In yesterday’s GD, Master Mariner posted a link to the latest Freedomhouse Freedom of the World 2021 report. It is worth repeating.

As a lethal pandemic, economic and physical insecurity, and violent conflict ravaged the world in 2020, democracy’s defenders sustained heavy new losses in their struggle against authoritarian foes, shifting the international balance in favor of tyranny. Incumbent leaders increasingly used force to crush opponents and settle scores, sometimes in the name of public health, while beleaguered activists—lacking effective international support—faced heavy jail sentences, torture, or murder in many settings.

These withering blows marked the 15th consecutive year of decline in global freedom. The countries experiencing deterioration outnumbered those with improvements by the largest margin recorded since the negative trend began in 2006. The long democratic recession is deepening.

The impact of the long-term democratic decline has become increasingly global in nature, broad enough to be felt by those living under the cruelest dictatorships, as well as by citizens of long-standing democracies. Nearly 75 percent of the world’s population lived in a country that faced deterioration last year.

I watched a guy with gang tattoos spit on the floor in a food court yesterday. Strutting around like he owned the country, spreading his filth during a pandemic. I considered calling the security guard over and identifying him for his actions but I didn’t – would you?

    What do you expect a security guard to do on minimum wages? They’re not likely to lay a hand on someone in a situation like that.
    
    Having said that I was in the Manukau Mall food court once when two guys in their twenties started fighting. A woman security guard appeared out of nowhere, bowled one of them over, grabbed him by the arm, pulled him to his feet and hustled him out onto the street. The family of the other one yanked him off in a different direction.
    A few minutes later the security guard reappeared looking very pleased with herself and had a yarn with her mate who cleaned the tables.
    I guarantee that wasn’t in her job description.

      Why is there a security guard standing there if they will not keep the place secure for all customers? Fair play if he was intimidated, but if he can’t or won’t do the job, I cannot see the point of paying him, minimum wage or not.
      
      Aren’t the cops supposed to be our security guards anyhow? And why did we never used to see any of the now ubiquitous security guards even a couple of decades ago?

    Not going to work. The more this white scapegoating attitude becomes accepted, entrenched, actively promoted and even legislated, the more severe the actions required to turn it around. Laughing at someone coming for your head is not an effective tactic. These people (whether white liberals or brown agitators) are fueled by a hatred that is being deliberately stocked, and people who do not share the white man’s characteristic sense of universal tolerance (if not acceptance) are emigrating here in significant numbers every single year.

  I went on a ride-along back in the day, there was a radio call about timber being stolen from a yard and taken away in a blue van. We went past a gang pad in Newtown and waddya know at 10:30 at night were a bunch of gang members busily building up their perimeter fence with timber from a blue van.

1). My mate in Brisbane has alerted me of another strain of WuFlu. Wait for it, there is now a Russian strain and it has a longer incubation period – St Ash and the Blairite will be hoping this one hits our shores – 2 week lockdown anyone?
2). It now appears being a fat bastard is more of a co-mortality with Chinavirus than age. LOL – that’s why the death rate has been lower in 3rd world shitholes.
3). It appears to have finally dawned on Grunter and Beetroot that never ending house price inflation has a downside. The entertainment of course will be when they realize you can’t fix it without plunging the economy into recession.

  Comrade NZ is in a recession now. The massive money print has painted over the cracks. The printing cant go on. Thats why some of the big companies are asking whats the exist strategy?
  
  NZ is badly placed economically, apart from everything else. The problem is rising inflation will lead to rising interest rates. Interest rates are rising in the US. They will rise here as well. Combined with rising income tax rates, entire destroyed sectors of the economy and cooling housing.

