Rotorua ‘disorder event’: screaming, revving, gang sloganchanting heard.Also cars used as weapons others fighting, Is this the New Zealand everybody wants
because this is what you can expect from our loving caring Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the rest of her Government if Labour wins the next election.
The Police are compromised with a weak and woke Leader and can’t get to every major crime so this is becoming the Norm and is not helped by our Government giving donations in the thousands to gangs around New Zealand.

Kainga Ora possum in the headlights again yesterday, One News.

The Prime Minister said firmly in the item that Labour inherited a housing crisis in September 2017 and that ”the last National government continuously sold off state housing”.

Be good to see her and others repeating this mantra challenged to quantify just how many were sold, to whom and for what. Let’s see how many were sold cheaply to Community Housing Providers (their tenants get the same taxpayer subsidised rent as government tenants), how many sold for redevelopment and tenants rehoused (eg Glen Innes / Eke Panuku), how many were too old or damaged to be economically repaired, and how many sold because there was no demand for size or location.
All that information is almost certainly readily available, National used to publish most of it during their terms.

Noting that the social housing waiting list has quadrupled in the past 4 years. September 2017 5,844; December 2021 – 25,525. Tell us again about the housing crisis you inherited, Prime Minister.

    I’ve worked as a consultant on a KO project – doing some costing advice for a project in Christchurch. Gold plated, high spec with expensive architects etc with an OTT design that wouldn’t look out of place in a blue chip suburb. Progress? Fair to say that glaciers move quicker.
    
    No surprise to me that they have such terrible completion rates. Yet they still hire ever more folks on $150k/year (or more) to move bits of paper around who genuinely couldn’t get a $80k/year job in the private sector.

  Gosh, it’s been a while since we heard the old “9 years of neglect” and that the last National government continually sold state houses. Your questions are spot on, Artemisia, and I can advise that the vast majority of them were sold to affordable housing providers, including more than 1,000 in Tauranga to Accessible Properties.
  
  AP is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in the very difficult task of managing housing stocks for disadvantaged people, and does a brilliant job of it. The last National-led government, recognising the incontrovertible truth that with very few exceptions, the private sector will manage assets and resources, and provide services much more efficiently and cheaply than any government department can, managed the very orderly transfer of much of the stock to organisations such as AP.
  
  It’s the diametric opposite approach to socialist governments who believe they should control the means of production, own all the assets, and deliver all the “services” much better than a greedy capitalist would. And they’ve been proven wrong time and time again.

Last week our family visited Huka Falls. The information board at the start of our walk let us know we where guests. It appears the area is subject of a land claim by local Maori.
“The tribes of the Waikato River now seek the restoration, management and protection of the river for the benefit of current and future generations.”

Later that same week Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, co leader of the Maori party, wrote in the NZ Herald Saturday – ” Te Pati Maori knows that the only way this nation can work is when Maori are supported to assert their rights to self management, self determination and self governance over all their domains.”

The common thread is that Maori appear to want to regain control of this country and the rest of us will be guests reliant on their sufferance.
For myself and my family we know no other country. Many of us will be in the same situation. We need to understand there is a move afoot to take our country away from us and give it to the Maori.
Please don’t think this will lead to equality. Radicals don’t believe in equality. No the Maori will run the show and we will be reliant on their good will.

If you want NZ to remain the country you love you must vote differently. A vote for Labour or the Greens is a vote for separatism and Maori ascendancy.

  Those are Scott’s words, not Ngarewa-Packer’s.
  
  By all means we can carry on shouting “You’re anti-democratic!” and they can carry on shouting “You’re racist!”; but if we want to move beyond that divisive and embittering stand-off, we could try asking a few questions as to what Ngarewa-Packer actually means. Doing so, in a civilised, polite, good-faith sort of manner would be far more difficult for her to brush off with a dog-whistle cry of “RACIST!”.
  
  For example: All of us have “rights to self management, self determination and self governance over all their domains”. Wouldn’t we all agree that it is right and proper that in our own home, I and my family get to choose what we wear, eat, watch on television, grow in the garden etc, and (subject to legally-defined and strictly controlled exceptions) we get to decide who is and who isn’t allowed to come into the house?
  
  “Oh, but that’s not the kind of thing Ngarewa-Packer really means!” Isn’t it? How do you know? Have you made any attempt to find out what she means by terms such as “their domains”, “self determination”, “self governance” and “self management” as opposed to what you assume she means?
  
