saving for 30 years. Total wealth $300b, means they have been accumulating on average $10b per year. (One could speculate that the expense of raising a family brings down the average for this group. The younger cohort may have paid for a few years raising a child or two, but this group will likely have paid most or all of the full lifetime cost of their kids.)
    
    Lastly we have the 55-74 cohort. Mid-point 65 years old, saving for 45 years, total wealth $744b, meaning an average of $16b accumulated per year. Slightly higher than for the younger cohorts, but not as big a difference as the article tries to portray it.

  Jordan Peterson explains to his uni students that the reason they don’t own a home and have a nice car is because they are YOUNG. He makes a good point, I was 30 before I owned a little flat and 40 before I owned a house. Now I live mortgage free, but when I was young it was a struggle.

  My then-wife and I built our first home in 1982; a 1000 sqft Craigwin home, which became the cheapest home in a reasonable street.
  
  To build it, we used our savings, and a mortgage from the Housing Corporation at 18%, which we just qualified for on our combined earnings. That left us $12,000 short, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but was in reality about 15% of the total cost. The Craigwin bloke put us in touch with an insurance company who loaned us the $12k on second mortgage at 22%, on the proviso that we took out double the value in life cover.
  
  Our house was as basic as you could want; no carpet, no garage, no driveway, but fortunately the section was pretty much fully fenced. We added things as we could afford it, and children were out of the question until we had paid off the second mortgage, which took five years (and we immediately cancelled the life insurance!). But we were in exactly the same position as most of our friends, and we made the best of it. Certainly no one in our circle moved into a 200 sq m first home with internal access garage and an ensuite.
  
  That was the reality a generation ago. Had mortgage rates been at where they are now, we would have thought we were on the pig’s back! Today, my daughter and her husband already own a town house in Christchurch; now they are building a new home, and they’ll keep the town house as an investment property, taking advantage of the low cost of borrowing. I can only wish them well.

    Reality now is bureaucracy have destroyed this approach: You are not allowed to build a house that is not completed to a high standard including painting and flooring and even landscaping FFS – and no council code of compliance = no bank mortgage – you end up paying 2x interest to a second tier lender. And you are paying $50-100k for all the council building compliance bullshit (other compliance bullshit over materials and work practices adds far more).
    
    Regulations mean it costs $2-3000/m² to build, and that is on top of the jacked up land prices from council regulatory imposts. To do small piecemeal improvements and renovations is also ruinously expensive – adding a room can easily cost $50-100k (compliance costs jack cost up massively), re-doing a kitchen or bathroom $10-$30k, so with current low interest rates it is cheaper to do it right from the start rather than putting it off till later.

        difference in materials cost is in large part due to a regulatory restrictions on importation of equivalent materials. Hideously expensive to get competing products BRANZ certified – so not allowed to use them in buildings so existing players have quasi monopolies. It’s a non-tariff barrier.

      Yes Shaun, I can remember my dad and neighbours building a right of way that way. The right of way served ours and 3 other properties in deepest Mt Roskill. The neighbours called im involved more than just the immediate neighbours and meant our dads were kept busy for ages.

    Yes Tony I got my second mortgage the same way, from a lawyer who arranged the life insurance, despite Muldoon’s draconian interest rate freeze. Later at one stage my first mortgage reached 23% interest and I admit it was a struggle.

  There are cheapish houses around Auckland, but that’s only part of the story. You might have to spend a lot of time & money getting you and your kids to work/school every day.
  The component of the property that makes it expensive isn’t the building, but the land. And then that inflates the price of nearby houses on smaller pieces of land.
  Consequently.
  It’s very hard for a family mum, dad and one kid, to buy a house.

Mr Lothian convicted of a brutal murder, had a ‘strike’ for a rather serious assault, hence faced LWOP.