      BTW, I understand there are still companies drilling off the NZ coast under agreements which preceded Cindy’s ‘captain’s call’.
      So what would happen if one of them struck our equivalent of the North Sea Oil field – something so vast it could produce enormous wealth for the country.
      Would Cindy try/dare shut that down as well? \

  Sticking with your theme Frank, I’ve been wondering about New Zealand’s lack of political journalism.
  The governments own critical Simpson-Roche report was released just prior to Christmas. You’d think someone in the media would be offended they tried to hide the truth. They appear to easily offended by almost everything else.
  If they had a minuscule of pride they would be pissed she is just taking their compliance for granted. Or have we simply discovered their top price.
  Now would be a good time for some proper reporting of this report. COVID and this governments response is still very much today’s news and so far it has received scant coverage.

If we really want to fix family violence in NZ then let’s stop the wokeness.

Sure, people of all races, colours, religions etc commit domestic violence, but the stats are heavily skewed towards less pale participants.

Yet, somehow, we always see a picture with white people in it. When are we going to see a more representative sample being used in the photos?

The truth is that, in general, NZ does not have an extremely high rate of domestic violence – it is really just a small section of the population that significantly skew the numbers and they are not represented in that photo.

    I’m not surprised. Whenever ther’es a stock picture of a burglar it’s a whitey too.
    
    Photos are supposed to add value to the information, but clearly they are really just there to enhance the disinformation.
    
    Unfortunately we are very visual beings, so the photo adds credibility to the story (even if it is bullshit) and we often take in the “information” in the picture rather than the text.

  Making it about race distracts from the real problem rather than helping to solve it.
  
  In any place with a generous welfare system, an underclass has developed characterised by low employment, poor parenting, crime, and violence. It is behaviour people learn from their parents, or whatever adults happen to be in the house during their formative years. Because people are the same race as their parents, a racial pattern can easily develop, but that’s more of a downstream consequence not part of the cause.

Why are government ministers advising that people did a good job self isolating after the earthquake and possible tsunami (as if…)?

I thought self isolating was part of the covid narrative? Are they so full of their own spin they just yell out the most popular buzz word at the first opportunity?

    I don’t normally listen to Tony Amos in the wee small hours but I did this morning for an hour and a half (it was good to hear callers accounts, from truckies on the road to people self evacuating plus Tony himself was excellent) and yeah even he sounded flabbergasted when the authorities finally gave that tsunami warning much, much later than it would have hit the shores if there had been a big one!

        I’d be interested to know more about how the system works. I assume there are models to provide predictions of tsunami threat for varying quakes and locations. Naturally, those predictions should be conservative – the downside risk of not issuing evacuation notices being so much more severe than the inconvenience form a false alarm.

        I’d be even more interested to know why the system doesn’t work. The cost of shutting down towns and cities for nothing should make a proper system necessary and economic.
        
        The Raoul Island gauges are a sensible early warning for NZ for distant incoming waves from north and west. In this case up to 3m waves were predicted for them and it seems they did not survive whatever arrived. We obviously need a better installation there and preferable some more stations apart from those and the Chatham Islands gauge.

Yet : How would we know how far reaching this technology is deployed in our everyday activities ?

  These data recorders are in almost all cars built after about 2015. They don’t get much publicity. IIRC they record the last 24 hours of your driving – every last detail. I’m not sure if they can be turned off.
  
  My car is a 19 year old Toyota so I am safe 🙂

    They typically have a rolling log lasting up to 24 hours or so – depending on vartious factors, but if a “significant event” occurs (eg. airbags going off), then they freeze the log so it can’t be overridden by new data. Most of them go into a mode where that data can never be wiped or changed – just copied – this allows the data to be used in court without people making allegations of tampering.
    
    Aircraft “black boxes” are real dedicated boxes (but they’re orange, not black).
    
    Car “black boxes” are typically not dedicated devices. They are normally just implemented as extra memory inside the ECU (engine computer).

  The “black boxes” in cars and planes serve slightly different purposes.
  
  The original reason for black boxes in planes was to help in accident investigation to help improve aviation safety, although it is used as evidence in court too.
  
  For cars, the primary motivation is the other way around – as a legal defense for the car manufacturers.
  
