        I would say being charitable and even knowing Milkie’s form, all he is pointing out is because someone may be wrong in one area, doesn’t make them wrong elsewhere. For all his numerous faults, there was more than a few issues Winton Peters was right on. Light rail in Auckland was a notable one.

      Twyford was enamoured, maybe even “captured”, by the Greater Auckland blog. The writers are all public transport advocates who pulled the Labour Party into both light rail, and high-speed passenger rail between Auckland, Hamilton & Tauranga.
      
      Both are dead ends.
      
      Winston was more realistic and acted as a handbrake on both initiatives. On those things at least I think he was right.
      
      But with Winston out of the picture we’re back to the Labour Party (Woods now) doing their best raving loony impression, with the Greens cheering them on.

  A simple reality … life is self-correcting. If you are a muppet (ie if you are a political party that thinks building light rail down Dominion Road makes sense) then the reality is that the majority of the population will eventually realise this, your public support will drop, and your opponent’s chances of winning the next election improve.
  
  A simple challenge … what will National do? An on-to-it opposition would bang the drum about what a terrible cost:benefit story this is, offer some better alternatives for how that public money could be invested (or not even spent), and win the next election.
  
  But so far I hear crickets from National.
  
  I believe an increasing portion of the population are growing jaded with Saint Jacinda and are beginning to think Labour are muppets. But so far National hasn’t given those people any reason to think National would be a better/different government.

Labour are having to change their underwear after being in full spin about “the new” Tauhara Power Station. And how it is all about their push to sustainable power generation and how wonderful Labour is.

A cursory glance at Wiki shows Tauhara Power Station stage 1 is already built and produces 25MW, 1/10 of one of the generator units at Huntley.

Stage 2 Tauhara Power Station is about to be started. However the application for resource consents for the 250MW power station was submitted in February 2010. The then Minister for the Environment, Nick Smith, determined that this project was one of national significance. In the intervening time, Contact has been drilling to establish viability for the project.

In 2010 it was the National government led by John Key who was in power.

So true to Labours habit of lying, it is nothing to do with them, it is National who got this project of the ground.

      It’s no leg pull, there’s a another public demo scheduled later this month.
      
      Things are hotting up in this area. Lately the US Navy has joined the patent applicants.
      The phenomena being researched are not new. EVO’s (exotic vacuum objects were found in early vacuum tubes and designers had to work around them. (They appear something like tiny or microscopic balls of lightening.)
      
      I’m bringing these to attention now as universities world wide have been intensely investigating strange energy for years and it seems to be moving now to a fast commercial climax.
      The science may not be settled for years but we may be in just in time to replace our old fuels and to provide cheap limitless electricity without using the primo birdkillers now used for generation from wind.

    Meanwhile the former head of the CDC in America has now come out and said that it is more likely than not that the virus escaped from the lab. This is not just a random guy. Former head of the CDC. He got my attention.

    More like successive New Zealand governments have “prioritised trade ahead of our traditional security alliances”.
    
    From Clark to Key to Ardern … both major political parties have prostrated themselves in front of China. Our farmers have benefited. Sort of. But I am convinced we are on the wrong path here.

Te Tua Station, the site of an existing water storage scheme, expansion proposed by Hawke’s Bay Regional Council.
There is no truth to rumours that it is going to be called the Ruataniwha scheme rethink.

    Te Tua Staion is in the Bridge Pa/Raukawa area – some 50k’s from the original plans for the Ruataniwha Dam. It will not be feasible for water from Te Tua to service the Central Hawkes Bay area as far as I can work out.

    Lakes cannot be bad if the alternative is a dust bowl, however some would say it is better to not farm these areas intensively, therefore as much water will not need storing. I think this is admirable, but not practical when we are still trying to feed 40M people from NZ. One part of the equation has to give.

Particularly notable was the missing data on how many people were engaging with specialist mental health services – a statistic he said was “the centrepiece” of the government’s mental health plan. While the government had commissioned a national mental health inquiry in 2018, he said there still wasn’t a clear implementation plan.

After about a year in power, the government unveiled its “world-first” wellbeing budget in 2019, which drew international attention for its focus on support for New Zealand’s most vulnerable. That year, mental health was given the biggest funding and investment boost on record, receiving NZ$1.9bn

“It’s hard to find much that’s positive,” said Shaun Robinson. He said the report showed the mental health system was in worse shape now than four years ago. “It’s not surprising, unfortunately – the mental health crisis in New Zealand just continues to grow. With the best intentions in the world, the response from government to date is just not adequate. It’s not working.”

