Dancing with the Stars was, before this season, often wonderful family entertainment. Memorable moments included former All Black Glen Osborne’s inspired and sublimely beautiful waltz. William Wairua was a wonderful dancer. And then there were the “so bad they were good” contestants such as David Seymour and the late Paul Holmes.

Sadly it seems the show now resembles a university revue. The overly praised same sex couple, the respectable British judge that turns out to be a drag queen and another judge that resembles a homeless person. Last night we had an interminable exposition of all things gay including the idea that if your father is homosexual and his father is homosexual then you will be homosexual. An idea absurd on its face.

Sadly our new woke overlords have taken hold of DWTS and turned it into an unwatchable parody. At least we still have the option of turning off this camp display.
My other concern is that we are indirectly paying for this travesty through NZ on Air?

  Or the Chinese style where Cindy gets to choose the parties and candidates that the rest of us can vote for.

    Dame Anne Salmond, Distinguished Professor in anthropology at the University of Auckland, and 2013 New Zealander of the Year, has been writing a series on the Treaty for Newsroom. Today, she wrote about the principle of equal representation.
    
    It turns out Maori governance, as observed by some of the first non-Maori here, was as unsophisticated as our current kind. Dame Anne quotes Francis Dart Fenton (of the Fenton agreement which established Rotorua) as observing that, “No system of government that the world ever saw can be more democratic than that of the Maoris. The chief alone has no power…No individual enjoys inﬂuence or exercises power, unless it originates with the mass and is expressly or tacitly conferred by them.”

        It’s funny, I never hear these sorts of things mentioned. I only seem to hear about the ‘fairy people’ stuff, living in total harmony with each other and the environment and how they’ve got great ancient lessons and teachings for us to apply to modern issues.
        
        The varying classes of slaves? Correct slave management? How to treat the survivors of those you’ve just raided and slaughtered? How to select only the choicest women from your vanquished? Correct slave ownership transfer protocols? Slave marriage management?
        
        Goodness gracious, will this ‘knowledge system’ find it’s way into our school curriculum under Maoritanga Studies or Matauranga Maori?

So the first fifteen minutes of 3 News last night was taken up with a bullshit story about sea level rise, featuring a bunch of ‘experts’ we’d never heard of before. Apparently sea levels around NZ are going to rise twice as fast as previously forecast because of something they made up. There would seem to be a gravy train for so called ‘sea level rise experts’ and they are trying to get the insurance industry to price all coastal dwellers out of their houses.
What they failed to mention is that the surf invaded the main street of Hokitika in about 1865, and it happened again in 1914, sweeping many commercial buildings into the sea. But it hasn’t happened since and Revill St. is still in the same place. So it’s not sea level rise.
TV3 is planning more of this crap for tonight. Maybe that would be enough for me to give Government TV another chance but the mixed-up language would probably confuse me.

  What I would be interested in seeing is sea level variation over the last 100 years to act as a predictor of the future rather than the projections of this group. The scientist from this group this morning interviewed by Hosking says these new models are projections not predictions. Found this comparison or projections vs predictions: “Prediction” conveys a sense of certainty while “projection” is associated more with the possibility of something happening given a certain set of plausible, but not necessarily probable, circumstances.
  An insurance guy on the radio last week said you will still be able to insure these coastal properties for all types of insurance except sea level rise, so shouldn’t be too risky to buy and insure and take the risk.

    Well, what they’re not mentioning is the sea levels have risen some 120m since the last ice age. This last amount, whether it is happening faster or not, is just more of the same.
    
    This isn’t a humanitarian catastrophe, this is normal.
    
    They also don’t talk about how the polar bears seemed to survive the 120m rise, as did the coral, the penguins and most other things.
    
    They don’t mention that vast areas of land went from unsustainable, to temperate food baskets. They don’t mention that the last warm period (before the last ice age) had sea levels higher than today as well.
    
    It’s just normal, by archaeological standards

  We all know that climate predictions are inevitably over blown just as Covid predictions were. But some of the stupid will buy this latest big lie. Geobbels would have been proud.

If nothing near as bad as the models suggest actually eventuates then it looks like it’s true. It’s like watching a bad magician.     I love the fact that we can download the raw data and reproduce the graph. Then insert a trend line. ALL trend line types show the same result: Sea Level Rise has been linear since we had consistent data. I used from Jan 1945 to Jan 2020, so 75 years of data and the average rise is 2.7mm/year.
    So 300mm in 110 years, at best.