The judge invoked ‘manifestly unjust’ because the relatively young age meant the offender would spend 50 or so years in prison, and because the first strike crime was not ‘more serious violent offending’. The judge did not mention David Garrett’s third reading speech but presumably in his mind this case would not quite fall in the category of the ‘worst’.
This does seem to me to be the most feckless reasons given to invoke ‘manifestly unjust’ to date. Unless the ‘three strikes’ law is tightened in this regard (extremely unlikely), it seems extremely unlikely that the judiciary will ever hand down a LWOP sentence.

Hannah Tamaki’s party Vision NZ has promised to ban the construction of new “mosques, temples and other foreign buildings of worship”, if elected.
“They are not us and we are not them,” Tamaki said on Monday, promising no “back-room” or “behind closed door deals” with “any migrant community, including the Chinese”.

In a New Zealand Election, can any political party actually offer a policy that appears to be racist? (– or whatever the appropriate word is for “religious intolerance” or “denial of religious rights”)

Who controls this and at what point should any agency, such as the Electoral Commission or Human Rights Commission, act to confirm or not that Election promises or policy is appropriate?

  I rarely watch Fair Go, but watched last night. First story: Maori not in lifts. For 4 percent of population the taxpayer will be paying to update all state-owned lifts. This girl has just cost taxpayers possibly hundreds of thousands, but at least her voice will be on the recording.
  Second story: Plastic straws on FREE milk from Fonterra. Kid says they could end up in waterways. How? Put it in pack, and put in rubbish, OR Fonterra should have said no milk for your school.
  Story three: Not enough Black Fern supporter sizes. Maybe a story, but suspect not enough potential customers to support a run at her size.
  Story four: Double packs of some Griffin’s biscuits not really double the single packs. Valid story.

“Save The Trees on Owairaka/Mount Albert” is an online petition to prevent the removal of 345 mature, exotic trees. The organiser, Samar Ocean Wolf Ciprian, goes woke, using Maori terms, such as Aotearoa and [her capitalization of] maunga (which is just a Maori word for mountain). If she was truly aware of cultural significances, she would not be challenging the local tribes’ indigenous guardianship of this land. I note that the media is using “maunga”, rather than English language words such as “hill” or “mountain”.

She further writes:
“Owairaka is a Maunga, and absolutely holds profound cultural significance [for some people]. She is also for all intents and purposes a living forest [actually, the trees are a living forest]. Aoteoroa [trying to appear non-racist] has granted personhood to mountains and rivers [but not this one]. It is part of the greatness of this land and its indigenous [racist much?] people to recognize sentient [“sentient” means capable of thinking and reasoning: so a forest “reasons”?] life. The airlifting of the corpses [emotive] of many trees killed [emotive] en masse is not the best we can do to honor (NZ English is “honour”) these deep values.”
“Allow the ancient [they are not “ancient”, a couple hundred years old maybe] Eucalpyts to help the baby natives grow.”

In my opinion, she is attempting to justify the retaining of these trees using (mainly) Maori cultural reasons, which is woke gone mad, and insulting to local Maori. She also uses the “global warming” [it’s “climate change” or “climate emergency” nowadays] argument. Her arguments about using the existing trees to provide shelter for the new natives is sound – she should of stopped there. I would not clear fell the trees myself. but add new natives.

    What is wrong with exotic trees? In Christchurch we can enjoy a drive in spring through blossom-tree lined avenues, and our Botanic Gardens contain interesting trees from around the world.
    
    Of course native forests should be protected, but has this become fanaticism?
    
    Is there any other country in the world running such a bizarre nationalist policy on trees? Meanwhilen, we are happy to plant big areas in Californian Pinus radiata, and have vast farmlands planted in exotic grasses.

    Auckland has been aware that it has a major exotic tree pest problem since at least the 1980s when Alan Esler was documenting the role of weeds in Auckland’s ecosystems.
    
    I’m happy to support the removal of Lilly pilly, Canary Is Date Palm, flowering Cherry, Tree Privet and wattle species from Auckland’s Reserves in a staggered manner.
    
    But wholesale clearance of mature exotics will probably turn out to be a boon for incoming weed propagules….Without decent, on-going maintenance may replanted sites turn into a thicket of exotic climbers and shrubs and saplings of poor form.

