I expect exactly what she said; Doesn’t have the energy for what’s clearly going to be a tough fight – with I assumme the unstated proviso that she prefers to go out ‘on top’,rather than wait until there’s no other option – whenever that might be.

  Before Christmas she asked her ministers to re-consider their policies and priorities ready for the start of the new year. Some would have dug toes in and would have been too powerfully placed to yield to Jacinda’s wishes which from her point of view were required if Labour was to win the next election. So she chucked it in. Any replacement leader will either have similar problems or will be so pig headed as to lose votes. Compare with Jacinda’s situation in 2017 where she had complete freedom to mould the election campaign as she considered appropriate to win that election. Jacinda knows perfectly well that the overarching objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power to stay in power. Some senior members of her Government seem to have forgotten this. Yet they would be thinking that her gift of the gab would get Labour over the line.

Only a couple of weeks ago Jacinda said she was going to fight for Maori issues heading up to the elections.

So why has she now decided to resign?

We can all have our own opinion on why and no I don’t accept her reason that she has run out of energy.

I expect the complete capitulation of the Labour party with probably several members becoming PM and then stepping down one after the other.

October may not even be the date of the elections if things get worse with this lot governing the country.

June or July maybe?

Plus, I don’t think she has the personality to stand up to the maori faction … no surprise that maori are all heaping praise onto her. Because, she has enrichened the Maori elite more than any other PM.

She is rather thin skinned too, the abuse would have got to her.

I don’t think it was anywhere what Key had to put up with, and she brought a lot of it on herself by claiming to be the source of truth and not listening to prepared to talk to anyone that disagreed with her. She brought separatist policies into the country. She stole the council owned assets. It will take years for people to come to terms with what she did to the country

We know a few Labour MPs and ministers are not standing at the next election. This is the cherry on top and I wonder if we will see more not stand. I am thinking Robertson, Nash Damien O Connor. Maybe too a few back benchers who know their fate is sealed after this resignation. Oh dear, poor Labour !

A combination of bad polling, going from people fawning for selfies to raucus protests wherever she went and no stomach for the real hard work of policies of substance born from compromise and at least some collaboration with affected parties. Plus, based on what is trickling out in the US and UK re. Covid responses and negative impacts of lockdowns and vaccination policies, much of what Ardern was a global C19 picture child for will come back to haunt her and she’s getting out of what will become an increasingly hostile firing line.

  The recent news of the worst inflation on food in over 30 years would have added to the pile. Her core voters will be acutely sensitive to grocery prices and that frustration is going to come out.