      You are correct. The oldest tidal gauge is in NY and the 200 or so years of recordings made show a linear rise. The IPCC have a graph where they have taken a flat section of the graph of sea level followed by a bit of catch-up (there is always some variation around a linear graph) and then grafted a satellite record at the end to produce a image that shows an increase in rate off rise. The satellite measures something completely different! This is how dishonest they are.

    check out subsidence corrected sea level rise around the world (tide gauges corrected by nearby long term subsidence established by GPS). Wellington harbour true sea level rise is about 0.5mm/year over long term (2.5mm/year of subsidence). Sydney harbour similarly 1mm/year true sea level rise.

    Can be differences in rates of rise and fall around the world due to few 100m of ocean nearest surface undergoing warming or cooling that changes it’s density (and therefore height) relative to other parts of world ocean.

    So presumably if the sea is supposed to rise 30 cms around the coast of NZ it is also going to have to rise around the rest of the world at similar levels given that the worlds ocean level have some geographical variations.
    I have had a quick calculation as to how much extra water will then be in the oceans. There is not enough water in the world to have such a rise in sea levels. Unless all this sea rise is only going to occur around Li’l Old New Zealand.

  Sea levels can only rise if there is sufficient water held in those pesky glaciers and icecaps.
  And every time the sea level is raised by a mil it takes virtually trillions of liters more to raise the level another mil.

  Appears to be topic of the month for Ardern’s communications dept. Seems to be applicable to any MSM outlet that’s receiving significant covid media bribe fund monies that they must run this theme. I guess Ardern will rotate topics. Zero road toll will be another topic.   Mate!! The flooding came from the fairly regular storms in the southern alps that caused the Buller river to rise a bit more than usual.

  I’ve lived by the Coast for all of my long life and the sea level hasn’t risen one iota. Of course we have extreme weather events and king tides which do a lot of damage but the sea soon settles back down to where it has always been. There have been extreme weather events all through the ages long before the industrial age. I have a switch in my brain which turns on every time these ‘climate idiots’ spout their nonsense. As if we could be so clever as to change the climate!!??

    2023 is next year! I can safely assure you that Kauri are not extinct or even dying in the West Coast they are thriving. Since 2017 the local environmental scientist leading the rahui put forward a public parliamentary submission that an NGO they have set up should run the regional park, and be funded to manage the science and have full legal enforcement powers of the public park and any tree they deemed infected. The latest submission to parks by Iwi shows what was always the end goal. People are to be shut out of the centre of the regioanl park and the interior tracks permanently closed and a high usage track created around the perimeter. The submission called people questioning the plan “ecoracists”. This is exactly what the UN Agenda 21 wildlinks conspiracy theorists had predicted.

      That kauri dieback is spread by humans was always an unproven hypothesis; Dieback occurs in locations well away from tracks. The spreading vector is likely to be wild pigs that root around trees but that does not suit the narrative and does not justify the authoritarian people movement control measures. There has been ample opportunity for spread of dieback by trampers from the Waitakeres the the Hunuas; hasn’t happened. No pigs in the Hunuas, no dieback.

      The “Covid Crisis” and “Climate Crisis” are intimately related, and are really two sides of the same coin. Together they will be used to reshape society.   I always think,
  1. we may be hit by an extinction level event (meteor) too.
  2. IF we caused this…..how can we fix it?

  Also, since I actually deal in measurement equipment.
  Is sea level rising?
  How did they measure it?
  The satellites they use to measure this.
  It is normally at an altitude of less than 1000 km but could be as low as 160 km above Earth – which is low compared to other orbits, but still very far above Earth’s surface.
  So
  160Km distance from the measurement position.
  160 000m or 16 000 000cm. or 160 000 000mm
  They are telling us
  They can measure 16mm of sea level rise…..really?
  A couple of questions.
  How many measurements do you take at each point of measure?
  How many points around the globe do you take measurements?
  How often?
  Are local conditions, at the time, taken into account?
  How many satellites are used and are they all calibrated the same?
  The most accurate forms of measure on earth are weighing machines and they can’t measure to this accuracy.
  eg 160g to 0.000 001g (generally the best is 160g to 0.0001g) even if in specialized equipment 0.000 01g, this is still 10 times less accurate than they are claiming.

  What is usually missed in this discussion is that the measurement is relative to land level, and given that our entire crust is itself floating on a molten core, land levels can and do change.
  
  Stockholm is a good example. Sea level there is receding at 3.72mm/year because the land mass is rising.

Really?

So over the next 100 years there’s going to be 30cm of subsidence in Chch.
They also expect there to be 60cm or actual rise by 2100 (if so, it better get a move on). More likely, most of “rise” by 2100 will be due to subsidence.

Akaroa will, apparently, have 30cm of rise by 2040 (most of that due to subsidence, not rising). Great. We can test that within our lifetimes. I doubt that will age any better than Al Gore’s claims of an ice-free North pole by 2012.