  As cars become increasingly electronic (and software driven) there has been a huge increase in bogus claims that the car went mad and did X. Sure, sometimes the cars do go mad, but more often than not it ws the driver doing dumb stuff then claiming the car went beserk.
  
  So car manufacturers now fit “black boxes” which record what happened around certain events (eg. airbags going off) that record all the user inputs and vehicle responses. The primary purpose is to show that the software did the right thing, but these now provide forensic information too.

  Incidently we retrieve Black boxes from Aircraft in the sea amongst other operations without going into detail.

Well its now happened. Labour MP Megan Woods is in charge of tenancy services. They are now unable to deliver what they promised.

On the 11th of February, my old Landlord sent off a bond refund form and still no refund. Their promise is that within 15 working days it will be done. As of yesterday those 15 working days are up.

When I tried to call them earlier in the week, they said we are busy email us. When I email them, I get an automated response that I must wait 15 working days. They haven’t even responded as to whether or not my form has been filed.

I know we have this Covid 19 thing, but they did make a promise of 15 working days and they haven’t kept it. Until now, within three days I’ve always got my bond refund.

So if they aren’t answering their phones or email, maybe I’ll never get my money back.

Why was it of the the about of 9,000 cars which left Auckland going South the other night before level lockdown the Tamakis’ have been solely targeted by the so called media ?
I was listening to RNZ last evening and I listened, until I turned off, to an interview by somebody called Liza Owen, with Brian Tamaki.
Whilst I have no affection for him or his following I do not believe that anybody on radio should be treated to such vitriol and abuse by this presumably squeaky voiced young lady.
Whilst she is probably a junior part of the so called media feministas I assume she is trying to get on the main eight or so list of the wonders of the media.
I do not believe in all my years, and that is many, that I have been so disgusted to such venom.
Tamaki did not appear to return your spleen venting.
Liza – you should listen to your interview and be ashamed.
If that is what $105,000,000 gives it is a disgrace.
I believe that Ardern does not like the Tamakis’ likewise.

  It’s ‘funny’ isn’t it – you can have ‘Red Radio’ leftie hosts screaming at people they don’t agree with (Lisa Owen, Kim Hill, Susie Ferguson etc) … but when you have a non-leftie such as Sean Plunket doing something similar to the chap in charge of the illegal Iwi roadblocks last year, he gets censured (then cancelled), called a ‘racist’ by the leftie/media and his media organisation fined several thousand dollars.
  
  I heard the Sean Plunket interview last year, Plunket was clearly exasperated that the guy, whom had absolutely zero authority to enact roadblocks and could not articulate one reasonable legal justification to back up his illegal actions, and so did a ‘Red Radio’ and shrieked at the interviewee in frustration and gets slammed by a gutless BSA (Broadcasting Standards Authority).
  
  I say gutless because on their website you can read their rulings on all their other complaints and 99.9% of the time the BSA backs the broadcaster, even when in my opinion other complainants have a fair point (but not this one time it seems)!

  Looks like there is some tolerance returning.
  Just as long as they are watching Extincton rebellion, Antifa and other direct-action types on the other side of the spectrum with their own bad apples, because Euro-sceptic or concerns about Islamism is hardly a bad thing IMO.

British authorities are very concerned that the 80plus age group are breaking the UK lockdown rules. The report showed so 80plus old age pensioners getting on an Arriva bus, going out and enjoying themselves. This group of pensioners had all been vaccinated with the Astra Zenica vaccine. But shock horror, the authorities are concerned, why?

Because they are in a Covid vulnerable age group. But hang on a minute there, they have been vaccinated, which we are told is 94% effective, or is it?

Either the vaccines are effective, or they aren’t, which is it?

  The oldies realise that there’s more to life than “being safe”.
  
  If you’re over 80 then your timer is ticking bloody loudly and if you wait too long to do things – just to “be safe”, you’re actually throwing your life away.
  
