        They were spectacularly wrong on Trump/Clinton. They have a lot of winding in to do to reclaim credibility.
        
        The statistically naive often think these “poll of polls” must be more accurate because the bias in one poll will offset the bias in another poll and thus make for a better result.
        
        And then there are those that believe because they are using 10x more data their result must be 10x as good.
        
        Nope, sorry, it all comes down to data quality. Garbage in, garbage out; 10x garbage in, 10x garbage out.

        They (538) were wrong about Clinton/Trump, but more right than others. They gave Clinton around a 70% chance of winning, well below the 90+% that many were giving.
        
        Nate’s quite good, but I’ve always thought not quite as good as Nate himself thinks he is. He is consistently blindsided by not examining his assumptions. I think he’s a Bayesian with typically over-biased priors.

    I have family living in Australia and while many of the issues we are dealing with here are the same issues they have to deal with over there but … whenever I spend time there I find there is a vibrancy among the people that I meet that has long departed New Zealand.
    
    Yes, they have stupid feral fuckwits there but they seem to be in the minority whereas we have them actually running the country .. or trying to.
    
    No one in their right mind would assume that the “media” could sway an electorate in Australia and especially not a entire election yet your comment is actually completely accurate here in NZ.

      They certainly are mounting a strident defense of Peters…..and its not paranoia (I hope 🙂 ) to harbour ideas that they too may be recipients of NZ First Foundations largesse.
      Look how actively promoting Peters at last election against the Nats & Bill English and now Bridges worked out for the former Whaleoil site !

  I turned on ZB in the background, then off after 5 minutes. I’ve just realized I’ve become intolerant of advertising, especially the loud and strident kind.
  I haven’t watched TV in at least 7 years (other than 15 minute bouts while on holiday overseas). I don’t even have a TV aerial at home.
  I read about 1 Herald or Stuff article a month, then wonder why, apart from picking apart the untruths and agendas.
  
  The MSM really don’t get that the world has changed, and repeaters, PR flacks, and opinionators are irrelevant to most of us. Why does anybody (advertisers or readers) still give them money, let alone attention?

  Intuitively most people get this I suspect, though aren’t willing to admit it, including to themselves, given the implications for September. Understandable. It’s also why there was a hopeful perk up when Christopher Luxton provided a whiff of a smell of becoming a contender.

      Canterbury has a lot of influence? Where does that come from? Debbie Hockley for being President? Geoff Allott for being on the Board?
      Greg Barclay (Chair) is ND, Liz Dawson is Auckland, Jackie Lloyd Auckland, Don McKinnon Auckland, Kevin Malloy currently Auckland, Martin Snedden Auckland and Diane Puketapu I believe is Auckland.
      So, Coach and batting coach Canterbury (pretty much just started) Board predominately not from Canterbury. And remember, Hesson wasn’t from Canterbury and the ND senior team members didn’t have a problem with him (or McMillan for that matter). I think you are either clutching at straws or making a conspiracy theory.
      We have a once in a lifetime situation of three players from ND, Kane Williamson, being about the only decent batter that has ever come out of ND and Boult and Southee, pretty much the only decent bowlers to come out of ND, and its a problem because Coaches are from Canterbury?

Heard the Black Caps cricket coach Gary Stead is off on holiday . Seems he and the Black Caps have been on holiday for some time now ,looking at their results.Wonder how their new batting coach two metre Peter is fitting in.Maybe he is also on holiday.
What a team of also rans . Maybe all of them should be replaced . Even giving Gary Stead a DCM . Nuff said.

    No coach need necessarily to have been a great player. Mike Hesson did not even play first-class cricket, I believe, and he has been NZ’s best coach.
    In rugby, Graham Henry and Steve Hansen had modest rugby players careers, before becoming world-beating coaches.

      Agreed mike. Coaching is way different to playing. You can be a batting God, but be totally inept at being able to pass on good advice to other players.
      Fulton’s test career was so stop/start it made it difficult for him to have any confidence that he would remain in the team after a failure or two. And it should be remembered, he was good enough to get two hundreds on one test match.

