    Yonks ago when we received WWF for a few years, I recall the Winz workers constantly reminding us that they have to be careful to dish out the correct amount and no more, because it was public money.
    Maybe these Dames need reminding that the cash being handed over doesnt just drop out of the sky.

This Whanau Ora application to the Waitangi Tribunal because more money please and ‘our people’ have to manage it ‘our way’.

The plaintiff Dames seem to have forgotten that Whanau Ora has never been for Maori only, but for all New Zealanders. In theory anyway.

  Yes but they still have a point and for the Prime Minister not address the problem shows how She and Labour continually take the Maori vote for granted. When it suits Jancinda she will address the problem and that will only when there is something in for her, media headlines , votes or bad press that is hurting her. That is not the way to treat anyone when you have had correspondence that you don’t appreciate you are Prime Minister and everyone should be treated equally not ignored.

      They need a “decent review” of the antiquated customs and mindset that are making them dependent on government handouts.
      Everywhere in the world where people cling on to ideas that are obviously past their use-by date, you find poverty or dependency on welfare.
      Once chauvinist nonsense like women/ girls should be bearing as many children as possible from as early an age as possible, are replaced with females being valued for their intelligence and ability to contribute to society as equals to males, the dependency will reduce markedly.

  I have worked in the area as Whanau Ora is supposed to. Clearly it is really “Provider Ora” in that it provides cushy jobs and incomes and they don’t actually do anything much for the families.
  One person who was maori said to me. “We don’t want to go to those providers. All those people want to do is drive around in cars”
  As for Kaupapa methods nothing wrong with it. But Turia is not aware that any good agency non maori works with the whole family already, and thinks through the whole situation with a view to the wider issues.
  The idea that maori have some exclusive understanding that nobody else has is just marketing rot.

    O’Connor was gifted the seat when Dunne did a runner leaving National on the fence. He is gone this election, Ohariu being a decent electorate with the majority hard-working or business people.
    Not a large number of ratepayer/taxpayer-funded housing leeches or beneficiaries supporting Labour/Greens.

      Correct. By the time Dunne decided he wasn’t going to stand again, it was too late for Brett Hudson to run a full campaign for electorate votes. This time around, he’s been in full campaign mode since the last election. Ohariu will be come a National Party stronghold later this year.

        I live and have lived in the electorate for around 20 years now
        Dunne was very visible and very active in the community
        Hudson is just as visible and active, but maybe not 100% same as Dunne, maybe 80-90%
        O’Connor is active too but i’d suspect around 50% of Dunne
        Ohariu is very much centre of the political spectrum so i suspect it will move back towards National this election but the margin will be 1-2000 not massive
        Thats my prediction

  Funny how Greg O’Connor tried to make cheap political capital out of it. He would have been whistling a completely different tune if his electorate office had been broken into.
  Another nail in his coffin. He won Ohariu through a stroke of good luck last time. He will not be so lucky this time. He will need to pass his CV round private detective agencies to see if any of his former Police mates will hire him.

    Unfortunately, National had no right to demand the keys to his Botany electorate office. For an electorate MP the office is a matter between the MP and Parliamentary Services. The situation would be different for an electorate office run by a ‘buddy’ list MP as the funding for such electorate is via the party and the party will allocate the limited number of offices it can afford to best overall advantage.

Most of us have seen the video proving CO2 causes global warming by using a heat lamp and drinks bottles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwtt51gvaJQ

This uses high concentrations of CO2 and a heat lamp, which is far higher than normal, because they want to speed things up and be able to clearly demonstrate the effects before the kids retire.

This experiment has been shown to hundreds of thousands of kids to prove climate change is real.

I am working on a similar project to prove that Bluetooth kills off the rain forest and coral reefs.

Of course Bluetooth is very low level and we need speed things up, so I will use a more powerful 2.4GHz source. Luckily I have a microwave oven kicking around.

Also, the whole rain forest won’t fit in my microwave, and there are biosecurity hassles, so I am using a pot plant.

