Is this the next step [sic] after “conversations”?
But another headline – Jacinda Ardern has ‘no doubt’ path will cross with Ihumātao protest leader Pania Newton – months of crap with Ardern and Newton at the centre of it, and neither has even met face to face.

Perhaps if Jacinda just had the bloody courtesy to tell Pania what is proposed on Ihumātao, the latter would not be existing on rumours, with Winston having also put his deal-breaking opinion in too – that a solution will not cost taxpayer money, which seems impossible.

Over-shadowed by Waitangi was further comment on the Labour alleged sexual assault.
From the start this issue should have been a police matter, but Labour attempted to handle it themselves – a crashing example of political self interest over natural justice.
Still is.
(When will Ardern apologise publicly for the lack of respect and faith Labour has shown in the Police?)

But the same applies to Ihumātao.
Ardern said the Government will not intervene, but strongly favoured the position of the iwi elders.
Then Ardern proclaimed building will cease and discusses the issue with everyone, except Pania Newton.
No wonder that, in regard to the alleged assault case, a leaked draft investigation shows Labour did not properly communicate with the complainants

“Give us the courage to walk comfortably in each other’s shoes” is obviously just another bloody slogan.

So far with Labour the – truth is, walk a mile in another’s shoes, then shout whatever the hell you want about them – you are a mile away, and you have their shoes.

  Slogans and quips. Something you might expect from someone with no depth. Oh, never mind….
  
  This is more like it:
  
  YOU walk a mile in THEIR shoes, (and keep walking), after forcibly ripping those shoes off THEIR feet, after claiming that THEIR shoes are actually YOUR shoes, because YOUR ancestors once saw those shoes in a shop and thought that how nice it would be to have a pair of shoes like that, but bought shoes elsewhere.
  
  In reality, much of the land “ownership” in NZ, “changed hands” with each new tribal battle. When white settlers purchased the land they did so by transactions, not by beheading the previous “land owners”.

    It has become very noticeable that Ardern has been so wrapped up with making the most of all of the photo opportunities at Waitangi, that she has not noticed the huge problem hundreds of Southlander are facing after their devastating floods.
    Has she decided not show concern, offer help etc as she doesn’t think there would be many votes in it for her?
    Surely she has missed a 4th great photo opportunity as Neve bailing floodwater into a bucket using an eggcup might possibly be worth a vote or two!
    With not a sound from our p.m. I send my best wishes to the Southlanders affected and hope they can restore their lives properties etc as soon as possible.

      She did say she would not return to the South Island until there was a disaster like the Mosque shooting.
      
      She has a communications degree so it all about winning the election.
      
      Its also a matter of ratings. The SI got diddly squat in the latest Roads budget, and she will not sink money or time into areas where she can’t move voters from National to Labour.
      
      The exception being the west cost and the bottomless pit called Pike River. That is about maintaining Labour votes and not letting the votes go to National, after Stuart sorry Andrew Little, failed to protect the miners as part of his remunerated job with the union.

Stuff has a story by British lawyer and cricket writer Tasneem-Summer Khan about incompetent security staff at the Bay Oval.
Stuff illustrated it with a picture of Ms Khan as a blindingly white long-lashed Lolita. A minute’s digging showed that this is a standard internet meme, the picture she uses as her Twitter avatar.
Even the teenagers who seem to have replaced subeditors at the mainstream media might have known enough about the internet to know better. But not at Stuff, apparently.

  You write a big rant about the photo of a woman and how she looks, you sound jealous. And she is right the security guards at these events are arrogant nobodies who think they are somebodies attacking innocent people enjoying their day out.

        He’s not attacking her for how she looks, which would indeed be illegitimate, irrelevant and unfair. He’s not attacking her at all. He’s attacking Stuff for its use of the photograph, which is of no relevance, in fact it detracts from, the well written and serious article.
        
        However, I don’t agree that the journalist can’t legitimately be attacked for her choice of picture. That was her choice, her decision, and people’s own freely made decisions are completely legit subjects for comment and criticism, unlike for example their skin colour or their parentage. In this case, I think it is a very strange and incoherent choice of picture for a woman who clearly wants and expects to be taken seriously and treated with respect as an adult and a professional.

        Of course she can use a picture of a white skinned woman, even if she herself is brown-skinned (or vice versa). The problem is that readers see an illustration which infers that the writer is indeed the person illustrated.
        If used in a news providing context, it is dishonest.