  You can:
  A) Go about your normal life and make the most of your last few useful years with a less than 10% chance of being stuck down slightly early, ie. a 90% chance of just having a good time.
  B) Hide away and do nothing with an equal chance of getting struck down (because hiding in a rest home doesn’t help), ie a 0% chance of having a good time.
  
  This whole lockdown thing is not a good deal for anyone – least of all the vulnerable oldies it is supposed to protect.

Countries aren’t really legally bound to contractual commitments – there’s no police force or judiciary with enough jurisdiction and so honouring their commitments is largely about preserving their reputations and mana. Clearly the Italians don’t value their reputation and mana all that highly.

As I understand it is unclear whether a vaccinated person can infect others but it is assumed that they can. A vaccinated person would still have to quarantine upon entering N.Z.

    THis is not my area of expertise, but this is my understanding:
    
    If the vaccine is working properly then it should also stop you being a carrier too.
    
    That’s the whole point of this “herd immunity” idea. Once enough people are vaccinated, the virus cannot be transferred effectively so it grinds to a halt (unless the virus can get some wiggle room by mutating sufficiently that the antibodies are ineffective).
    
    Viruses are right on the edge of “life”. Unlike bacteria, they do not have a cell structure and cannot breed by themselves.
    
    The only way they can replicate is to invade and co-opt a cell and reprogram the cell to make many copies of the virus. The tens of thousands to a million new viruses then break out of the cell and infect more cells.
    
    Antibodies break that cycle. That is what an effective vaccine should do.
    
    To be an effective carrier, your body needs to be a place where viruses can replicate.
    
    If you’re vaccinated (with an effective vaccine), then you should not be a carrier.
    
    If vaccine did not stop you from being a carrier, then there would be no herd immunity either.

What level of vaccination is required – and in terms of the Treaty of Waiting, legal – before the borders can be “open”?

So at the moment any one who is vaccinated will seemingly be protected. but may still transfer the virus physically on to others.
And those who refuse the vaccination remain as exposed to death, depending on their age and underlying level of health.

This seems to imply that there is no level of vaccination that protects the country as a whole – It appears to offer protection only to the individual who has received a vaccination.

Yesterday I posted a (declared as Hearsay) statement that a positive Covid case existed in Hamilton.

There were things that didn’t make sense, as noted, such as the lack of 1pm announcement, and (undisclosed in my original post) that is was a local MP preparing communications in event of a lock down.
I passed that on in good faith, as did the person who earnestly told me.
Now, the more I thought about it the more dubious it sounded. Poor listening skills were always an option (as I added as a disclaimer).
Now the MP was said to have passed ‘in confidence’ this information, that there was a community case from Six60.
Apologies to the public for this, from me.

Here are the ‘facts’ as I had them, and if it get blabbermouth in hot water for blabbing supposed ‘in confidence’ information – good job.

-The conversation was part of video taping of Dr Gaurav Sharma, doing multiple messages to ethnic groups for lockdown.
He was doing a message solely for Indians since he can speak Hindi and Punjabi. This need for tailored comms appears to be recognition of shortcomings due to the recent miscommunication with the KFC worker.

Now, it seems possible the MP has been doing this (although of course I would think the MoH could find someone other than an MP, it does mean a coup for Labour if an MP talks to their community).
I suspect that doing this “in case of” was misheard as “because of” potential lockdown.
The Six60 part could be pure invention by Blabbermouth.
Maybe even the ‘I filmed Dr Sharma’ is BS too, but based on my contact it is coming from people in that industry.
I have to wonder if a spike yesterday in people wanting tests in Hamilton might be traced back to this one chain of transmission of misinformation.

In the interests of justice, I have asked my contact to punch Blabbermouth in the dick.

I have been assured he will get a jab in in the ribs.
This is the best I can do.
More fool me, passing down information indirectly from a fool. Apologies all.

