Winston Peters mocks Simon Bridges as a “badly bred dog barking at everything”

I still await the judge’s decision on Peters’ “private details” case – the super overpayment. With Winston’s prompt behaviour in repayment being commended as exemplary and an official IRD letter thanking him for his swift co-operation, his proper performance was spectacular compared to Metiria Turei’s amoral mess.

But the subsequent witch hunt for a leaker, with Peters suing people he has since acknowledged were not responsible for any leak, and his utter wastage of taxpayer funds has in fact suggested any “damage” done, was self inflicted.

I wait to see if the judge treats the matter of “damages” the same way as the judge who made the decision in the case of Colin Graig, that his damages were accrued the same way: inflicted by himself. And it was all, in Winston’s case, over “private details”, which as far as I am aware, never went beyond information which Winston voluntarily himself gave to media or released in statements he himself made.

Turning a beneficial [sic] fact that was an Electoral advantage to an unpleasant distraction – was the damage of “a dog that can not leave a bone alone”.

Byron Kathleen Mitchell points out that what people most criticise in others is usually a trait they would most hate to have themselves, but so often do.

Is Winston directly baiting Simon to say National can not work with New Zealand First?
Or that he would have voters believe that, despite all the shit Winston throws at Simon, for whatever personal reason, they can co-operate to serve the country?

And then there is Winston’s attitude to Paula Bennett.

  Problem is, Winston told his NZF conference in 2018 that National would chew through two leaders before the next election and despite the efforts of MSM and Whaleoil/BFD, National has not changed one leader. So Winston has a bit of face saving. Possibly Winston regards Labour/Greens as such an easy touch he can get what he wants out of them after the forthcoming election without the need to try and play them off against National.
  
  As for the lawsuit, presumably he is meeting costs out of his own pocket unless there is some secret agreement with Labour. As far as I can see there is no basis for the Crown to meet his legal costs – he was not a Minister when the ‘wrong’ happened and anyway the matter would have nothing to do with Ministerial responsibility if he had been a Minister at that time. As things stand he will have some costs awarded against him with respect to the two Ministers and these would be paid to the Crown.

  Winston has only gone with National in coalition only once in 22 years and that failed. National should call time on Winston; additionally this kind of rhetoric from Peters against the leaders of National just validates a vote for NZ1st is a vote for Labour and the Greens.

      It would be a far superior move for Simon to be able to say, “I do not have to rule Winston out, because Winston rules himself out . As all can see, it will not be possible for National to work with him. As it hasn’t worked for Labour, especially not for Little. ‘Comman sense’, which Winston so often lauds, makes that point quite demonstrable ”

China is strongly stepping up measures to fight the spreading coronavirus epidemic. Meanwhile identified cases in the country have risen to nearly 1400.

President Xi Jinping and the Communist Party’s top echelon, the Politburo Standing Committee, have set up a group that will work directly under the committee.

The South China Morning Post reports:

“Analysts said that by creating the leading group under the Standing Committee the party’s leaders would be able to mobilise all available resources to contain the outbreak. It would also send a clear signal to provincial officials of the severity of the situation and force them to act swiftly to any instructions.”

The newspaper says lower ranking Communist Party members are often reluctant to act until ordered to do so, and there have been calls for punishments to be handed down to those who may have dawdled in the first days of the coronavirus outbreak.

  China’s official figures estimate 41 people have died so far and 1,300 have been infected. But, the Telegraph reports, experts at Imperial College reckon as many as 9,700 could have come down the disease.

  Well Phil Quinn has a big dose of TDS but at least interviews a NZ Trump supporter. The NZ Trump supporter points out the economy, which is booming. But still Phil Quinn doesn’t see it. He goes on about rising inequality. That shows us Phil Quinn is a leftist. As long as we’re equal nothing else matters!
  
  Actually Trump freed up the economy, cut taxes, cut regulations, freed up the energy sector resulting in real wage growth and the lowest unemployment in 50 years.
  
