  I was riveting a panel onto a 707 wing at Stanstead airport. It was snowing and minus 5°C outside and freezing in the hangar because the heating was on.
  
  I was standing at the store window at about 4.00am getting a new drill bit because my hands were so fing cold that I could not sharpen the one I was using.
  
  Fitting, sealing and riveting a sheet of 22 gauge aircraft aluminium almost the size of a sheet of gib onto a wing that looks the size of half a football pitch in the gloom in 0 degrees robs ones hands of any warmth . . .

  I heard from a friend in NZQA that the total entry for te reo NCEA exams at all levels this year was little more than 600.
  
  This from about 20,000 Maori kids in the current cohort.
  
  The question is – if so few young Maori are taking te reo at NCEA, why waste resources teaching it at all?

        Funny about arithmetic. I have done a bit of maths mentoring in a year 8 class, decile 1 school. I was mainly interested in how to turn a problem into a bit of arithmetic, the do the sums to solve it. I was not interested in the mechanics of how to do the sums. Maths is just not teaching kids how to do arithmetic using a method they will never employ in real life..
        
        Long multiplication was a bit of a drag. Long division was even more so. I was – TBH – a bit brassed off with it – so much of the time was spent doing the sums longhand rather than the more useful stuff about figuring out what sums needed to be done.
        
        Everybody these days has a phone with a calculator in it. When was the last time you did a long div/mult longhand? So why bother teaching the technique?
        
        OTOH I will concede that tables are useful. Lets you do a simple one-significant-figure sum to make sure the decimal is in the right place.
        
        I was frustrated by the fact that the kids were not allowed to use a calculator ..
        
        At high school (1960’s) I was taught how to extract a square root – it sort of looked a bit like long division but I have long forgotten it. Pretty much every calculator has a square root key and I will never recall it. Not to mention the use of log tables (or a slide rule) for multiplication and division.
        
        The world has moved on ….

    Sorry to be suspicious, but that sounds strangely low (especially as it is across all levels). I am wondering whether that’s right, or if it reflects that a lot of the course uses internal assessment and that figure reflects an external examination(s)? Happy to be corrected.

      In 2019, about 2,500 students (not all Maori of course) studied Te Reo Maori at Level 1, about 1,500 at Level 2 and about 1,000 at Level 3. The statistics are here:

  Same old.. There were complaints years ago about insufficient native speakers being available to teach Te Reo.
  A large part of the vocab are transliterated English loan words. The basic vocab was useful for Pa life in 1835 but is a little restricted for cell phone users in 2020.
  
  Maori has it’s value as a repository of tribal oral histories which sustain land titles etc. There are recognised tribal authorities and only they can speak on certain matters. No matter how much the language may be propagated its embedded cultural rights cannot be. It will remain a kindy quality lingo as without the authority a large part is hidden and reserved. (This applies elsewhere in Polynesia too, where imprisonment is also possible for reciting reserved matters.)
  
  The kids may have fun with hu and koti but should that be hus and kotis or shoes and coats? The grammar is very different from English and the pronouns even worse as they define a much wider range of human interconnections including some socially disapproved of. English teaching for children will be made a lot more difficult. Already Te Reo is being abused and even govt agencies frequently don’t bother with grammar or if they do it’s selective or has an English sentence pattern. Te Reo is currently misused and being killed for future public use.
  
  Like any Labour venture it will land up in the bit bucket with 500,000 pages of reports projected and 15 years consideration. It has proved too hard to date to revive Te Re under prior competent governments when more resources were available.

  The problem of Maori being over-represented in “poverty” and crime statistics, is not caused by English speaking folk not speaking Maori. It is caused by Maoris that have not fully embraced the English language, and the modern concepts, laws and values that underpin civilised society.
  
  I’m not against the positive aspects of Maori culture. I am against Maori being force fed to English speaking folk.

After 2 years this evidence-based indictment must not be buried, it remains in play to this day, particularly as Trump is now headed for the dumpster.

Maddows parallels of Trump and Nixon are laser-like in focus. And recall that Nixon escaped prison time only because of his desertion of his sinking ship.

Trump must not be permitted to use the same parachute, his excesses are far worse than Tricky’s.

And don’t give me “Oh Yeah! … fake news … leftie media sources excuses”.

Look at the irrefutable facts folks.

Trump will go to prison if the system works as it is supposed to.

It is not too grand a statement to observe, as The Atlantic suggests, that the fate of US Democracy is dependent upon his incarceration.