After 10 days or so he got found much! skinnier than he was… with his terrier. He was asked the question.. At what stage wou you have eaten your lil mate. Answer was never. The Treaty : We have to move into a truth reconciliation stage.
Paul Moon thinks the Treaty has served it’s purpose so now wants a new declaration to keep the gravy train going for Maori and allow them to reclaim Land they believe was stolen.
Recent events at Ihumatoa should disabuse us competently of such thinking, they epitomize a major aspect of the Treaty relationship that the crown has been negligent in addressing.

  Not sure where Paul Moon is going with this one? The fact of the matter is that we have shared this nation the best part of 200 years. We have had many full and final settlements and literally billions of dollars have passed from the hands of taxpayers to Maori interests.
  
  It is time to move on as one people and one nation. There is no treaty partnership and there are no treaty principles that need to inform our legislation or our national life. We are one people with one rule of law for all. And that’s all that anyone can reasonably expect.

    We will not move forward ‘as one nation’ until Maori stop pilloring non-Maori. The shades of apartheid we are experiencing are, it appears, being deliberately driven by activists who will not be happy until everybody speaks Maori, and key parts of our society such as education, the judicial system and – indeed – government are configured to meet Maori requirements. The 80% or so of us who are not Maori are irrelevant.
    I see interracial trouble down the track if something is not done to break the activist line.

    I can’t stand Winston, but I don’t care where / who the actaul donors are. As long as they are public and legal I don’t care how rich the person is.
    
    The issue shouldn’t be about the wealth of the donors it should be around the obvious attempts by Winston and Henry hide the funding sources of NZF. I suspect what they have done meets the letter of the law but certainly not the intent of the law.

Further to the discussion yesterday about Ihumatao, I came across this https://www.heritage.org.nz/news-and-events/news/2019-november-2-otuataua

I note it says the review was initiated as the result of a number of requests, so in other words they didn’t think about it themselves. Also seeing Otuataua was registered in 1991, there has been a lot of time since then to review the status I would have thought.

But you will see that registration does not protect the site. And even if Auckland Council put it on its district plan, well there are lots of examples where development has occurred over things listed in the district plan.

I think Jacinda has seized this as a heaven sent opportunity to justify their actions.

  The Waitangi tribunal findings are not binding – which is interesting, considering the Treaty of Waitangi is the very document that allows the New Zealand government to govern. It is, apparently, powerful enough to establish a government, yet toothless in its recommendations.
  
  Conflating two things. The Waitangi Tribunal is not the Treaty.
  
  The Māori version is fundamentally different to the English version insofar as the Māori version essentially allows for Māori self-determination (tino rangatiratanga) and ultimate authority over things Māori, whereas the English version ceded ultimate authority to Queen Victoria.
  
  I fail to understand how Maori believe they DON’T have sovereignty. Maori are free to pursue anything they want. How ever they seem to want non-Maori to pay for it. That isn’t self determination. That’s subjugation – of non-Maori. That’s the equivalent of believing in Aryan superiority.
  
  In pre Colonial times, at the end of the day, any individual Maori was subject to somebody, their chief. Maori chiefs understood they couldn’t win an all out war against the technological superiority of the British. So the Treaty surely was an attempt to realise the British were here to stay, and maintain the best freedom possible.
  
  Put it this way: which other country that had been colonised by anybody, can you point to as having a superior outcome? India? Pakistan? Indonesia? Algeria? Cambodia? Vietnam?
  
  And lastly, if “truth and reconciliation” is needed, direct it to the perpetrators of the offence: the British. Not the Dutch, or the Chinese, or anyone else. The British.

    The Maori version does not provide for self-determination. Hugh Kawharu’s translation (on the Waitangi Tribunal site) says the following:
    
    Article 1: The Chiefs of the Confederation and all the Chiefs who have not joined that Confederation give absolutely to the Queen of England for ever the complete government over their land.
    