If as appears likely Winston has his arse handed to him by the Courts can Parliament ( the Nats) take any action against him.

I would have thought that his behaviour as regards the case has been such that he has bought the House into disrepute by dint of him being a Member.
Or does Parliament not have a code of conduct like most organisations.

Then again given the behaviour by the (cough) Members any Code would have to be very loose otherwise most of them would be sanctioned on a regular basis.

  I don’t see a mechanism to reject a an MP. The party leaders should deal with this. In Winston’s case that means his caucus and Ardern as leader of the COL. They need to find him a retirement position before he forgets them too and bites them on the behind. Confusion does as it finds and the reality can change hourly. Peters needs to be outed promptly before further harm occurs.

Golriz Ghahraman gets it right.

The Green MP is on target about the Government’s suggested firearms prohibition orders.

Radio NZ reports Ghahraman said the consultation document on the proposed measure raises significant human rights concerns.

“The one that really jumps out, for example, is warrantless search powers, so we are giving police extra powers without them being governed by our usual search and surveillance or search and seizure laws.”

Police Minister Stuart Nash (old Walter’s great-grandson) says:

“In practice this may mean a person subject to a firearms prevention order could not live in or visit a property where firearms are held, even if the firearm owner is licensed. They could not be in a vehicle which is carrying a firearm. They could not go hunting even under supervision. They could still associate with lawful gun owners, but not if a firearm is present.”

Does anyone know National’s position on the measure? Or Seymour’s?

  Will the person subject to the order have to ask at every single property he enters, every conveyance he boards as to whether there are firearms present?
  
  Not only that, it also potentially places an unreasonable burdon of discovery on a licenced Firearm owner as to whether anybody he encounters is subject to such an order lest they be party to the breach.

  The problems with this bill should be obvious to anyone with half a brain – especially to anyone with any legal training.
  
  GG is at least a trained lawyer unlike the rest of the polsci rabble that dream up this crap.
  
  So how far would this go?
  
  * Can an electrician with an FPO visit a house with guns in it? Probably not. That means tradies with FPOs must ask their customers if they have guns – not likely to go down well.
  * What if a gun owner lies to a person with a FPO and they get caught?
  * A person with an FPO wants to buy a house. Must they first find out if there are firearms in the house before they go to an open home?
  
  The problems with this are too numerous to make into an effective law.
  
  There are also no indications that the current laws are not enough. It is already up to firearm owners to ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands.

Winston’s claims of process were all rejected by ex top Civil Servant Sir Maarten Weavers. Maarten was back up by Hughes who acknowledged his breakdown of communications with WP since the leak. I get their point. However the result of doing what they claimed was the right thing saw the Privacy Laws broken. Their inference that Peter’s is partisan or protective (my word) could equally apply to them. It can be argued that privacy can be passed on in certain circumstances, but arguably the first consideration is that there must be no breach of that privacy – and there was. If a Government employee is going to pass on information that onus for the safety of that information is on them. There has been evidence that the press were informed across the board but neither Weavers or Hughes appears to have addressed that as the priority of concern that it is.
I know that Winston is much maligned here, but take an objective look at the principle – employees entrusted to keep privacy contributed to a breach which is not something they can wipe their hands of. What should arise from this is protocol around the way such information is handled to ensure it is not leaked – not arguments that the Minister needed to know (to tell her sister-in-law and family – tongue in cheek here somewhat). One thing is does show is what gasbags MPs can be and how defensive civil servants can be when they’ve contributed to a breach of the Law. Don’t know how this case will go now, but at least the issue has moved from not who the leaker was (though it’s not a good look – for the various MPs and their departments, to be unable to resolved the ‘mystery), to the issue of security of private information under the Act.

  Public figures, politicians especially give up the right to privacy when entering office. For no other reason than transparency. This is a particularly relevant situation unlike that of Meteria Turei. Turei was not in government. Winston may not have been at the time but is now and the transparency rules must apply to negate the possibility of partisan influence. This last point is important because Winston began the law suit immediately after becoming part of the government. It is nothing more than UTU on the part of Winston. Guidelines for “no surprises” must be adhered to regardless of privacy. For instance, would these same privacy rules apply to the minister in charge of social welfare if the same situation existed? I expect they would not.