Same with the coral reef in the sea, so I am using a cup of water with a bit of cauliflower it it – looks the same.

Ok, so after only 20 minutes the rainforest is dead and the sea has boiled dry and the coral is just dried out mush.

Clearly we should stop using Bluetooth immediately.

    Thanks for your guidance Maggy. I will team up with those other scientists – political scientists – to develop that part of things.
    
    I’m just focusing on developing my trough and the new base radio technology. I thought of calling it New Internet Wireless Access but NIWA is already taken. This new radio technology can only achieve very short range – 20 mm or so and low speeds – but at least we can call it sustainable so we can get governments to force people to use it. The political scientists might be able to help with that.

      -Environmentally friendly.
      -No radiation.
      -Recycle old tin cans.
      -We answer the age old question of how long is a piece of string (as long as it needs to be).
      -And I’m sure we could get big companies like Watties and McCains funding advertising that tells us how damaging Wi-Fi is.
      -And for speaker phone mode, just use those large 1 litre pineapple cans, thus supporting those pacific Islands.
      -It would create jobs as you would need to have two people at the end of each section to relay the message, and people in rowboats every few metres to cross rivers, lakes and oceans.
      
      The greens would jump at the chance. 😉

    True, BUT some assumptions are made.
    1. The plastic bottle does not deform under pressure
    2. The actual alka seltzer tablet (solid) has no volume impact on the experiment.
    3. Assuming 1.(above) the bottle does not deform, the gas pressure above the liquid does not become so high that it impedes the alka seltzer tablet from becoming purely gaseous.
    Not to mention any other minor effects, of impurities in this “closed” system.

    There are numerous defects in the experiment shown there.
    
    For example, the water CO2 container is milky with bubbles while the air one shows the colour of the desk behind it. This means the light (and heat) are going through the air container easier than the CO2 container with more heat and light are being absorbed by the bubbles. Result: CO2 container gets warmer regardless of what the gas is.
    
    … and of course 4 alkaselsers are going to pretty much make for close to 100% CO2 – not the little 300-400ppm tweak we see in nature.
    
    … and of course the one bottle contains air and water while the other contains CO2 and a the other a monosodium citrate solution. Hardly an apples to apples comparison.
    
    Aka junk science.

      From my lab, using bottles and lamps as per the original test as outlined, the correct scientific test would be:
      
      Take two 1 litre plastic bottles
      Fill each with 500ml of filtered water. i.e. no fluoride or chlorine.
      
      Mark one bottle A (400ppm)
      Mark one bottle B (500ppm)
      
      Put the cap on bottle A.
      
      Take a plastic bag, making sure it is flat. Breathe in NORMALLY, and exhale into the bag, inflating it.
      
      Remove 1 ml of air from bottle B and replace with 1 ml of air from the bag. Cap bottle B. Tricky to do but not in a lab.
      
      Put each plastic bottle upside down inside a close-fit 90% cover metal sleeve which is inside a 10 litre bucket of dry ice. Cover dry ice. Or better still put them in a freezer. Shine heating lamps on the base of each bottle, and monitor temperatures of air and water inside each bottle.
      
      Using bottles and lamps, this experiment is as close as possible to planet earth.
      
      You will see 5/8 of 3/4 of sweet F A temperature difference.

  As you know, the demo is not a real simulation of an atmosphere, because it is plastic and an increase in pressure will result in an increase in temperature as per Boyles law. Pressure does not increase in the atmosphere. This is junk science. It would be a fail in classical school science, but a pass in some modern liberal tree hugging course.

    I’m curious about pressure and climate change.
    
    Can you answer, if we have extra energy in the form of heat from the sun, then why wouldn’t that energy in the atmosphere just expand out into space a little against gravity to accommodate a constant pressure in a bigger volume? In that way the 408ppm CO2 is equally concentrated as it was at 350ppm and therefore have nil effect on warming at the global level.

      There is a school of thought that CO2 is lower than it should be, because earth has been uninhabited for so long. We assume that any increasing CO2 is bad, but is it? Is it not just a byproduct of people?.
      
