Hope those of you (including myself) realised yesterday 15/1 was GST/Provisional Tax. It really gives me the shits to think where it goes. Suppose the pubs, dope sellers, pokies, takeaways and bottle stores will see the majority of it, along with those too tired to work, but capable of breeding copious quantities of illegitimate kids to subsidise the unemployment benefit.

  So how much do “those people” actually cost us.
  
  I mean, “only” 33% goes to social services & welfare right?
  But we also find “those people” also don’t look after themselves and disproportionately use health services (21%). They also are the biggest shit-stirrers in school and disproportionately use/waste education budget (16%).
  
  Then, of course, police, courts (5%) and corrections (???) are almost entirely costs due to “those people”.

    Health is 17.9% & education is 11.4%

      I used numbers from the 30 June 2019 update – actual expenditure which is more accurate than the budget.
      
      Social security and welfare: 33%. Education 16%, Health 21%, Law and order 5%.
      
      Yes you are correct in that not all social is welfare, but once welfare recipients hit 65 they move to retirement benefit even though it is really welfare since they never contributed.

Man-made warming is a theory, not a “revealed truth”. Yet under the Ministry of Education’s new climate change syllabus teachers are instructed to ostracize children who question it. New Zealand becomes more totalitarian every day. Now children are to be punished for expressing skepticism, yet skepticism is the basis of the scientific method. Skepticism was the engine of the Enlightenment which has enriched our lives immeasurably.

Children are also to be turned into rabid little activists through role playing in class under teacher supervision. They are to be taught in particular how to deal to “deniers”. Antifa anyone?

Sadly on Facebook National’s spokesperson, Nikki Kaye, endorses the new syllabus, with a few tweaks, thus proving National once again is simply-Labour-lite, as we already knew . Only David Seymour has the gumption to expose the whole rotten brainwashing exercise for what it is. Shame on this government and especially the lunatic Greens who are behind the project.

This must not stand.

    seating plan, offer choices for ways to proceed, or share authority by delegating a student
    co-leader for different topics.” So if a child is “obstructive” by asking awkward but highly relevant questions (“depending on your understanding of them”) you can banish them to the back of the room where they won’t be seen or heard, or put them under the “authority” of a pupil enforcer.   What an hysterical post in response to a public health issue. New Zealanders in general should reduce their animal protein consumption. It is totally unnatural. Cows’ milk for little cows, human milk for little humans is a good place to start. New Zealanders could cold turkey on animal protein without the slightest effect on exports or GDP.

        We have to consider that in our largely sedentary lives when everything is on tap 24/7, we have too much of a good thing available to us.
        
        People, and carnivores and omnivores, have always consumed milk “products”, but not straight milk from bottles etc.
        
        Watch a cat consuming a baby bunny. It is drawn to eating the bunny guts full of curdled milk. Same to Kalahari Bushmen and other people who are not squeamish about guts. The curdled milk from a fawn’s guts is a delicacy.
        
        We, and our ape cousins have been eating meat “forever”.
        
        The Koi San (Kalahari Bushmen) are arguably the remnants of the oldest human groups going back 120,000 years or more. They eat meat and, as previously mentioned, milk, but they eat other things too.
        
        There is no Khoi San word for soy.
        
        There are distinctions between “natural meat” and modern sanitised meat. Mainly:
        1) Naturally we’d eat more of the animal and not just muscle and fat. We’d eat more brains, intestines and offal.
        2) Most of the year we’d eat leaner meats and only get the fat when the animals were naturally fat – before winter.
        
        But a veg only diet??? Very un-natural. It is possible; the rest of my family are vegetarians and healthy, but it certainly isn’t “natural” and what we were designed to do.

        I suppose we could evolve to eat just about anything.
        But as the supposedly most intelligent species, surely we should take into account the ethics of what we choose to eat.
        I read an interesting article on egg production today.
        The writer said that killing millions of day old chicks every year (probably billions, world-wide), is not a welfare issue, because the chicks are not believed to suffer.
        But it IS an ethical issue over bringing millions of baby chicks into the world only to immediately kill them.