On the other hand, but not written about in the article, some areas have negative sea level rise. Kaikora rose over 2 metres, so is good for sea level rise for 700 years before it is back to 2000 levels. Wellington also has negative sea level rise since 1850 due to the huge uplift in 1855 and other events. At 3mm per year it will also be hundreds of years before Wellington gets “sea level rise” and, most likely, there will be other uplift events during that time.

This conflation of sea level rise (if it is really happening) and subsidence is Junk Science! It is bullshit. It needs to stop. Especially if they’re going to cherry-pick.

The same is happening on all the Pacific Islands. Every one of those islands has been thrust up from the depths by forces deep in the earth. Almost all are a peak of a volcano. When people measure “sea level rise” at these locations, what are they really measuring? What is water rising/falling and what is land rising/sinking?

“Programme co-leader Professor Tim Naish, of Victoria University of Wellington, said 20 years ago it was thought sea-level rise was like pouring water into a bathtub – if you put more water in, it rises uniformly around the world, but Naish said it is actually much more complicated.”

I dispute that. We’ve known about uplift and subsidence for centuries (eg. Wellington earthquake in 1855) and gradual uplift/subsidence due to tectonics since the 1970s. He is correct though that there has been an oversimplification.

Also this makes it look like we have a bigger risk from geological factors than climate change/CO2 emissions, which is probably true but makes it hard to say we need carbon sink forests, low emission cars etc

        No, not at all. I love listening to and learning from actual experts, not the shills who find results that those paying them demand.
        The covid circus has been a revelation to me. It took a few months for enough data to come in, but as I suspected from quite early on, we were lied to by the “experts” who were give free access to all of the mainstream platforms. Those highly qualified people who did not follow the script were censored, deplatformed, smeared, gaslit and demonised. It stunk to high hell at the time which is why I had doubts early on.
        It is abundantly clear now that those people were the ones speaking the truth, the Bakers, Wiles and Hendys of this world weren’t just wrong, they deliberately lied to us. Empirical evidence shows that pretty much all of the covid “conspiracies”, lab leak theory, that the vaccines don’t work, that the trials were fraudulent, these have all been proven to be true. All of the claims about vaccine efficacy and that it was not an experiment, that it was tested and approved. All lies.

      I should add that at least some progress is being made. These types of projections are based on scenarios of social economic and emissions futures.
      
      At least they are no longer using the completely implausible RCP8.5H+ invented by NIWA and MfE to really scare everyone, and have now retreated to SSP2-4.5 as the likely one and SSP3-7.0 as the “high” scenario.

  Tidal gauges show the same rising sea level today as over hundred years ago. If the sea levels were rising due to melting polar ice then the gauges would record an acceleration in sea levels rise compared to one hundred years ago. They dont. They are the very small rise compared to hundred years ago.

Sea level rise is the old bogie that journalists use when they cannot be bothered finding out about real issues. The world changes all the time and New Zealand with it. However people who buy properties on the beach front are asking for trouble when there is an extreme weather event. Floods are a regular event and can be devastating.

Not only does the Treaty seem not to mention the word ‘Aotearoa’ (and I’d have thought it should), nor does it seem to accomodate ‘the Others’ – the now 85 percent of the population – unless indirectly in Article 3, in that “Maori will have will have citizenship equal to, and with the protection of, British subjects” – they, “subjects”, being Us – as in “They Are Us”

    She comes from Waiheki, she spent lock down at Waiheki when she scarpered from here during the campaign, on Waiheki radio she said she was going to win the seat and it is a place holder seat, i have heard not one person say they voted for her, while Nats had a great candidate, and boundaries moved hard to farming land south of Dunedin , and the margin is now back over 10000, that margin was down to 3000 , i simply do not believe this useless woman could charm the farming community where she was unwelcome during the campaign

  When we lived in Wellington she worked in a few Thai restaurants and got to know a lot of Thai restaurant owners.
  The were no separate menus with delicacies the SPCA would cry over.
  Can’t speak for other ethnic restaurants.
  I asked a fish and chip shop owner in St Heliers Bay what was in his sausages. He said he didn’t know.

Just how many ‘Booster-Shots’ are we expecting?

My partner’s mum has become a little upset by what she sees as constant bullying by the MOH to get her Booster-Shot.
For the last couple of months, she’s been subjected to numerous txts and phone calls, all in an attempt to cajole her into getting the 3rd Jab.
TBH, the only reason she got the first two, was because Liquorland insisted on a ‘Vax Pass’ to gain entry into their stores.

Then on Friday, she received an email directly from Ashley himself.
Not only was it a personal message imploring her to get boosted, but it also included a Video co-starring Dr Siouxsie Wiles!

