And theBFD ex Whaleoil continues commenting on Botany National’s candid selection. The theme is stinging criticism of Chris Luxon (ex Air NZ chief and contender), of the electorate chair and party heirarchy, but solid support of Jami Lee-Ross. The items are fronted by ‘SB’ (Cam’s wife) but are made up of information from the usual shady sources. It paints a very grim picture for National, but when the nonsense is stripped away, there is nothing really out of the ordinary.
An unknown number of contenders threw their hats in the ring (the identities of the unsuccessful ones remain confidential as is usual practice) and five (the maximum allowable number) were pre-selected. They include Chris Luxon and sitting list MP Agnes Loheni and all five reside outside the electroate.
The selection process is continuing with three ‘meet the candidate’ meetings and the final selection meeting (I cannot find the dates for these). The Electorate Chair has banned ‘outsiders’ from the ‘meet the candidates’ meetings which would be his right. His main concern is no doubt to allow the selection delegates to get on with it without distraction – with five contenders, time is at a real premium.
Assuming the heirarchy does want to ‘parachute’ Chris in, they are under no illusion that they have to convince the delegates he is the right choice. Voting is by a STV type system, so issues of vote splitting do not arise.

  The Electorate Chair is completely correct in banning the public from meet the candidate meetings. They are meetings for paid-up Botany National Party members, and will include voting delegates for the candidate selection. They are most definitely NOT intended for the public, or even worse, for the media.
  
  Doubtless BFD will paint this as some form of Vast-Simon-Bridges-Led-Conspiracy, when in fact it is normal National Party procedure.

    I’m getting a bit sick of the anti-Bridges stuff going on over there. I’m fine with critiques of policy – it feels like they are releasing ideas to get feedback – but the complete hatred of the leader of the National party helps no one.

  TheBFD also thinks Jami will poll very well and could upset the applecart. In reality he seems to be whistling in the wind. In 2017 Nats got 21k votes, Labour 8.5k and Maori and Greens together 3.2k. NZF did not put up a candidate but got 1.6k party vote. On these figures there seems little risk that Jami would split the centre-right vote that would allow Labour to sneak in. There ore other possible interactions with minor candidates winning or losing votes but this is unlikely to be significant. So it would become a two-horse race between Jami and the National candidate and there would need to be a near revolution among centre-right voters to let Jami win.
  Jami should stop wasting his time and energy on standing for Botany (what Cam would call ‘hugging a corpse’) and start looking for a real job while he still has some temporary income.

  Those articles are so obviously by Cam Slater with the possible injections of Simon Lusk. The BFD continues the amoral approach to blogging pioneered and perfected at Whale Oil.
  Who remembers the Lupo olive oil hit jobs? Those were pathetically transparent and vile in approach. Every time the competing olive oil company was mentioned, there was a link to personal lubricant.

    Cam is having to keep his head down but still wants his say. In July Justice Matthew Palmer ruled that Cam had to provide particular discovery and submit to oral examination in the defamation case brought by the three health professionals. Cam’s lawyer tried to resist this on mental health grounds. While Cam and ‘Whaleoil’ are now ‘dead’ targets, the three are still going after Carrick Graham (Doug Graham’s son), his media company (I think for paid placements on Whaleoil), ex Nat Katherine Rich and her NZ Food and Grocery Council. The three need whatever evidence that can be wrung out of Cam to support their case. So if Cam puts his head above the parapet, the Judge would have reason to doubt the mental health claims.
    No further news of that case since Palmer J’s #8 judgment.

  The labour hugging media have always had a problem with National being more democaratic.
  By having its candidates selected by local members. Sure the party has a view if there are more than five candidates. Which is designed to filter out the dreamers.
  Where as labour candidates are appointed by the central committee . The only local involvement is to set up some pretence selection meeting and make a cup of tea.
  As for NZF it is just a matter of crawling up their dubious leader.

Apparently – The Migrant Workers Association is promising “something big” is coming if Cabinet Minister Shane Jones doesn’t resign.

Jones, a New Zealand First MP, said immigrants could “catch the next flight home” if they don’t like the new rules. “You have no legitimate expectations in my view to bring your whole village to New Zealand.” [Migrant Workers Association spokesperson Sher] Singh says the comments make Jones unfit to be a minister.