That way, it makes it difficult for the opposition to capitalize on their supposed non support. For those believers, we have done our bit and should do no more.     The dunedin study tested IQ through life. The IQ of Kids who abused cannabis fell heavily compared to peers who didn’t. Income and other positive life outcomes are strongly correlated to IQ.

    If they made it a crime to eat peanut butter, after a while I’d expect the set of people still regularly eating peanut butter would be, on average, less intelligent and generally worse at most things including driving.       Yup. When I was at uni I had access to dope and booze. I drank to excess but only once had a dope brownie by mistake.
      
      Why? The only reason was that it was very important to me to stay on the straight and narrow. If I had been bust for dope I would have lost my chance to attend uni and that was a risk I was not prepared to take.

        Every one of these examples was told to me by people I know and trust.
        The young person who was told to put up with being beaten was under psychiatric care for years and rang me to thank me for being the only person who supported her.
        My former neighbour told me about his cousin pimping her daughter.
        When I rang CYPF a social worker told me they had “hundreds” of mums pimping their kids.
        I agree it is sick, but don’t blame the messenger….

  Why not?
  
  We (of Western British origin) did not tolerate slavery and bust our balls getting rid of the worst slavery on the Eastern African coast and North Africa – costing huge amounts of lives and resources.
  
  And now slavery is back again.
  
  We can send in millions of troops and trillions of dollars to get the Sunni off Shia throats and soon enough things will be back to what they are now.
  
  These are symptoms of a higher level management issue. Without a full, long term, colonial administration these places will just become shitholistans again.
  
  If we really want to fix Yemen (or other shitholistans), then we need to be prepared to recolonise it.

      Yup, and through the late 1800s and early 1900s The Royal Navy and the Army were very busy blockading slave traders and patrolling the bush in Kenya etc to stamp out slavery.
      
      Thousands of Brits died of shitty tropical diseases to stamp out the Islamic slave trade.
      
      And thousands more died trying to enforce “Pax Britannia”, stopping African/Middle Easter/whatever warlords from wiping each other out.

        1) Most slaves from Africa didn’t go anywhere near Christian countries. Only a minority went to the Americas etc.
        2) I was referring to EAST Africa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. None of those ended up in the Americas etc. Those mostly went into the ME and, to a much lesser extent, into the Indian Ocean slave markets (Indonesia etc).

        Mikey, that is a stunningly ignorant take, but typical. The African slave trade existed for a considerable time before the Americas were settled by Europeans though the majority of the traffic was in East Africa and feeding the various Arabic and other Islamic states. Slavery was also common in the Mediterranean area, with possibly (there’s no good records of actual numbers) more Europeans from Italy, Spain, Greece, and even southern England taken as slaves mainly for the North African market. Some researchers suggest that significantly more Europeans were enslaved than West Africans.
        
        Unlike the trade to the Americas though, this trade left a much smaller subsequent footprint in the population because the Islamic states routinely castrated all male slaves and prevented the slaves from breeding together.
        
        So to call the slave trade “Christian” and to deny Islamic participation is profoundly ignorant of history.

      Why would you say apartheid was slavery?
      
      Like the Brits in Kenya etc, an astounding amount of apartheid-era government resources were put into bettering the lives of black people in many ways:
      * Education: building schools etc and replacing them when they got burned down.
      * Building hospitals (Baragwanith at Soweto is the biggest hostpital in the world outside of China).
      * White males were called up for an average of 2 months a year for military services – approx a third to a half of that time was to keep the peace between warring factions.
      
      When that went away, it was business as usual again.
      
      Certainly there was some job reservation which was mainly there to provide a stepping stone for low-class Afrikaners.
      
