    I’m starting to think a Visa for Australia isn’t necessarily a problem. They could be issued for ten years and might just stop the endless backdoor immigration to NZ to go on to Australia… After we have incurred all the costs of settling people into western ways.

There seems to have been an unusually large number of people killed and injured by guns in the last few weeks. The problem seems to have become worse since Cindy was supposed to have collected up all the illegal guns.

  Anecdotally, I think we’re seeing a rise in criminals using firearms to expedite their crimes.

  It is weird, its like we have somehow normalised that fact that there are heaps of guns around.
  
  … and the government has convinced us that all gun owners are eeeevillll!
  
  My view is that incentives matter. Now that the Government has made “owning” a gun more criminal than using it, you might as well run with it, and live up to the new normal.
  
  I guess this is what is called “unexpectedly”?

I note and as expected that Robertson will use the Virus to his advantage to blame the fall in our economy right up to the election and more probable as the media will support his and Arden’s PR views.
Like the fact that we were in a recession before anybody else under the previous Labour Government.
The Coronovirus will be used as a sideissue and probably very successfully.
Blame somebody else.

A friend’s wife is supposed to be coming back from 2 months in China. My mate rang the coronavirus help line and asked what to do. He was told she needs to be kept in isolation for 14 days. He told them this wouldnt really work as they only have 1 bathroom which they will need to share, to which the reply was sanitise it regularly. Then they suggested that he and his 2 kids stay in a hotel. He got a quote at $2800 in Wellington. So the suggestion was to call WINZ for financial assistance. He did this and the offer was $87 per week or stay in a holiday camp. He said no as he has 2 young kids.
Doesnt seem to be much effort from the government to help protect the community from somebody returning from Guangzhou does there? If by chance she was infected it could be passed through to the kid’s schools and my mate’s workplace just like that.

      You’re being dramatic. More than likely the majority of NZ houses only have 1 bathroom. We are talking about self-isolation. Not those infected with the disease and the instructions about that are fairly straight forward in terms of self-isolation.

  The government has little choice, but let NZ citizens back into the country, but I don’t feel it is responsible for any potentially deadly viruses they could potentially be carrying
  If the taxpayer had to fork out $2800 for every Kiwi returning from China, Iran, Italy and a growing number of red zones, eyebrows would be raised.

The media’s go to scientist Siouxsie is telling the great unwashed that there is no need to stock up YET.

“Absolutely not warranted at this stage. The average person is no more at risk of picking up this virus than they were.”

She says if a case arises where the origin of the virus is unknown, then there will be cause for concern – as is happening in South Korea, the US and Iran.

Seems pretty irresponsible to me. Now would be a good time to stock up that pantry, not to panic later when we know a disaster is upon us. In fact, many of us have been stocking up for weeks as we watched the news coming out of China.

  It’s obvious with any disease exhibiting exponential spread that the chance of catching the disease in the early days is very small, but wait a month or so…and the odds of picking up the disease will not be as low as they are today.

Cometh the hour cometh the woman. When I heard the PM telling folks to stop panicking and buying supplies yesterday it was timely and without hesitation. She’s been intimately involved in informing the public as to updates on the spread of coronavirus and supporting the medical authorities. I have a question, however, the man currently hospitalised with the virus has resulted in a search for passengers in the 2 rows before and behind where he sat for testing and presumably self-isolating – that doesn’t seem enough?

    Yesterday I heard one of many experts on the spread of viruses explain that for plane travelers the cabin is the least of your worries.
    More of a worry is milling round at security, immigration, customs, check in, boarding plus all those surfaces that multiple people touch at each step.

    Indian voters don’t have a lot of party allegiance. They tend to vote for any big party which will enable them to bring more of their family to New Zealand and most importantly permanent residency. The Key government did quite well out of Indian voters because of his pro-immigration stance. Fiji Indians tend to vote Labour as they are very big in their membership of trade unions. And getting free stuff from a Labour government.

Something to ponder re the Corona virus : (I hope I get this right). Back in 2017 the WHO took out bonds with the World Bank against a pandemic caused by a virus, the bonds expire in July this year (about $500m worth) providing there is a pandemic caused by one of six viruses, one of them being Corona. If there is a pandemic they don’t have to pay the for the bonds and get to keep the money.

(Not sure that’s quite how bonds work but Peta Credlin had the documents on TV last night).

I am still cringing with shame and embarrassment over our pathetic, immature PM giving Scott Morrison a lecture. What on earth did she think she was doing? Did she really think he would pay her any attention. ScoMo is no fool, he knows she was unelected and unwanted by most of NZ. The best thing about her lecture was the way he listened with a sardonic smile. You could just see him thinking “I’ve got to indulge this stupid little girl but I don’t have to take this shit.”

The only red for me is that of Manchester United

When Arden met with Morrison last year eyebrows were raised as Arden used the stand-up media briefing as a place to air her grievance over the deportation treatment of New Zealanders living in Australia being sent back to New Zealand because of crimes committed in Australia. Normally the stand –up briefing is clichéd diplomatic speak of “we have differences but we are working together”, “Australia remains our best friend”. Again at this recent meeting Arden chose to use the stand –up briefing to go full on attack on Morrison. This is not the place to air that. The normal protocol would be to discuss this behind closed doors as all world leaders do. It was tacky.