  I think being asked, reasonably and politely, to explain what exactly she means and the details of how she envisages it working, would give her a great deal more trouble than shouting “they want to take over the whole country!”
  
  She can respond to the latter simply by saying “no we don’t, you are making racist assumptions”. Easy – point scored, move on.
  
  But she can’t simply dismiss the former. On the contrary, the more she tries to explain, the more she’s likely to come to realise that she really, really needs to think through, much more carefully, what is actually in the real interests of her constituency.

    Over on LinkedIn I frequently ask Maori activists and their white enablers exactly what they mean. I find that none of them either want to be specific or are sufficiently thoughtful or articulate to tell me. Instead they resort to insulting me personally.
    The closest I got was someone saying “a great equalising is taking place”.
    Your approach is absolutely spot on. If they did manage to specify what they want I think I even they would recognise how ridiculous and abhorrent it would be. At least in the public domain. I shudder to think what is being said in those numerous taxpayer funding indigenous people’s conferences they go to.

  Tangata whenua only applies to your regional homelands.
  
  Maori only want sovereignty over their own lands not the entire country as one people. That’s a conversation between all iwi after all the confiscation reparations are addressed.

I drove from Te Kuiti to New Plymouth yesterday (along Highway 3) and got caught up in the mandate convoy. Wow. Along with hundreds of vehicles I also saw thousands of people on the side of the road cheering and waving. In New Plymouth all the bridges were packed with people and in the centre of New Plymouth, on the Macdonald intersection, there were people everywhere. This is just one stretch of road that doesn’t take a hell of alot of traffic in comparison to other main roads and I can only imagine how many were on the other main highways around the country. The government really needs to pull their head out of the sand and take notice, I can’t imagine any of these people will be voting labour ever again and for every protester there must be at least another 10 that agree with them but couldn’t make it. Its a pity National want to do vaccinations in schools, they could pick up alot of votes if they were to campaign against the mandates. Alot of people are saying Labour are destroying the country but going by what I saw yesterday I say Labour are destroying themselves if they choose to ignore these people.

    Have a good look around and see how many people on here voted for Winston Peter’s and his party over the years just to keep National honest and the same can be said about Labour because like Peter’s people love her politics. People like you have forced National to the center for the vote and just like those same voters have forced Labour to do the same.
    I will bet you the same will happen at the next election because people can see Jacinda Ardern is for herself and can’t stand losing , so back to the center she will go to to make sure she has enough behind her to win a third term.
    There is no way Winston Peter’s will rise again and if you don’t vote National / Act Labour will Govern again.

  The first party to stand firmly on a policy of immediate removal of mandates and immediate removal of vax passports will pick up at least 10 points. At least.
  This move has no negative impact on “fighting the virus”. You can still get as many jabs as you want, still wear as many masks as you want, wash your hands repeatedly or stay at home – but you should be given a notice and a card when you buy your masks or get your jabs that clearly states:
  
  “THESE ACTIONS WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO CATCH COVID OR SPREAD IT TO OTHERS – IT MIGHT REDUCE YOUR SYMPTOMS”
  
  Then move on. It’s the easiest win for a political party in many years.

      Very very few are anti vax. The number of people opposed to vax in NZ has been constant for decades. This is different. These people are anti vax mandates and passports. It’s a huge difference.
      The fact that Brenda’s Branch Covidians think it’s acceptable to force people to inject themselves and their kids with experimental drugs, and to exclude them from society for failing to comply speaks volumes. This is the reality in NZ today, no matter how much you snipe from the sidelines and wave your pom poms.
      It’s a stark reminder of how fascism rises. We saw it in Nazi Germany, it starts with small things. It can escalate very quickly unless it is stopped. Brenda needs to be stopped, urgently.

        I know a lot of families who are very uneasy about having to vaccinate their children – pressure from school and sports groups made them cave. They are not anti-vaxxers at all, but are unhappy that they feel forced into this decision, and they are worried whether they made the right decision. Of all the parents of young(ish) children I know in this situation, all except one had voluntarily chosen to be vaccinated themselves, and that one not voluntarily vaccinated has been vaccinated because her workplace required it. These people are definitely not anti-vaxxers. Just anti-mandates, and especially anti-coercion from organisations jumping on the bandwagon imposing non-govt mandates.