      But slavery? That’s a bit of a barrow to push…

        As a male with a white skin I was required to go to the army for 2 years solid, then 2 months a year thereafter – much of that for the purpose of stopping black people kill each other (thanks mainly to the ANC and their policy on tyre recycling etc).
        
        My black colleagues did not have to do this. They left university and went straight to work. That gave them a two year head start. Then of course every year I had to go to the army for 2 months which plays merry hell with your career as well as your family life.

But eradicating islam seems like a pretty essential step in lifting middle east out of squalid regressive misery, keeping half your population in bondage (and women tend to be more conscientious and harder workers given the chance) is not the way to achieve happiness or 1st world living standards.       Alternatively, just let them go at eachother and a better society might emerge.

    You see the same thing in the education sector. Try suggesting that Maori families have a role in the failure of Maori kids at school. You will never see the Ministry of Education saying that. Or hinting. It is the fault of the system, or schools, and especially, the fault of teachers.
    
    If kids come from dysfunctional drug addled violent homes, what are the teachers supposed to do? And it has nothing to do with the ethnicity of such kids. However Maori are over-represented in such dysfunction. That is simply a fact.

  Listening to an interview with Children’s Commissioner Beecroft, it appears the increase itself is due to systemic racism.
  No suggestion that we should be concerned about what the root causes are. If Beecroft is correct we could just outlaw the removal and everything would be fine.

Bridges and National better have a plan to counter this, staying silent isn’t a feasible strategy either just makes them look as guilty as hell.

Voters will have to be assured that Jian Yang is not working for the Chinese otherwise you can write off the 2020 election now.

    The SIS, or the police for that matter, has no power to remove an MP.
    No one is accusing Jian Yang of a crime. The question is whether it’s a good idea for a member of the Chinese Communist Party to represent the National Party in our parliament, noting that said CCP member also worked for China’s intelligence agencies and concealed that fact when moving to NZ. If the National Party thinks it is a good idea, that’s a political judgement for them to make.
    Same thing goes for the Labour party re Raymond Huo.

    AFAIK MPs and Ministers have no requirement to get security clearances.
    
    If the SIS thought a Minister or an MP was a security risk, they would raise it with the PM. However what to do would be a political problem. In other words unlike officials, MPs are not “vetted” as a condition of doing their job.

NZ is already a part of that initiative whether you like it or not. Massive Chinese investments, immigration and housing. Commercial development of Auckland’s CBD and investments in hotels, farms and forestry. Six Chinese airlines fly directly into Auckland and Christchurch.

    No, but other than selling some product to China. Does this investment really help NZ, when:
    1. much of the benefits & dividends from these investments end up back in China (Sivlerfern farms, Westland Milk etc);
    2. Such investments further influence domestic economic policy and continue to encourage a low wage, high cost economy; and
    3. Worst of all do not bring any real added value in terms of technology to NZ or improve the skills or employability of New Zealanders.
    
    Not all foreign investment is good for NZ Ltd.

I notice that Stuff’s cub reporter doesn’t address the huge gaping hole in his logic – that Kate Middleton hasn’t suffered the same fate as her sister-in-law.

Just while I’m at it. I posted yesterday that in a Herald article an unnamed reporter repeatedly labelled criticism of Ardern a ‘bizarre rant’. They didn’t leave the reader to decide the merits of the Aussie commentator’s argument, oh no, they had to tell us what we were to make of it – and by not including a byline are we to take this as the Herals’d editorial stance on this issue, rather than merely the opinion of one journo?

If anyone wants to see how public funding of media in this country will corrupt and pervert the fourth estate they need look no further.

For a number of years now we’ve seen the momentum build for the direct public funding of media companies; due to their failure to develop a sustainable commercial model in response to the emergence of the online world. Late least year I heard Paula Penfold, egged on by Gary McCormick, on RNZ’s The Panel give an impassioned plea for taxpayer funds to be given to them ‘so that the media can fulfill their sacred mission of holding the politicians to account’ (and no doubt to keep the media luvvies in the lifestyles to which they’ve become accustomed).

