Air New Zealand is heavily into use of the word ‘Aotearoa’ in their current TV advertising.
Why don’t they change their name to ‘Air Aotearoa’ and see how many tickets they sell?

    Agreed, CM. But leaving aside Air NZ, a number of media boffins and outlets also seem to be committed to changing the name of our country to “Aotearoa”.
    
    No change to Aotearoa for me, thanks. Because of its relatively insignificant size and its distance from major markets, New Zealand already struggles to generate international attention or recognition. Under an unfamiliar name, Aotearoa, it would attract significantly reduced international coverage and lose the asset of name recognition that it receives now. In the short-to-medium time-frame, export and tourism income streams could expect to suffer materially from such a superficial change.

      As I live in the South Island I object to changing the name of this country to the original name for the North Island. Aotearoa was the North Island – Nu Tireni was the original translation for New Zealand. Yes they translated New Zealand because originally there wasn’t a name for the entire country!
      This statement will probably be illegal soon.

        Aotearoa was not the original name for the north island. It was an invention in early colonial times. Maori had separate names for the north and south islands:

      The advertising industry is now into steering clients into Woke promotion. Notice the ethnicity increasingly featured in advertisements. Fewer white faces, and even fewer white couples.
      
      No problem if this is market driven, and what brings in the customers.
      
      However, I think you will find the advertising industry now has some semi-ethics committee, that is pushing for diversity in advertising – for diversity’s sake.
      
      The irony is that the relevant committee’s membership is about 85 per cent female.
      
      I’m talking TV advertising. Is there still newsprint advertising?

        I think we’ve all noticed it.
        
        No doubt this is partly due to action by the state in its various insidious guises to apply pressure, incentives and funding for “raising awareness”.
        
        But mostly it’s down to that Great Indoctrinator: public education. It’s crammed incessantly into the heads of children and it has been for decades.
        
        And it’s of the same piece as green policies. The plastic bag ban, and the coming plastic bottle ban, etc. will all go down without a hitch because the little robots were programmed years ago.
        
        The last thing this is is market driven. Pavlov’s dogs is closer to the mark.

      New Zealand has such a good name overseas and is recognised everywhere. If they changed it to that other name, people would wonder where on earth it was and would have trouble pronouncing it. When we lived in England for several years, I was so proud of our country from the reaction we had from people – also from people in Europe.

    It comes from the same source I suspect as “guidelines” issued to Councils about signage for things like swimming pools. The “guideline” is that a maori word must be used in large type above the smaller english one. The net effect is that a maori word is invented for a thing like aquatic centre (there was no such thing in the maori world) and then that invented word is translated into English. A pile of woke nonsense, but its happening every day in a neighbourhood near you.

  Won’t last, but it is so woke/trendy right now to spray of some irrelevant Moari terms. No one speaks it, no one understands it, and never will. They tried to force it on us at school 35 years ago. At the time, I was 10 and thought it was a dumb idea, still do, and it still didn’t work. In retrospect I should have paid attention during French class and Spanish as that would have actually helped with my career in the future, unlile Maori which has no real world use, unless you want to be on an Air New Zealand advertisement of course, or work in selected parts of tourism. Reality is that there is no real benefit to knowing or learning the language.

    Remember there was a push to change the name of Hamilton and Christchurch, just a few months ago.
    
    Once the opnion polls were revealed both efforts are dead ducks, as they revealed close to zero support.

        Are other people getting sick and tired of all the Maori language interspersed with everything on the TV? I even cringe now at Kia Ora used every couple of minutes. The newsreaders are slipping it in everywhere and when Andrew Saville spouts his mouthful just before he gives the sports section, it is just so grating to hear. If I ever thought I might learn a bit of Maori (I didn’t) I’m right off it now. They’ve browbeaten me too often so now I just find myself rebelling.

    That’s Woke, Nigel. Place names aren’t brand names to carry a marketing message. If they were, the marketing would be for tourists, and “Rutherford,” and soon, “Hillary,” will be less and less known internationally as the years roll on.
    