Do you propose that a person exercising their rights is thereby “anti-community” in some way, and should be punished for it, because I cannot see how they are, nor why they should be, respectively (in fact, the “anti-community” party consists of those who wish to negate the rights of members of the community).
        
        Opponents of mandates are pro-rights fundamentally, as opposed to “anti-mandate” which is the preferred framing, for obvious rhetorical reasons. They want to maintain the status quo of freedom from a coerced breach of their bodily autonomy, whereas those who support vaccines want to radically alter the status quo: therefore, they are the party that needs to justify themselves and make an argument for mandates and punishment for not compliance, not the former group.         If you are not vaxxed then you are affected by the mandates fundamentally because you are anti-vaxx, rather than “pro-rights” which is the preferred framing, for obvious rhetorical reasons.       I must of seen hundreds of signs and not once did I see anything about anti Vax. It was all about freedoms and dropping the mandates.
      If there is one thing covid has shown us it is that our system of government does not go far enough in controlling those who are in power. There needs to be an overhaul of parliaments power of what they can and can’t do. An example is the Bill of Rights act needs to be honored and in no way can be overridden. The last few years have shown us the failings of our free society and that many things have to change so no one can impede on our freedoms ever again. It’s time to clip these peoples wings, put them back in their box so to speak and leave the people to be. Politicians need to be scared of even mentioning such things let alone actually trying to implement them. They don’t seem to fear the people at all, quite the contrary.

The two North Island convoys headed to Wellington have merged. I’ve just seen a tweet from a friend on the convoy that the lead cars are going through Otaki, whilst the tail of the convoy is still passing through Levin.

Whatever your thoughts on this kind of protest, it’s most certainly captured the interest and support of a large number of New Zealanders.

I would like to understand your reasoning, because I don’t see why people shouldn’t fly the flag if they want to. Which is fascinating. The Green Party defines people that way – a male and female leader.

JAG embarked on a “pay equality” drive in the state sector based entirely around “men” being paid more than “women”.

This is all very confusing.

The reality is that there are two genders. Male and Female. There are of course people born with ambiguous genitalia which is unfortunate. But AFAIK their gender can usually be determined by chromosome analysis.

A high school student who is “male” does not become “female” simply because he declares that.

However, these are simply my opinions. And I am clearly in the minority which is fine. If most parents agreed with me, it would be impossible for one of the largest high schools in Canterbury to make these changes.

    The school has also abolished the role of deputy student leaders. Here’s Horgan on that:

  It seems utterly bizarre that the western world appears, by and large, to have simply accepted almost without question that a male can say “I feel I am a woman” and, lo and behold, he IS one. He is what he feels like. And if you question that, well you’re transphobic.
  
  And yet … just last week, there was the story of a transgender swimmer who beat the next best swimmer by a record 38 seconds at a competition in Ohio last year – around a full lap. Leading the US competitive swimming’s governing body to rethink its eligibility criteria for transgender athletes, following this utter farce.
  
  I don’t know that you ARE in the minority, Benedict. As cmm says, it is far too easy to brow-beat and bully people into compliance and submission, leading them to say in public what is the politically-correct accepted line. Because to do otherwise would inevitably lead to scorn, derision, loud cries of “Bigot! Hater!”, and it’s just easier to say what everybody wants to hear.
  
  For me, former athlete Caitlyn Jenner – who just happens to be transgender – has nailed it when she says:
  
  “All of this is woke world that we’re living in right now is not working. I feel sorry for the other athletes that are out there, especially at Penn or anyone she’s competing against, because in the woke world you have to say, ‘Oh my gosh, this is great.’ No it’s not.”

  I would not be happy with this – and I suspect a majority would probably not support this, even if they say they do in certain circles. What is happening is that a very small cohort of people are managing to increasingly drive the agenda on such topics. The school Principal presents the decision as a decision based on merit – i.e. it allows them to pick the best of the best. In today’s world that seldom happens and it is more likely to be about giving more scope to ‘tick the right boxes’ in the appointment of the student leadership team. The Principal also roles off old tropes such as having a head boy and head girl as amounting to a “colonial structure” – yawn.

Daily cases numbers – warning: a little boring as hell – but are experts doing a number on us?

