“Yay, what a brilliant move. Why should the US stay bogged down in never-ending Middle-East conflicts.”

Trumpistas after Donny assassinates an Iranian general and gets the US deeper into a ME conflict;

“Yay, what a brilliant move. The US needs to stay involved in the Middle-East to defend ourselves against potential threats.”

Far from making Americans safer, killing General Soleimani has endangered American lives. Anybody who doubts this should ask themselves this simple question – do you think there will be more or less Iranians (and Muslims globally) chanting “death to America” (and really meaning it) after this strike?

Trump has created a martyr and given the Iranian people a very valid reason to hate the USA. He has increased the risk to US service-members in the region. He has increased the risk of a terror-attack on US soil. And for extra-credit negative consequences, he has pushed Iran back into full-scale uranium enrichment. It was an utterly stupid, reckless decision made with no thought about the consequences (except perhaps the consequence of pushing impeachment down a headline or two). Typical Orange Donny foreign-policy.

        And on one hand, you say Soleimani deserved it, and on the other it was no good because there are ramifications. Of course there are ramifications Batman, every decision that every person makes everywhere has ramifications of one form or another.
        How many people should Soleimani have been allowed to be involved in killing before you would say the number was too high? Trump has made that decision for America. And taken action. The other laughable thing is the number of people that are whining about instability and ramifications. The ramifications and instability are ENTIRELY caused by Iran. Not by America.         Depends on what is meant by “cultural icons”. It is possible that he is hinting that “cultural” includes the Iranian nuclear reprocessing site; and also referencing that although striking at such structures can be a warcrime, any protections are removed if the cultural site is being used to store munitions (for example) or to conduct military operations from.
        
        I don’t think that Trump is suggesting that the US would bomb Persepolis for example, or a series of mosques.

    Today we are witnessing the consequences of Western interference in Iran.
    
    The US invasion of Iraq was based on a lie – weapons of mass-destruction – and destroyed the best developed ME country – infrastructure, education, health service – and gave rise to ISIS.
    
    So, it’s not surprising many in Iran and Iraq hate what the West has done to their countries.

      Some sort of deal between the various groupings in north-east Syria and the surrounding areas is needed, and maintaining US troops in the area in an attempt to force such an agreement was not working.
      
      It does appear that an accommodation of sorts has been reached between the various parties that appears reasonably equitable and stable – albeit over a relatively short period. And you should recall that according to the various “Mainstream News Media” reporters, the Kurds have been betrayed by every POTUS since Bush 41; they’re still there.
      
      But since it was the Trump administration that took this path you must of course find it to be stupid, counter-productive, and foolish; regardless of the outcome. Because “orange donnie” is soooo stupid you know, couldn’t come up with innovative and workable solutions because orange man bad.
      
      Getting the US out of its ground forces engagement in the ME is almost certainly something to be desired. I’m prepared to see how Trump’s policy works out in practice before deciding on whether it is good or bad. Though compared to Obama’s multiple clusterfuck it would have to be terrible to be worse.

This may have been better under the previous post: “Don’t let the nasties win says Quin”, but it perhaps also raises issues suiting General Debate?

Just a small consideration of “March 15” in terms of Ardern’s image, in Election year and the view that, for example, she may have so utterly failed in terms of raising children up out of poverty, that the image that adorns an Australian silo in Brunswick in Melbourne, does more for her. Certainly it does world-wide, some suggest, which also reflects back in New Zealand unless you analyse exactly what she has achieved.

Will there be tightened security around “March 15”?
Will fully armed police be evident for some period of time, and consequently, will Ardern require more security? Will there be commemorative occasions or restrictions?

If knowing just the name of Grace Millane’s killer could prejudice any court appearances and jurors, what of mass condemnations of the alleged Mosques terrorist, who is yet to stand trial?

(And charged with 51 murders, 40 attempted murders, and engaging in a terrorist act, how many of those acts need he be convicted of to be permanently imprisoned. Does each death need be proven – or justice be done and dignity accorded each victim – so determining how long such a sensitive or perturbing court case need last, or will the man’s own purported evidence – the video he himself arranged of his actions – with police evidence and coroner’s correlations will serve to convict him of sufficient killings as the video apparently shows, and his manifesto, will serve as fully voluntary evidence of at least two years preparations and the premeditation to qualify all the killings and attempted killings as murder and attempted murder?)