What she failed to address is the fact that with the media dependent on politicians doling out taxpayer money to them they won’t be a free and fair media anymore will they. They will be paid propagandists forever fearful of biting the hand that feeds them and their families. And I put before you yesterday’s Herald article as Exhibit A. The most blatant example of flying cover for Ardern by a NZ news organisation I have recently seen.

You know it, I know it, the media know it, the politicians know it; and as we saw with Curran and Hirshfeld, as soon as politicians hold media purse strings corruption, graft and favours soon follow – in fact I think we’re already seeing it now as Ardern’s arse is kissed by those who hope she’ll throw them some bones.

I’ll just come out and say it – I think we’re better off having no media as we currently know it in this country rather then a tame, lapdog lefty media dependent on their living from the largess of Labour and Green politicians DOLING OUT OUR MONEY.

As with every other field of human endeavour – something else will arise to take their place, if there is a public demand for it.

  I guess the need for editorial independence is just one of the reasons for state-owned broadcasters to have the structure they have – separate boards, statutory protections, funding decisions made by a third body. So the opportunities for direct ministerial interference are quite limited.
  Your other opoint, about the ‘MSM’ is, of course, nonsense. The media landscape is more crowded and contestable, but on the established players have the scale and resources to provide a borad range of good quality content. a good example is the health of the allegedly ‘failing’ New York Times.

The remaining cast, extras etc, will be predominantly made up of locals, as will a huge amount of the production team. You really have to think globally here. It’s not a local production.

  So what are we supposed to do with her? Don’t get me wrong – I hold no brief for student loan defaulters. Generally speaking, any other kind of outstanding debt is not usually a criminal matter. Maybe wilful tax evasion might be.
  
  They could toss her in clink until she pays perhaps – the 1800’s “workhouse and debtors’ prison” approach? That would work well. Dunno why we ever gave it up.
  
  It will be interesting to see what crime she might be charged with. I’m not sure the defaulting on a student loan is a criminal matter. If it was, the logical approach would be to start the extradition process for offshore defaulters. As I understand it, some of them are known to IRD.

Behrouz Boochani’s arrival in New Zealand was widely publicised. Here for a book tour, he was met at the airport by Amnesty International leaders and Green Party MP Golriz Ghahraman.
Boochani, who wrote a book while on Manus Island, attracted the attention of organisers at a Christchurch literary festival and was invited to speak at the festival in late November. Boochani came to New Zealand from PNG, but without passing through Australia. He had a one month visitors visa which expired on December 15th.

If this man has still overstayed his visa period, and is still in New Zealand, one wonders – after such a fuss over his freedom, and his championing by various “highly placed people” – why does he treat Immigration in such a lax manner?

If he ever wishes to enter Australia, will the ironic reply be, “No, you overstayed in New Zealand”.

Bernard Hickey has written an article published on Newsroom about the upcoming election.

I agree with some of his comments, disagree with others. However there is one massive omission from the piece – discussion of National’s strategic options.

Hickey devotes several paragraphs to ways Labour could choose to campaign, discussing the possibility of a land tax or electoral accommodations with the Greens or NZF. But major policies National could campaign on (removing first-year free tertiary study say, or reversing the petrol tax), and the question of whether National should rule out working with NZF don’t get a single word. Not exactly balanced.

        Especially as doing so while sidelining all the work that MFAT are doing sends a really bad signal to the world, particularly our allies in the States.

        Whether you like it or not China exists and forms a major part of our world both historically and economically. Only a fool would deliberately spit in the face of a major trading partner, much like ardern has done with the US, and we see the results of such stupidity far too frequently.
        
        Meeting, greeting and even acknowledging the benefits of a trading partner do not imply acceptance of their behaviour without question but I have yet to see ardern reject either dollars or meetings with representatives of China and the CCP.
        
        I suggest you re read Simon’s explanation as to why they “supplemented” the MFAT meetings with meetings of more substance.