  I’m not bothered about the choice of photo used. If the writer doesn’t like it she should get it taken down.
  What annoys me more is the random unprofessional arrogance directed at paying customers.
  If I go to a public event and pay quite a considerable tarrif to get through the gate/door, I expect to be treated with some respect.
  I would have thought NZ Cricket could do with all the support it can get just now, but I wouldn’t be paying to go to a game to be insulted by bully boys over nothing.

  I was at that game. In the family / No alcohol section. The only people I saw being asked to move from the area was a group of white guys who had missed the no alcohol signs. The Indian supporters behind me seemed to be having a great day out, and didn’t cause issues, and didn’t have any problems with the security.
  I did see (in another section) one chap being taken off by the cops, but he could barely stand and we weren’t even half way through India’s innings,.

Everytime daily on Newstalk ZB advertising with saturation coverage is some kind of guru pumping out the benefits of their overpriced cleaning products. Conclusion seems to be there must be massive profits in promoting such an ordinary product. They must be creaming it and so must Newstalkzb with the type of saturation coverage .
Maybe some day the Consumer Institute will do some tests on the type of product and so called benefits that is promoted way ahead of much cheaper superior or comparable type of property cleaners. Wonder why there is sometimes an extra charge of around $60 extra for similar type of ingredient found in other products. Perhaps the extra pays for advertising. What a cunning plan,for the consumer to pay for the promotion. .

  Oldpark, at the risk of insulting some keen homeowners here I’ll give a younger persons take…
  
  The audience of ZB is, unsurprisingly, slightly older and slightly whiter than other stations (with the exception of Concert FM perhaps).
  
  That audience tend to be home owners, probably one with a decent outdoors area.
  
  They’re also possibly semi-retired and tend to listen to the radio more than other age groups.
  
  They’re keen on keeping their property weirdly clean and tidy because A) they’ve got spare time and B) the house is their nest egg.
  
  Thus, wet and forget do very well out of their ZB ad campaigns ?

  After reading the article,two pointsstand out.
  The gent spoken to by the security guard was in possession of a hip flask that may have contained alcohol. This alone is a breach of the alcohol ban and would have constituted legitimate grounds to eject the gent from the event.
  Secondly addressing someone as honey is not offensive or sufficient to warrant taking further action.
  The article is just one side of the story, a report from the security guard and his supervisor would assist clarification.
  It does appear that the complainant injected herself into a situation, impeeding the security guard in his/ her duty and may have inflamed the situation by being argumentative and disruptive.This also would have been reasonable grounds to eject her from the venue.

      You are a highly educated and paid professional lawyer, Doctor, writer, or engineer etc.
      You see someone (who has actually bought a ticket to attend) being treated by an employee in a manner that leaves something to be desired.
      You chip in with a comment and the “official” wearing the orange vest says to you “Look, Sonny, butt out or you’ll be next”.

  From any justice point of view, the complaints are yet to be dealt with. Given the delay, it should be out of the hands of Labour and referred to the proper authorities.
  
  The fact that one of the complainants has scored herself a nice job / position in the Labour party, points to a pay off to keep quiet. It appears bribery is alive and well.

    Can someone who actually knows confirm that, being a criminal complaint, this matter should have been investigated by the police to determine whether any one should face court, with the court or justice system being the only agency, apart from a military court marshal, able to judge a criminal case in New Zealand. Should not consideration be given to the process the Labour Party pursued is in fact perverting the course of justice or obstruction of justice?

      A transparent and honest government would insist on processes being transparent and honest.
      
      It is all covered in the Crimes Act.

      It is up to the complainant to start the ball rolling. Say one young adult gives another a black eye, it not automatically a police matter unless a complaint of assault is made.
      
      However any ruling body has to be very careful to avoid conflict of interest and NOT divert the course of justice. This is all part of being transparent.
      
      The example with kids above, say the attacker was part of a govt authority, charged with the upholding of the law. If the victim complains, the authority is duty bound to report it. Any mention or suggestion to the victim of not complaining, is a conflict of interest and a breach.
      
      In fact some organisations insist that a formal complaint be made, to protect the victim and ensure there are no conflicts of interest. This not only about protecting the victim but protecting the integrity of the organisation. That is why ordinary police do not investigate police, instead having dedicated internal investigators.
      
      Nigel Haworth, by resigning, shows he understands more about accountability and transparency than Jacinda does.

Safari Club International is auctioning off a week-long trophy hunt with President Donald Trump’s son through Alaska as part of its annual convention in Reno, Nevada, set to take place Wednesday through Saturday. Trump Jr. is the event’s keynote speaker.

Other hunts up for auction start bidding at up to $27,500 for a two-week leopard hunt in Tanzania.