      The sheer increase in humans breathing in O2 and breathing out CO2 has tripled in the last 60+ years, plus all the animals and agriculture need to feed us, and all the technology need to support us humans.
      
      If you triple the number of cocktail parties you have, it is going to result in more crumbs and wine stains on the carpet. They are a natural byproduct of cocktail parties.

      Having said that, what is the cause? People.
      So you either have to accept that more people create more CO2, and that the CO2 levels are within what the planet can handle, or we become more responsible and limit our selves to 1 or maybe 2 children.
      
      That being said, is the rising CO2 level causing temperature increase? I am not convinced.
      
      If we are to accept the premise that CO2 is rising too quickly, then why do Climate Change advocates never talk about the population increase. How many of them have publicly committed to one child. None. How many are advocating phasing out working for families or reducing child subsidies to avoiding encouraging people to pump out more kids. None.
      
      If publicly, Climate Change activists don’t take a stand and lead the way by setting a example by having less children, then it tells me that they expect other people to make the sacrifices, but not them.
      
      It is precisely this dishonest stance of the Climate Change and Extinct Rebellion activists, that causes lack of respect.
      
      Personally, I’m OK with the CO2 rise. I believe that man will find cleaner forms of energy.
      
      So either the Climate Change and Extinct Rebellion activists also accept that and become part of the solution, or they start leading the way by having less children.

    If there were any “solutions” that were easy to implement then I’d say go for it – apply the precautionary principle reduce CO2 and screw the plants if they starve.
    
    But the costs are huge (and I don’t just mean money, but cost in lives etc, interfering with real problems that actually need priority etc too). The “solution” looks worse than the problem. Thus, we should still apply the precautionary principle and do nothing.
    
    Every time a wind turbine gets put in it drives up the cost of electricity. Result: old people suffering in the cold, industry wrecked, food production down and people dying of starvation.
    All the energy/tax/whatever put into “climate action” is energy not put into important stuff like real environmental degradation, sorting out political messes etc.
    
    Climate change provides a handy chimera for the worst people in the world to hide behind. Southern Africa has about 40 million people facing starvation due to inept governance and corruption, but let’s just blame climate change…

        Most scientists today study science as a 9 to 5 job, and in order to continue to get funding have to deliver the results their employers are after.
        
        Many teach science and know its BS but do it anyway. Case in point the fraudulent “climate change experiment” youtube clip as talked about above, and shown to children. If I was a teacher and forced to show that to my students, I would resign on the spot.

        Typical output of volcanoes is low, but the bugger that gets you is the atypical output when they erupt.
        
        Our little White Island has a “normal” output in line with a few thousand cows (I forget the numbers right now, but I checked them a few weeks back). However when it erupted, the output was thousands of times the typical output. One wee eruption from one wee volcano and all the wins from hypothetically killing off our dairy herd would be undone.
        
        Now imagine what it is like for a really big volcano.

    Both Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein were supposed to have been intelligent men. But is was remarked about both men, that if they were not married or had housekeepers they would have died of food poisoning at an early age.
    
    Success at one thing does not imply being right in an another area. Unless they have solid principles underpinning their life, being so focused usually means they suck at other things. Climate Change is not a popularity contest. If is not a battle of who has the smartest dad, the biggest dick, or is most well known. It is about ideas, principles and science.

So people in UK are trying to raise half of a million quid so Big Ben can bong on Brexit day on 31 January. This would require temporarily re-installing the chiming mechanism.
I have a simpler solution. Simply hit it with a hammer or if that is too difficult then ping it with an air rifle.

My partner shot up to Tindalls yesterday to check everything was okay at the house for Aniversary Weekend. The mower-man was there doing the lawns and was saying our neighbors, (a lovely German couple who are hardly ever there), have let their property for the holiday period to a family of Chinese. That’s the first time they’ve ever done that.

