Student loan borrower Kelly Righton is sad, stressed and heartbroken at paying ‘huge’ interest on her student loan because of being overseas ‘living a better dream’ working on superyachts after 5 years of tertiary study for a diploma and a degree.

One might think that a person with 5 years of tertiary education behind them might have done a few sums before making a ‘better dream’ decision.

Sympathy = zip.

  A big problem here is Robbo, to help shore up Labour’s election chances, may promise to write off outstanding student loans but would not care less about students who did the right thing and paid off their loans (defaulters are probably more inclined to vote Labour/ Green than National).

    Peterwn…I’m not sure that would be a winner with NZ based voters. Most massive debt borrowers are based overseas so why should NZ tax payers right off their loans.
    
    The better policy would be a halt of interest payments on return to NZ with no more interest or penalties compounding. With the debt amortized over a very long term. Better to get some money than none, and have these NZers return home with their capital and experience.

      I pay 3.39% on one of my morgages. I beleive the government is borrowing at 1.5%.
      
      If the interest rate on student loans was lower I believe there would be fewer defaults.
      
      If the government made an offer to greatly reduce the interest owed but not the principle then then they would recover a lot of the debt.

      Interest already halts upon reestablishing tax residence and abode back in New Zealand. The lack of appeal coming back to NZ is minor.
      
      As others have suggested, dropping the interest rates is a feasible idea in order to improve repayment rates.
      
      It is very easy to set up a myIR account and keep track of the payment owning the due dates. They’re very clear when you log in, so the ambiguity is close to nil.

  We paid off our son’s student loan as he was overseas and the interest was higher than what we could get in the bank.
  
  Naturally we don’t expect to get anything back if Labour decides to erase/forgive those student loans still active.
  
  Even if Labour did so, it would be worth it to me if that helps get rid of them.

esterday’s first post was labelled “The one honest Republican Senator” prraising Mitt Romney. He might have made a decision that DPF agreed with so praised, as is his perogative as blog owner, but I don’t think Mr Romney is someone to be held up as an example of probity. He is certainly not the knight on a white charger as the Never Trumpers have annointed him. He is as corrupt as many, if not most, of the other members of the US Legislature with a lot of unscrupulous behaviour and dodgy deals in his bulging skeleton closets.
Mr Romney made his fortune as part of Bain Capital, which specialised in leveraged buyouts and the forcing the high debts on companies to make them sack staff to pay back the loans that were never theirs to start with. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/greed-and-debt-the-true-story-of-mitt-romney-and-bain-capital-183291/. He did a lot of this while Governor of Massachusetts (2003 to 2007). He only became a senator for another state in 2018 after a failure 24 years before, so not up for re-election until 2024. He had a more posher upbringing than Trump and note he also avoided military service in Vietnam.

Trump may be an arrogant narcissist, but he doesn’t come out the worse personality in comparison with “honest” Mitt Romney. History won’t see Trump as a great or even a good President, just one of the better choices of a lot of very bad options available.

  Mitt publicly accused Trump of calling neo-nazis “very fine people”, even though Trump said in the exact same speech, “I’m not talking about neo-nazis and white supremacists because they should be condemned totally.”
  
  He called for Trump to publicly apologise. If he made an genuine mistake here, then if he was honest, he would place that commitment on himself as well, but that public apology is nowhere.
  
  Also, he has been on every side of every major issue throughout his career, from abortion to the 2nd amendment.

  There is a big difference, when you vote for Sinn Fein you know what you are getting. With labour, all you got were broken promises and in fact I’m not so sure these “promises” were actually “broken” as such because they never intended to implement them.
  
  The whole 2017 campaign was little more than a series of lies and photo ops for ardern.
  
  This election will be remembered for a recycling of the same lies but this time the “photo ops” will include a child.

I wonder how long it will take before Goff and Labour blame the National Party for Emails recieved over a 12year period have been offered with a$20,000 price tag which apparently appear to contain deeply personal alongside Council and Parliamentary work.
The seller claims to have more than 15,000 emails from the Xtra account in Goffs name with a data base spanning from 2007-2019.

    You are spot on Mikey. Stealing emails – regardless of what they contain – is something that we should abhor regardless of which side of the political fence you sit on.
    It was a disgraceful episode when WOils email we’re hacked – I have little time for that person – but I think the hack was the start of the end for him.
    Just as much as we want political dirt to discredit a political opponent – this is not the way.

    I agree, e mail hacking is criminal and not on, but, if it reveals criminal behaviour, then does that trump the crime of hacking? Do you also object to ISIS e mails being hacked? What about the IRAs? You don’t like Trump, so are is fair game?. Not a black and while issue here. Goff is potentially being criminal in requesting that e mails be done is a way to prevent OIA requests?

One more comment about Mitt Romney voting to convict the president and remove him from office.
Tucker Carlson and Mark Steyn on Fox said that Mitt Romney was the reason we got Donald Trump elected Pres.

Romney was called all the names when he ran for Pres in 2012. He was called a racist, a bully, a cruel corporate raider, just like Trump has been called.