  But still Quinn doesn’t see it. Jacinda is nice but she has slashed the energy sector, raised taxes and increased regulations. The result is lower business confidence and rising unemployment.
  
  But that doesn’t matter to Quinn. Because Jacinda is nice.

    ardern is not nice. She pushes a “nice” image but that is all it is, a facade.
    
    Look to her appearances. They are designed for maximum media appeal. She mistakenly said that she would only do a radio interview in Christchurch if there was another disaster…. then desperately tried to dial that back. One of the first things ardern and labour did was remove the prayer from parliament. I personally don’t care but then she decided to broadcast the muslim prayer that currently holds more of a sinister tinge to most non muslims than any christian prayer.
    
    The Grace Millane death was cynically used by ardern to further her public image. If that had been my daughter I would have been extremely angry but as a spectator I was disgusted.
    
    White Island was another opportunity for her to grandstand with “awesome hand wringing” empathy when in reality the tragedy has raised more issues about the reliability and competence of the government departments involved both before and after the tragedy.
    
    The overseas drivel generated by her regarding making our country “safe” by removing a class of firearm from law abiding legally armed citizens is just stomach churning crap while our illegal firearms owners have recently ramped up their criminal usage of those firearms.
    
    We have a non elected quasi leader running around looking for photo ops, primarily focused on overseas exposure, while virtually every promise she has ever made is consigned to the garbage bin.

      Could that be what Trump was talking about? The light-efficient bulbs the Lefties planned to force New Zealanders must now be a very small part of the market compared with LED bulbs.

There’s a saying: When you owe the bank $1M, you have a problem; when you owe the bank $100M, they have a problem.”

The power balance has shifted. In the first case you have little leverage against the bank, in the second case the bank really needs to work with you and make a deal.

It strikes me the same applies in the relationship between corrections, judiciary and police (or society in general) and the gangs.

Cops can’t just treat the gangs as the crims they are. They have to negotiate.

When there are arrests, it is not generally the kingpins that get pinged, but someone lower down the food chain that is annoying the gang kingpins and can be fed to the cops so that society can be placated.

  Gangs are a worldwide problem and are referred to by different name depending on their purpose, political, religious, drug distribution, brotherhood, extortion, ethnic superiority etc. or self protection.
  So there’s mafia, drug cartels, Yakuza, triads, KKK, IRA, ISIS
  Few, if any, are eliminated by locking them all up, but it’s a lot easier to say you’re going to do that than tackle the problem from first principles.

    There are conditions that create criminals,but there remain choices. Some people from deprived backgrounds, who have had terrible childhoods, who have been poor and picked on, become worthwhile, law-abiding citizens.

CMM, you sound like the Neville Chamberlain of law and order.

If the police, the Government, and the legal Establishment are going to run a firearms purge of the community, they have got to take firearms from the gangs.

If the police aren’t up to it, use the Army. If there aren’t enough prisons, set up detention camps.

Most important: let’s make it a top election issue, so the citizenry can decide if they want to legitimise the gangs mafia – or break them.

  What is important to Hugzilla and the cops is the perception of doing something, not actually achieving things.
  
  Tightening up gun control to “make our communities safer”.
  
  So they hit the easy targets (compliant, law abiding citizens) and lots of press releases and Hugzilla’s luvvies talk up all the wonderful things she has done about gun control. This helps #CinD4UN.
  
  They do not need to take guns away from gangs to achieve their goals.
  
  According to some estimates, 80% of prisoners are gang members. They also have a scrote army of teens that cannot be prosecuted but cause general mayhem (burglary, tagging, class disruption etc). The gangs can do what the hell they want if they wish.
  
  That forces the government to the bargaining table.

      I certainly agree. That is what they should have done. ANd that would have been hard.
      
      But the goal was never to actually make NZ safe and remove problem guns from society. The goal was to put on a show – particularly for the UN luvvies.
      
      NB: “problem guns” are not defined by their magazine size etc, but who has them. Guns are tools. A screwdriver used by a plumber is not a “problem screwdriver” but a screwdriver used by a burglar is.