    “The North Island” and “The South Island” have evolved because they are simple, geographically based, and descriptive.
    
    Hillary Island? There would be a million questions, “one ‘l’or two?””
    
    Let’s keep “”The North Island” and “The South Island” for the islands’ names in the English language, and use Maori names in the Maori language.

  I think we all have to get with the times and accept this ain’t a war we’ll win or even compete in. Clearly all marketing executives and advertising firms are woke millennials and most ads now reflect this. Case in point the new Stein lager ad – Not sure the people who drink that rehashed garbage would even care about Greenpeace in the 1980s but anyhow.
  
  The good thing is with the little TV I now watch I don’t see much of this garbage and the little I do see (when the other half has the 6pm Propaganda broadcast going) is during beer time. Therefore all I do is sigh and have a swill.

  Thailand is rife with corruption from top to bottom.
  At one end MPs jostle for Ministerial roles so they can control mega infrastructure projects that are ripe for brown envelope payments.
  At the other people slip someone a few baht to jump a queue.
  My wife told me she once went to a poker school at someone’s house in the Khlong Toeii Market/slum. The house owner then rang the police who gave everyone the alternative of paying some money or being arrested. The house owner got a cut, as did the big boss at the police station. My wife refused to pay the bribe and was taken ‘downtown’.
  However her resolve broke when she was told she must spend the night in prison. The ever resourceful police produced someone who would take her place for a few baht.

    Yep it is a case of what Court has the courage to do the right thing. The mail in ballots in many swing states were not legally verified. No signature match, out of state voters, dead voting, some voting more than twice.
    
    These mail in ballots swung the election to Biden in the dead of the night in a statistically improbable manner.

    Rudy Giuliani has affadvits from Americans who turned up to vote on Election day only to find they had apparently already cast a ballot by mail using a ballot they never requested, or saw let alone returned.
    
    Various State representatives have been contacted by their constituents who tell the same story.
    
    Of course in States with closed primaries voter affiliation is recorded on the registration making it easy to disenfranchise them by casting a vote in their name

      Various people turned up to hearings with stories of cases full of ballots being counted twice too. And people who saw videos of boxes of ballots being added or moved late at night and that not just being sinister, but being proof of fraud and corruption.

      Andrei, what expertise are you bringing to inform your opinion of this law suit? Wayne has an LLB (Hon) at University of Auckland, a LLM from University of Toronto, and a PhD in International Law from Christ’s College, Cambridge.
      
      Does that mean his assessment/prediction must be correct? NO, it does not, and time might prove him wrong. But I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it out of hand.

    “Throwing out the votes millions of Americans” sure sounds emotive, but the potential relief is that the selection of electors revert to the state legislators.
    
    The legislators are elected and their make up is representative of the will of the people in those states.

    That is debatable. Because it’s the sort of lawsuit that doesn’t require evidence of fraud. The suit is over state courts & governors et al changing election law unconstitutionally. Which they did.
    
    In the early years of the Republic, most state legislatures appointed their presidential electors directly, without holding a popular election for President. That would change during the early decades of the nineteenth century. But the constitutional principle remained the same. Regardless of whether a state appoints its electors by a vote in the legislature or by a vote of the people, it is the state legislature — and only the state legislature — that sets the rules. [..]
    
    Importantly, the Texas lawsuit presents a pure question of law. It is not dependent upon disputed facts. Although these unconstitutional changes to the election rules could have facilitated voter fraud, the State of Texas doesn’t need to prove a single case of fraud to win. It is enough that the four states violated the Constitution.
    
    The lawsuit asks the Supreme Court to remand the appointment of electors in the four states back to the state legislatures. As the Supreme Court said in 1892 in the case of McPherson v. Blacker, “Whatever provisions may be made by statute, or by the state constitution, to choose electors by the people, there is no doubt of the right of the legislature to resume the power at any time…”.