        Simple example just from today … watch Trump at the end of the Medal of Freedom ceremony for Dan Gables. He just wanders off out of the Oval Office while everyone is still there, and you can see the “WTF” on their faces. That’s dementia. There have been signs of the onset of Trump’s dementia since 2015.       The evidence of fraud is manifold, 1000+ affidavits from numerous observers and experts, major statistical anomalies all over the place, suspicious behaviours and decisions being made by various officials. But proof can only come from auditing ballots (recounts prove nothing when the ballots being counted are themselve fraudulent), which all arms of govt in US seem to be working to prevent on various pretexts.
      
      What possible harm is there in allowing such audits to occur? It can only increase trust in the process if they are shown to be clean. Whereas denying it just leaves open possibility of undetected fraud and possible conspiracy given all the various smoking guns. That undermines trust in results and legitimacy of govt and will leave a lasting scar on US trust in institutions.
      
      That audits are being prevented is the most suspicious factor of all.

  If the “system is working as it is supposed to”, Biden should be in prison for treason. His whole family doing deals in the China and Ukraine for massive amounts of money to buy influence from then VP Joe Biden.
  It’s not like the evidence isn’t there – Hunter Biden’s own laptop with its incriminating emails. Two of Hunter’s former business partners with texts and emails who confirm the same. They tried to impeach Trump for “quid pro quo” but Biden is guilty of that (and worse) many times over. But it’s totally ignored by the media because the media are on the side of the Democrats, almost to a man.

With his office located at the bottom of town, my partner enjoys fab views over ‘The Viaduct’ and the AC Bases. Even though he can’t see the actual racing from there, the daily coming and goings of all the boats is really exciting
A number of Superyachts park there, with Graeme Hart’s probably one the biggest. (Last time I saw it, it was so high, the apartment block next to his marina was in total shade!)
My partner was saying Harty’s a really nice guy when you get to know him, although he can be a bit of a ‘Big Noter’.

Among the many things in this article to digest (https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/123620285/a-feminists-gift-to-men), this one statistic pops out again.

“Between March and September, unemployment rose by 31,000; over two-thirds were women.”

The great irony in this statistic is it counters the whining about “lack of women in corporate leadership positions”, etc etc. In that this statistic demonstrates that the labour force most prone to redundancy isn’t an ‘equal’ labour force, and is dominated by women. Perhaps there should be some attention given to increasing the number of men that work in these areas?

What is left of the Royal Commission Report is to be leased today.

On Monday [November 30] the Federation of Islamic Associations took the unusual step of publicly releasing its lengthy submission to the Royal Commission.
July 7, 2020, the Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand shared parts 1 and 2 of the submission they presented to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Mosque Attacks.

It seems no explanation has been given for the pre-emptive releases by the above two groups.
One reason may be that they wished to ensure that their portions at least were not redacted in any way by a Government processing of the Report, despite the Commission saying it has been written so as to not require any redactions.
It presumably also means any cross reference from one of the already released sections to something in the remainder, is also more likely to remain intact in the latter.

As a general principle, if you do something reckless or careless that leads to deaths or serious injuries, but then work to save lives, should that exonerate you from the original act or is it more the sort of thing that should mitigate your punishment?   One determining factor as to whether an action or lack of action is good or bad irrespective of the law, is to ask the questions:
  
  If you could turn back time and reverse the action, would it have a better outcome? Would it save or preserve life? Would the current situation hold more regret, or the situation that would exist if the past was changed.
  
  So WorkSafe would have you believe that going back in time and preventing the helicopter pilots from going to Island, and therefore allowing un-rescued people on the Island to to die a horrible death, would be a better outcome. WorkSafe have shit for brains.
  
  In a sane society, these WorkSafe idiots would be instantly dismissed. Or 400 years ago, tarred and feathered as idiots.
  
  “You quick acting pilots rescued my children and family. How dare you! It was foolish because you broke the “law”. I would rather you had obeyed the “law” and let my family perish.”
  
  Anyone that saves a life is a hero. End of Story. WorkSafe should be nominating those pilots for a knighthood, not prosecuting them.
  
  At least we know that if any of these WorkSafe pricks or their families get into trouble in the outdoors in the future, perhaps during a storm, flood, or earthquake, that said Helicopter Pilots have been warned, and will be doing the “right” thing to let these idiots and their families die, rather than take a risk to save them.
  
  Isn’t one of the beef’s over Pike River that rescue teams didn’t take enough risks to bring out miners that might have been still alive?
  
  WorkSafe should get the Idiot or Darwinian award this year.

    I think you’ve grasped the wrong end of the stick there. None of the allegations against the 13 parties relate to recovery or rescue efforts, the investigation centred solely on the health and safety measures in place prior to the eruption.