In Election year and with other developing world circumstances, how should possible commemorations, or a court case, even its duration, be handled and who, without any conflict of interests, should make any decisions in connection with this matter.

Just wondering.

      Not right actually. You will recall many trials where a few charges have been representative of others. I don’t think the maximum sentence is not altered in this case. On the other hand, perhaps any such decisions should have input from the families.

  There will be a number of good reasons. Most likely he is facing other serious charges, and in these situations name suppression is proper and normal.

    Tony Stuart is right, but there are a fair number of NZers who feel that a summary execution would be justified, and who would feel no compunction whatsoever.

  Issues I have all addressed. They should have simply sectioned Tarrant and removed him under the mental health law. He would never see the world again. Now we are to have a show trial where each charge has to be proved unless Tarrant agrees and pleads guilty. If the prosecutors otherwise withdraw them they will be blasted as not Muslim friendly.
  
  There will be immense disturbance re-visited on the whole of NZ by this avoidable trial.

  It will be an opportunity for additional family members who came here on visitor visas without travel insurance and are now running up significant “unexpected” health costs of their own to claim asylum/residency and access even more costs.

  I hope this is an oversimplification of what she actually said, which would not be at all surprising given the lamentable state of science reporting here and pretty much everywhere else.
  If she’s done any study of the subject then she will know that being” reusable, repurposed and recyclable” does not in itself make a thing better for the environment than a single-use item. It’s better for the environment only if it actually is reused, repurposed and recycled, and even then it depends on the manner of reuse, repurposing and recycling. For example, you’d have to re-use a cotton shopping bag several hundred times to have less environmental impact than using plastic bags the same number of times, and that multiplies if you wash the cotton bag or if you re-use the plastic bag. If the plastic bag is then disposed of properly then the environmental impact of its manufacture, transport, use and eventual disposal is minimal.

      If so I think they’ve made a significant mis-judgement.
      
      Simon Bridges may not have John Key or Jacinda Ardern’s level of personal charm, but on the other hand he doesn’t actively put voters off the way Andrew Little did. The polls back this up – National has held roughly steady under Bridges’ leadership, while Labour went backwards under Little.
      
      Myself I’d rate having Bridges as leader is neutral to National’s chances of being elected. He’s not a particular electoral asset, but not a hindrance either.

        Sometimes the headline difference is reduced because there’s a near automatic minimum $0.06 per litre discount at BP. And about 3 x per week it is $0.10 a litre.
        
        On a recent trip to Auckland and back I was pleased to be able to refuel at Tirau, drive to Auckland, potter around for several days and then get back to Tirau on a tank thus avoid the Auckland add on tax. Of course using 98 Octane puts the price up somewhat…

    Many, many years ago my folks and I were in (amongst other places) Las Vegas.
    
    Both of the the olds fancied them some gambling.
    
    So I, under age by US Gambling regulations, was shunted off to do non-gamblong things – trailbike riding (though, technically, I was too young to drive in the US too!), a descent from the Granad Canyon rim to the distant river, a two-day raft down the Colorado, a tour of the Hoover Dam, mucho swimming etc etc.
    
    And, at night time, an occasional stroll up and down the strip…
    
    My Mum met up with me during one break friom her slot-machining and asked how I was getting on.
    
    ‘Sweet, Mum. The folk here are so FRIENDLY. And, look, quite a few cute young ladies hvae given me their picture cards for me to call anytime. Oh, any chance of a top-up on my allowance?’

    The polling around impeachment is a mixed bag for Trump and Republicans.
    
    On the one hand there isn’t the sort of overwhelming landslide in favor of impeachment that would force removal from office. And in particular Republican opposition to impeachment and/or removal has remained rock-solid, so its highly unlikely Republic senators will break with Trump and vote to remove.
    
    But on the glass half-empty side, the polls also show around half of Americans support impeachment or agree that Trump committed an impeachable offense. Non-partisans aren’t buying the Republican claims this a politically-motivated witch-hunt over nothing. That’s very different from the Bill Clinton situation, and puts us in uncharted waters over how the impeachment trial might affect the election.

      Some law is expected to be applied re Trump. So far the Dems have broken every jurisprudential rule in the book. The Senate could even refuse to accept the impeachment as not being lawfully obtained. Secrecy can nullify proceedings. A Chief Justice presiding would quickly bring them to order.