      In other words, the fraud cases are falling apart, despite the 5000 witnesses, 8000 pages of evidence in Nevada (which I think they never managed to get around to filing in court – if true, that’s odd), and the overwhelming video evidence – so let’s try something else.         Courts are meant to apply the law independently of any external influence. That you think a “conservative” court would rule differently is either an indictment of you or of that court … take your pick.

      Lots of speculation in the US that Paxton taking this case to SCOTUS is pardon fishing. The case itself isn’t expected to succeed, but Paxton is being Trumpy in order to milk a pardon before Donnie leaves the building.

        No, serious speculation. If a state takes a case to SCOTUS then it’s meant to be represented by its Solicitor-General not its Attorney-General, but in this case the Texas Solicitor-General is very conspicuously absent. And the case is not expected to succeed. So the “qui bono” argument is that Paxton is doing it to curry favour with Trump.

  SCOTUS just ruled on the first “Trump wuz robbed” court case to make it to them. This is the case brought by Mike Kelly, a GOP Congressman from Pennsylvania, asking SCOTUS to prevent Pennsylvania from certifying the Presidential elections results.
  
  I can quote you SCOTUS’ entire response:
  
  “The application for injunctive relief presented to Justice Alito and by him referred to the Court is denied.”
  
  Translated into English that is “LoL, no.”. I doubt SCOTUS has any appetite for being drawn into the election.

  Have others noted the irony?
  
  Many times post March 15 I read local media pieces labelling NZ society racist and white supremacist and that “we bred this monster” etc etc.
  
  But now I see from the report, from local journos yesterday and from Anjum Rahman no less this morning saying that the guy was able to succeed in his long-held plan because he kept to himself, stayed isolated, deliberately maintained little or no contact with the people around him and that “if only he had had more contact with Kiwis he might have been disabused of his notions…” (my words).

  An opinion piece in the Herald yesterday by Aliya Danzeisen traverses some justice issues around the mosque report but the subtext is her closing remark-
  
  The least the government should do is offer the impacted appropriate resources so they can rebuild their lives, cover the actual financial loss the death or the injury has caused on their lives, and be restored as close to the position they would have been but for the attack.
  
  Perhaps she is not aware of New Zealand law and the substantial amounts of public and private funding and support paid out, much more than victims of other tragedies large and small. And appears to think that even more is required for some unstated reason.
  
  There’s a lot of that about these days. Fortunately we have a government generous with OPM.

Will Trevor Mallard face a no-confidence motion in Parliament this afternoon, before the House rises for the Christmas break?

Barry Soper has really put the boot into Mallard this morning (my emphasis added):

This was a story that could potentially have brought down Parliament’s Speaker.

Trevor Mallard was being sued for defamation after a Parliamentary staff member was sent packing after being accused by Mallard of rape.

The accusation came after the Debbie Francis report into bullying and sexual harassment at Parliament was made public in May last year. Mallard was commenting on serious sexual assaults identified in the report. He said what the staff member was claimed to have done to a colleague was tantamount to rape.

“We’re talking about serious sexual assault. Well that, for me, that’s rape,” Mallard said at the time.

The man was sent packing from Parliament without explanation, with Mallard saying “the threat had left the building” and staff around the place were panicking there was a rapist in their midst. In fact, the accused was never interviewed by Debbie Francis. No complaint was made to the police, even though Mallard urged the woman to make one.

On the day he made the allegation, Mallard summoned me to his office and urged me not to interview the staff member he accused, saying it would re-traumatise the victim.

I got the sense that he didn’t want the interview to take place because he knew his claim wouldn’t stack up. It didn’t.

The man was left devastated, saying the accusation put him in a very dark place. His lawyers last year began defamation proceedings against the Speaker, who has refused all comment about the case up until now. He did make an unsuccessful move through his lawyers though to have the man’s name made public.

That last sentence is disgraceful. Mallard, via his lawyers, made a deliberate decision to try and have the man publicly named. As if losing his job thanks to Mallard’s false claim wasn’t enough!

It’s also telling that Mallard tried to shut Barry Soper down, because he knew the truth of the situation did not match his narrative. So much for openness and transparency!