Four students test positive in Hawke’s Bay, cases drop for second straight day as 188 new COVID infections announced – Newshub, yesterday evening

Saturday February 5 : 243 (record) community cases from tests total (last 24 hours): 21,471
Sunday February 6 : 208 community cases, tests 16,873
Monday February 7 : 188 cases, tests 12,830

If you have 10 cases from 2,000 tests it is plain to see that is 5 cases per one thousand, dividing number of cases, 10, by number of thousands, 2, gives of course 5.
So using the above figures you get, per thousand rates of –

Sat : 11.31 cases per 1,000 tests (243 divided by 21.471 thousand)
Sun : 12.32 cases per 1,000 tests
Mon : 14.65 cases per 1,000 tests

So the daily rate per 1,000 is increasing, and Mondays 14.65 multiplied by Saturday’s 21.471 thousands (if Monday’s cases were derived from the same number of tests) would give 314 cases not 188

Whether it is “covid fatigue” or “covid fear” – that “a mild cold” may take you and your family out of work for 2-3 weeks (needing enough plonk, baked beans and of course toilet paper for that period) – however whatever the cause: if tests “plummet”, cases must likewise “plummet”
While the actual infection or spread rate increases

Experts may be horrified at the simplistic calculation above, given multiple variables, but the numbers are Ministry of Health figures, and it is quite plain what is done with them – transparent and with integrity.

What is really a little horrifying is that health experts themselves have not done anything with them.

  It would be interesting to see who is getting tested voluntarily. I suspect it will be the retired, health compromised and government and local employees and those that can work from home on full pay.
  From conversations i hear, young or healthy people who cant work from home and stand to lose money through isolation are simply not scanning nor getting tested. Its clear the experts are working this out as well but woffle around the point- its covid fatigue!

  There are of course other factors too, but they are probably less likely to change as fast.
  
  For example behaviour changes. As people cotton onto the fact that they will get locked up for up to 3 weeks, they will be less inclined to get tested unless they feel sick. When that happens, there will be a lot of infected people hiding from being tested.

  When the latest set of rules were announced my initial gut reaction was that this was an own goal. People would stop testing and contact tracing to avoid the onerous result of a positive test or contact.
  
  I am stunned by the number of people, including those on the radio, publicly state that this is their intention. Of course the result is ‘good’ for labour as they can trot out the low number of cases even though the water testing results will likely tell a completely different story. On water tests, ever notice that they never give any detail around these, just nebulous ‘matched with what we would expect in this area’ statements.

  It’s sort of a reasonable analysis, but you need to look at what drives the number of daily tests. Since tests are not only voluntary, they are self selected. i.e. Sick people go for tests, so a reduction in the number of tests implies fewer people are feeling sick, or too lazy or too busy with the long weekend, or some such factor. Then the most likely to get tested are the people who are the most sick. Assuming this sort of behaviour, I would expect the Cases/1000 tests to increase a bit as the number of tests go down. To the point where you could get a rate of 100/1000 because only 100 really sick people came for testing and 10 of them had Covid.
  To get a true Cases/1000 tests value you need to have random testing, which we clearly don’t have.

  It’s like saying Labour represents all other NZ’ers … or that National represents all other NZ’ers (imagine the howls of outrage, furious keyboard typing and angry street protests from the Left, especially the Hard-Left including violence, should someone from National continuously claim that they represent them)!
  
  The Maori Party usually attract 1-2% in polls (or 1.18% in the last election), they are pretty much the mouthpiece for Radicals and the Hard-Left, which are minority (even if they do attract a lot of media coverage eg from “radical” academics etc).
  
  Most Maori, the majority, don’t wish to live in the past and are not radical. They, like most other NZ’ers simply want to get on with life, raise a family, have a roof over their head etc.
  
  Mind you younger Maori can be influenced by these radicals proposing “utopia”, that’s why it is important for Politicians and the MSM to be “accurate, fair and balanced” in their reporting of Maori Sovereignty issues, eg give both sides.
  
  For example, Maori activists (and uncritical MSM) say the South Island belonged to Maori prior to 1840. But what does that mean, when we are talking about a SI Maori population pre-1840 in the thousands? And did they live over the entire SI? No they didn’t! They mainly lived in small groups near the coast.
  
  So promoting “giving back all of NZ to Maori (the view of the radicals) is somewhat nonsensical, if one thinks about it.
  
  On the other hand, if Maori lived in concentrated areas (such as Northland, the Waikato and the East Coast (Gisborne/Hawkes Bay areas) etc etc, well sure perhaps there could be claims that could have some validity (eg when land was dubiously appropriated) – so why not concentrate efforts (to resolve conflict) where the genuine issues are – not a blanket approach of “everything” as preached by the radicals.
  