    Article 2: The Queen of England agrees to protect the chiefs, the subtribes and all the people of New Zealand in the unqualified exercise of their chieftainship over their lands, villages and all their treasures …
    
    Article 2 deals with property rights. Article 1 covers everything else government does.

  I read the ‘forget anti-racism’ article. It’s very brief.
  
  Here is the core of the matter: “In the Māori language version the Treaty reaffirms “tino rangatiratanga”, the full powers the tribes were exercising in 1840, including the power to continue structuring their societies and economies.”
  
  Maggy, you know a lot about how Maori tribal societies were structured. From what I’ve read, there was certainly no equality, no basic human rights. And the most powerful people in the strongest tribes got a lot more than anyone else.

      I’m not entirely sure why Maori women’s historical failure/inability to assert themselves as regards Waitangi differentiates them from any women of the period.
      
      One might argue that the only woman who had any say on the day was Queen Victoria, though I suspect she didn’t have much say either.
      
      One could well argue that as a result of joining the Empire Maori women experienced emancipation along with every other women in the empire and by virtue of being Maori and dwelling in NZ they experienced it before any other women in the Empire, or indeed world.
      
      Any failure today to assert their rights in this country rests on their own heads.

      Maggy – the writer doesn’t really say how Maori women were treated prior to 1840? In fact they were living a precarious existence of constant war, the threat of slavery and of course cannibalism.
      
      The Christian missionaries brought enlightened attitudes to Maori society about the role of women. The idea that pre European Maori society was a haven of gender equality is nonsense. It was a fiercely patriarchal society where men ruled. The teachings of Christianity was important to enabling the leading Maori women we see today.

      a) On average one reusable bag has the same amount of plastic as 70 ‘single use’ bags. If you use them less than 70x they are worse for the environment. Also as they are much thicker they take significantly longer to break down.

        The reusable bag also takes longer to break down.
        
        The paper bag however starts to fall apart before you finish using it.

    They had a whole segment on Seven Sharp by Tim Wilson about how people are forgetting to take the “reusable” bags with them into the store and just keep buying more at $1 a pop. Some folks they interviewed on the street have 20 or more at home or the back of the car, and many are turning up in the roadside rubbish collection bins. It was going to happen – anyone could see that – and they are much worse for the environment than single-use bags.

      Paper bags use far more energy and resources to make than plastic bags and do not get a second life for dog turds etc.
      
      When paper bags split, as they often do, this wastes produce – a far bigger issue than worrying about the bag itself.
      
      The only way paper bags win is that they fall apart in water and thus do not cause problems for sealife. Still, that is not a serious issue in NZ – mush more in the various shitholistans that do not have proper rubbish handling.

        – transport to pulping mill
        – pulping (energy, water and chemicals)

        Yes, they can have serious impacts on wildlife, as I already stated, but that is mainly in shitholistans that don’t handle their rubbish properly.

Heard Stuart Nash on Mike Hosking this morning. In his attempts to help NZF he said they were polling around 7-8% and had been for some time.

Hoskings questioned if that was internal polling, why yes it was.

Then Hoskings asked about Green polling, Nash was in trouble as he couldn’t give a low figure so he said about the same (7%). When asked about Labours polling Nash had to put them good too so he said something like 42%. Quick math showed the reported Coalition to be on around 56%. Supposedly National was at mid to high 30s.

These ‘internal poll results’ are totally at odds with EVERY public poll since the last election. Clearly Nash was just making shit up, you could almost hear him thinking through what number to say.

    His point was that NZF got 7% last election and in the poll immediately after they formed a govt with Labour they polled 3%, so in theory 4% of NZF voters last election were potential National voters.

Thoughts for the day. Water.
Our best wishes that people will be safe in Gore/Mataura as they deal with the emergency today.