Trevor Mallard has always been a bully, and it would be ironic if a report into bullying at Parliament brought him down. If he was an honourable man, he would offer his resignation as Speaker when Parliament sits this afternoon, because he has brought the Office of the Speaker, and Parliament as a whole, into disrepute. We all know however that Mallard won’t resign, but instead will hide behind a shroud of secrecy, and gladly allow the taxpayer to cover the cost of his defamation of a public servant. And that disgusts me.

  It will certainly be a test for the constitutionalists. It’s pretty clear what the constitution says, will they hold the line or will they accept that mitigating circumstances can overrule the constitution itself. It could be a significant ruling beyond just the immediate consequences.

From what I have read so far which appears to be the media interpretations of the principles of the Christchurch Massacre Report I have difficulty understanding the rhetoric of the fact the SIS only concentrated on the hard right so called terrorists and did not protect the Muslims living in New Zealand from terrorists.
Tarrant appears to have learned much from Utube we are told.
I have a Utube of the President of the International Young Socialists screaming in adoration of Che Guevara. Is she a hard left terrorist and should be watched carefully by our Security service ? The number of hard right terrorists in New Zealand are not a lot against the carnage inflicted by Muslim terrorists constantly around and daily around the world.
Why would a country Security Services, as we have in New Zealand not have an emphasis in this direction ?

Yesterday, PriNZess provided confirmation that she needs a lesson or two in NCEA Economics 1, with her “its ok for property prices to keep rising slowly.”

For the benefit of Winston Peters (& followers),Jacinda Ardern (& followers) and any other fool out there that believes inflation is good. No, it is not. It is a failure to understand the most basics of economics and what growing an economy (or wealth) is.

In order to produce 3 factors need to be present to facilitate the production of “wealth”, these being: capital (money, assets, land etc), people, resources. Now if any one of these factors changes in value, you have inflation or deflation in your cost of production and the end price you charge your customers unless you have a means of changing your levels of efficiency/productivity.

So, with NZ experiencing cashed up people returning to NZ increasing the demand for property, and therefore increasing property prices in an already overheated property market, you have a recipe for an economic disaster on multiple fronts.
1. Immediately, prices will increase as retailers, manufacturers, producers seek to recover costs;
2. Unsold product goes to waste as market resistance begins;
3. The gap between the haves and have nots becomes more apparent, as those on fixed incomes, wages/salaries cannot afford inflated prices;
4. There will be a further rise in welfare dependency; and
5. It all ends in stagflation.

Many of us joked over the last 3 years that Jacinda wanted to take us back to the 1970/early 1980s, for those of us who remember those times, Jacinda may be just about to give us a repeat of those times. Because for those who recall, it all started with property inflation in the period 1973 to 1975 (oil price volatility aside).

Tens and tens of thousands of teachers, thousands of education bureaucrats, billions of taxpayer dollars pumped in annually and for decades and decades and we just slip further and further down the rankings.

These maths failings come not long after recent news reports of findings that just a fraction under 40% of our school leavers are functionally illiterate!

Why the hell aren’t we number 1 in the world at this stuff? Just what is stopping us? In 1970 we led the world in educating our young but since then we’ve just slid further and further behind and with other poorer countries leapfrogging ahead of us.

This government’s answer? 120 extra millions pumped in to training teachers in Maori.

FFS.

Where is the accountability? Who is responsible for this abysmal performance?

New Zealanders should be marching in the streets over this issue and delivering sound thrashings in the public square to the well-paid politicians and civil servants responsible for this appalling failure in their duty.

    SB2, do you know what you are talking about? Those that you refer to are often the sons and daughters of recent immigrants. These families have a high attainment ethos and their children often participate in extra curricular lessons provided from within their own communities (amongst reasons for these are the low standards set in state schools). I know of Indian families whose children do just this.
    
    As for Kiwi kids, I know of one primary school principal who said of her pupils, “provided they can read, write and add when they leave here, that is good enough for me”. This means these children are destined for basic retail jobs.
    