Trump Jr. has been criticized for hunting endangered and vulnerable trophy animals, including the Mongolian mountain sheep, or argali, and an African elephant. In 2012, photographs surfaced showing Trump Jr. holding an elephant tail.

Animal rights activists and conservationists called the event “senseless.”

  The animals targeted by this hunting are almost exclusive either:
  1) Animals that are not endangered at all, but are at pest levels. For example, elephants in Zimbabwe.
  2) Animals beyond breeding age and are of non consequence to keeping the species alive.
  
  Hunting is one of the major ways these countries fund their conservation efforts.

      I was using Zimabwe as an example and now you’re citing Kenya. What is rare in one place might be a plague in another. The trick is to allow the hunting where it provides the best benefits.
      
      Kenya to Zim is about the same distance as Australia to NZ. Possum shooting in NZ is fully good, not so much in AUstralia.
      
      In Zimbabwe (let’s just focus on that for a moment), there are approx 2x as many elephants as the land can carry and they need a massive number of those thinned out (something like 20,000) . The Zim game department (as with the rest of Zim) is a mess and they cannot afford to do it.
      
      These animals kill many people. They also trash the habitat for other animals as well as destroy crops.
      
      Bring in the hunters, who are only allowed very specific animals and they help out. Money and meat goes into starving communities.
      
      Kenya is different because all those Somalians etc poach in Kenya to fund their global terror. The elephant population is far lower there.
      
      And almost all that “myth busting” is bullshit. For example:
      3% of the money goes into the community and the whopping 97% goes to the government, outfitters etc. Well, firstly, the communities generally get the meat too. The government gets money which it can then spend on infrastructure and running their game reserved. Those provide services to, and employ the community. Same deal for outfitters & professional hunters. They employ locals.
      
      Many hunters also build long-lasting relationships with the communities in areas that they hunt. There’s some Kiwi guy who has helped fund schools etc.
      
      And just for the record I have no interest in trophy hunting myself.

      I have to admire Stephieboys broad expertise on every topic from Climate Change to virii and now conservation. I wonder if google did not exist how well he would do? I was educated before the internet, so although I do use google now, (especially to read scientific journals) most of my understanding of the topics I post on came from good old fashioned studying.

        It is ironic that Stephie objects to man hunting surplus animals in Africa, especially when they are a food source and in some cases pests, but totally OK with the Maoris hunting the Moa to extinction, and the Tahitian Maoris hunting the Morioris to almost extinction.
        
        His left hand is OK with crime but his right is not, all depending on which side of the argument he is on. Whatever side of the argument he is on, he is right and has to find something on Google to prove it. His left hand and right hand are probably at war most of the time, like a virtual Punch and Judy show.
        
        Stephie is an example of someone who knows how to Google, but understands nothing, because be lacks the ability to discern right from wrong and has no first principles on which to base reason.

    Nobody is just Maori anymore and I know plenty of people who are part Maori but see themselves more as individuals with many aspects.

Have any other KBers who keep an eye on their Flightradar24 program noticed the preponderance of private jets that have been operating in NZ skies over the last couple of weeks? I would normally see a couple a week but in recent times have spotted up to ten movements a day. As I write this post two Gulfstreams have departed Auckland headed towards Australia and Asia. Is high-end tourism really booming, are they here on corporate or government business, are VIPs relocating here from China because of the Wuhan virus? Whatever, it is good to see this activity in our skies.

Why is it ok when Winston Peters says he will abolish the Maori seat the punter flocks to his Party and help him be the scourge of NZ Politics. Then when Simon Bridges says and added the Waitangi Tribunal to the list of what he eventually thinks NZ er’s should do away with at Waitangi this week the hypocrites come out to criticize. He said that he and his Party believed Maori electorate seats should eventually should go, Bridges cited the Royal Commission in 1986 which proposed that if NZ adopted MMP System it should abolish the Maori Seats.

A case of nobody does hypocrisy better than Team CoL.

Part of the $12bn, included $360m for SkyPath/SeaPath. SeaPath is $200m for a cycle path from the Harbour Bridge to Takapuna. Now it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to observe (as you drive from Takapuna to the Bridge) that SeaPath is going to do a massive amount of environmental and ecological damage to the flora and habitats of the fauna along the route of the path.

I wonder what the views of the Greens are as to the environmental damage that will be done, given their advocacy of cycling, which in this instance has costs that far exceed benefits?

As we often say, no one does hypocrisy better than the Greens, Labour and the CoL!