  Would have been easy to subpoena him to testify in Congress, using the constitutionally approved way of having the courts rule on the claims of executive privilege (you know, like one W J Clinton did).

A stuff article claims – Māori ‘deserve more praise’ and 2020 is the perfect year for it.

OPINION: In 2020, it’s time for all of us to be proud of our Māori heritage and celebrate it.
Why? Because we don’t honour Māori people, their traditions and language enough. Māori cultural practices are interwoven in the many strands of our society, affecting everyone whether we realise it or not. Kiwis generally aren’t very good at celebrating ourselves or making much of a fuss of our success. We’re a humble nation. A trait shared by Māori and non-Māori alike.

But 2020 is special; it’s 180 years since the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and it’s an election year. It’s the perfect time to celebrate Māori and see them for the resilient, resourceful and proud people they are.

I invite you to consider this against the issue of special schooling – partnership schools – which were catering for those Maori and Pacifica students who were failing in the public education system, making partnership schools a taonga to those who benefited from them.
Now the demise of these schools are appealed as a claim to the Waitangi Tribunal.
This though, has happened in the face of Labour having all Maori Special Seats and their being greater Maori and Pacifica representation in Parliament in general, and in particular in its leadership, than ever before.

Has anyone ever even seen a dollar figure for what these schools were in fact costing the country, to compare against some of the well publicised social outcomes that also cost the nation?

Carmen Parahi, who has written the stuff article, says –
Māori deserve more praise than they generally receive. They are an important part of this nation and integral to its identity.
But can Carmen compete with Kelvin Davis –

      The suicide rate for NZ is currently a problem that ardern chose to politicise in 2017 then slam the door shut on any suggestions to lower it.
      
      Since her campaign the rate has risen in all sectors except for European males although how a “maori” is defined is a bit of a mystery to me. What proportion of maori blood do you have to have to be regarded as a maori in the suicide stats.
      
      The thing to remember is that almost twice as many people of all race in NZ die from suicide as they do in road accidents.
      
      Look at how much money is spent on road safety compared to the absolute pittance suicide prevention is given. Mike King is happy now though as he is now part of the government gravy train whereas under the previous Government he was on the outside looking in and so was critical of the lack of targets whereas now he is ok with now targets.

    It’s about making allowances for people’s life circumstances that may be preventing them from succeeding.
    For instance, if a young person has parents with mental health problems/ alcoholism / drug addiction, they probably need extra help from society because their parents are not up to the task.
    Youngsters from cultures that believe children (and their mothers) should be subjected to violent “discipline” are going to need extra assistance, unless we are willing to let them fall by the wayside.

    Stuffy, everyone knows there is a drought. There are *also* arsonists. There are *also* uncontrolled fuel loads that should have been reduced for decades.
    
    The only points of debate are really these: 1. to what extent is this drought caused by humans, 2. to what extent can it be changed by CO2 reduction and 3. how feasible is it for a population of 7 billion humans to significantly reduce CO2 anyway.
    
    Even if you totally convinced everyone here that AGW is real, you still can’t answer questions 2 and 3. Because nobody really knows.

* Outrage on social media after vandals smeared the grounds of a Temuka school with coloured powder paint drew the culprits out within hours.

Arowhenua Māori School principal Bronwyn Te Koeti-James said two primary-aged children from out of town were responsible for breaking into a shed overnight Thursday and slinging the $300 worth of pink, yellow, and blue powder paint found inside about the grounds.

“It was pretty easy to find them because the evidence sticks like crazy,” Te Koeti-James said.

Te Koeti-James discovered the carnage on Friday morning and took to social media to appeal for help. That afternoon, the culprits’ parents brought them over and they got stuck in to helping caretaker Rick James with the clean-up.*

  December 2019 has certainly been quite a lot cooler than average in Canterbury.
  
  In 2010 NIWA told us that the 2000-20009 decade had been warmer than the 1990-1999 decade by a whole 0.01 degrees – that’s 35 degree days. A week like the last week of 2019 would have changed the result for the 2000-2009 decade from warmer to cooler.

A reasonable person would understand that.

PS same applies for ANY country you travel to – not just NZ.

  My wife travels on a Thai passport and has a permanent resident visa that must be renewed whenever she renews her passport.
  Seems simple enough and it has been over the years until last year.
  We arrived back in NZ not knowing what her status was because what we were told when applying for the visa was incorrect.