      I am not being a Chamberlaine and suggesting they should make a deal.
      
      I am more of a Churchill. I am saying they ARE already appeasing the gangs (and should not be).
      
      I’m bloody certain they are making deals with the gangs by turning a blind eye here and there, deciding who to throw under the bus when they need to make a splash.
      
      The gangs are out of control. The cops/corrections/whatever have to present a picture to us honest abiding that this is not the case.
      
      I’ll bet $100 to a servo pie there are plenty tinny houses, landmower repair shops and all sorts of other things the cops know about but do nothing about.
      
      Same with drugs, illegal goods and stand-over tactics in prisons etc.
      
      When something does grab the public eye the cops are forced to do something, they will have a wee chat with the Big Fish and, together they decide who will end up in the net (somebody that’s been a bit of a pain in the bum for Big Fish and needs “firing”). And the guy who takes the fall won’t squeal because if he does he knows he will slip on a bar of soap in the shower.

This being the Ardern declared Year Of Political truth, does she have to now answer questions truthfully, even if they apply to a year or two earlier?

I refer you to Ardern’s acceptance of the End Oil And Gas Exploration petition on the steps of Parliament, which was a Greenpeace petition, but Greenpeace featured only in spoken name as far as one could tell.
Otherwise it was four enormous photo placards, reminiscent visually of a Nazi rally so much did Labours red, white and black dominate, including “placard chicks” dressed in the Party’s colours.
Who paid for the placards?
Who authorised the total Labour imagery and wording used?
And as it appeared to be a Labour presentation was that why it was so essential the Ardern front it, even to the extent of delaying a State luncheon for President Joko Widodo, which in fact had an “impromptu” value masking to some extent the time and planning that must have gone into Labour’s presentation of a Greenpeace petition.
And it appears Greenpeace postcards inviting people to sign the petition were also Labour imagery, with Ardern portrait photo on them and Labour colours.

Will Labour truthfully comment on any of this now?
Will Labour confess now that in 2017 they did not campaign on doing this?
It was not in the coalition agreement.
They did not consult on this.
Initial decisions were outside of Cabinet.
And it was stated to be part of a plan to transition away for fossil fuels, but there was no actual publicised PLAN – only aspirations.

And did New Zealand First allow this to happen in horse-trading of policies to get Winston’s paranoiac waka-jumping law past the post?

      But consider this:
      1) As it says, 90% comes from 10 rivers, and technology has been developed that could used to catch all the plastic and process it.
      2) Many months before Stuff removed the upticks / downticks from their comments, they also blocked any comments that suggested there were solutions for managing plastic, and a specific absence of any articles regarding same. Including:
      3) The plastic catcher as in 1)
      4) The used of recycled plastic bags in creating resins and plastic for roading.
      5) The same process as in 4) being used in some Nike shoes.
      6) The discovery in Japan that nature created its own evolutionary solution: an enzyme that eats plastic and breaks it down to a usable state. And that enzyme is being developed into a usable product in both the USA and Japan.
      
      It is far more “news” worthy to bleat on about evil plastic bags, than to publish the relatively “bland” story that the plastic problem is going away.

        Even the antivaxxing movement itself is screwed up, and a form of labellism. There is a difference between vaccinations such as polio, measles, tetanus, and vaccinations you need to have to travel, and vaccinations that some people have allergies to, and that have caused death, and permanent conditions, and Anaphylactic Paralysis or shock.
        
        The drug companies do not always get things right, as we know from thalidomide disaster. The labeling of anyone an anti-vaxxer because of allergies or intolerance to vaccines is abominable.
        
        Some people cannot eat peanuts, kiwi-fruit or red peppers without going into anaphylactic shock. But we do not label these people nutjobs or crazy people.
        
        Tolerance of other people, their beliefs, and their values, seems to be in short supply among trolls.

New Zealand First MP Tracey Martin is defending the controversial climate change teaching resource despite her colleagues speaking out against it for telling students to eat less meat.
Martin, Associate Education Minister, posted a video to her Facebook page explaining how eating less meat was a reality for her growing up because her family couldn’t always afford it.
“I’m really not sure what the drama is… I’m really not sure when for many New Zealanders part of having days where you don’t eat meat is a reality because they can’t afford the meat.”