Perhaps the new Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon can confirm if Cabinet Minister Shane Jones’ remark “catch the next flight home”, is “racist” or not.

And is Mandeep Singh Bela, Indian Worker’s Association, indulging in “hate speech” when he is widely reported as saying, “‘To take next flight home’ is quite racist and discriminatory towards the Indian community; the last thing we want to see is what happened in Christchurch”, since that eventually seems out of context in this matter (and since too, at this stage, the Commission of Inquiry, a trial still pending, and the outlawing of the related manifesto so far negates an understanding of that event)

There is also the issue of who is – Winston Peters or Jacinda Ardern, according to the Cabinet Manual (one assumes) – responsible for any remanding of Shane Jones should Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon confirm his comments to be “racist”.

In fact it would be interesting to know what the consequences are, if any, should the Jones remarks are deemed “racist”.

  In NZ we have tests to ensure relationships are genuine.
  
  Without these tests our immigration system will be rorted much more frequently than it already is.
  
  I notice too that a good proportion of scam marriages to gain residency are performed by Indians as well as a number of instances of ‘dowry for residency’ scams too (marriages are arranged, the bride arrives, her dowry of tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars is taken from her by the husband’s family, and then the bride is unceremoniously dumped to fend for herself).

      Tks Cut n Paster but I didn’t mention the Maori thing because there are NO Maories in NZ (true ones that is). There are those who choose to identify as such for a variety of reasons, mostly financial. Likewise, Te Reo is not the Maori language. Te Reo has a smattering of the original Maori language but the remainder consists of manufactured words. This was also done for various reasons.
      How come someone born as a part Maori, doesn’t speak Te Reo or Maori has adopted a new age Maori accent?

And, if I, as a taxpayer, are liable, I wish to know if anyone is aware of any “personal detail” that was released by media, beyond the information that Winston Peters did himself volunteer to reporters.

In fact, was not each detail given voluntarily by Winston Peters to media, redefined by his own actions to be “public details”?

I also wish to know of any damage to Winston’s reputation that was not self-inflicted or self-confirmed by his own actions.

And without asking each voter who took part in the last Election, how can they establish the claim or statement that “the details leaking to media hurt his reputation and election chances.”? After-all, Winston won his announced Election goal of negotiating the members to form the current coalition.

  I’m a little surprised it was worth taking the 757 to Bangkok. There are lots of commercial flights. Plus it needs to stop in Darwin to refuel. Maybe if there is a large contingent it is cost effective compared to Business Class airfares.
  
  IIRC John Key seemed to generally take commercial flights unless it was impractical, eg multi stop trips around the Pacific.

  A genuine question would be to ask whether or not A&E had navels, but that isn’t (I don’t think) ever stated in our only possible source, so we simply don’t know. Doesn’t stop it being argued over though…I believe that it has been debated ad nauseam since the bible itself was extant.

      Except that there never has been any kind of “missing link” found, or indeed transitional forms that show one species evolving into another species (eg, half-fish/half-reptile creatures) . In fact, fossil records show that most lifeforms came into being all at once, fully formed, in what scientists called the Cambrian Explosion. Dawkins explanation is rather a flight of fancy.

        You little list doesn’t prove that the animal concerned is halfway between one species and another. Scientists have been trying to find the “missing link” for decades. If it existed there should be fossil evidence all over the place. Hundreds of examples. Yet we don’t find them. The same for other animals.

  Earlier this year, I took the time to read the Mahon report on the Erebus crash which can be accessed at http://www.erebus.co.nz (Paper copies are quite difficult to track down.)
  
  The report was a real page turner – at times it read more like a mystery thriller novel than a dry Commission of Inquiry report. I was aware that the report exonerated the flight crew of any blame but before I read the report I must admit I was a little sceptical – two pilots deliberately flying a passenger jet aircraft into a mountain side? Surely they must have done something wrong.
  
  But having read Mahon’s report I will admit that I am totally in his camp. He systematically destroys all allegations of pilot error and I also cannot help but wonder what happened to all of those documents which were apparently “lost” at the crash site. Like Mahon, I also think there are some key aces still lying in the pack.