But Romney never pushed back, never called out the media, never stood up to the taunts of the pc crowd. As a consequence he lost an election he could have won. But instead they got 4 more years of Obama.

So the Republican electorate turned against him and went to Trump. Because Trump does push back, Trump does fight. They Republican voters wanted that.

Romney is everything the voters rejected in 2016. Trump fights for them. Romney didn’t. Trump has the virtue of courage. He stands up and fights the pc crowd and fights for the forgotten workers of the USA. Romney wouldn’t know who those forgotten workers were.

Auckland Airport has clammed up on latest runway failure – surely airlines, passengers and shareholders deserve a proper explanation. One instance could be excused as a misfortune but twice is carelessness. Auckland airport is quick to issue ‘puff piece’ statements to NZX when a new airline starts flying into Auckland etc. So they ought to be making an explanation to NZX, and NZX should be asking for a ‘please explain’. A senior management head rolled in Telecom (as it then was) when the Palmerston North phone exchange fell over some years ago so it seems a head should roll here.
Perhaps the airport company has clammed up to avoid the possibility of lawsuits on the grounds of negligence.
I do not believe the Board or CEO were directly responsible by denying funding so the onus is in the senior manager responsible for aerodrome maintenance. The manager either misjudged or did not pay proper attention so should either receive a rocket or be given the boot. If the culture was rotten or the manager had undue difficulty obtaining funds for proper maintenance, that is a problem for the CEO and the Board (especially the audit and risk committee).
All in all an inconvenient management/ governance failure that should not have happened. I may ask awkward questions at the next Company AGM.

  Some years ago it was widely reported that there had been “yet another’ security breach with Xtra emails. Many people stopped using Xtra because of these breaches. The big question is are Phil Goff’s hacked emails before or after that time – did he continue using Xtra knowing it wasn’t secure?

    The issue is whether Xtra leaked, whether he had a useless password or whether too many staffers knew the password meaning a chance of leak. I would not be in too much of a hurry to blame Spark as Spark would be very security conscious and because Xtra is valuable to Spark, so Spark has an incentive to protect Xtra’s reputation.

      I wasn’t blaming Spark, just questioning Phil Goff’s email practices. If – I said IF -he does happen to have a useless password and any staffers knowing the password (as you suggest) that would only add to my questioning of his email practices. For example, unlike Phil Goff my email doesn’t have anything that would be of interest to political opponents, and even I have a strong password and I don’t share my password with anybody.

Hmm, if this guy is right Climate alarmists have a major problem. In theory he could be as CO2 has always followed tempertaure in the last 3 million years, but generally over the last 540 mil years there is no correlation with CO2 at all. A large number of scientists argue that atmospheric temperature is mostly governed by pressure, and that variations on small scales are due to solar changes, orbital forcing, cloudiness changes and volcanic eruptions. CO2 is very much a small player in all of this.

      Also, calculating a specific statistic in his processing and using it when it supports his argument but omitting it when it shows that the reconstruction lacked statistical validity for the majority of the period.
      
      That is outright academic fraud.
      
      Might also point out that using data upside down and against the interpretation of collector should also be disqualifying. Lake varves (sediment records) where thicker was deduced to indicate colder weather (higher snowfall hence more meltwater) was used so that thicker was interpreted as warmer – because that matched with his theory.
      
      Mann is a disgrace to the profession.

    Mark Steyn recently won a court case against Mann, currently being appealled. Mann sued Steyn for Defamation (fraudster), and lost. Same again for Tim Ball.
    Twice (at least) courts have agreed Mann’s hockey stick is fraudulent.

R v Pay sentencing for murder (which had to be adjourned when the accused made a dig fuss in the dock). The worrying thing was he was not given a ‘first strike’ warning when earlier convicted. This is vital – suppose the offender seriously assaults a prison officer or prisoner while awaiting sentencing.
There could be merit in amending the ‘strike’ law so the ‘strike’ is given when the accused is charged with a ‘strike’ crime. The ‘strike’ would be removed if the accused is acquitted. This would give better protection for prison staff and other prisoners or to the public if on bail.

      The Antarctic Peninsula is a 2200km skinny bit of land that sticks out into the sea. – just 1000 km from S.America. Clearly very different from the bulk of Antarctica. It has flowering plants.
      
      Esperanza Base is actually closer to South America than it is to the main body of Antarctica.
      
      Antarctica is variable.
      
      The vast bulk of Antarctica is covered in thick ice sheets – up to 3km thick in places. That is going nowhere even if you use an SUV to drive to work on Monday..

        so 14 Mil km2 gets covered by 57 stations, thats about 1 per 250,00km2. and most of these are on the coast….

Should such a situation happen – that voters are given such a specific pledge that National will not form a Government with New Zealand First, but then does, even if it involves changing Leader to do it – what recourse do voters have?
Could there be such a case as a judicial review or a mechanism that declares the Election invalid and requires another Election be held?

        Then let the individual choose what bracket they want – for life!
        
        In other words – if you pay less INCOME tax you get less benefits, if you pay more INCOME tax then you get more benefits.