Meanwhile in most of the North Island and especially rural and provincial areas the lack of water is becoming a real problem. Even in urban areas like Auckland, water is a real problem and highlights how for most of the past 2 decades Auckland’s politicians and bureaucrats have ignored a looming problem. You see, currently, Auckland is short of water reserves, this problem has been created by two factors, these being:
1. A do very little approach; and
2. A doubling of Auckland’s population over the past 25 years and there are forecasts that Auckland’s population will reach 2.2mill by 2040.

The origins of the problem go back to the 1988/89 redrawing of the Auckland and Waikato boundaries with the transfer of one water reservoir in the Hunua Ranges from Auckland to Waikato. This was then compounded by the decision not to build any more dams in the Auckland Ranges. Roll along 1994/95 with a dry summer, that became a prolonged dry period that lasted until May of 1995. Naturally enough, this created a panic as what to do in order to ensure Auckland would not run out of water in the future. Out of this came the least cost “bright idea” of pumping water from the North Waikato River.

This plan has worked, but there were and are environmental costs to the plan and these are now becoming evident to environmentalists and city planners. Indeed the scheme is fragile, makes a large part of the upper North Island vulnerable and is not without costs to the environment. This is because as Auckland draws more and more water from the northern end of the Waikato, the river dries up, so the flow of water from Taupo needs to be maintained and flowed past each of the hydro dams at sufficient rate to ensure water supply for Auckland and not to damage the ecology of the river. In summary, a short sighted plan that needs addressing.

Meanwhile in the north and north west of Auckland, city planners have planned for greater growth , while having a large proportion of the population reliant on private tank supply supplemented with water brought in by tankers. Result equals tanker supplied water in very high demand competing with with local town supplies water systems causing frayed tempers all around.

Reality Auckland’s politicians, bureaucrat planners and Watercare need to do a massive rethink over Auckland’s future water requirements in the north, west and north west.

It’ll be interesting who has the vision and who is prepared to address a real issue with some long term vision.

    A few years ago when our neighbours renovated their house the council made them put in a huge underground water tank to gather excess rainwater – they could use that for gardening surely. In fact I wouldn’t mind one myself apart from the cost of installation.

        We can get more than 1000L a day in Auckland on average from a 330m² roof. Saving about $1300 a year in water charges for cost of about $10k in tanks and pumps for 2 months storage. Pretty good rate of return.

  With respect ‘Hullkiwi’ you have got your ‘water flows’ wrong. Auckland takes water from the LOWER WAIKATO (there is plenty of it and there is an application to take more). This water is taken AFTER it flows through the dams; the take inlet is not far from the sea outlet. (around Tuakau from memory). Water flow above the take point is unaffected and you can bet on it that Meridian fiercely protects their right to river flow through the dams. They successfully contested an application for the irrigation of ex forest farmland below Reporoa which would have taken 10% of the flow.

    Trout, have a read of what I wrote, I wrote that Auckland takes water from the North Waikato (which as far as I know is Tuakau). The principal feed for the river is Lake Taupo. Between Taupo and the North Waikato are Meridian’s dams. I am aware that Meridian regulates the flows of the river at the gates exiting Taupo.
    
    Currently, Auckland is short of water, and Watercare are wanting consent to take more water from the river. This has an impact the length of the river and on the contrary, river levels are currently lower than people would prefer. Remember, the lake and river fills most in 6 to 10 months time. Empty the lake now beyond what is sensible cause problems for the ecology of the river and electricity generation between now and July.
    
    This is concerning all parties involved now!

    No, Hullkiwi is more or less correct. You can’t take too much water from the lower Waikato if there isn’t sufficient flow downstream. You will get saltwater intrusion up the river very quickly.
    
    The point about Reporoa was that the intake would be above almost all the generating capacity and would have significantly reduced flows at critical times downstream. It’s always a balancing act with the demands for generation, the lake level, and the desire for river flow minimums to be considered.

    The Reserve Bank’s seen as definitely putting interest rates on hold after the latest labour market figures from Statistics New Zealand have shown unemployment falling to 4% and annual wage growth hitting 2.6%.
    
