Government ‘doing the best we can’t to deliver widespread changes to mental health services- Andrew Little.
This after three and a half years of blaming Nationalthe previous Government of blatantly underfunding Health and makes the excuse that $1.9 billion invested was always intended to roll out over 4 to 5 years. With early investment in key infrastructure and ramping up over that time.
He says the Government ticked off large ticket items fro the ” to do ” list including setting up a Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission, a Suicide Prevention Office and devising a Suicide Prevention Strategy.

      Always thought that the govt. should
      Give tax incentives to those who go private in:
      ACC
      Health
      Education
      Make Car insurance compulsory (at least 3rd party)
      This would open up the insurance industry and via legislation and market forces bring the price down and coverage up.

        1. Large capital reserves
        2. a BROAD base of potential income.
        
        1. Christchurch and Fukushima tested that
        2. A lack of diverse income is testing their recovery

  ‘Shovel ready projects’ that were going to be started as a response to covid. 1yr later and I think the number started is something like 17 out of 130ish.
  
  ‘Christchurch response’. Remember Cindy was going to wave her wand over the internet and stop objectionable material. That people ever believed this still blows my mind.
  
  Climate change. Coal imports now at a 15yr high. Why, as the minister in charge says, coal is up becuase of a decrease in supply of natural gas. You know, the same natural gas the govt shut down exploration of, the same one that is much cleaner than coal! Why imported coal, well we have stopped our own coal production becuase that hurts the environmnet.

    $56m for a Maori communications package over a year ago, so that Maori can tell Maori about this thing called COVID-19.
    
    Still “formulating the strategy” – I wonder how much of the $56m has been spent? I’m betting it’s plenty, and the taxpayers deserve a refund. Clearly the messaging is a little extreme, as it’s inciting them to setup illegal roadblocks.

  Happy chappy – agree with you in principle. This government has a record of failure and pretty much everything they have touched has turned to mud.
  
  However is it possible for the government to improve mental health? Just as a general principle?
  
  Now if you are going to say we need to resurrect the idea of proper mental health institutions then I would be in agreement and we do need money for that. But government services improving the mental health of the population? I think that’s a phantasm and will never actually happen.

I remember when

Many of the East European countries around Italy were largely untouched by the first wave of covid-19.
Did this help them.
They seem to have been the worst hit region in the second wave.
Deaths per million since the 1st. July shows:
Czechnia 2120, Slovenia 1836, Hungary 1679, Bosnia-Herz 1608, Bulgaria 1592, Slovakia 1541, Nth Macedonia 1441, Croatia 1357.
Population 44.27 Million, Deaths 75,997, Deaths 1717 per million.
UK second wave, Pop 68.14, Deaths 85,020, Deaths 1248 per million.
How bad was the UK variant.
Incidentally, Sweden over both waves – Deaths 1296.

      I was using it as a kind of shorthand for Northern European mainland countries in that the more northerly you go and the further away from the Catholic South (and Protestant UK) the more comfortable people are with nudity.
      
      Northern Germans are fairly liberal and the Netherlands has more in common with them and Denmark in terms of their laissez faire attitude than say Belgians, French, Italians etc…

    The Police recorded (God knows how) the increase in criminal gang membership over the past three years as 2500, 5300 to 7800, a 46% increase. Of those only 41 (1.7%) were Aussie deportees. Thanks Jacinda, nice “be kind” legacy to the flock of five million, won’t be long till we crack the 10K at this rate.

  The police issue of Brenton Tarrant’s gun licence did not follow the correct legal procedure, so how was he still “legally” permitted to purchase the guns used? Was his licence still “legal” after the police stuffed up and failed to follow the prescribed procedure, and did not undertake the correct checks on Tarrant?

    He didn’t falsify the documentation. The police accepted stuff they shouldn’t.
    A gun license or a driver’s license is not like a wof.

        A ” Fit and proper ” person is the only requirement and important one at that is all that “Used” to be required.
        Same for myself I must pass this and any convictions my qualifications are annulled.
        Question : Why has this changed ?
        My last renewel for Gun license I had a Police inspector come around home and quite rightly checked whether I fitted this requirement.
        One question they always ask is, Would you shoot any one ?
        Answer is yes in a life threatening situation but by the time you get your Bolt and ammo separately locked away you would’nt have enough time in a “fight or flight” situation.
        Which leads to next question: How many legal Fire arms holders have their Rifle and bolt and Ammo Ready to go?

    My old mate, who was the gun licensing man in our area for 30 years until 2011, tells me that any gun licensing officer with an ounce of gumption would have declined Tarrant’s application for a gun licence.
    Apparently the officer involved is still on the state payroll. Unbelievable.