    As we found out with our own son (when we moved him from the same school), his reading ability was 12 months below what the school had been telling us in his school reports. Our son is having to have additional, maths, science, english and social studies because of the failures at his previous school. Our son is now at a private preference school.
    
    Education is the best legacy we can give our children and grand children. Failing to teach children the essential subjects to satisfactory standards should not be acceptable!

    Yep, if you have professional, well-educated parents, the chances are that you will attend schools where qualified staff deliver a full curriculum and you have exposure to books, language activities and experiences that reinforce the curriculum.
    
    But if you are born to parents that aren’t well educated and live on the wrong side of town/city, you may be delivered a lousy education from a poorly run school.

        But strange as it may seem a population of wealthier people has a higher proportion of more able children.
        E.G. I was in a primary classroom in Wadestown (top rich WN suburb) out of the 30 children there were 6 with IQ’s of 150 or more. The rich are rich mainly because of attainment and they buy property in suburbs of their own kind. Their children statistically show up as brighter too.

I am mystified. Maybe I am missing something. Someone my taxes are funding – a lecturer at Auckland University wants to help us cope with climate change. That’s nice.

He suggests that mātauranga (Maori science/knowledge) can assist us with planning for the future. He uses a couple of examples.

One, he says, “Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Summer’s early this year’? That would never happen in a Māori framework. It’ll be summer when it’s here.” Is that deeply profound or plain stupid?

Two, he says, “we need to work with rivers and let them move”. huh?? Again I may be missing something.

Or maybe we have just become so woke and so determined to pretend that Maori have much to offer that we are going overboard in trying to outdo each other in elitist arrogance. Another naked emperor.

Muskets were what they wanted more than anything. It’s amazing how money can bring on this touchy feely knowledge. If they pumped all the money they are pouring into this nonsense and also other nonsensical issues, into teaching our children the basics, perhaps we might just make it to the top of the stats and improve their outcomes.     Yes exactly. British rule and the Treaty was by far the best case scenario for Maori. If the Spanish had arrived there would have been no Maori left in short order. The French would have turned the place into another New Caledonia with a very much diminished and marginalised Maori.
    
    And if the Germans had turned up, New Zealand today would probably resemble PNG.
    
    Thats what gets me – the counter factual to New Zealand today is not some happy pre 1840 world. ALL of the scenarios for Maori were much worse than what they ended up with.

    I agree with your approach in general terms, Maggy, but “science” is a tricky term. At one level, it just means trying to understand the natural world in terms of natural processes (rather than supernatural explanations), at another it refers to methods we use to further that understanding (the scientific method, as it were), at another the corpus of scientific knowledge (not all knowledge need be scientific, of course), and at another it refers to the human (with all its failings) enterprise concerned with applying these principles.
    
    until they are rigorously tested and examined and critiqued, then they cannot be considered as scientific evidence or scientific explanations.
    
    I think that might be too sweeping – for example, Darwin and Einstein’s contributions to science were recognised long before they were able to be rigorously tested. I imagine some modern cosmologists, while working in science, aren’t in a position to have their hypotheses rigorously tested – they spend much of their time constructing scientific explanations from diverse observations about the natural world. Perhaps there just needs to be a potential for such examination?

      True, some hypotheses cannot be tested the moment they are postulated, but that doesn’t relegate them to another system of knowledge.
      
      Facts and observation and experiments will still be required to test the rigour of the hypothesis, and contradictory evidence must be brought into account, not hidden away or dismissed.
      
      Now, you probably know the belief held by some Māori that a heavy flowering of cabbage trees (ti koukā) signifies a long hot summer ahead…
      
      Another example of species used to predict climate patterns is tī kōuka or cabbage tree (Cordyline australis). Kāi Tahu use the flowering of these trees as a tohu, with early and profuse flowering indicating a long hot summer will follow.

Tarrant arrived in New Zealand apparently with full terrorist intent.
He was not radicalised here (but supposedly in Europe) so there appears to be no New Zealand input to his thinking, and apparently no hate speech of note, in New Zealand, to indicate his own thinking.