  Then to cap things off, Maori pre-1840 were in a state of perpetual warfare, where tribes overran others (or made alliances), and over time the “ownership” of the land changed due to conquest.
  
  In other words, trying to solve land issues is fraught with extreme difficulties, discomfort and unintended consequences (even amongst Maori tribes themselves), if we as a nation are to continually look back into the past and remain stuck there.
  
  The Waitangi Tribunal has one job to do, which is to resolve past injustices, not invent new causes and propose radical change.
  
  The only winners if this comes to happen will be the elites (both Maori and non-Maori), is that the sort of future we want for our nation?

  I’ve been thinking about this a little bit lately. The British Monarch is the Crown and has a resident representative, the Governor General. The ToW is an agreement between the “Crown” and Maori leaders (or their respective decedents more accurately). So why are the temporarily hired day to day Office Administrators, who have to reapply to the GG for their job every 3 years ( usually with help from some lackey these days), calling all the shots? Shouldn’t the discussions be between the GG (representing the Monarch’s view) and Maori if there is a change to be made to the ToW? The same sort of thing applies at regional and local body level. While I’m not necessarily a fan of republicanism as it has it’s own issues, it seems that the almost universal abdication of real governance in favour of self interest is stuffing this country. Self interest, of course, isn’t something new in governance behaviour but I can’t recall it being taken to such heights in my lifetime.

    That and his gains were likely made in part by international money printing chasing a place to rest. That sharemarkets went up crazy amounts was a factor of low returns in the banks and piles of printed money chasing a limited number of shares. My shares did well last year too.

The inexorable rise of wokism, invariably accompanied if not fueled by stupidity, continues apace in New Zealand, at least in Canterbury. Lincoln High School has ended the tradition of appointing a head girl and head boy, replacing them with a “non-gender specific team”.

As if this wasn’t stupid enough, they now have 4 in the team instead of heads and deputies. “We got rid of that layer,” Horgan said. “It’s part of getting rid of that hierarchical sort of thing, which is quite a traditionalist, colonial approach.” Kylie “Karen”Horgan is the Deputy Principal by the way. They now have 4 “heads” but it’s not hierarchical – hmmm.

This indoctrinator also said “We have got a lot of gender-neutral students, probably a higher percentage than most schools, which is great, we celebrate that.” I don’t think having a higher percentage of mentally-unwell, gender-dysphoric, very confused teenagers than other schools is anything to celebrate, but that’s probably just my traditional, colonial approach coming through.

By the way, in an effort to dismantle the traditional colonial structures that are getting in the way of these young people becoming who they think they want to be, the school previously changed the uniforms to make them “gender-neutral” – the uniform now consists of a shirt, jacket and tie for all students. Nothing traditional or colonial about that.

  Every social structure in the world, colonial or not, has the concept of “leaders”, “chiefs” etc.
  
  If anything, Western colonialism breaks that down by introducing democracy where the leaders/chiefs etc serve the people.
  
  In most other systems the chief/king/whatever has complete control over everyone’s lives and can take what (s)he wants – including a person’s life.
  
  I wonder whether Mzzz Horgan is a history teacher?

  It’s not ‘illegal’ to be fat either, but if my school had a high proportion of overweight students I would be wondering what was going wrong in the community. I wouldn’t be celebrating that my school was particulary fatty friendly 🙂

  Loddenthinks: Of course the Maori tribal system (pre-colonial) was very hierarchical. Some may think this was a good thing. Millions of Hindus live in a hierarchical society to this very day. As far as reducing the hierarchy of the administrators in a secondary school that would be merely cosmetic. One of those has to take responsibility in the end for the stuff-ups. It would be interesting to know if the school is bulk funded and allowed to divi up the salaries according to the group think.

  I thought the intent of carvings (pounamu, bone, wood) worn around the neck is they’re spiritual and worn against the skin. Many are blessed for the wearer when presented. Why, when wandering the mean-streets of Wellington or sitting on the train do I notice they’re invariably worn outside multiple layers of clothing/ties when sported by someone with pink/blue hair or an Ministry of Education branded laptop?

So there we go folks.

I am completely over our politicians. They’re all spineless gimps.

It is very easy to be pro-vaccine but anti-mandate, but no politician has the courage to say it.