  My husband was quite involved in the ‘de-briefing’ of the rescuers, and it’s fair to say he was affected by the harrowing reports that emerged. He compared it with soldiers who couldn’t talk about their war experience.
  Back then, people didn’t reveal their distress in the same way they do today and the media was more respectful of their privacy.
  IMO Saturday’s interview had moments of outraged ‘right to know and tell everyone’ .

Insurance companies “DDD” – Delay, Deny, Defend.

When you file a claim the first response is no response – for a long while (Delay), then the inevitable “Sorry we found a clause that allows us to not pay” – (Deny). Then in order to get any justice you have to hire a lawyer and fight their expensive lawyers (Defend).

In some countries, if an insurance company unfairly denies payment and you are successful in fighting them, the insurance company has to pay out four time the disputed amount.

That evens up the odds a little bit, but only a little.

We had travel insurance payout declined because we didn’t “take reasonable care” not to lose $1500 due to unforseen circumstances. I guess if you trip on a curb and break your leg in a foreign country on your way to the airport you didn’t “take resonable care” in not breaking your leg.

  a) Lost Video Camera
  b) Surgery on a foot infection.
  Neither posed any problems.
  The Surgery claim got delayed because of Christmas. I got a letter of apology for the delay and an offer of a discount for any future policy(which I took up the following year)

I attended my teenage son’s prizegiving at a large Christchurch secondary school on Friday. The students and their guests were almost entirely of European extraction, with a smattering of Asians. After a brief welcome from the student leaders, the principal stood at the lectern, a cocksure little white man in an enormous Maori cloak, and proceeded to harangue the audience in Maori at great length.

I had time to wonder at what drives this. You can be sure, looking at the demographic, that of the several hundred people in the auditorium the number who might have understood anything at all of what he was saying would have been been somewhere between zero and the fingers of one hand.

So what gives? Why stand before an audience and subject them to several minutes of unintelligible babble? The only explanation I can come up with is wankery, sheer wankery. It’s nothing more than showing off.

    Moved out after Quake settled house to Selwyn, area pleasanter and council slightly less wasteful & obnoxious. Half of family done likewise and the rest actively looking. I hardly recognize the shity centre and no longer frequent it as suburban malls/restaurants and cinemas satisfy our needs without the hassel of 30 kph speed limits, one ways, no rights turns and traffic nazis. The report’s about the Westpac boss’s total income for the year.

“Pockets”? My old Shorter Oxford Dictionary acknowledges this verb can mean to put in a pocket, but has a secondary meaning: “To appropriate, sometimes with implication of dishonesty”. It dates this meaning from 1637.

The (1979) Collins dictionary gives a secondary meaning of “pocket” as a verb: “to take surreptitiously or unlawfully; steal.”

Then (1983) Chambers, secondary meanings: “to appropriate: to take stealthily: to steal”.

Not that $2.5 million isn’t a lot of dosh for running a New Zealand company. Talent is widespread, as recovery from disasters and wars repeatedly proves, but management recruiters set the standards. The higher the salary, the less outrageous consultant-recruiter fees seem.

Australian travellers returning from overseas barely raise an eyebrow when approached by a sniffer dog at one of our baggage carousels. Many even smile — after all, dogs are cute!

But as ubiquitous as they’ve become, for some travellers the canines are a source of trepidation — and I’m not talking about drug traffickers.

For some Muslims, anxiety upon arrival in Australia derives less from a concern about encountering local authorities and more from a deep-seated fear of dogs. Followers of the Shafi’i school of jurisprudence in Sunni Islam, mainly found in East Africa and South-East Asia, are taught that dogs are unclean and impure. If they touch a dog they must wash the area of contact seven times — the first time with dirt and the remaining six times with water.

So you can now remain on the learners license for up to 7 years. Jezz. Certainly doesn’t make me feel safer on the roads to know that some of these people were too useless to move on to restricted.

* Drivers with a learner or restricted licence close to expiry will be given an automatic two-year extension by the Government.

On Monday, Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter announced that motorists holding a current five-year learner, restricted or motorbike licence expiring between December 1, 2019 and December 1, 2021 will receive the extension.

Over 144,000 time-limited licences are due to expire within the next two years, with 67,000 due to expire in the 12 months from December 1, 2019 and a further 77,000 the following year. *