So here we are on the coast, in the evacuation zone, and ready to go if it becomes necessary. But my theory is that these earthquakes are a result of a conspiracy between Bill Gates and the CCCP. If it hits, it won’t be any worse than the ordinary seasonal high tides. All those corpses bobbing in the waves would have died anyway and there will be no distinction made between those who died because of the tsunami and those who died of other causes at the time they were in the water. The Government is rolling out lifejackets, albeit it slowly, and apparently they are going to low lying Pacific Islands first because they need them more. However, we were apparently first in the queue anyway.
There will be a “presser” at 4pm so the Government can tell us whether we can return to our homes

  HR1 sets minimum requirements that states must (at least) observe for election behaviour. States are free to arrive at their own choices and implementations, but must at least meet the federal minimums. That is the philosophy behind most federal laws.

🚩No word yet on a request for Otago Polytechnic fly the Maori flag permanently.

The Otago Daily Times reported earlier that the polytechnic board’s Maori advisory committee was to discuss the request yesterday.

The delay in a press release suggests the full board will consider in detail the request by the polytechnic’s student association leader, Ezra Tamati, that the Maori flag to be flown permanently at the polytechnic.

The Christchurch polytechnic has already decided to do this.

The Otago Polytechnic’s site in Forth Street, Dunedin, has two flagstaffs – flag poles. If the Maori flag is to be flown permanently, the full board will need to decide whether the New Zealand flag will also be flown permanently.

Protocol dictates where both flags are flown the New Zealand flag will be flown on the left flagstaff (from an incoming observer’s viewpoint), and the Maori flag on the other flagstaff. The Maori flag must not be higher than the NZ flag.

If both are flown on one flagstaff, the NZ flag must be above the Maori flag.

The Maori flag was created to be flown during annual Waitangi Day activities.

The Ministry of Culture and Heritage site says of the Maori flag:

While it does not carry official status it is a symbol of this land that can complement the New Zealand flag. Flying the two flags together on days of national significance such as Waitangi Day symbolises and enhances the Crown-Maori relationship.

We have still rising pressure for the use of Maori language instead of English to the point that Maori may now aim to replace English as the national language.

Then we have the imminent indoctrination of our school children with radical, Maori-slanted history.

Activists’ push more display of the Maori flag raises the question of whether their real goal is to replace the national flag.

Which was about 3 hours ago. I didn’t feel it, but my cat became unsettled.

She is currently curled up licking her front paws, so I think I’m safe.

  1) Last I saw, support for English independence was at about 49% and if you limited it to Labour and Conservative voters, there was a majority in favour.

1. When did earthquake happen, time
2. When did you get notified ?
3. What event did you get notified for, ( Kermedec or East Coast)?.

      MM will know all about this and will be able to quote reality. Youtube prob has good examples.
      However, today is an overegged/super extreme caution/lockdown style.

  The Kermadec earthquake struck about 8:30am, the tsunami warning for it for Auckland was issued at 11:30am.
  
  Not being a Mariner at all, I could quite easily have decided to go seaside and not have my phone on by then – I didn’t feel the quake and I would have expected a warning to come within minutes rather than hours. Just as well it is a work day…

  Not just the economy. They have got the youth severely anxious. We are having to drive them to school as they cannot face their usual bus rides.
  
  The negative social affects of the lock downs are humongous. Smaller business owners and staff are panicky too. The few deaths we have had attributed to COVID, particularly as they have mostly been among the non-productive have had little national affect by comparison to the damage inflicted through controls. A generation of children and youth have been compromised.
  
  Businesses are still being destroyed. Contractors are competitive and decision makers are slow or locked down. Subsidies helped briefly but that does not bring back customers. Those who have decided to work from home have added to the lack of business for many.
  
  It seems to be a surprise that many businesses don’t have the cash buffers to continue for ever. That is the norm. Cash is employed in working capital beyond that it’s investment, frequently financed by loans in an active business. Borrowing is pointless and likely denied when the business drops. As an Accountant I am seeing it still worsening. Public Servants can sit a home working on full pay but their former lunchbar owner or electrician cannot.