Actually, its really lucky my partner went up. He found two cockroaches scurrying around in the kitchen cupboard which he squashed 🙁 (That’s the first time we’ve ever seen those as well). In fact we were wondering if anyone in the group might be able to recommend an effective bait we can lay to eradicate them?

  Try a spray of Aussie tea tree oil (malaleuca). Mix a little with lot of water and it will get into most places by way of the vapour. It’s highly toxic to small critters (removes bed bug infestation too). Harmless to humans like that.

        To make up something quickly buy the sweet orange oil. It’s available on line an possibly locally.
        About 1% concentration 10ml oil/litre water should be OK. It could be mixed with a dash of household dishwash liquid for blending.

So a second motorist has been caught with a damaged engine when using 91 instead with 95 petrol, and neither had any luck with the Tribunal.
While the dealer technically won in each case, they lose out publicity wise, in the recent $7000 dollar case IMO refunding the cost of fixing the engine would have well paid for itself through favourable publicity.
There are three easy things the industry can do to help avoid such grief and suffering. One is to put a sticker inside the filler cover advising that 95 or diesel as the case may be is to be used. Then add it to the information card displayed on used cars for sale and get a written acknowledgement from the buyer that 95 is needed.
Rental car companies should put a sticker on all their vehicle fuel cap covers indicating whether 91, 95 or diesel should be used. I recently rented a large Holden and tried thumbing through the handbook to check the fuel type, but gave up and put in 95 to be on the safe side. I noted this in their customer satisfaction survey and I hope they have now put stickers on.

Since pretty well all run of the mill cars run on 91 OK (and 95 would make insignificant performance gains), people can be excused for thinking 95 is a premium product for Porches and the like and so there would be a general lack of awareness here. It seems more and more run of the mill European cars need 95 and are being sold to people unaware that they must fill them up with 95.
    Interestingly when the Auckland Harbour Bridge first opened, there was a spate of cars running out of fuel (when the car was going up or down the tank outlet could be left high and dry and petrol gauges are not accurate). The Bridge patrol would stick in a gallon of low octane fuel to see the motorists on their way and charge the motorist the cost of the petrol plus five shillings. Hopefully those needing higher octane petrol took it easy until they could get to the nearest petrol station.

      I think 98 is the “premium” fuel. The priimary difference in the octane rating is the reduced tendency to pre-detonate at higher compression ratios. Most modern engines have knock sensors to make adjustments to the spark advance/retard when this occurs, but there is a limit on how much they can adjust.
      
      This problem primarily affects turbo-charged vehicles because the turbo works by pushing more fuel/air mixture into the engine to produce greater power – and in the process effectively raises the compression ratio. Thus low octane fuel raises the risk of pre-detonation. And if such a vehicle is working hard, say going up a hill with a load, then there is very little that any engine management system can do to protect against the pre-detonation.
      
      Some non-turbo cars with particularly high compression ratios can also suffer this problem but typically less damagingly so than turbo (or super) charged engines.
      
      With a modern engine, turbo or otherwise, higher octane fuel does typically improve performance and economy a bit because the engine management system can be more aggressive as knock won’t occur so easily. However the improvement is usually less than the additional cost of the higher rated fuel.

      Sorry I have no sympathy. High octane fuel is not related to whether a car is “luxury”. It is needed in cars with a high compression ratio to avoid premature detonation. I drive a 17 year old Toyota celica with a high compression engine. (OK laugh away but I like it and it is well cared for 🙂 ) It needs 98 octane fuel.
      
      Given the investment you make in a car, surely you can be bothered reading the manual or doing a quick google search? I am not a petrol head at all, but I can read a manual.

    I specifically asked what fuel it took. I was told 91. I questioned it, given there was a “premium fuel only” sticker in the flap. They said, “modern motors automatically adjust”.
    
