Good morning everyone. We’re starting White Ribbon week with the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
For the religious among us, it’s also St Catherine’s Day. She had an interesting life. Excuse the lengthy quotation, but some of these old-time martyrs really are fascinating.

A vision of Saint Mary and Baby Jesus persuaded her to become a Christian. When the persecutions began under Maxentius, she went to the emperor and rebuked him for his cruelty. The emperor summoned 50 of the best pagan philosophers and orators to dispute with her, hoping that they would refute her pro-Christian arguments, but Catherine won the debate. Several of her adversaries, conquered by her eloquence, declared themselves Christians and were at once put to death.

Catherine was then scourged and imprisoned. She was scourged so cruelly and for so long that her whole body was covered with wounds, from which the blood flowed in streams. The spectators wept with pity, but Catherine stood with her eyes raised to heaven, without giving a sign of suffering or fear. Maxentius ordered her to be imprisoned without food, so she would starve to death. During the confinement, angels tended her wounds with salve. Catherine was fed daily by a dove from Heaven and Christ also visited her, encouraging her to fight bravely, and promised her the crown of everlasting glory.
During her imprisonment, over 200 people came to see her, including Maxentius’ wife, Valeria Maximilla; all converted to Christianity and were subsequently martyred. Twelve days later, when the dungeon was opened, a bright light and fragrant perfume filled it, and Catherine came forth even more radiant and beautiful.
Upon the failure of Maxentius to make Catherine yield by way of torture, he tried to win the beautiful and wise princess over by proposing marriage. The saint refused, declaring that her spouse was Jesus Christ, to whom she had consecrated her virginity.
The furious emperor condemned Catherine to death on a spiked breaking wheel, but, at her touch, it shattered. Maxentius ordered her to be beheaded. Catherine herself ordered the execution to commence. A milk-like substance rather than blood flowed from her neck.
Angels transported her body to the highest mountain next to Mount Sinai. In 850, her incorrupt body was discovered by monks from the Sinai Monastery. The monks found on the surface of the granite on which her body lay an impression of the form of her body. Her hair still growing, and a constant stream of the most heavenly fragranced healing oil issuing from her body. This oil produced countless miracles.

Megan Woods plan to remove all prompt payment power discounts, but those prompt payers won’t pay more.

So power companies get estimated $45million less income, nobody pays more and some pay less. How does that work?

My suggestion is that the difference is deducted from the government’s dividend, or tax credit if the government is not a part owner. Government puts its money where its mouth is.

  This is completely opposite to regulatory policy for credit cards. Credit card companies used to require that merchants accepting their cards did not offer a discount for cash or a fee for using a credit card. A Australian regulators stomped on this some years back and NZ followed suit.

    I knew of one shop when they started the use of credit cards that went around and increased everything by 5%. So you were paying above the odds by using cash as it was incerased by 5%.

    And some people will not pay their power bill until the disconnect guy turns up. Local power company used to charge $5 extra if the consumer fronted up the cash to the disconnect guy.
    Power companies might find a way around it. Some air points or flybuys if you pay on time perhaps.

  She clearly does not understand basic economics. In economics they teach ‘The law of diminishing marginal returns’, and ‘the scarcity principle’. Hunger and food, in particular pies, are often used as an example.
  
  I suspect that if Megan did economics, it is highly likely the she mis-interpreted the theories of ‘The law of diminishing marginal returns’, and ‘the scarcity principle’. She probably only heard the bit about the pies.

  Interesting times when Stuff invents a new poll, not based on traditional random calling, but instead a pre-selected panel.
  It could have some relevance when compared to a previous poll of the same panel, but at the moment it appears they simply got their panel selection wrong.
  Still, Stuff doesn’t need a second chance to trumpet “Nats fall under 40%”, ” Coalition partners safe”, “Ardern loved by all” etc etc.