There is little that this Labour Government, currently or in the previous term, have not fucked up and failed to deliver on.
My concern (over 75, and with serious under-lying conditions, so a little selfish) is the up-coming attempt to vaccinate the country.
Which could well be a life or death issue.
So, it could be troublesome if they get this wrong too.

      RWC the “influenza pandemic” plan was much the same as the plan, if not exactly the same as the one that was used for the 1918 Flu. Same rules apply for any outbreak so it wasn’t ground breaking or that difficult. So I’m sorry there is no “pass” for Jacinda on her response. Re the Christchurch shootings – She did no more than any other leader would have done, so really no pass there either.
      
      She didn’t bother with any major local flooding’s or major bush fires as it wouldn’t get enough overseas media attention. She is as shallow as a car park puddle in summer and not a PM for New Zealand in any sense of the word.

  With the housing crisis the government should be doing the opposite… Paying homeowners to take in a boarder. Simple things would help like guaranteeing to make good any damage, an insurance guarantee, no reduction in super payments or a tax refund for example.         It’s the 50% main home rule. If the owner lives in less than half of the floor area (or does not meet the proposed new complicated dates requirements) then the bright-line test can apply. The Ports of Auckland have an independent Board of eight who in 2020 received fees of $622,000 to provide governance.
So did the mayor meet with them to express his dissatisfaction at the level of serious incidents.
So the mayor used ratepayers money to find out that –
The Review records a ‘difficult relationship’ with the Maritime Union of New Zealand has, at times, ‘hampered’ health and safety improvements.
And, based on worker feedback and review of past year’s incident reporting, including near misses, reports ‘may not capture the volume of incidents.’
In other words, we didn’t find anything that wasn’t already known.
So was this part of the Great (Left Wing) Reset.
Support for the union who are setting up a case for their negotiations with Ports of Auckland in future wage rounds.
In the last three years staffing numbers have increased from 460 to 593, and staff in the 0-3 years service bracket are up from 166 to 296.
The port is working towards being the first operating port in the world to automate.
They have 27 new straddle cranes and new automated systems, with associated ‘teething’ problems.
This, along with the cargo backlog situation, has lead to arguments about hours of work and incident reporting requirements and responses.
In return the Labour Party gets a chance to increase their ‘blue collar’ vote.

Can’t see why all the police in the George Floyd case were not charged going by the video the Court was shown, they remedied his complaint of being claustrophobic in the police van by man-handling him out and leaning on his neck for 5 minutes. From memory, some of them may have pled to lesser charges.
I think the situation could explode again, especially around the evidence of one man telling police to check his pulse because he wasn’t moving and police preventing the medical intervention of a medical emergency specialist who told police what treatment he needed because they wouldn’t let her near.

    Why was he taken out of the police vehicle and placed on the road, what were they waiting for. He was already arrested.

      I think what cmm is getting at is that the situations police officers find themselves in can desensitise their reactions having heard all manner of crap and it’s not necessarily fair to ask how we would react in the same situation. This doesn’t mean there isn’t a police brutality problem (American cops seem to react disproportionately whether to blacks or non-blacks) or a racism problem in the USA (there is and by the way it goes in both directions) but just put yourself in the shoes of American police officers on any given day and you can’t help but feel sorry for everyone involved. There are no winners. Everyone was at fault.

After my son’s 5 week old $1700 bike got nicked in broad daylight at CPIT/Ara a few years back we did some research into bike locks – buying a few and destroying them. Most are pathetic.

That lock shown in the photo can be opened with a set of pliers in under 10 seconds. No need for a huge bolt cutter.

Most cable locks have very loose attachment between the cable and the lock body (normally some pathetic alloy). Hardly more than a press fit. Three or four twists with a set of linesman’s pliers will cause the cable to come away from the lock body – no need to cut the cable.

Moral of the story: If you don’t want your bike stolen then get a good lock – preferable a solid D lock or equivalent. The crims hit the easy targets first.

  Just be careful of what you wish for. My son did similar research after losing a couple of bikes to thieves, and had a large and solid D lock on his bike outside a supermarket when he went shopping.
  
  Came back out to find the lock absolutely destroyed but still in place around his bike and the bike stand. Trouble was, the locking mechanism was so damaged it wouldn’t unlock, and in his frustration the would be thief had also damaged the bike to make it unrideable.
  
  As it was Katich at night, he had to leave it there and walk home, returning with a relative (too far for me to get there) next day with a hacksaw and a very large lever cutter. After half an hour (with zero interest from passers by or shop security) the bike was freed to be carried home for repair.
  