  They only took firearms from law abiding and compliant people.
  In general, I sense firearms owners are responsible citizens – and for me and others I know even more so since we don’t want to lose tens of thousands of dollars of investment.
  We keep our noses clean.
  
  At the same time as the buy back, the police sem to be going with a soft approach on gangs, ‘lets have a conversation’. As David Garrett found out, they won’t even state that gangs are in themselves anti-social or tied to criminality.
  So membership and influence of gangs grows. The police seem to treat them like sacred cows if they block of streets or occupy public spaces en-masse.
  
  I don’t think the mana of the police force is high, just at the moment IMO.
  Simon Bridges was right on the money, and glad to see him being a bit of a mongrel to the Wokester.

Nothing to do with Aust exporting its ” garbage” back to NZ as claimed by the woke anti gun lobby (RNZ, 15/03/21), no according to them, it’s all to do with Police reporting gun crime better (that’ll be a first)!

Then you get Jax not understanding the issue and telling us a gun register will solve all problems, but that is a minimum of 2 years away!

For a novel idea, how about cutting the talk, and doing the following:
1. Ensuring the licencing of gun owners is done properly; and then
2. target the gangs and take the guns away from unlicensed people who possess guns.

  This should be compulsory reading for everyone. I have been becoming more and more skeptical of the climate change culture. Mainly because of the out and out lies of the left to justify their ambitions. I still don’t know what their ultimate aim is, but I know it is very evil. When I see the pollution in New Delhi and China I believe we have a problem with clean air. This can be fixed with methods of scrubbing exhaust gasses and more modern cars. I read that history and science show that the greenest time was that of the dinosaurs when plants covered the earth. It was also warmer with lots more CO² than we are currently told we are headed for. What we are headed for, is the collapse of modern governments and financial institutions that we currently have. If you put forward a suggestion that climate change is not bad for the world you are practicing conspiracy. I believe you are actually a realist; nothing is gained by not considering all arguments in a discussion. What we need is the discussion to start and take place. How to achieve this is virtually impossible in our current world.

    340 million doses of the vaccines have been given. There is not a single case of a death related to the vaccine.
    
    Of course some people will die within hours or days or weeks of receiving the vaccine. That is inevitable when you are dealing with hundreds of millions of people.
    
    I challenge commentators on this blog who post misinformation on crime, climate change and other topics that interest me. Similarly I am going to challenge people who post misinformation on SARS COVID 2 vaccines.

        No a contradiction. Out of NZs whole population about 30,000 die each year no matter what. How many will die/day per 300million? It will actually be higher percentage because vaccination has been targeted towards the elderly who have lower additional life expectancy than the population average.

I saw Phil Twyford in a supermarket in Hamilton on Sun midday.
He was with his wife it seems.
Coming face to face, a moment of recognition, but I don’t have much to say to him really.
Haven’t really felt I have anything to say that would be of any consequence to either side whenever I have seen Labour MPs up close.
I am a firearms owner, and sceptic of identity politics for instance.
Jamie Strange at least was warm and easygoing when chatting with him once, and I did say Hi to Tamati Coffey recently, since I have dined with him before at an event. I am sure Tamati didnt remember me but would have remembered the event. Not a fan; me, but again he’s warm enough in person and I felt socialable at that moment.

The only famous NZers I have met and wished to initiate a conversation with was Willie Apiata and Mike King – since I have admiration for both of them. And both were gracious enough.

Anyway – I noticed Phil carried the shopping bags for his wife, which was nice. (I know now that he is probably still on leave from parliament, and his wife is dealing with a cancer diagnosis).
So all these people are human, and worthy of some compassion.
However…..he walked out past the hand washing station {basin, soap, and towels}, and I trust I heard a quiet exclamation as he saw the facilities, a little guffaw of amusement or recognition it seemed.
More to the point I did not see any scanning of the Covid tracing app as they left.

On the plus side, he did carry his stuff to an EV charging station where he was parked. So he has that box ticked.

Would rather hope that public figures associated with the government would demonstrate the values expected of the public most assiduously.

However, to be fair to Phil who is not acting in that public capacity at the moment, Cindy and even Saint Ash didn’t always follow their own best practice in the past, around close contacts with throngs of adoring fans and selfies last year.
Had to enjoy Souxie dancing on the head of a pin over such things, when she had recently lambasted ordinary mortals for failing on the 2m rule, yet made excuses here.
Say, on one hand, bikers and joggers had 2m spacing rules printed on walkways for when they passed, and yet close posing for selfies is ‘brief contact’ and so no risk there.
Hmmm.