    What has the majority got to do with my personal health choice? We don’t mandate that everyone should eat meat just because the majority believe it’s good for everyone! Silly example maybe, but the concept is the same. We allow minorities to make their own decisions and there are probably a myriad of examples across the world where minority decisions are supported by politicians even if their personal view is different.
    Hell, the majority of us believe that fossil fuels a good for society and don’t cause global warming, but her majesty is trying to ban their use in NZ. How do you justify supporting a minority in the one instance but not in the other?

  I don’t even like Anti Vaccination as a term which is obviously used to link this novel technology to older more trusted procuts. Anti Transport or means you are opposed to the entire category of transport not just helicopters.

  1. Anti Vax (a person who generally doesn’t like vaccination prefers natural remedies)
  2. Anti MRNA ( a person who supports existing vaccination technology but is hesitant about these particular MRNA vaccines safety and efficacy profile and long term risks or are waiting for it to be fully approved)

  Seymour was the reason for ACT voters to vote ACT, really? The only important difference between ACT and National was that ACT was a Libertarian Party. Yes ACT is economically slightly more conservative than National but the real difference was their Libertarian view that it was inherent in the nature of human beings as individuals that they are the owners of their own lives and must be free to act according to their own judgments. My gripe with them started when they went with the ETS scam, National signed us up for that. Now David Seymour has abandoned ACT’s Libertarian principle to appeal to the government media-controlled polls there is no real difference between National and Act anymore and without principles it has become a personality vote.
  Polls and popularity are fickle masters as David Seymour will find out.
  I predict ACT without holding on to its core principles will be gone WITH Seymour.
  He won’t win a personality contest with Ardern or Luxon.
  They need to get rid of him and get someone who stands for and will defend the core principles of the party.

Had a minor operation a couple of weeks ago. Had three RAT tests because i’m not fully vaxxed. One for the consultation, one at the hospital for the surgery, and one for post-consultation. If I had tested positive no doubt I would be recorded as an unvaxxed hospitalisation. People with a vax pass are not required to test. This skews the hospitalisation statistics massively because you don’t get recorded as a vaxxed covid hospitalisation case unless you get sick with covid.

  I took my wife to Middlemore A & E a couple of weeks ago and the first thing they did was give her a PCR test.
  It was the same for everyone.
  Both of us are triple vaccinated.
  Subsequently she required an operation.
  However.
  I was with her for a good deal of the time, but wasn’t tested.
  A lot of people come and go, but nobody seemed to be tested.

The most dangerous man in NZ right now has to be Adrian Orr, Governor of the Reserve bank. His lack of judgement in the management of the money supply is going to have damaging long term consequences; he alone has made easy money available to banks (the RB operates a funding- for lending programme – doling out $7.78B dollars to banks last year) for lending thus fueling the house price boom. He has overseen the the printing of billions of dollars (all debt) for Grant Robertson to squander. But he takes no responsibility; he is full of hubris; has an autocratic style that has resulted in 12 (more or less) of his top staff jumping ship. And seems to be answerable to noone.
The only commentator with her eye on the ball is Jenny Ruth, writing for BusinessDesk (her articles are behind a paywall but worth reading); she has accused Orr of ‘professional malpractice’ because of his denial and apparent unawareness of impending high inflation and avoidance of responsibilty.

  Nonsense. During that period Paul the octopus would have done at least as well if not better. One of the biggest bull markets ever. Driven by massive QE after the 2008 financial crisis when many major outfits should have been left to burn but weren’t.
  As you say, his policies have helped create the housing crisis, money is going to fixed assets, not productive enterprise. Orr is a fraud. Good on him for getting away with it, but under the spotlight he is a fraud.

I was at the convoy yesterday when it arrived into Picton. OMFG. Smiling, shouting, tooting happy people. Not a mask in sight. Pure joy.

What was most interesting was watching the drivers and passengers. Young, old, hippies, super straight looking types, loads of families, Maori, white, black, about half the vehicles had a dog in view, old wrecks, massive trucks, new camper vans, vans etc. there was no one demographic. What there was was joy and unity.

The International Student Visa category will reopen for processing from October, reports the NZ Herald.

This will enable international students across the industry to enter for the beginning of 2023.

Unanswered: will this re-open the student-visa residency rort, whereby the course providers are able to throw in New Zealand residency to their foreign students.

Will they again sell entry to and settlement in NZ as much as, or more than, education?

If anyone benefits from entry and citizenship sale it should be the State, representing present citizens.