  The poll took in the Labour-Greens’ triumph of achieving unanimous support for their Zero Carbon Bill which of course included National’s abject capitulation. Many regarded National’s action as a betrayal of the rural sector. It would be interesting to know the “undecided” percentage which seldom seems to be reported these days. Yougov polls have a mixed reputation for accuracy in the UK, although in 2017 they ran two polling systems including one that did not rely on the panel methodology which proved to be right on the money. There is a clear message for National regardless: don’t try to be more Left than the coalition and change the Leader before it’s too late.

So Stuff has a poll out that is catastrophic for the future of New Zealand, if accurate. I may have missed previous polls, but how long has Stuff had polling and do they have a consistent record of accuracy?

I guess there’s no reason to assume it’s wildly inaccurate which means those polled have no level of incompetence and corruption they won’t put up with.

Labour must be getting desperate and getting Stuff to run an alternative political poll that shows some dubious results – Given the performance of the government over the last months the poll outcomes are laughable. Looks a bit like a ‘push poll’ to manipulate public thinking, but as the outcomes of this governments shambles starts to affect joe- public tax payer; no amount of BS is going to change the thinking publics view.

  Quite so Tricati. Instead of the traditional methodology of polls, this one operates from a web panel. Quite how they put together said web panel would be interesting to know, as it is likely to represent established political leanings rather than being a random selection of potential voters. It reminds me of the former Horizon poll, which was hopelessly out of step with other polls.
  
  Let’s wait until the next round of Reid Research and Colmar Brunton polls, then assess the lie of the land.

Yesterday there was a post from one person who supports the state-sanctioned taking of human life praising the speech of another person who supports the state-sanctioned taking of human life who in turn is an enthusiast for the same state-sanctioned taking of human life.

I’d be interested to see whether any one of these three would support the state-sanctioned taking of the life of the murderer of Grace Millane, and would be equally interested to hear why they believe that the state should sanction the taking of the lives of some but not the lives of others such as vicious, murdering criminals.

  Nukuleka – I do wonder about the mentality of people who are quite comfortable with euthanasia for the elderly but think that capital punishment for murderers is barbarous?
  
  If you support that it’s okay to administer a lethal injection to a terminally ill person who has signed their permission then okay – surely it is not barbarous to administer a lethal injection to a person who is guilty of wilfully murdering another person?

      Whether its mercy killing or not, there are people who think that some innocent people can forfeit their right to life, but people who are guilty of the most gravely wrong of acts can’t.
      
      It simply makes no coherent sense. It’s completely backwards. It’s what happens when we fetishize rights and then forget why we have them.

        While I support euthanasia to some degree, it is very simple to prepare an end of life plan. Everyone should have one as it is unfair on family to make the decision if they need to do so and you should do it yourself. I have one registered at my GP surgery and my next of kin has a copy signed by both myself and my GP in their safe. I have told my other children what my wishes are. I think it covers most scenario that can happen and I don’t regret any of my choices.

Chloe Whatshername from the Greens saying that farmers need to be retrained for other careers. I suspect that she would like to see the state run farms so that environmental and other issues can be addressed by government bureaucrats who know so much better than pesky rural peons. Perhaps they could call it Collectivization of the Countryside or something.

  I wasn’t going to comment but reading that a politician in government is suggesting “Farmers should be retrained for other careers.” Sent a cold shiver down my spine.
  I’m just reading about forced collectivisation and early years of state run farms and it’s is horror. Starvation, imprisonment of anyone actually good at farming, hopelessness and abject poverty.
  Fuck me. In NZ a politician wants to decided who farms and who dies not.
  When are people going to fight back? NZ is so naive, so blissfully unaware of world history.

A High Court Judge called Julian Knowles in London last week made a far reaching comment for Andrew “Hug a Thug” Little and whoever who wants to go down the road attacking “Free Speech’.
“The Right to be Offended Does Not Exist”. Comments reported by a so called victim,must always be recorded. Go figure that type of comment by a Learned Judge. All those who are fanatical in destroying “Free Speech” Comments.

However CG tax is really a red herring as returns from this tax is often only marginal. What Labour and the Greens are really after is the ‘Boomer’ money.