  A few things here:
  1. The two top public servants sought legal advice from the Crown Solicitor and would have abided by that advice.
  2. The process is in the Cabinet Manual and no attempt had been made to change the convention by either main party (Helen Clark arguably used some ‘no surprises’ information to hit National with just before the 2002 election).
  3. Winston is dreaming up various non-existent ‘conventions’ to suit his case such that department heads should not provide ‘no surprises’ information within three months of an election.
  
  Peter Hughes gave an example where John Key was unaware that the Ministerial car fleet was being replaced until his chauffeur told him and John Key was the ‘responsible’ Minister as Minister in charge of Ministerial Services.
  
  There was another case (in UK) where ‘no surprises’ information was valid. Lester Piggot a top jockey who rode horses owned by the Queen and Queen Mother was retiring and was in line for a knighthood. The tax people let it be known to the appropriate authorities that he was being investigated for serious tax evasion. So instead of receiving a knighthood from Her Majesty, he was instead one of her guests for 6 months (but with no gold plated bathroom fittings).
  Think how messy it would have been if he received a knighthood then senior people having to agonise whether to advise Her Majesty to strip the knighthood off him.

He said

I have no doubt that Winston, in his ministerial hat, would dump on any department head who did not warn him about a situation which could cause him (Winston) embarrassment if it got into the public domain. This has been the expected position for decades – senior public servants are obligated (whether legally or morally doesn’t matter) to give their minister warning of, and an explanation of the circumstances surrounding, any event that would necessitate the minister or the government having to defend its/their actions to the public.

Stuff and Herald both have cut-n-paste articles about Springboks doping.

I would not be surprised. I know doping was rife in South Africa back in the 1980s/90s even at school level and it has probably got worse since then.

Aphiwe Dyantyi (who was bust earlier this year) and a few others in that squad do not have typical body shapes – especially a couple of the nguni guys who tend to struggle putting on large muscle mass.

New Zealand’s population blow-out over the last five years has put us at the top of population growth in developed countries.

I’ve criticised Massey’s Paul Spoonley in General Debate a few times over his multiculturism views, but he’s very interesting in a 14-minute radio interview at Radio NZ.

Our immigration has surged since 2013, with the inflow, in order of size, mainly from China, India, and Britain.

New Zealand has never had such migration growth before in its history, Spoonley says.

  The net gain was 54,623 migrants.
  
  This is more than triple current immigration rates to the United States and the United Kingdom.

      The Statistics Department web site is a dog’s breakfast. The search function is appalling.
      
      MCos’s link is to an information summary. It gives the net arrival and departure of immigrants, but without arrival figures for the UK. Presumably with many of the immigrants recorded in the figures as leaving slipped through the back door to Australia.
      
      Here are the gross arrival numbers (September 30 year) in that summary, with the UK figures missing:
      
      New Zealanders – 34,700
      China – 17,300
      India – 12,400
      South Africa – 10,500
      Australia – 9,400
      
      Paul Spoonley in his radio interview described the UK as being the source of the third highest number of Immigrants (he would have been ignoring the Statistics Dept inclusion of New Zealanders).

Three deaths have now been reported as possible outcomes from the switch to the new drug.

Jacinda Ardern, prime minister, lying again

* It is notoriously difficult to regulate international social media domestically. But according to the Prime Minister, it’s in train.

“What we’re looking for here is just consistency, moving into the modern era and that’s an area that [Internal Affairs] Minister Tracey Martin’s been working on,” Ardern said on Tuesday.

She said Martin has “been doing some thinking and some work”.

But it seems Minister Martin missed the memo.

“I’m not working in that space,” she said. “It’s still a conversation to be had we haven’t had that conversation yet… I’m not confident it’s actually 100 percent my area.”

That’s despite Ardern saying she is “content with the pace” that work is being done in that area. *