    For the would-be citizens, this is pretty much like an import or sales duty, like that on alcohol or tobacco. That duty goes to the State, not to bottle stores and dairies.
    
    The student visa rort has also distorted immigration policy. Intelligent developed countries compete strongly for the most able and promising students.
    
    Our NZ system has tended to bring in young people purportedly to study subjects such as IT, but who soon moved into lesser skilled work such as counter staff at whiteware stores, selling electricity door-to-door, making or delivering hamburgers, driving taxis.

        From what I remember of Gordon Allport’s The Nature of Prejudice, the latest wave of immigrants to the United States is subject to the most discrimination, followed by the previous wave, and so on.
        
        African Americans, who were brought in enslaved, and indigenous Americans, like Maori, I presume, are outside the immigration tiers, I imagine.
        
        Student-visa rorts are about fairness of selection of those allowed in, and about who in the host country profits or otherwise benefits from the selections.

Just checked out the mandate protest:

Murphy St completely blocked, all other streets flowing fairly normally, including the main bus thoroughfare Lambton Quay – Thorndon Quay.

A couple of big bikes in attendance but no nothing to suggest gangs.

Disappointed but unsurprised to see Luxon stand side by side with Ardern in refusing to meet them, pretending to be “too busy” and conflating “anti mandate” with “anti vax” to appear less controversial.

Where is the ACT party? If they won’t meet this protest then they are libertarians in name only.

    There was a weak, politically correct mandate protest march late last year from civic Square to parliament. Police escort, road closures…. it was completely ignored by the govt.
    
    The lesson was clear, asking nicely gets you ignored. So now they are asking more forcefully.
    
    All of this could have been avoided if they had been listened to, back when the govt first decided to exclude the unvaxxed from society, and the majority was okay with that.
    
    They weren’t listened to, they were thrown under the bus, so now here we are. I don’t blame them one little bit.

      I’m not sure that interrupting the usual daytime traffic of ordinary working Wellingtonians will generate much sympathy for the cause of these folks. In my experience, the main result of protests is an increase in the self-satisfaction of the protestors, corresponding with a decrease in the esteem (if there was any to start with) everyone else has for the protestors or their cause.   They are talking of a “green hydrogen” venture to obtain hydrogen without using electricity generated with carbon resources.
  
  The Invercargill free newspaper, Southland Express, said that Ngai Tahu ki Murihiku and Fortescue Future Industries were “one” of the groups interested in Manapouri power after 2024.
  
  Ngai Tahu’s interest won’t be unrelated to Maori moves to take ownership of NZ water resources. These would include Lake Manapouri, which drives the generators that provide the Bluff smelter with electricity.

    Canterbury consumers can’t match the smelter as a customer: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, round the year, one bill.
    
    Besides, NZ will soon desperately need the $1 billion a year or so of exports that come from the smelter, plus reasonably priced aluminium a key raw material of many NZ industries.
    
    And if not a smelter, a hydrogen plant would pay more than consumers about 600km away. Again, steady 24-hour demand round the clock and round the calendar.

Roy Morgan have released another poll today, with polling conducted throughout January. And for the first time for a several years, National (35%) is now polling better than Labour (33%). This poll has National/Act five percentage points ahead of Labour/Greens.

At 33%, Labour would lose at least 20 MP’s. That’s going to make Labour’s back bench very, very nervous, as they see their tenure at the trough slipping away. Expect to see that nervousness flow through into some unruly behaviour over the next few weeks and months, as Labour’s back bench suddenly tries to be relevant and engaged.

A Maori organisation recently sent a maori children’s group to perform in Dubai on 1st Feb. I don’t know how anyone could be so stupid to arrange such a trip at this time.

Now many of these children are stuck in Dubai, because, well covid. And, the parents and people associated with the group are demanding the government do something.

I’m dumbstruck as to why they sent these kids in the first instance. Adults have trouble travelling, let alone a group of children.

And, presumably this group took MIQ spots ahead of people who have far greater needs , such as life and death!!

I’d love to know who paid for these children to travel to Dubai too. If it was the taxpayer, I wonder if a bunch of white kids could get the same deal?

It’s a confusing article but it sounds like everyone in the troupe has covid. What do they reckon the efficacy of the vaccine is exactly? 0%.

Very sad to hear that all of our major political parties refuse to meet with anti mandate protestors and listen to their concerns. There will be a backlash for this and it wont play into the Center right blocs hand.