Interesting to hear the Greenpeace trespassers in Timaru have the ‘full support’ of the NZ Police, on Radio NZ this morning.
I guess that ties with the other law and order trends under the Coalition.
NZ First have been well neutered by the Greens and Labour – they have lost any leverage they once had and have no option but to toe the line. If they break ranks now they know they have no chance in a snap election.

Fifth day of the Test, and England are hoping to salvage a draw.

At the end of day 3 the New Zealand media had all but awarded them the match. The situation was that England had scored 353 and the Black Caps were on something like 144 for 4. Now for sure, that wasn’t a great position for NZ, but it is nothing close to England being in “complete control” or the “total dominance” that the media were reporting.

Even today, Stuff’s main headline is not about how the Black Caps have a very fair shot at victory. It’s about how a former England captain thinks that the match will be drawn.

This isn’t balance, and it’s not objective. It’s actively and deliberately belittling and disrespectful to our own team. Why do they do it?

  What a day Mitchell Santner had yesterday. If he can pick up two more wickets today, he will join Bruce Taylor as the only New Zealanders to score a century and take five wickets in a test match.
  
  And what a player BJ Watling has become. As tough as nails, fantastic ability to concentrate for long periods and he can probably now be ranked as our best-ever test wicketkeeper. With eight test centuries now, he is only one behind Stephen Fleming.

    It would be good to see Santner succeed today. His test bowling record has been very modest, usually gets about one wicket for 40-50 runs per innings, and never had a five-wicket bag.
    Fingers crossed.
    I’d expect Wagner to be a bit tricky to handle today too, with some cracks and variable bounce.
    But if Santner’s looking good, maybe the captain should bowl a decent number of overs himself.

        I don’t think I’ve ever seen an LBW as plumb as Broad’s one that ended the match; hit full pitch in front of middle and leg, with the ball cannoning in to the bottom of middle stump!
        
        On the basis of the performances of the New Zealand side at test level in the last few seasons, I think it’s fair to declare them our best test team ever. That there is competition for places is a real bonus.

For the entirety of human civilisation nobody has ever done well financially cleaning other people’s toilets for wages.

Why is this? Primarily it is because nearly anyone can clean toilets, it’s easy work and hardly any skills are necessary.

Left to purely the supply of potential toilet cleaners and the demand for toilet cleaners, toilet cleaning will forever remain a menial, low-skilled, low-paid occupation that people should endeavour to do for a while to build up behavioural skills and funds before moving on to better and brighter things.

Anyone telling people that toilet cleaning, for decades, will position you well for your retirement is either delusional and in need of hospitalisation or a Labour or union official.

  These articles with real life examples never state the state transfers being received by the workers. Anyone on minimum wage with two kids will be receiving $276 per week just in WFF and in work tax credits. Which is significant. I think they would also be eligible for an accommodation supplement. It is the tale of a German owner of Tesla, who crashed his car in Austria three months ago.

In 2008, the whole country knew who Clayton Weatherston was, and it would be fair to say that his crime was equally heinous.

So it makes me wonder what it is that needs to be hidden in this case

What’s going on in the meat industry, that it can’t find local workers? Or is nearly everyone frightened to get animal blood on their hands?

In addition to Muslim workers for halal product, the meat industry is looking to bring in hundreds, perhaps thousands, of workers.

Meat worker used to be a high paying job, and among other things, helped thousands of young New Zealanders finance their way through university.

Some NZ slaughtermen work in Iceland and northern Europe in the NZ off-season. Apparently the New Zealanders do the throat cutting, the top of the tree in meat work. Workers from other countries do other processing.

This is one of the big industries still labour-intense, and everywhere in the developed world, finding good workers is a problem.

Scott Technology of Dunedin, which leads internationally in developing robots for meat processing, is now controlled by the Brazilian company that is the world’s biggest meat producing firm.

The problem is the non-standard size of objects the robots work with. Robots developed and being developed use artificial vision including X-rays and time-of-flight range finding.