The hate speech then that Andrew Little and others would now act against is therefore what existed in New Zealand before Tarrant’s arrival, thus uninfluenced by him.

“Speech which is abusive or threatening and incites hostility towards a group or person can cause significant harm,” Justice Minister Kris Faafoi said.
There will also be changes to the Human Rights Act, which will also see protections for trans, gender diverse and intersex people. [1]

This, as far as public relations go, is unfortunate in that it makes the trans, gender diverse and intersex measures (bold above) look like an inappropriate (in this incident) add-on.

But Tarrant’s apparent near absolute absence of “hate speech”, makes the whole preposed Government / Andrew Little or Faafoi “hate speech” measures an add-on.

To conflate”hate speech” with Tarrant, is not a position of honesty, transparency and clear logic, to start from in the introduction of such measures.

Ardern wants to build consensus in the House when it comes to implementing the 44 recommendations in the report. [2] adding that she does not want the response to the report to be political.
That will likely depend too on the honesty, transparency and clear logic in presenting any changes in freedom of speech.

What is parallel to the mosques massacres is “Islamophobia”. In the case of New Zealand followers of Islam, it can mean scanning the morning media releases to see what international incidents of Islamic violence may lead to local backlash, with that focussed most usually upon Islamic women, identified by their traditional dress. This is the “hate speech” which was officially discussed (apparently resulting in no real action) with authorities, long before Tarrant arrived in New Zealand.

New Zealanders should have the right to question and criticise a religion, the second most predominant in the world and being increasingly established in this country, when overseas news reports and other accounts give reason to be wary of what some followers of the religion – diverse as it is – are doing.

New freedom of language legislation, or “hate speech law”, must take into account that some of the aspects of Islam warrant criticism, as have occurred recently in France – the murders, and Macron endeavouring to counter internal separatism.

Although Tarrant’s actions amount to the greatest individual expression of hate in New Zealand’s history, it in fact involved no hate speech, apart from some comments on a very obscure website, and remarks that were made to particularly close contacts – like family – and in Tarrant’s own brain. That is largely what permitted Tarrant to carry out his intent – he kept to himself, without hate speech attracting any collateral attention.
Little, Faafoi and the Government need to remember that.

This seems stupid. Government allows 2000 seasonal workers in from places with NO covid like tonga and Samoa. And makes them quarantine on arrival in a hotel where if anything they might catch covid. All they are doing is using up scarce quarantine space.

It just displays an inability to think and act intelligently and flexibly.

Plus 2000 is not enough. The government is offering financial incentives to unemployed New Zealanders to go and do horticulture work. I have heard it is a failure with only tiny numbers taking up offers of work.

    Horticulturists I admire are not those who are relying on cheap Asian or Melanesian labour, but those who are trying to mechanise their harvests. An example is Hawkes Bay firm T&G Global, and you can read about it in the second link below.
    
    NZ is down to 48th in the world in wealth measured by GDP per capita. Imported cheap labour is an important and growing contributor to the country’s poor performance in productivity, which is the factor taking us down towards the Third World.

Newshub blames the public for a woman’s miscarriage and doubles down on bad journalism.

Newshub ran a story in July, about a worsening housing crisis leaving a family of 6 stuck in a small emergency hotel room. The woman who had applied for 30 houses for her family of 6 but despite her unnamed partner having a well paid ($65) job, they couldn’t get a house. And they were even banned from using the motel pool. This was evidence of a severe housing crisis. Terrible.

They ran a second story about the family in August, and Ardern offers to help the family. The article reads “.. mother of four and pregnant with a fifth, has been turned down by landlords and property managers more than 30 times. ”

Today Newshub ‘s Dan Satherley, has run a third article on the woman and the headline says she miscarried because of public abuse. In the article it says “the stress of being homeless was too much – not to mention the stigma. ” (She was living in a hotel room, given an upgraded motel room with adjoining rooms and is now in a four bed state house). She said, “Facebook I ignored because I knew there was a big backlash. Whoop-de-doo, you’ve all got opinions. That’s fine, I just don’t particularly want to hear your opinion right now.” And then went on to imply that backlash she heard at the shop was about people wanting handouts. But that is not what the backlash on facebook was about.

