Calling out corporate hypocrisy

More corporates should respond like this to hypocrisy from fellow corporates.

  It’s not just hypocritical corporates but also governments and politicians. A small example. Did anyone else notice Queen Jacinda, while visiting the carnage caused by the Canterbury floods, getting into a large twin cab ute to escape the mud.

Actually, they’re just following the earlier line of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, which gave Northface it’s “Extraordinary Customer Award”. This was also backed up by a Louisiana State government resolution:

The resolution highlights the “symbiotic relationship between the Louisiana oil and gas and petrochemical industry and The North Face,” commending the clothing company for “utilizing vital oil and gas resources so important to our state.”

“The North Face continues to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, backpacks, duffels, and footwear made with nylon, polyester, and polyurethane, all of which come from petroleum products,”

North Face will no doubt be extolling the virtue of their carbon zero status, courtesy of purchase of carbon credits.

Bollocks. There is no argument that the refined products of the hydrocarbon industry don’t have legitimate uses in packaging and plastics, textiles, even fertiliser. If we use them where it is appropriate we don’t in any way condone their general acceptance against our best interest.

  That was the point though. North Face wouldn’t allow an oil and gas corporate logo on their jacket. But oil and gas has “legitimate uses” (in your judgement). I also think they have legitimate uses, I just happen to think that use as a transport fuel or to make electricity is also a legitimate use.

Well, it’s a first step, I suppose. The oil and gas industry need to take it to the next level and refuse to supply or support North Face and any other corporate poser. Hit them hard, in the pocket. Same for any other corporation that practices hypocritical activism and selective outrage. Not easy, but then again we can’t have “Cancel culture for me but not for thee”.

The other point is that most oil & gas used for clothing is effectively sequestered.

  Yes but the point is if that clothing happens to be being used when you are travelling to the outdoors using a lot of fuel to get there.

Just because plastics and may other products including textiles are made from oil is hardly a reason not to have any controls on CO2 emissions.

Liberty CEO’s viewpoint will only appeal to those who are already opposed to any limits on CO2 emissions and think man made climate change is a hoax. That is very definitely a declining market, even if it has lots of support among some regular contributors to Kiwiblog.

  No, Wayne, it also appeals to realists who recognise that virtue-signalling leads to hypocrisy, because the real-world operates differently than the twittersphere or what the greenwash marketing companies would have you believe it works.
  
  We are heading for a global energy crisis simply because “big oil” is being pushed to cut investment in new production without a proper transition plan (there will also be a geopolitical shift as the likes of OPEC simply carry on carrying on). I was reading the other day that the world is about $600 billion/annum behind in the needed investment to maintain energy production capacity.
  
  We need a healthy dose of reality in corporate thinking to have a proper transition. Honestly, the maturity of thinking appears similar to primary school children grappling with the classic psychological/moral dilemma of “is it ok to steal medicine in order to save a life?”

  Wayne it appeals to those of us who feel revulsion towards those woke corporate wonks and members of government present and past who pontificate to the peasants about how they are destroying the planet and need to sacrifice and grovel in shame while the virtue signaling elite consume more, waste more, pollute more and emit more CO2 than those the lecture down to.

  I didn’t hear any mention of CO2 emission controls in the video.
  
  It was a response to North Face refusing an order for branded jackets from an oil field services contractor called Innovex. North Face said they didn’t want their brand associated with the fossil fuel industry.
  
  But North Face’s products are largely made of fossil fuel based spandex, nylon and polyester. Those materials are sources of the microplastics environmental researchers have now found practically everywhere and consider problematic.
  
  It seems entirely reasonable for the oil and gas industry to point this out, as well as how reliant pretty much all modern day “back to nature” outdoor adventuring is on oil and gas, above and beyond the usual dependence of international businesses.

I love this response from the CEO. I wish more companies invested in this type of counter argument to highlight the double standards.
How many of these latte Woke Greenies protest against the oil industry, but drop their kids of each day at school in air-conditioned cars, then pick up their Starbucks frappuccino (in its plastic container), on their way to the gym in their lycra fabrics (which require high levels of energy and the use of a variety of toxic chemicals, and which don’t biodegrade.)???