I guess it’s a race between the robots and “manufactured” meat some people believe will replace that of slaughtered animals.

  First of all even if he did do all those things, is it an impeachable offence? I actually don’t think it is. I think the Democrats have got away investigating their political rivals in the 2016 election absolutely scot-free. So using the Democrats standard it’s a perfectly legal thing to do that the mainstream media will never report on and if they do it’s perfectly fine.
  
  The fact is that the aid was withheld while there was numerous meetings by American officials with Ukrainian officials to determine that the aid would be used properly rather than for corrupt purposes. Once it was determined that the Ukrainian government was on the up and up then the aid was released.
  
  And when there is a Senate trial then the Republican senators will have a chance to call Joe Biden and Hunter Biden to the witness stand. And we will find out that Donald J Trump had plenty of reason to investigate corruption. Because there was corruption.
  
  No one believes that Hunter Biden got a seat on the board of the Ukrainian energy company because of merit. He was on the board because his father was the vice president of the United States in charge of providing aid to the Ukraine. Everyone knows that is wrong and corrupt!     One of these things is not like the other.
    The Russian interference in the 2016 election was investigated by the FBI and a special counsel – leading to comprehensive documentation of the interference and resulting in crimnial indictments.
    By contrast, Trump’s fantasies about Biden, or the ‘missing server’ in Ukraine, have never been referred to any competent agency for investigation, let alone resulted in any prosecution. In fact, as has been shown in the impeachment hearings, Trump wasn’t even interested in the Ukrainians investigating anything – all he and his confederates wanted was an announcement of an investigation.

      Sounds odd huh, getting a firm started by a corrupt Ukrainian oligarch with Russian connections to check on Russian hacking.
      Personally I think it’s more Trump wanting the Server to check how deep the DNC was in paying for and arranging the discredited Steele Dossier- which really was an attempt to hurt a political opponent.
      Access was probably denied more to stop other info being discovered as well.

When Grace Millane’s killer first appeared in the Auckland District Court, Judge Evangelos Thomas declined granting interim name suppression. However, the defendant’s lawyer Ian Brookie indicated an appeal, which automatically imposed a 20 working day suppression order under New Zealand law. Because of the closure of courts over Christmas and New Year the name suppression hearing wasn’t heard until February 7, 2019

Then instead of appealing the Judge Thomas decision, “Brookie made a fresh application for name suppression on the basis of fair trial grounds as a result of events between his client’s first appearance and transfer to the High Court”.
Those “events” seemed to include UK media breaches of suppression – in its papers, online and on-air – and Andrew Little and Ardern remonstrating those breaches, both here and internationally.

… the Justice Minister said British media were undermining the judicial process by publishing suppressed details of the man. Andrew Little said the overseas media’s actions were “hurtful” towards the Millane family when the defence counsel was looking for every opportunity to force a mistrial.
Little mentioned “unfair trial” and then defendant lawyer Ian Brookie did too.
A coincidence?

But Peter Williams, this morning Magic Talk Radio, insists there are very sound reasons for the name suppression which will find out in due course, be patient.
Can Andrew Little confirm that – apart from his own vague comments about “fair trial”?

  In the meantime, he’s urging people not to go spreading the killer’s name on social media, as he still has name suppression.

If that is the case it is a good thing to have name suppression so as to not unduly influence the jury. How prophetic is Electoral law?
It is an offence not to enrol if you are qualified to do so. People who are convicted of the offence, face a fine of up to $100 for a first conviction, and up to $200 for a further conviction.

Ive just been listening to Peter Williams on Magic Talk where he’s been discussing the necessity of the MSM’s somewhat sordid and detailed reporting of the Grace Millane case.
From the tone of those calling in, it sounds like my partner was probably the only person in the country who actually derived any degree of pleasure from reading it.