According to the Herald, Jacinda Ardern said “she spoke to French president Emmanuel Macron this morning, and the Covid-19 response came up.”

What? Where on earth did that come from? Without having watched the actual footage, I’m wondering just why it was necessary to mention “oh by the way, I was just chatting to the French president, as one does …”.

Was there actually any reason for her to mention this? Or is this just grand-standing nonsense?

  It was a critical part of 11 minutes of irrelevant political waffle whilst the citizens waited for alert level updates. They’ve worked out humans will hang around for 10-11 minutes before turning off. Hence the political waffle always lasts for about that long. The repeatedly delayed start is a display of authority.

God I am sick to death of Cindy. Watched the 4pm stream to find out if we are let out of lockdown, but oh no, can’t get that information until we have sat through 10 minutes of political waffle first. Starting with some no-name minister of earthquakes, who conveyed absolutely nothing in her 5 minutes of fame. Total misuse of the Covid platform. Then 5 minutes of Cindy’s drivel before we find out that despite there being a total of zero ct over 5 days of lockdown, we will still get another day of it tomorrow. FFS why? Another vital trading day lost by the hospitality and tourism sectors for no reason.

You people who voted for these idiots… how are you feeling?

If they had said, on Tuesday or Wednesday, for example: “If there are no new cases in the community by Friday midday and the test results we’re waiting on come back clear, then lockdown levels will change at 5pm Friday”, then hospitality businesses could have decided for themselves whether it was worth ordering supplies and organising staff for Friday evening & Saturday.
  It would be nice to have the chance to support somewhere local with a weekend meal.

Alert Level 2 for Auckland, 1 for everyone else.

Does anyone remember what the difference is between 1 & 2?

  Level 2 you have to be seated and be served by a waitress (the 3 Ss). Meant to be social distancing of desks in the office and the number of people at a gather is 100 (level 2), unlimited Level 1.
  There were meant to be rules on buses, but that is out the window.

Also Ardern: “No, I haven’t lied during my time in politics”

Ardern earlier this week threw Case L and her family under the bus, criticising them for not isolating or being tested, denying the evidence shown that they weren’t advised to isolate.

Also Ardern today: Ardern said earlier in the week that she doesn’t believe anyone deliberately disobeyed advice. “I don’t believe that for a moment.”

Lying like a flatfish – are you listening Ardern defenders?

The Dr Seuss book ban

Ebay is sweeping its site to prevent resale of the six banned Dr Seuss books, which are:

– “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”;

– “If I Ran the Zoo”;

– “McElligot’s Pool”;

– “On Beyond Zebra!”;

– “Scrambled Eggs Super!”; and

– “The Cat’s Quizzer”

These have been removed from publication by Dr. Seuss Enterprises LP, which oversees Dr. Seuss’s publishing interests. It says the titles will no longer be published because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”

Many Seuss books are still for sale on New Zealand’s Trade Me. Let’s hope it has the moral courage to keep letting them trade.

Just heard my partner telling his mate….. the poor mugs who got sucked into the ‘My Food Bag’ IPO today, saw the best part of 40mil wiped off their ‘investment’. Not that it would worry Nadia & co they’ve pulled their cash out.

  The My Food Bag Group owners came out well, quitting 75 per cent of their holding at $1.85.
  
  Shares closed their first day at $1.74.
  
  Not a good day for the NZ Stock Exchange as the My Food Bag Group listing was its biggest initial public offering since 2014.
  
  Staff and customers were among the new shareholders.

    Its after-tax profit for the six months ended 30 September was $7,575,025, and its net operational cash inflow for this period was $10,287,544.
    
    On the NZX, its market capitalisation (value) at the close of trading today was $421,841,000.
    
    On the ASX, My Food Bag Group closed down 23c (12.4 per cent) at $(NZ)1.62.