From this it’s clear that Arden is scared of conflict. She’s scared that Morrison would have been better, smarter and forceful in his reasoning to stand by his decisions. With all the press cameras watching at the stand-up Morrison has to stand there and take Arden’s attack. Answering back would come across quite negatively for him. Arden chooses this method of attack because when everyone is watching and your opponent can’t answer back you can be the tough brave leader.

Yet she can’t confront Winston Peters.

There was a time when able people like economists were consulted as to how many extras NZ could absorb. NZ had previously been sensitised to immigrants upsetting our peaceful society. We found English unionist-attitude-class newbies most irritating.
Former new settlers don’t like competition for resources from new comers of any nationality–add aggressive religious differences and that is an explosive mix.
Differences between people naturally occur. Those who are already settled don’t welcome having attention transferred from them or being lumped in with the new comers even if they are of the same ethnicity. Familial backgrounds rank way above anything else.
A wise Govt will ration carefully new permanent admissions. The demand for housing is significant too and the need to prioritise new migrants bothers a lot of existing struggling residents. Further immigrant admission puts pressure on our balance of payments.
Are foreign students a halfway house? The would partly provide for their foreign exchange requirements but may put a larger pressure on capital resources. They would still be viewed as in competition with established ethnic communities.

It appears we may already have disinformation (or lack of important information), being disseminated by the Government, regading the first reported coronavirus patient.

The Government first referred to the patient as a ‘person’. That later morphed into a person in their 60’s. At no stage has the gender, or the age of the actual patient being publicly announced.

Commentators here are now referring to the patient as a male. Interesting, as my information is that the the patient is a 69 year old woman.

Property researcher Hugh Pavletich is “heartened” by the Government’s action on foreign buyers, as well as its urban development initiatives and efforts to boost infrastructure spending. He believes the ban was a necessary step to combat a “distorted” and “vulnerable” housing market.

“I’m a supporter [of the ban]. We’re such a tiny market that we can’t absorb the activity of overseas speculators,” Pavletich said. “We have a big enough problem as it is with housing affordability without foreign buyers turbocharging the market.”

Pavletich said he hoped the ban marked the start of a cross-party political effort to solve New Zealand’s housing crisis. He believed a more “dynamic” approach from local councils could be a catalyst for change.

“It [the ban] could be viewed as politically-motivated, but it could also be a way of sending a message that the government is not going to tolerate that level of housing inflation.

“I’m encouraged by the political initiatives and also the attitudinal changes within local councils. They are taking steps to deal with this problem — but it is going to take time.”

Is the apostrophe is being murdered, asks the BBC, as the punctuation mark is dropped from some brands.

I bet the same is happening in New Zealand, and there won’t be time to teach pupils about such grammatical marks in schools busy, busy, busy with global warming, Maori language, plastics threat, the greatness of diversity, and environmental-religious studies.

Sign writers and sign makers must share the blame. They tend to be artists, and many will be pretty much blank sheets when it comes to grammar.

I also blame the sign industry for a change in practice for tall, thin vertical signs. For a century or two the practice has been to spell the name or message downwards like this:

Now the tend to print the name or message side ways, starting from the bottom, with the letters tipped over on their port sides. You crick your neck to read the sign. This is useless, maybe even dangerous, when you’re driving by.

  Robertson is a moron. 24% of the world.economy comes.from China and close Asian neighbours. They and India account for 75-85% of the APIs (active pharma ingredient) in common medication. The FDA just told Congress one drug already is subject to shortages because of coronavirus.
  Supply chains in health, engineering, fmcg, fashion, electronics and construction depend heavily (in some cases exclusively) on China alone. And not to mention tourism.
  
  The virus is not necessarily the issue. The effect on workers and labour capacity is. And it’s got potential to be a long hard slow screw for many industries.
  
  Robertson is not fit for office. Sept 19 can’t come fast enough.

The man is pathetic and ill informed. Trump was WAY ahead of the curve in his action to combat the virus, closing down travel into the U.S from several countries, appointing a blue ribbon group to address it, etc, all while the Democrats were sitting on their hands. How many press conferences were held by Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer warning us about the coronavirus? The House has the authority to appropriate funds to address the coronavirus whether Trump likes it or not, but have they? NO. No bills came through. They would rather criticize Trump, and Paddy is so dumb he is taking talking points from the U.S and regurgitating them.

Katie Hopkins was interviewed on Sky News Aust ‘Outsiders’ programme yesterday. She talks about freedom of speech, the nastiness of the left, the pending disaster in South Africa, and the effects of her being deplatformed and silenced in the UK. She mentions the ‘dullness of the green movement’ and the nonsense of Thunberg’s childrens’ parades.
At 7:30 she decries the self-censoring of sensible people in Australia because they can no longer speak about how they think or feel. At 7:43 she opines that we (NZ) are ripe for being taken over ‘by the religion of peace because [we] are already on bended knee …’
A humourous but very serious piece.