  And that was a bike rescued from a junk shop and given a new wheel, new tyres, and repaired wheel rim brakes to go with the rusty frame. He won’t get a better bike in the basis that at least when (not if) this one gets nicked it is cheaper to replace.

Just a question on punishment and how its dished out, our Governments seem to have problems when it comes to well known identity’s. While Ron Beierly has committed the worst in crime and those that commit acts on children whether it be kiddy fiddling or a selection of child porn on their computer or any other device they need a custodian sentence to this whether you are rich or poor. But for Jacinda Ardern to allow the sexual crime that happened out of the Prime Ministers office , the Labour Youth Party Summer Camp and Trevor Mallard calling Government worker a rapist with not a scrap of proof that cost the taxpayer more than $320,000 you have to wonder is their rules for some and not for others. Ron Brierley or any other who commits this crime deserve the book thrown at them and stripped of any Honours they have. But so should the deviates and rapists ,those that caused heartbreak and distress to others with false allegations and accusations should also get the punishment they deserve not a get jail card that Jacinda Ardern has used as punishment.

I’m not happy with my soviet down here in New Zealand. Stories of the faithful dobbing in their neighbors to the cops, and this extract from a letter sent by the local Gestapo:
“People may exercise within their neighbourhood or travel by car to the nearest park, beach or reserve where they can exercise. Nearest is a loose definition however common sense will dictate what is and what isn’t nearby. Going to the beach when you have to pass two parks suitable for exercise activities to get there does not constitute nearby. The length of time to exercise is something else where a common sense approach will need to be used.
Meeting up with friends or family to go for a walk or do exercise, even if maintaining a 2m distance, is not complying with the restrictions. You must stay completely within your residential home life social ‘bubble’, whatever that makeup may be. The only time that you can breach that ‘bubble’ is if you are an essential worker going about work or if you are engaging with an essential service e.g supermarket, health care, veterinary care, emergency service.
Going fishing from a boat or taking a ride on the jet ski do not conform with the restrictions. Going hunting, tramping or engaging in high risk sporting activities such as Mountain Biking is discouraged. If you have an accident and require medical attention or rescuing you are unnecessarily placing strain and risk on those who will be deployed to attend to you. Think, is hospital a place I want to be at this time?
Rest assured that if as a country we cannot show self-control, the restrictions are likely to be made tighter and Police will be encouraged to use enforcement against person that are non-compliant. None of us want that!
Please take care of each other, be mindful of those who are less fortunate at this time.”

I’m shocked at how easily we’ve allowed ourselves to be communised overnight. For the right reasons or not, this whole thing is a massive power grab by the authorities and we all know what Lord Acton had to say about power.

The intense reaction to Dr Siouxsie Wiles, award Person of the year on KB calls for an explanation. Apart from her Pink hair and upfront and forthright demeanor, I think the anger felt is more the anti-science stance by many that pervades this blog.

This is seen in the popularity of conspiracy theories (especially currently Covid 19 ones.) Reflected also in the number of anti-vaxxers and not forgetting Trump supporters.

  or an epidemiologist (she was slapped down by her boss for telling an actual real epidemiologist to stay in their lane although she doesn’t like it when you mention that)
  
  There are plenty of nurse practitioners with more experience and ability who teach surgeons hand-hygiene
  
  She decided to get involved in politics with her support for a UBI and then went crying off the pitch when tackled about her politics
  
  She’s really quite good at playing the victim card
  
  She chooses to wear “look at me” hair and then moans when it’s noticed
  
  In terms of Covid she’s an entertainer rather than a scientist

  I don’t have a problem with her being a go to person for expertise related to her job. I think last year she stepped into political activism and that is when things turned nasty for her. If I had my face in the media and started trying to influence voters leading into an election I would expect a lot of kick back.

If you’re looking to fill in 56 minutes on this wet Easter Friday you might enjoy the Youtube video I link to below of the tragedy of the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious in 1940.

The Glorious and two destroyers, Acasta and Ardent, were returning to Britain from the Norway disaster when they were caught and sunk by the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.

The Glorious’s captain was sailing independently of the main British fleet in haste to get to Scapa Flow for the court-martial of his air commander, who had refused an order.

When the three ships went down, 1531 sailors and airmen died (the Glorious was carrying evacuated RAF Hurricanes as well as its own planes). No-one came to the aid of survivors in the water until they were found by Norwegian fishing trawlers three days later.

The video includes content from German Navy veterans who praise the bravery of the Royal Navy destroyer crews.