My prediction is that between now and the election the press will run a concerted strategy to resurrect Saint Jacinda of the ChipVats increasingly the polls will “reflect” her popularity- increasingly articles mutely undermining Bridges will be penned. “One more Term!” Will be the call. “We’ve Come so Far!” Etc.
The pictures will show Rainbow Jacinda Defender of the Oppressed Jacinda Diverse Jacinda surrounded by adulation wearing a Lei.
Then, despite the press predictions about the “Mother of the Nation” she will booted out of office.

One for David Garrett …

Noble Frankland has died at 97. Frankland won a DFC as a navigator in Bomber Command, and later incurred the wrath of Bomber Command fans when researching in Germany the effects of the Allied bombing.

He concluded that, for most of the war, the results of the bombing offensive, though hugely costly both in terms of aircrew casualties and the deaths of German civilians, were very disappointing.

Frankland wrote in the multi-volume The Strategic Air Offensive against Germany 1939-1945 on the effects of the Allied bombing:

… “the German records … left no doubt that the national effect on the German war effort as a whole was virtually nil.”

The Telegraph in an obituary behind its pay wall says: “ … things had changed for the better from May 1944, with the military demand that Bomber Command be involved in preparing the way for the Normandy landings; more crucially, a revolution in American air strategy, strongly resisted by Air Marshals Portal and Harris, determined that the battle could only be won if the bombers were used to force the German fighters into action, with the aim of destroying the Luftwaffe in the air.”

The vital factor, Frankland argued, was the introduction by the Americans of the Mustang fighter: “This formidable machine scored immediate and spectacular successes. For the Luftwaffe it was the beginning of the end.”

Frankland did great work at the Imperial War Museum in London. The Telegraph says he established the old RAF fighter airfield at Duxford, Cambridgeshire, as the museum’s first branch; and saved the Second World War battle cruiser Belfast, which is moored in the Thames near Tower Bridge.

  I think that with few doubts, the bombing campaign reduced the German industrial capacity, often in small but important ways. Mass bombing often destroyed the buildings but often not the equipment, but it did render the equipment unusable for a period.
  
  Just as an example, the Panther tank was fairly formidable, but was seriously unreliable with the transmission being a prime cause of breakdowns. As originally designed, the Panther was to use the same gearbox/final drive as the Tiger II, which was in fact a sturdy and reliable unit. However due to a lack of machining capacity to make the umbers required, a simpler spur gear arrangement was used, and under load this had a distinct tendency to fail. This not only meant that something over half of all Panthers were lost due to mechanical problems, but that it was less nimble than intended as neutral turns (left and right tracks moving in opposite directions) were effectively impossible because of the strain it imposed.
  
  The shortage of machining time was a direct result of the bombing of industrial plants and the disruption that caused. Although many of the tools were redeployed, it became very difficult to place them in a location where they wouldn’t be further bombed.
  
  That said, I would agree with much of Frankland’s critique of the impacts of bombing, the strategic bombing campaign was far less effective than claimed by its proponents.
  
  It was effective on the brief occasions it was used tactically, especially in the Normandy campaign. For example before the US led breakout and in the British Goodwood offensive. These were rare uses as the strategic air bombing people prevented such uses when they could.

  In terms of pre-war expectations, the strategic bombing offensive was a failure and certainly very costly in both money and lives of the Allied officer class.
  
  However, one wonders if Franklin’s bleak conclusions are justified. What would have happened if Britain and later the US had not mounted a sustained aerial assault on Germany? The Luftwaffe would have been freed for operations in the East, as would have been vast numbers of high velocity gun tubes; people and money would have been freed up for war production.
  
  And, until the Allies landed on the continent with control of the air, made possible by Luftwaffe losses in defence of the fatherland, what would those airmen have been doing?
  
  In 1944, precision bombing devastated Germany’s transport and oil supplies, but this campaign was made possible by the P-51 coming on top of the painful and costly learning from the previous years’ campaign.
  
  And a disagreement with Ed. My understanding, from limited knowledge of that campaign, is that heavy bombers actually had little effect in advancing the Allies in Normandy; what really made the difference was specific training, led by the US and partly copied by the British, of units for close infantry, tank and artillery cooperation in the bocage country.