Surely an argument similar to that is when Golriz was nine years old, her parents became refugees by their own choice, had family already here in Auckland – family re-unification – and Immigration’s greatest concern – by Golriz’ recount – was “did they have any fruit with them”?

And even less relevant is when considerable numbers of people develop an imagined past – like supposed colonialism – and allow that to direct their present and indeed future.

I really can’t see what one member of Parliament’s family’s inability to afford meat or not, while she was growing up, has to do with with any assessment of the general wisdom of young New Zealanders to eat meat in their diet now.

  The difference is that now children (and the rest of us) are being “told” by people in “authority” what not to eat.
  Back in the day some of us might not have eaten meat every day – but that was not by choice. Some families could not afford it, but would have chosen a meat based dinner every day if they could.
  Ms Martin needs to lay off the self justification for the CoL campaign to regulate our lives completely right down to what we are allowed to eat.
  Comparing today’s situation with that of the 1950’s/6o’s is lacking in intelligence and suggests a desire to re-write history.
  PS- the historical access to meat, even if it was just a rabbit, is one reason why people don’t like farmers and rural based people.

      It’s the way of China. Remember they let everyone know they were shutting some cities down so people could get out of them. Apparently Chinese with the virus are posting online videos of them escaping the cities still. Now they have given notice that air travel in large groups will stop on Monday. Ebola is natures way of thinning out the population for the survival of humanity in that region. Leave it alone or in fifty years when most of us are dead the African population in particular will have spilled out and taken over the world.
Except for China, Russia and India because I suspect they will have no scruples about culling the invaders at the border.

    Talk to anyone about the difficulty in actually delivering aid in Africa.
    
    The bleating advertisements begging for money never show the reality for the aid workers dealing with what are probably the most corrupt governments and countries on the planet. From what I am aware off I would hate to estimate the fraction of aid that actually gets into the right place at the right time.
    
    Perhaps mentioning that twyford was involved with one may give you a clue of the level of ineptitude bearing in mind that he was at the top of the food chain not the pointy end.

      Correct.
      
      For aid organisations to get permission to work in various areas, they normally have to pay various bribes.
      Then, again, more bribes to dock officials etc handling the arrival of containers (or outright theft).
      
      For an aid convoy to get through various warlord checkpoints, they will typically have to pay “taxes”.
      
      The aid organisations show these on their books as “operating expenses”, “transport expenses” etc. If they disclosed them as what they really are, bribes and extortion, then less people would donate.
      
      So your $1 a day to feed a child ends up with 10-20c actually getting through.

O.M.G.another fab day here in paradise. Went out for a row sat on the paddle-board early this morning, earphones in, tranny held firmly between my legs. Sooo relaxing.
We had a few of the neighbors over for a wine and a beach barbie last night.. That’s always a real hoot. We played a little game where you had to “Name something from your childhood that you don’t see any more”. My partner absolutely cracked everyone up when he said “white dog shit” LOL!!!!

So they were embarrassed and humiliated because Thai Airways told them they were too fat to fit in the business class seats so demanded a full refund…. Then went to a national newspaper to have their identity broadcast to those in the country that weren’t on the flight and missed the memo about their obesity.

We often travel business class with Thai and every ticket I have received has the weight/size restriction listed in the conditions of travel and yes, those three would have sat on the armrests and looked like corks popping out of a bottle.

    SARS was actual fatal in ~10%. And what’s interesting is that the diagnostic platforms based on SARS and MERS are allowing more rapid Dx of 2019 nCOV. I think what should have happened was the public health service worked hard. Even by the low standards of the overall heath industry, they are regarded as useless.

I’ve been trying to think what National did really well during their nine years in government. We keep hearing on social media the bad things eg sold social housing, increased immigration, increased GST, but if Jacinda wants facts, what are good facts for National that swing voters need reminding about?