      The pilots were either sanctioned or not sanctioned to fly, which includes all time up to and including the rescue mission.

    Having been a fraud investigator I’ve taken a close look at the offerings to date. The late night Georgia ballot processing cannot be denied–they forgot to turn the 4 cameras off! The pattern shown of close down and dump also seems to be established in other States through the timing and numbers. The other matters of preventing scrutiny and a lack of firmness in following rules as to mail-in or late ballots raises additional concerns any one of which could be critical to the electoral outcome.
    
    This is not simple fraud like tax evasion and it may be hard to get justice done. It is also most important that the people have confidence that the election outcome is fair despite the obvious negative fragrance. Anything less than a re-run may not achieve that.
    The USA has an interesting time ahead.

And yet can you find any reporting of this from “reputable” news sources? All you can find is so called “factcheck” claiming this is false

Aparently the suitcases are official ballot containers and the media and the poll watchers were not sent home according to the “factcheckers”

And all the breathless reporting of a burst pipe on election night turns out to have been an overflowing urinal that occurred and was repaired 12 hours before

How can our media be so effing useless or corrupt as not to look into this?

In a Republican dominated state such as Georgia, someone at local, state or federal level will press charges (it beggars believe that wouldn’t happen – and, according to you, the evidence is overwhelming). Then you will be able crow about how right you were to all of us here.
  
  The alternative is that you’ve been taken in by some selective editing of a video, that those state officials who watched the whole thing are correct, and you’ve been a bit gullible.

Georgian election officials can’t get their stories straight. And obviously no journalist bothered to verify what had been said.

On the night newspapers unanimously reported that “Absentee ballot processing in Fulton County, Georgia, has been delayed due to a burst pipe, county spokesperson Regina Waller said.
According to Waller, a pipe burst at State Farm Arena above the processing room for all absentee ballots in Fulton County, but no ballots were damaged.”

So why did all the workers and scrutineers leave if it wasn’t due to flooding as reported on election day and why did some come back and keep countining? “They simply left on their own when they saw one group of workers, whose job was only to open envelopes and who had completed that task, also leave,” Watson said.

So Regina Waller their county spokesperson is the source of the burst pipe in the room information, And no Georgia official contradicted that story until the security video came into question. Journalists fail once again. The votes closed for 4 hours due to a leak and we are told no ballots are affected and no Journalist goes into check or film the leaked damaged room or interviews any of the workers about the burst pipe.

Georgia Official, “Gabriel Sterling, also disputed Trump’s fraud claims in an appearance on a news talk show. ” So my question is why didn’t he clear up that it wasn’t a burst pipe in the voting room and that people weren’t asked to leave because of a burst pipe, as was widely reported by mainstream media on the night on the back of one of Georgia Officials say so. Nope it was a slow leak in a urinal pipe and people weren’t asked to leave. They left of their own accord. And after closing up all the boxes, 5 people then stayed in the room counting and three of those are related and have concerning video footage and facebook feeds. But ok. Electric cars with heavy batteries should face higher taxes because of toxic particles released from their tyres and their impact on the road surface, experts have recommended, reports The Times.

Models with large batteries capable of travelling 300 miles (482km) between charges emit up to 8 per cent more fine particles from tyres and road wear than petrol and diesel cars, according to a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The OECD says electric vehicles should not be exempted from tolls and congestion charges aimed at reducing road traffic emissions.

        Truman gave MacArthur complete command and control of Japan on its surrender.
        
        William Manchester, in his biography of MacArthur, tells how the US Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Morgenthau, drew up a plan to “scourge” surrendered Japan, but MacArthur threw this out.
        
        Manchester says none of the shoguns who ruled Japan from 1598 to 1868 ruled more absolutely than MacArthur in Japan.

The govt. to spend $12.2mill to make teachers proficient enough to use conversational Te Reo in class.
Lets look at that
60000 teachers in NZ
About $240 each
Funnily enough that is about the weekly PART TIME cost, of an English for non speakers.
My guess is that, they are out by their usual factor of 10, on their estimates.
It will take about 10 weeks to become “somewhat proficient” ie cost of about $2400 each or $122mill. Also with the lack of actual Maori language teachers could take more than a decade to complete.
Virtue signaling….AGAIN.
Impertinent question:
While all these teachers are away “learning” who’s teaching the kids?
and
With the slipping standards now, how far will they slip, while this nonsense is happening?