    I never took their advice and only use 95 or 98. But I think it’s pretty shit when a business that sells cars doesn’t know what the product they sell requires in the way of fuel

  You only need to use high octane in hot weather. Cars are designed to run at ambient temperatures of up to 50°C, and the critical thing is the temperature at end of compression which is 3x higher than ambient. Eg a 10°C increase in ambient makes for a 30°C increase in temp at end of compression. 50°C never occurs in NZ, even 30°C is rare, and that is a massive 60°C lower end of compression temperature that engines would have no trouble handling except for the fact the engine management standard spark advance maps are set up with slightly more advance to make use of higher octane fuels.
  
  Cars have knock sensors that detect onset of knock and retard spark to stop it, so in practice it shouldn’t be a problem, particularly if you use a light-foot in hot weather (full throttle is most dangerous for knock).
  
  Best would be just to have your engine management computer switched to a spark map appropriate to use 91 – which should be easy to do, the spark advance look-up tables for different octane numbers (in different markets) are created during engine development. Only problem might be car companies trying to stop this being done (they tend to try an impede parallel imports), but likely aftermarket tuners can get the spark tables and reprogram the engine management system in a few minutes.

  This is despite my car being a Japan import like the case cited above.
  
  I tend to agree with the tribunal that it is primarily the owner’s responsibility, not the dealer. Though this can be tricky when it is an import model with no physical manual so you have to go hunting online for one….

  I have my doubts regards MSG. Many countries in Asia still use it in quantity including Japan where life expectancy is high, same too for China. Glutamate occurs naturally in Kombu seaweed; it can also come from dried shrimp or bonito flakes, or from fermented soy. In Japan, it’s usually found in ramen noodles a very popular staple eaten by most if not all Japanese. However, Mrs Bell-47 is from a poor SEA country and likely was not privy to western attitudes towards MSG all those years ago but still has a slightly rude but interesting wives tale about MSG in that high consumption could lead to the “loss of pubic hair”.., loosely translated from her language. So there does seem to be some awareness that it could be harmful though some people spend quite a lot of money on grooming the grass so may be a painless alternative?

        All I believe he said was that the tax reduction was the biggest ever at approx 1% of $20trillion = $200bn. Reagan’s was approx 3% of $4tn = $120bn.

I am baffled by this cycle bridge over the Wanganui River. Seems to have been built a couple of years ago and is now sitting in an adjacent paddock as the right “consultation” process has not taken with local East Polynesians. Now if the river has been legally found it is to be treated as a real person (what legal lunatic found that), how does the local Council who want to install the bridge, consult with the river? Go down to the water’s edge and mumble? Seems that the answer is that there is another group who are now seen as the river’s representatives. I’d like to know if the river has assigned these trustees. In the meantime the bridge stays uninstalled, another East Polynesian group gets to have another suck on the communal teat and nothing gets done.

    The Stock Market is independent of Trump. The FED runs the money creation programme which has produced this bubble. They have a problem with so much debt they have to keep interest rates low to accommodate that. Reversal will cause havoc: continuing may bring disaster.
    
    Money always has a home and if you double its quantity, prices will change accordingly, otherwise relative equities are not maintained. The FED’s excessive created money has found its way into global assets via the banks which has also pushed up our property values.
    
    We are not immune to the needed adjustments that will come. If it breaks in the next six months G. Robertson will wish he was not Finance Minster. The borrowing programme will become a fairy tale.

I have zero sympathy for her, it’s almost as if she is blaming the university for not teaching her enough to justify the expense. Also, it’s not unusual to find someone who is a university graduate working in a field completely different to that of the qualification. Miss Bell-47 number 1 has a masters degree in Japanese but is now a senior HR person in an NZ software company. She’ll never use the degree and wasted years studying.

  The point of the article is that the writer has a degree and a substantial student loan, but the degree is out of date to be of any use to obtain a related job.
  I suppose the lesson to be learnt is to have your career planned out in advance and thus work towards the appropriate degree as a first step.
  I knew someone who wanted to be an orthodontist and spent years down at Otago, at great expense and wound up with a huge loan.
  Normally that would be no problem because of the high starting salaries, but he quickly found he couldn’t cope with the realities of the job. Faces smashed up by car accidents, that sort of thing.
  Nothing to be ashamed of; just the way things are.
  So here’s this now crippling loan to pay off . . . . .