Mackay says despite being able to afford a place of their own, landlords and public service officials can’t see past her background of drug use even though she’s been clean for 7 years.

In all three stories they mislead the public. The facebook backlash wasn’t about her looking for a handout or her passed drug use. The backlash that I read was aimed at Newshub who ran deliberately misleading stories and left out the facts to pump a narrative .

The mother and her partner had stopped paying rent during lockdown and owed $15,600 of rent and were charged by the Tenancy Tribunal. This fact was clearly why they couldn’t find a place to live and needed emergency housing. And why they were turned down for 30 houses. It was deliberately left out of all of Newshub’s story and now they want to claim that the public are bullying.

Perhaps Newshub should consider how they use people’s personal stories to invite public scrutiny of individual cases especially when they know they are not telling the whole story. It is frustration with lies and disinformation that is promoted as fact that is the cause of the public’s frustration. Any frustration should be directed at Newshub.

    Do you understand what she means when she writes:

    By trimming the search and the time frames, the government has controlled the outcomes. Lots of questions remain unanswered and due to time delays of the Commission and lack of resources on the community’s side, we as a nation will likely not know the actual full story.?

I spent some time during the week-end at the Tangihanga of a well known local Maori.
Regardless of the relevance that non Maori residents place on the Maori language, I became increasingly aware of its place in the traditional Maori world.
Perhaps, there will be a time when the English speaking world will feel the same – when the language has been replaced by Mandarin.

Does the council need to start preparing immediate by-laws to cover Health and Safety legislation?

Should those ‘new’ little volcanic activities, that have previously been treated as fairly minor, be taken much more seriously?

If we do it often enough it becomes meaningless.

  It is shocking. Yet the PM will say nothing about it. Unlike the climate, this is MUCH closer to meeting definition of “emergency”.
  
  Clearly the education system needs to change in a big way. And I can tell you teaching more Maori language in schools will just make the problem worse.
  
  Why the hell doesn’t the education minister fly to Singapore and ask “How do you do it?” and then come back and do that. Of course Singapore does not facilitate thousands of dysfunctional families and children through welfare system.

Judith Collins was surprisingly good on the breakfast programme of State TV1 today.

She warned of a coming fight to preserve freedom of speech. Now that’s a cause that National should try to lead on.

Here’s another one.

Canterbury law professor Ursula Cheer had a further warning on RNZ later in the morning. This was the effect on libel law of the Peter Ellis appeal, which the Supreme Court allowed to continue after Ellis’s death.

This was after Ellis’s lawyers argued that Maori tikanga (procedure, custom, habit, lore, method, manner, rule, way) is part of NZ’s common law. Tikanga, Cheer told listeners, holds that an ancestor has even more reputation to protect than a living person because an ancestor has more tapu and mana.

At present, defamation proceedings can’t be continued after the death of a defamed person.

The decision to allow the Ellis case to continue could well affect defamation law, Cheer said, with a new definition of defamation taking that into account.

“People write books and all that sort of thing [about dead people], thinking they’re safe,” Cheer warned.

Wow! Would even academic history be safe?

With our pink Government about to hammer freedom of speech, and Maori custom about to knee-cap criticism of the dead, NZ could be headed for totalitarianism tighter than Orwell could have imagined.

Sorry but I have no sympathy for these sportsmen, whether they play Rugby Union or Rugby League or indeed any other hard-contact sport.
They play because they WANT to play. Nobody forces them to do so.
They play because they want to make huge amounts of money, and often do.
They play because they can become famous and be noticed and be lauded by their fans and the news media.
They ALL have professional medical staff looking after them all of their professional lives.
They have managers, coaches, advisors, PR people, mentors etc etc.
They go into this business with their eyes wide open.
They know the rules of the game.
And now when things go wrong, as they inevitably do, they want to blame someone else.
Too bad.