  So
  60000 teachers in 5 yrs
  12000 per year
  4 x 10 week time slots per year
  ie 3000 teaches taught per time slot
  10 per class ie 300 classes.
  ie 300 classes every 10 weeks 4 times per yr for 5 yrs.
  Q: How many Te Reo teachers, to teach this lot, are there?
  I suggest less than half this number <150.

  In 2017, 21% of teachers either moved schools or left the regular teaching profession. This figure has been broadly flat over the last five years. … Between 2010 and 2017, turnover rates for primary teachers were consistently higher, by around 5 percentage points, than those in secondary schools.
  So 20% of those taught will be a waste of money, as they will leave the “profession”.
  So every 5yrs (their numbers) they will waste $25mill for absolutely zero gain.

    When you look at the budgets now in play for elections – $10+ billion for US election just been (2:1 DNC:GOP), all focused on swinging a few million votes ie $1000-10000+ budget per critical ‘swing’ vote, it is inevitable that any and all means will be adopted by motivated staffers to get the results they want whether fair or foul.
    
    Coopting any institution with a modicum of trust to the cause is just a given. News media, pollsters, ‘Fact Checkers’ and other ‘media’ focused organisations are all quite clearly nothing more than propaganda organs for whoever controls their boardrooms.   I was at sea for nearly 30 years and came ashore in the early 90’s when I was replaced by the el cheepo crews.
  
  In those days we could get ashore and do shopping etc without let or hindrance. In the US you would require a visa but no problem.
  
  Before that you could have friends etc down to the ships and the Aussie and Kiwi coasts were renowned for their parties.
  
  Now the ships get into port, and this is pre CV 19, and they are parked miles from nowhere and it takes a long time to get anywhere. Crews are on long contracts and really have no time for relaxation. On top of that many of the seafarers are ripped off by crewing agents eetc and it is going back to the days of the 19th century where seamen were Shanghaied.
  
  Now with this CV 19 many of these poor buggers have been at sea for 12 months or more and there are an estimated 1.2 million seafarers in the world.
  
  If you subtract the ferry crews who do days or weeks on and off then 400k is approximately HALF the world’s seafarers.
  
  So Half cannot get home and the other half cant get jobs to feed their families.
  
  In the late 80’s I was told by the Mission Chaplain in Akl that by the mid 70’s the Missions and the like thought their job was done as the vast majority of seafarers sailed under good flags and with good compamies.
  
  Come the mid 80’s and flagging out started then the standards and conditions went down hill and ships were being manned by people whose qualifications came from the back of a Corn Flakes Packet.

    Look at the rise, first of post-war Germany, then Japan, China and the rising Asian countries. Even Singapore with its managed regulated economy is much less rigidly free market than NZ.

Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard has personally apologised for the “distress and humiliation” he caused an individual after he made comments which amounted to an accusation of rape.

“Trevor Mallard accepts that his understanding of the definition of rape at that time was incorrect and that the alleged conduct did not amount to rape (as that term is defined in the Crimes Act 1961) and that it was incorrect of him to suggest otherwise,” the statement said.

It’s all happening, folks –

The State of Texas filed a lawsuit directly with the U.S. Supreme Court shortly before midnight on Monday challenging the election procedures in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin on the grounds that they violate the Constitution.

Texas argues that these states violated the Electors Clause of the Constitution because they made changes to voting rules and procedures through the courts or through executive actions, but not through the state legislatures. Additionally, Texas argues that there were differences in voting rules and procedures in different counties within the states, violating the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. Finally, Texas argues that there were “voting irregularities” in these states as a result of the above.’

Texas is asking the Supreme Court to order the states to allow their legislatures to appoint their electors. The lawsuit says:

Certain officials in the Defendant States presented the pandemic as the justification for ignoring state laws regarding absentee and mail-in voting. The Defendant States flooded their citizenry with tens of millions of ballot applications and ballots in derogation of statutory controls as to how they are lawfully received, evaluated, and counted. Whether well intentioned or not, these unconstitutional acts had the same uniform effect—they made the 2020 election less secure in the Defendant States. Those changes are inconsistent with relevant state laws and were made by non-legislative entities, without any consent by the state legislatures. The acts of these officials thus directly violated the Constitution.

This case presents a question of law: Did the Defendant States violate the Electors Clause by taking non-legislative actions to change the election rules that would govern the appointment of presidential electors? These non-legislative changes to the Defendant States’ election laws facilitated the casting and counting of ballots in violation of state law, which, in turn, violated the Electors Clause of Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution. By these unlawful acts, the Defendant States have not only tainted the integrity of their own citizens’ vote, but their actions have also debased the votes of citizens in Plaintiff State and other States that remained loyal to the Constitution.