      1. Wont reduce cars driving between Waiheke and Auckland
      2. Will increase the size of the loss rate-taxpayers will need to cover. But no worries its just other people’s money being spent.
      
      On the environmental front, the ferries will increase dirty coal imports required for electricity generation. Just as electric cars do. Not to mention all the harm caused mining the metals required for battery manufacture. In short an environmental disaster.

  Myocarditis and other related heart problems as a result of Covid vaccination were known and declared as a potential side effect a long time ago and were never a conspiracy theory which has now bitten the dust as you suggest.
  The study you link to gives some results which show possible events from the Pfizer vaccine at about 7 per 100000 which translates to o.oo7% which is infinitely small but obviously of concern to those out there who are either paranoid or grasping at any small straw to try and bolster their fringe positions.

Most days the putrid stench from the compromised Bromley sewage plant hangs over the eastern and Central city area, and on the odd occasion the wind takes it over to the more affluent suburbs of Merivale and Fendalton. It is both a mental and physical health threat. The CCC and Environment Canterbury are big on talk and pitiful on action. NZ calls itself a developed 1st world country. Joke.

  When the prevailing winds did not work we would catch a whiff which even then was putrid.

  Swifty – it is all a matter of what you choose to put your faith in. Because these speculations on the origins of life and species are not truely science – they are theories ie The Theory of Evolution, The Big Bang Theory.
  
  The scientific discovery of knowledge is not in dispute eg I am sure the scientists are correct in stating that some of the building blocks of our living bodies have been found on a space rock. But when this is used to propose a theory that life on earth came about from space rocks mixing in primordial gloop for billions of years, that remains a theory. It cannot be proven. Alternative theories and arguments against the theory can also be proposed. So ultimately you subscription to these theories to explain your origins are philosophical, faith based, beliefs.
  
  Personally, I find it hard to comprehend how one can believe in life and the sheer complexity of life with so many codependent and interconnected pieces needing to have developed precisely and simultaneously for the system to be able to exist. This is very much counter to the science of the laws of thermodynamics that state, without energy everything moves into disorder/chaos. The evidence around me shows me it takes a lot of creative energy for us to progress. As such, my faith in God has a more scientific basis to me than your alternative. I agree that this God loving us deeply and caring about us all as individuals is quite hard to believe, but for me it is awe inspiring.
  
  I believe with God, that if you have an open mind, when you seek you will find, when you knock the door will be opened to you.

My personal observations suggest that a 30cm rise in sea-level would still leave a reasonable safety level.
The estuary/lagoon area would seem likely to be able to cope with such a rise if it did happen.

  At the current rate of Sea Level Rise of 2-3 mm per annum, a 30 cm rise will take 100-150 years to happen.

Jacinda will have to get rid of this mask wearing nonsense soon because it won’t be long before people wonder what the hell she’s talking about when she finally does it. I was down at Botany shops last night and loads of people (young and old) weren’t wearing them – not even to hold their chin up.
Same again today at Meadowlands shops – not so many, but compliance has always been pretty high down there in the past.

Excellent speech from Christopher Luxon this afternoon in the run-up to the Budget. The whol speech is worth a read, but this excerpt stands out:

While Government spending gets lots of attention at Budget time, there’s often little focus on the wider economic settings that actually drive prosperity.

It’s those settings I want to focus on today.

National talks a lot about business and the economy – but not for their own sakes.

We want a strong economy, because that is how we drive prosperity for all Kiwis.

A strong economy is how we lift wages, grow jobs, and create choices for families.

A strong economy, with incomes growing faster than prices, is how Kiwis get ahead, and how we – as a country – can invest in the things that matter to all of us.

Like delivering world-class healthcare, education that works for everyone, a police force that keeps our communities safe, or protecting our environment.

Labour’s economic approach isn’t working because they believe government, and in particular government spending, drives prosperity.

I utterly reject that view.

It’s the reason Labour haven’t been focused on the microeconomic reforms needed to grow our economy.

National knows our future will be built on the hard work of Kiwis and businesses in communities up and down this country.

So we’re focused on policies to support these Kiwis and make it easier to have a go – easier to invest, easier to innovate, easier to employ and easier to take a punt – policies that will grow the pie for us all.

So today I want to outline a bit more about how we can kick-start and enlarge the engine-room of our economy to drive prosperity – the broader economic approach that National will implement to deliver strong, sustainable growth over the rest of this decade and beyond.

I see where another major Construction outfit in Wello….’Armstrong Downes’, has just gone into liquidation.
Leaving the poor old Subbies out of pocket again by the sound of it 🙁

Hopefully, it may mean we’ll be able to get some earlier action on the new roof for our Pergola, rather than having to wait until next October.

Fingers crossed, anyway.