    The RBNZ’s making its first interest rate call of the year next week (Wednesday) and the labour market results appear to all but confirm that it will leave the Official Cash Rate unchanged at 1%, where it has been since the 50 basis-point ‘double cut’ in August of last year.
    
    And with the labour market continuing to appear firm, it’s looking increasingly like that there will be no further interest rate cuts this year – although the coronavirus scare and how long-lasting the impact of that might be is a crucial factor.

        rouppe, ordinarily I would agree with you, but ACT and Seymour have a problem. It is the party’s Deputy leader. She is a vote loser and Toxic to ACT’s cause in Rodney (Helensville). She held her seat on the Rodney Local Board last year because there wasn’t another independent candidate to vote for.
        
        Her actions in dealing with her constituents issues (she was the Local Board Chair until she stood down in Nov to fight this year’s general election) is a complete antithesis to the stances of Seymour particularly over free speech.
        Recent instances include:
        1. How she runs a number of local Facebook pages used to disseminate her propoganda. If anyone dares to question her, she and her supporters regularly ban critics or those questioning what she has said. My wife has been banned from 3 Facebook pages by Houlbrooke herself.
        
        2. As Chair of the Local Board she has failed and continues to fail to represent her constituents. Instead she and her supporters on Local Board were party to a rort that convinced Rodney Ratepayers to support a targeted rate under false pretences.
        
        3. In the lead up to last year’s local elections she lied during the campaign to voters in her area (she would be at home in the CoL).
        
        In my view and my views are also shared by my neighnours – we do not like Houlbrooke and we will not be voting for her or ACT and we do not want to see her as one of Rodney’s (Helensville’s) MPs.
        
        So, if anyone (looking at you David Garrett) has any influence with ACT, David Seymour or Sir Alan and Lady Gibbs, please convey these sentiments to them.
        
        IMO, dump Houlbrooke from the ACT list, she is toxic in Rodney(Helensville).

  I am so blessed, I live in a society where we have the rule of law and a reasonably independant judiciary and police force (so far), habeas corpus, the right to free speech (have to defend it though) and association, little corruption and a societal expectation that we will all get along.
  
  We have only one MP in parliament who unashamedly defends our basic freedoms and I am going to give him my party vote later in the year.
  
  Evan though I totally disagree with his euthanasia law and the coming Abortion law which he supports.
  
  The first because there will be “slippage” and vulnerable people will die either by deliberate process or through the cracks.
  
  The latter because there is NO end date prescribed, so that means 1 month out from birth the fetus can be aborted in an easier system.
  
  I believe that we the strong should defend and protect the weak and give them a hand up if we can. because we are the strong.
  
  Our children (all of them) are our treasure, yours mine and everyones.
  That the older and infirm are deserving of what we give ourselves, always have been and always will be.

    Mike, no doctor will perform such a late abortion unless a woman’s life is in danger. It simply can’t happen in NZ. No woman, 7 months pregnant, would persuade any Dr. to perform an abortion just because she wants one.
    
    Nor would any sane woman see or feel any benefit from having such a late abortion! It would be vastly difficult and painful.

      That is so not true. Nearly all abortions in NZ are carried out purely because the woman want one. It is exceptionally rare for a mother’s life to be in danger due to pregnancy and the mental well being rule is stretched to cover “I just wouldn’t be happy if I had this baby”

Jay Selkulow, one of Trump’s lawyers, sums up perfectly. This impeachment is exactly the partisan mess the Founders feared (the first totally partisan impeachment), and it has nothing to do with any crime Trump has committed. As Sekulow points out, those under Trump didn’t like it when he doesn’t follow their advice but the Constitution gives Trump absolute power when it comes to foreign relations. They may not like his stances, but that is too bad.

  Absolute power doesn’t include seeking to rig a domestic election. Otherwise everyone may as well pack up their election campaigns now as Trump gives Russia a green light to make a mockery of democracy in order to make themselves look better.

        Sorry, but ‘abuse of power’ is not an impeachable offense. It just isn’t. All presidents have abused power in that case. The standard, as laid out in the Constitution, is ‘bribery, treason, or other high crimes and misdemeanors’. The House did not allege that any such crime had been committed in the articles they brought forth. None.
        