  I saw that article and the timing is good as National has to decide on it’s strategic options. Currently the only opposition in NZ is Act and a hand full of National MPs that are prepared to go a little against the grain.
  The totalitarian movement to manipulate the school curriculum in the climate area is truly horrifying.
  Over the years we sort of put up with teachers, fresh from their indoctrination center at training collage, ramming Marxist thoughts down student throats because most either left teaching or grew up.
  However to have unproven hypothesis and opinion masquerading as fact and to openly be advised on how to handle the dissenters is 1960’s Moscow.
  No doubt we will have similar issues with the ‘new’ history curriculum.

    The captain was stern, and overly prone to long bible readings 🙂 , but a fair and good hearted person.
    The young woman working there in the early 70s was an angel.
    Unfortunately a lot of Kiwi women in positions of authority in past generations were quite brutal.

      So you can’t argue the substantive facts in the paper or the critique, but have a go at the Blog owners qualifications. ( and yours are?) The biggest issue in this paper is the inclusion of the climate fraud Mann as a lead author. They may be right, the ocean may well be warming, but that has nothing to do with human released CO2. Oceans have massive thermal inertia in the order of thousands of years, so what ever caused this warming may have been that long ago.

Some NZ vet was quoted by Herald as saying the Oz fires were the worst ecological disaster since the Ice Age.

What bullshit.

First off, he actually said it was “one of the worst”, but that was not good enough for Herald so they had to amp that up to “the worst”.

Even still, ecologically (long term) the fires have been serious, but hardly a disaster and certainly not anywhere near the worst in the last few thousand years.

Area of Oz burned: about 2%
Number of major species made extinct: 0 (possibly some insects etc).

The bush that burned is adapted to fire. It has burned worse and bounced back and will do so again. A few million animals might have burned depending on what you want to count as an “animal”, but those will return too.

Not exactly a disaster ecologically.

    A personal disaster for an individual koala is not an ecological disaster.
    
    It certainly looks like some koala got burned, but even a 20% loss of koala is not going to put it in the big league of ecological disasters.
    
    For example, Maori coming to NZ wiped out many species (inc Moa) and radically changed the ecology of many places. Agriculture did too.
    
    Ecologicially, the Oz fires in inconsequential.

Had to laugh. We were just discussing the story in yesterdays Herald, where someone was moaning about having a ‘smelly tenant’ stay in their house after renting it through AirBNB. Apparently he never even showered on the night he arrived and stunk the place out. LOL!!!
As my partner said, if your stupid enough to allow complete strangers stay in your home, and sleep in your bed, WTF can you expect? Who in their right mind would ever let anyone you didn’t know to even get through the f~~kng gate!!

Just saying.

  (Injections in eyeballs!!!!)
  
  We’re similarly aged… I grew up in W(h)anganui – non fluoridated water
  
  Hubby grew up in PN ( water fluoridated from 1962… when he was 10)
  
  I went to Massey (PN) at 17. and Hubby and I have lived in same places for the last 50 years.
  
  I’ve drunk 8 – 16 cups of tea every day of my life since age 13.
  
  I don’t have AMD (yet?) but have crap teeth and have spent a wee fortune at Dentists.

    My wife has required Eylea injections in her eyes for the macular degeneration. Prior to Pharmac funding that pharmaceutical it was costing about $35,000 per year. Now it has come down considerably.

Big uproar at the moment about the number of Maori children uplifted by Oranga Tamariki… then there’s article on Stuff about a 10 year old boy beaten by his parents for running away :”They caught up with him on Highbury Ave, where the mother picked him up in her arms before punching him three times in the mouth, causing him to fall to the ground.
She then kept punching him, with the husband joining in the attack by also punching the boy in the head.
The boy lost consciousness at one stage, but was roused when he was punched one more time in the head by his father…” Dad’s (and I shudder using that word) in the Mongrel Mob… hhmmmm.