Kind of wonder how much these people even believe their own messaging, if this really is something of deadly seriousness and we all have a part in a team of 5 million.

Gosh it’s a bit creepy to think of members of the public watching every move of a public figure behaving in a private capacity.
Fair enough to call them out on hypocrisy etc when they are in their official roles but I don’t expect them to be role models for the wider community. Same with sports people or any other public figures.
Let’s just leave them alone to lead their private lives and concentrate on how well or badly they are doing the job they are paid to do.

  More the point that not using the App is some sort of cardinal sin for Joe Public – and you might be attacked by the PM for not doing your part around what is ‘expected’.
  I don’t care for the App one way of the other, but to say that public officials don’t need to follow public advice is odd.
  If every citizen is ‘expected’ to do something, then the people who are part of a leadership team setting the expectations should follow them surely.
  Same ethics whether it be leadership in business, or even in your own household and raising kiddiewinks.
  
  I also saw a window washer chap screaming abuse over the road at other window washers, extended tirade of foul language. Now this guy is not a politician or a famous musician. My eyes will see things as I come and go from a supermarket.

      The only time I have been compelled to use my phone during the 1st lock down (a pub at level 3) they made us log out/leaving time too.

You can bet renaming Hamilton to Kirikiriroa in English will be one of the targets of the Woke State media bloc this year.

Maorification of the city was the talk in the Radio NZ Nine to Noon show today.

The goal is “Kirikiriroa” when speaking or writing in English, not just “Kirikiriroa” when using Maori and “Hamilton” retained in English.

Kathryn Ryan used “Kirikiriroa”, and Hamilton’s mayor, Paula Southgate spouted Woke stuff in words like “unity and healing” and a “journey side by side that increases Maori well-being”.

The council had asked what it could do to “unite to heal,” said Southgate then said the council would review its naming policy to make sure it didn’t make the “same errors of the past”. These included having significant public streets “named after people that are offensive to Maori.”

Southgate said last June that she received a torrent of abuse after a statue of Captain Hamilton was removed from Hamilton’s main square a day before a local Black Lives Matter march, and after a threat from a citizen to remove it, and after a request from local Maori.

The city was named Hamilton for Captain John Fane Hamilton, commander of HMS Esk. He was killed in the battle of Gate Pa.

Local-body elections will be held next year. Are there are any red-blooded, non-Woke people in Hamilton who can sweep this Cancel Culture mob out of office?

    If the capital of the United States can retain the name of Washington, the founder who owned slaves, what is wrong with a North Island city retaining the name of a British naval officer killed in the land wars?
    
    The bluejackets and marines of the Royal Navy were often called on to fight on land in these wars, as it was a distant war for Britain being fought without top=line British Army regiments like the Guards or Highland regiments, and without cavalry.
    
    Not to forget the Maori who fought on the British-colonial side.
    
    Colonial soldiers and guerrillas like von Tempsky’s men will have descendants in Hamilton. What of their heritage?

    But Hamilton is the name of the city founded in the 1860s and it should remain so.
    The pa site Kirikiroroa is just one of many inside the city limits, and not the same thing as the city founded on both the east and west bank, connected by ferry and later bridges.
    Placenames might be Maori, but modern settlements are not.

  I was on a jury once where a guy was convicted of manslaughter after hitting someone multiple times on the head with a piece of 4×2 or similar.
  This occurred on on footpath in Petone. A witness in a house right there said it sounded like a drum being beaten.
  He hadn’t intended to kill the guy & I think received a two year prison term, although it was long ago and I may be mistaken.
  The trial lasted a week. Don’t jump to conclusions over what you read in ten seconds.

      Well, looks like National’s written itself off as a political party.
      
      In Stuff this afternoon, Thomas Coughlan purports to have had access, probably second hand, to the report by reviewers of the party’s election disaster – with recommendations for change. Coughlan writes:
      
      The National Party must have an “absolute focus” on diversity and selecting candidates from a variety of backgrounds, according to a secretive review of the party’s first term in opposition.
      
      The reviewers recommended the National Party board take a greater role using candidate selections and list placings to ensure the party’s caucus was more diverse after the next election, according to sources familiar with the review.
      
      More diversity? Let the head office wallahs in Wellington have more say in electorate candidates?
      
      If Coughlan is correct, the party reviewers are out of touch, out of date, Woke, and fuck-witted. Perhaps they’re the very coldly dead hands of party politicians of a decade or two ago.
      
      If the Coughlan report’s correct, National’s now as relevant as the Reform Party of the 1930s. Perhaps National will similarly be merged into a new party – ACT 2?