        The president has authority to investigate corruption, and there was more than sufficient basis to do so in the Ukraine.
        
        Hell, there is more evidence to impeach Obama than Trump. Remember Obama’s “hot mic” quid pro quo moment with the Russian president regarding missile defense?

        If the president was seriously interested in investigating corruption, he would have asked the justice department to do so.

Radio NZ proposes to slash the Concert Programme, with 20 jobs to go, and switch resources into youth programming, featuring NZ music – which will undoubtedly include a large chunk of rap and Maori and Pacific Island talent.

The State-subsidised Radio NZ will thus hive young people off the advertising-financed commercial stations.

There will be four jobs in the new classical music ~~stream~~ dribble, and 13 jobs in a new “youth” channel.

It’s more than purely a redirection from older classical listeners to a younger audience by Radio NZ, which was effectively taken over by Maori in a coup led by Labour’s Wily Willie Jackson.

As MSN reports:

While its [the Concert Programme’s] listenership is predominantly Pakeha and skewed towards older people, the new music brand would target people aged 18 and 34 including Maori and Pasifika audiences, the proposal says.

The ghost of the Concert Programme will linger on with round-the-clock classical music on the AM network – when Parliament isn’t sitting – and on Freeview.

Time to privatise Radio NZ!

* On December 30, Li Wenliang dropped a bombshell in his medical school alumni group on the popular Chinese messaging app WeChat: seven patients from a local seafood market had been diagnosed with a SARS-like illness and quarantined in his hospital.

Li explained that, according to a test he had seen, the illness was a coronavirus — a large family of viruses that includes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
Memories of SARS run deep in China, where a pandemic in 2003 killed hundreds following a government cover up. “I only wanted to remind my university classmates to be careful,” he said.

Soon after he posted the message, Li was accused of rumor-mongering by the Wuhan police. He was one of several medics targeted by police for trying to blow the whistle on the deadly virus in the early weeks of the outbreak. The virus has since claimed at least 425 lives and sickened more than 20,000 people globally — including Li.

From an intensive care bed in hospital, Li told CNN he was confirmed Saturday to have contracted the virus.

Why have global oil prices fallen so much?

The spread of the coronavirus means the Lunar New Year holiday has been extended in much of China and travel restrictions are in place. As a result, factories, offices and shops remain shut.
That means the world’s biggest importer of crude oil, which usually consumes about 14 million barrels a day, needs a lot less oil to power machinery, fuel vehicles, and keep the lights on.*

Wow. What bad luck.

Fancy that, you buy a new vehicle just a week before your wife is due to give birth and bugger me, it is stolen from outside the hospital !

“Their vehicle, which they had only owned for a week, was loaded with baby gear and personal belongings in expectation.”

“Olson said he hadn’t organised insurance for the vehicle when it was stolen and they still had $6000 owing which was going to put an extra strain on their finances.”

I smell a bloody great rat here: get the public to fund a new vehicle plus all the gear needed for a new baby.

Stuff “Air New Zealand turning away customers from Koru Lounge”. Air New Zealand turning away customers from their Auckland lounge because of overcrowding.

After having been warned two years ago that their lounge was too small Air New Zealand finally started construction of a new, larger lounge.

Existing customers are being turned away due to overcrowding.

I traveled enough with Air New Zealand to become a Gold Card member which provided lounge privileges. Got taken to the cleaners too many times with Air New Zealand continually downgrading my existing airpoints so gave up on them and started to fly the best fares instead.

  If I was still a regular flyer Air NZ would be a long way down my list.

      Christ, look at one of our great singers, Kiri, or Jonathan Fa’afetai Lemalu who are regularly featured artists on Concert Fm or Taonga Puoro player Rob Thorne!
      
      A wide spectrum of world music gets a solid airing too, yet somehow the heads of Concert FM dismiss all of this as not being inclusive enough or DIVERSE enough?
