        For two reasons, Brian. One, those schemes had the Salvation Army as lead organisation, so the public money was being handled by a reputable organisation.
        The second: The funding was cut due to lack of progress.
        In other words, they tried something, it didn’t work sufficiently well, so it was stopped.
        
        Now Labour would like us to believe that it will work much better if we just give the money straight to the gang. Which, I’ll grant you, is different.

Nope, no Homer D’oh there. Our PM appears to have the correct answer. As she should as she was one of the Ministers that signed off a proposal formulated by various government depts and ministries from health, justice to police.

Unless you are implying that this strategy for spending money confiscated from the gangs couldn’t possibly be worth trying. Well that’s just fine but as the earlier pilot showed promise perhaps the Taxpayers Union could tell us all what they propose to defeat the scourge of P.

Well let’s just see then shall we. Or are we committed to rushing to judgement on this initiative because we don’t like the parties? They do say perfect is the enemy of the good. Perhaps here in the land of we know best it’s better to have never tried than tried and just possibly have made progress.

Oh, and $2.75m wouldn’t pay a weeks wage bill for the ADHB nurses so spare us the emotive but absurd equivalencies.

  You tell us what expert credentials and years of undergraduate and postgraduate tertiary education and qualifications in the required disciplines of social psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychiatry and addiction medicine that gang members have to be able to expertly turn drug users clean.
  
  Show us the academic studies and psychoanalytic models the gangs will use as the basis to formulate their rehabilitation programme.
  
  Show us the metrics and observable measurements the gangs will use to measure and quantify their proposed success rate. What is their proposed success rate, by the way?
  
  And whatever you do, don’t:
  
  a) answer the question with a question
  b) deflect, deny or divert
  c) use pejorative language and ad hominem attacks
  d) obfuscate your answer
  e) tell us that drug users don’t have psychological problems-it’s just that they are misunderstood and marginalised by society -refer to use of psychoanalytics above to account for this.
  
  Just give us the hard data and evidential basis that will convince us that the Mongel Mob, or any other gang, is qualified to undertake professional drug rehabilitation and ensure a significant, durable and measurable success rate.
  
  (Here’s a hint, weeding the garden of the Mongrel Mob boss doesn’t cut it).
  
  What are we actually getting for our $2.75 million dollars Okahu? Let’s hear the facts.

    This would be a miserable forum if we only allowed experts in the field to opine. Why, DPF goes out of his way to neglect the voices that don’t support the tenor of his offerings.
    
    But in the spirit of your extensive questioning I have to plead…zero! But that’s not the point is it? I don’t wonder about the strength of bridges I cross. I leave it to those who design and peer review such structures to get it right. Now of course we are in much less objective country here when the difficult matrix of law and health and addiction collide with politics (with a large helping of personal animus tossed in). I don’t pretend to have the answers.
    
    This however I do know. What we have tried thus far has not worked. Got that? Failed! Again and again! It seems not to matter how many people we incarcerate, how big our drug seizures, how much we pretend our drugs are better than theirs. The ‘problem’ doesn’t get resolved.
    
    Where were the howls of outrage at every program that has been tried but presumably failed to get on top of this issue previously? And I bet they didn’t start with the modest advantage of merely employing confiscated funds.
    
    Get the idea that you have been whipped in to a lather, had your buttons pushed, not because you could point to the failures of the inter-agency group that produced this scheme but because it was co-signed off by this blog’s favourite whipping girl?
    
    Get the feeling that you are here because it’s a political blog and not a social science journal?

      IMO, this problem will only be resolved when there is political will to do so.
      At this time, there is no will to do so when we have Labour’s political Lap Dogs (the Greens) pushing for the legalisation of Marijuana and whatever else they are on.
      If we were serious, we would be invoicing these Gangs for drug addiction rehabilitation when it can be proven the addict became addicted via a Gang-related supply of the substance.
      However, given that there is currently no will on the part of our Police Force to apprehend and prosecute addicts, I seriously doubt we will ever stamp out the problem.
      That is not to suggest we should legitimise illegal substance use but we should be holding our Police responsible for non-enforcement of the law.

  Are there any qualified clinicians involved in the procedures. How about qualified and suitably trained addiction counsellors?

  If the answers to any of the above were an emphatic yes, don’t you think that they would be being trumpted from the rooftops.

I thought I’d check as to what the Kahukura programme entails:

Because I’m damn sure very little of $916,666 value will trickle down to the participants and whanau of the gang member.