  At that point, we may as well just switch to SM with a 71/50 split – parties would get one seat for every 2% of the party vote they receive (no need for a threshold).

And a “big shout-out” to all who took the time to reply to my earlier post @8:32 am, in relation to cockroaches at the beach. My partner is out right now getting some stuff from Rentokil and i’ll be buying the ingredients for the Natural Remedies to try as well. So thank you all 😀

We were actually just discussing the problem over lunch and came to the conclusion its happened because our silly neighbors insist on leaving their rubbish bags at the gate to be collected. What we do, is put all ours in the SUV and dump them elsewhere during the night. My partner often heads over to the Mt Roskill shops and uses the council bins there. I can honestly say we’ve never ever seen a Cockie in Remmers.

I got an invoice from a firm, 36 kilometres away. It took five days to get to me.
It only took me a few minutes to work out that the speed of delivery was, GET THIS; 8.33 seconds per millimetre!!!

  The current minister is soft on this sort of issue which undermines the department/corporation and the decent tenants…. However, where do they send them… a motel?
  
  Until mr ball peen is employed to “condition” these tenants then expect much more of the same, especially now there’s a buck to be made.

  These types of people are known as ‘complex dysfunctionals’ drugs, no education, unemployable, mental problems, violence, criminal connections, sordid behaviour, unable to parent where a child thrives………these people largely can’t plan a future beyond today.
  
  Truth be known – the government stands and hesitates at the front door not knowing what to do.[That was all written in a welfare report].
  
  I imagine that those who ‘are employable’ will be kicked out of public housing for poor behaviour, while those who can’t possibly hold down a job will get to stay.

  Please don’t be offended Maggy but I truly think that this government hasn’t got a fucking clue about what their policy on taking a daily dump is let alone something this serious.
  
  We currently have an overstayer being encouraged by part of this government and ignored by the rest.
  
  Policy is a day to day thing based on feelz… what “what’s in it for wynston” feelz and what ardern thinks she feelz. It is an appalling way to run a country especially while the non elected pm and his pr girl are still avoiding contact and decisions.

Govt about to buy their way out of the Ihumatao dispute before Waitangi embarrassment.
Look for some payout (under the table of course) to the gangs in Hawkes Bay to ensure no more problems before the annual BBQ where our caring PM dishes a couple of burnt snarlers to the locals.

They come pretty cheap when you think about it.

OMG,Just saw a plod on tv1 drawing his glock and pointing it,he was holding it with his right hand and had his left hand on the top of the receiver ,FFS if he was to pull the trigger in that stance he’d probably do serious damage to his left hand it really makes you wonder WTF is going on in the NZ police.

  What was funny, a neighbor was telling us he observed two little scrotes raiding his Nectarines the other day so he phoned the Remuera Police Station… (he has them on speed dial). Three cops were there within minutes, but alas, the little buggers had escaped. They called for Dogs, but apparently all the vans were tied up in Mt Roskill.
  Then, if you can believe it, the 3 young cops took HIS fingerprints! They said it was so he could be eliminated from any further inquires.
  As our neighbor said, “Wished he hadn’t bothered f~~king ringing?”

Our govt failed with the measles epidemic, god help us with this

* A professor of public health says it’s time New Zealand considered surveillance at our border, as cases of a deadly new virus triple in China.

China has also confirmed for the first time that the new strain of Coronavirus, which is similar to the flu, can spread from person to person.

As a result, China is now scanning passenger temperatures at airports and checking for signs of fever on some flights.

The new measures come as authorities confirm the virus is transmissible between humans.

Otago University Professor of Public Health, Michael Baker, says the news changes everything.

“It would be very responsible to start looking at what elements of our pandemic plan should be rolled out for this event,” he told Newshub.*

        But serious questions should be asked of the Chinese Ambassador as to why deadly diseases are only coming out of China – whereas none are coming out of India.