We bought a rural property years back (in Clarke’s days) when the neighbour decided to subdivide, leaving 2 acres next door available. Without hesitation we purchased this land because of not trusting what may inhabit it in the future . . . glad we did because we now have guaranteed privacy and no chance of state leeches as neighbours and the value has increased exponentially.

      Of course the definition of the budget is that it commits funds for the next 12 months only, anything further out is forecast.

  They stopped the programme when two children died. I would do the same. The best way to reduce deaths is to improve sanitation and general health service so that when people get diseases they don’t die from them. Not one person died of measles in NZ because we have proper systems in place to ensure good health in the population, particularly children. We should be assisting with expertise and investment to improve general sanitation and health services in the islands. Throwing cash around like confetti is useless.

  Some bollocks though about GPS “spewing radio interference across the spectrum”. GPS is reasonably narrow band (20MHz). Hardly across the spectrum.
  
  Nobody wants to spew RF because it wastes your signal power. Far better to keep all your transmission inband where it can be used. This is especially true of GPS-like signals which are incredibly weak and are way below the noise floor (ie. much less than the “hiss” you hear on the radio).

    My gay female friends had as teenagers & young adults been in heterosexual relationships (one had married, and some years later separated)… one day, both in their 40s met…and they’ve been together ever since (20+ years).
    
    Two other females that I first knew separately, ended up living together, one had previously had boyfriends, the other had always been gay.
    
    A few years into their relationship
    one went off with a male colleague and sometime later the other ended up happily married to a chap she met at a conference.

  Violence is a broad concept. I don’t beat my kids and don’t accept physical violence outside self defence. As a Christian I see too much violence in the world and not enough tolerance.
  
  Violence is both rapid and forceful in application. Torture is the slow form. What about “violence” to principles and livelihoods through misapplied politics? Cancelling Taranaki development is the political form which may be very harmful to many.
  Violence may be inferred in jest but that is in the mind of the reader and may be indirectly illustrative of a bad situation not of an actual physical kind.
  
  We need to be careful that we don’t go down the pussy track where nothing is acceptable because someone might be “offended”, bruised within their inner selves so that their toe nails cease growing.
  Loss of freedom of thought or its expression is the gateway to tyranny. There is always someone out their with a bigger mouthpiece waiting their opportunity at your expense.

    There is nothing wrong with violence – as long as it is legal. The police and army are violent. Sometimes the public are legally violent also – helping someone from being beaten further for example. Violence solves problems; Nuking Japan is seen as being responsible, while leveling Dresden is seen as being a little over the top.
    
    Police can shoot someone at the first opportunity if they have a knife waved at them and are in a confined space. Wave a knife around 10 feet away in an open space and they won’t shoot you. There are good reasons to be violent and good reasons not to be.

  There is no hope of this virus being controlled forever, especially as well people can be carriers. The best that can be achieved is to delay sufficiently so it can be included in the winter flu vaccines so resistance can be achieved in the broader population. I doubt this will happen for the southern hemisphere vaccines for 2020 which would be under manufacture already.
  
  It’s been reported older people are more vulnerable and children less so. That would make it the ideal Baby Boomer population control, which is very, very scary.

  I am 100% convinced that CO2 can have a massive impact on an atmosphere – for example Mars and Venus where it is way over 90%.
  
  But 400ppm is less than half a part per thousand. Less than half a teaspoon in a standard 9 litre bucket.

    Mars has about 95% CO2 and has a temp of about -80Deg C. Venus is mostly about atmospheric pressure. I actually agree that CO2 does have an effect in that changes the height at which IR is lost to space, but it does not have the affect the Alarmists claim. It also affects the way H2O absorbs and re- radiates heat. Else it would have been much hotter when it was 8000 ppm 540 mil years ago, and the temp was almost the same then as present. Patrick Moore has some good stuff on this on Youtube

      So you don’t seem to understand or acknowledge that the last half a million years (although that sounds like a big number) is actually a blip in geological time when for most of the last 540 million years CO2 levels have been way higher up to 8000ppm. That is significantly higher than the mere 400 ppm at the moment which is also only about 200 ppm higher than the exinction level for green plants. And temperatures during these much higher concentrations were basically the same as the present as the main control on temperature is pressure. So doubling or tripling CO2 at the moment will only make green plants happier, and the temperature will hardly change.

    That is another reason why alarmists have this all wrong 70% of the so called Greenhouse affect is through H2O. CO2 if one accepts the current GHG theory is about 30%. CO2 is in any way saturated at the 15micron band and the only way it will increase temp is in the “wings” and that is on a diminishing logarithmic scale. Even many alarmists accept this. Lets assume CO2 will increase Temp. It will be about 0.06deg per decade, and the increased forcing will probably be nullified by other factors such as cloudiness or increased absorption by plants. No one really knows. But if temperatures 540 mil years ago with concentrations of 8000ppm were ok, we can put a whole lot of CO2 into the atmosphere with no real effect

The first 50-over game was won by NZ, who achieved a record chasing score far beyond their recent performances.
This 2nd game tonight is much more representative of the 2 teams.