Well from what I’ve seen I’d have to say yes.

I’ve only even known one Springbok personally, back in the 1980s. I don’t think he was doping, but I do know it was an issue at the time at the elite schoolboy level.

Looking at the squad that won the world cup, I’d expect there was some doping, especially among some of the nguni players. Ngunis tend to not pack on huge muscle mass.

Kolisi’s physique is normal, but some of those other guys that look like weightlifters – nope, sorry, I don’t believe it.

    You might remember mentioning this bloke called Darwin over the weekend that explained evolution and how different populations have different traits.
    
    Is it a “racial stereotype” to say that pygmies are generally much shorter than Europeans? If the pygmy basketball team turned up with seven foot tall players then people are going to say something looks a bit off, no matter what they’ve been eating.
    
    Two of the weightlifter-shaped nguni players were kicked out of the springboks for doping and the two that were remaining just look off form.
    
    Now it is possible that they are just innocent freaks of nature, but I suspect there’s some enhancement going on with those two guys in particular, but quite possibly with others too.

* Six of 19 protesters have been removed by police from the offshore supply vessel Skandi Atlantic in Timaru’s port where they have been since Sunday morning.

A Stuff reporter at the scene said the five, three men and three women, were driven away in two vehicles – one a police car and the other an unmarked vehicle, about 2.10pm on Monday.

The women could be seen making peace signs to supporters as they were driven away.*

Was the unmarked vehicle used to transport the non-binary protester ?
I can’t wait to see how the remaining 11 protesters are described. One of each I presume.

They are both Social Democrats fighting for the same electoral middle ground.

The reason the coalition is doing well comes down to Jacinda Ardern, it is no different to when J Key was PM.

Both leaders carry the parties on their backs.

  On policy I think you are more or less correct. Print a list of National and Labour policies side by side and few could figure out the difference.
  
  However there’s also another factor: ability. Nat MPs generally have that and Labour generally do not.
  
  Then there’s also emotion: PriNZess is good at playing that one and National are not.
  
  While National try to go head-to-head with Labour in emotional space they will lose.

Maybe you just gave up.

Maybe it was just your time, but chances are . . . it wasn’t.

So I pick up your faded picture of your driver’s license and click on my iPhone, flip to Facebook and search your name. Chances are we’ll have one mutual friend somewhere. I know a lot of people.
I see you wearing the same necklace and earrings that now sit in a specimen cup on the counter, the same ball cap or jacket that has been split open with trauma scissors and pulled under the backboard, the lining stained with blood. Looks like you were wearing it to the U2 concert. I heard it was great.
I see your smile, how it should be, the color of eyes when they are filled with life, your time on the beach, blowing out candles, Christmas at Grandma’s; oh you have a Maltese, too. I see that. I see you standing with your mom and dad in front of the sign to your college. Good, I’ll know exactly who they are when I walk into the room. It makes it that much easier for me, one less question I need to ask.
You’re kind of lucky that you don’t have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if she’s trying to protect herself from unseen blows.

I check your Facebook page before I tell them you’re dead because it reminds me that I am talking about a person, someone they love; it quiets the voice in my head that is screaming at you right now shouting: “How could you do this to them, to people you are supposed to love!”*

I asked them if they supported P.A.P.A.’s manifesto and they dissapeared. No response. NADA. They up and vanished like a fart in the wind.

A certain Green Party member has been retweeting P.A.P.A.s Twitter posts as of late. Of course there may well be no connection to the PBJ83 moniker, but it is most illuminating that a particularly vocal Green Party member is proudly associating themselves with P.A.P.A.

They don’t believe in prison for anyone – even child sex abusers.

Their solution is to hold restorative justice meetings instead.

Imagine! A poor child has been abused by an advocate of “inter-generational love”, and then they are expected to have a meeting with their abuser

Mere words cannot describe the terpitude of these people.