Hullkiwi: Time will tell about your prediction that SeaPath will negatively impact the environment, but here is an extract from an NZTA website which indicates that the planners have done some homework, and it is assumed that SeaPath will be built in a such a way as to preserve the flora/fauna of the area:

“SeaPath is located in a significant cultural and ecological environment. Shoal Bay and the surrounding area has many important ecological, cultural and historical values and characteristics. Shoal Bay is a natural heritage location of regional significance and is home to extensive mangroves and saltmarshes. It is also a key feeding and roosting area for migratory and coastal wading bird species including Oystercatchers, Caspian tern and New Zealand Dotterel.”

  The middle aged British man who contracted coronavirus while visiting Singapore is troubling as it suggests that the virus is on the lose and spreading in Singapore. I note too, that Singapore has the largest number of cases outside of China after Japan.

Northshore, yes. Full marks to NZTA for stating the blindingly obvious, but short of building an arched bridge from Esdmond Road over Shoal Bay to the Bridge, construction of SeaPath is not going to do the Shoal Bay environment any favours. The plans I’ve seen for SeaPath is right through the mangroves. The construction of which is not going to be very environmentally friendly or leave the ecology of the area untouched. As I see it, the fine words you find on the NZTA website do not reconcile with SeaPath.

Watching the Environment and RMA consent processes will provide a great deal of entertainment I suspect.

    A flood plain is pretty self explanatory.
    Many towns in NZ are built near rivers and sooner or later will be subjected to flooding.
    Every years somewhere or other a river floods and dwellings are inundated, road damaged, bridges swept away or train tracks destroyed.
    Way back towns were founded near rivers for navigation, water supply etc

    If you are a studious sort of person and maybe decided to study some of the stuff you like to comment on, you would know the fluvial geographers refer to things such as 10 yr, hundred year and 1000 year flood events. I won’t go in to the detail but it explains how rivers work and that the major flood plains are caved out during the larger flood events and that rivers during lower periods of rainfall tend to meander through these larger flood plains. Elementary 1st Year Geography. So yes, anyone building a house in a flood plain deserves everything they get.

hullkiwi: do the plans you have seen put the walkway through the mangroves or over the mangroves? Big difference!
I do remember a few years ago when the motorway overpass connection from Onewa Road onto the motorway was rebuilt, it was carefully designed to preserve the habitat of a group of these birds who use the area for nesting, so I am withholding judgement as I think NZTA will be cautious. After all, they have allocated themselves a massive budget for the project!

  Not only did we pay for his incarceration, but for multiple brain operations as a direct result.

      If they drive on the roads, they need to know the road code, know how to drive, including on the left side of the road and the most obvious one, be able to read the road signs. In addition know that driving as far as possible to the left, allows trailing cars to read the road ahead and find a safe space to pass said motorist who either refuses to pull over or go more than 60kph in their oversize wandering van.
      
      If overseas, and can’t read the road signs because of not being able to read the road signs in different language, I either allow someone from the country to drive, or drive with GPS and someone from the country. Getting confused at an intersection and trying to make last second choices is not good driving.
      
      On multiple occasions in NZ I have seen tourists drive the wrong way down one way streets, or in the lane going the wrong way, or move into the opposite in the path of oncoming vehicles because the GPS said “veer right”.
      
      And then you get the ones that are nervous or taking it slow, like 60kph in 100kph zones, where there are no passing lanes or ability to pass, and who won’t pull over. Than then prompts some gunho youngster or idiot NZ driver somewhere in a long trailing queue to pass on a blind corner.
      
      Driving in a foreign country is a responsibility, not a right. The sooner standards are enforced, the sooner our roads will be a little safer.

The ‘Waitangi experience’ was something of a PR disaster for Bridges.
He needs to learn the lessons quickly. There won’t be many second chances this year.
1) Get some quality help in preparing for these events. Prepare long and hard and make sure you have support on the ground.
2) You have 4 other parties who are aligned against you. Don’t expect fair treatment – they live to bring you down.
3) Similarly the media, this year in particular, will not give you a ‘fair go’. They live for ‘gaffes’ – National’s in particular. They fear a swing to the right.
4) Have a clear summary of Government failures. Housing, poverty, homelessness, health, education have all deteriorated despite the increased tax take. Provide verifiable numbers. Hammer them home. No more that 3 at a time. No more than 15 seconds. At this stage you don’t need to spell out your solutions – having the interviewer ask what you would do is enough – they have accepted your facts.
5) Return to 1). Get some good advice. Prepare, prepare, prepare.
6) Be confident but not smug. You lead the largest party. National’s polling is very strong. With a good campaign you will be Prime Minister.

  You are dealing with a Labour government that is expedient and that less management experience than Basil Fawlty. Talking groups are often convened for matters that a good board or CEO would decide on in a week, and that farmers and small successful business owners would make a decision on in days.
