A few days ago in response to the fuel excise tax reductions I made the comment that the reduction would make no difference in road maintenance because the government would waste any extra money that would have come in.
Widogan asked me what I meant by waste, apart from spending up large and consultants and propaganda, I meant this;

  Good to know that this program includes construction of dedicated scooter lanes, which are the most suitable form of environmentally friendly urban (and hopefully also rural) transport, particularly suitable for elderly and otherwise handicapped citizens.

    Will lobby the Council to reinstate the hitching rail facility in the centre of town.
    Original hitching post will probably still be in the machinery museum-last used circa 1912.

      Gravelroad, assuming this is reported correctly … your horse and cart will be fine until the horse steps in a pothole and breaks it’s leg.
      
      Transport Minister Michael Wood has proposed changes to the way $2b of maintenance money is spent each year, which could mean swapping car parks for new bus lanes and cycleways – paid for with the money used to fix potholes, according to a briefing released to the Herald under the Official Information Act.
      
      Are these people serious? Are they really proposing to spend money building cycleways instead of repairing potholes?!

        A recent report indicated that over 50% of road user charges allocated for road maintenance was already being diverted to other transport projects such as cycleways and public transport, so their new policy is not new, just making it official.
        ACT & National should be all over the misuse of road user charges like a rash, given the appalling state of road in general across NZ.

  I wonder if the government has thought at all how this will affect the cities. I know they don’t really care but there will be a lot of service workers put out of jobs as people like me start to avoid the city like the plague.
  The bus service in Wellington is a joke, I get regular reports from my husband that while waiting for a Karori bus he sees 5 Wilton busses go past empty while the eventual Karori bus is too full to get on. They are short 100 drivers and no one wants to do the job, how do they think they will force us onto the bus?
  This is ideology over real world and it will crash down but by then Labour and The Greens will be safe in opposition leaving National/ACT to fix their mess.

    I think your hubby is affected by ‘my bus is always the last to arrive’ syndrome – by definition, it must be true.
    
    When I’m on LQ, Karori buses are far & away the most frequent. Though, perhaps Wilton’s a dangerous area – even the buses have to travel together in fives.

    I heard that fool Wood on. With Hosking this morning, he tried to suggest Nats did not maintain roads for 8 years, it is utter bullshit, I remember sections of motor ways on the way to work being resurfaced every two years, the same section has been done recently and has been done for the first time in 5 years, the voter know pit holes were never this bad, and I call bullshit too that rain caused pot holes, since bloody when?

      The two Woods (Michael and Megan) will leave a disastrous legacy for NZ and future governments. Michael has let the roading system fail (maintenance, lack of new roads and poor quality workmanship). It will take decades to catch up to where we should be now. You see this in post earthquake CHCH, the road / footpath maintenance schedule was stopped during rebuild and now things that should have been repaired and updated will sit another 10yrs.
      
      Megan has gone a step worse, she came in as minister of energy and pronounced a need to increase energy generation each year to keep up with demand. Instead she has sat on new generation, with growth in (erratic) wind easily offset by decommissioning (baseload) coal / gas. At the same time she has pushed policies that have / will cause a dramatic explosion in electricity usage. In the coming years we will face brown / black outs, rationing and explosive price increases while we wait the decades it will take to build generation. She has also managed to substantially weaken our gas generation and fuel supplies. Megan woods is the worst thing to ever happen to NZ.
      
      Oh and the feature that all growing / successful economies have is cheap stable energy supply.

        Dr Woods was the previous Minister of Science and Tech for 5 years – she couldnt even put together a statement of Labour policy for the 2020 Labour Election Manifesto.
        
        Shes also been actively involved in rolling out race based policy in the Universities PGSF Fund.

  I think you misunderstood what I was saying. The Land Transport Fund is down about $2 billion from the excise at RUC cuts. It was topped up from the COVID Fund. I said that in the absence of such a top up, transport projects would need to be cancelled. That statement is unquestionably correct. What you are saying is that some of those transport projects are “wasteful”, e.g. bus lanes. We can have that debate, but it is a separate one.
  
  Let’s say Grant Robertson had said to the Transport Minister “You are not getting a top up. Cut transport spending by $2 billion”. You think that they would cut what you are calling “wasteful spending”. Maybe. Or more likely they would have simply continued with their pet projects and cancelled roads and road maintenance.

    I guess it’s hard for a dumb county boy like me to understand how unused cycle lanes are transport projects. I tend to think in terms of moving people and freight efficiently.
    So for example, just to help me understand, a multimillion Waka Kotahi Admin building is a transport project, as it houses people employed to save the planet from climate change, I mean to plan transport? //

      As I said earlier in the thread, I bought a bike just for a bit of exercise and going to the local shops. The cycleways in Christchurch are fun to ride on, but I can’t see how they ever met a cost benefit test.
      
      I went for a 1 hour ride yesterday. During that time I saw 2 other cyclists.
      
      I am looking forward to the census data on transport modes. In the 2018 census, FEWER people were travelling to work and education by bike than in 1990. I would be surprised if the mode share has changed much. IIIRC in 2018, it was 2 percent. Let’s say it is now 3 percent. Big deal.

        I cycle to work every day (rain or shine) and CHCH is one of the best cities for bikes as it is mostly flat.
        
        Even if we double the # of cyclists (possible with the flurry of oldies on their new E bikes), there are still going to be piles of cars needing roads. Bikes might reduce the need for new roads but they do nothing to reduce the need for maintenance.

        A 1 hour ride on Sunday and you only only saw 2 other cyclists? Where on earth would that be?
        Where I live in North Shore, and anywhere within a 15 km radius, you would come across several dozen (and often a lot more) cyclists in a 1 hour ride. The Lake Rd cycle way is typically quite busy, though to be fair, there would be many more cars than cyclists.
        I use a lot of the cycle ways in Auckland and they are well used. Obviously they are not suitable for everyone. However if I am going 5 km or so and don’t need to carry much stuff, I use the bike instead of the car. I am quite happy to run a 3 litre diesel car, though I will look at electric for my next vehicle. They now have enough range. With a pretty decent charging network.

      In recent times, we were told the authorities were following The Science™ in their response to Covid-19. However, we now know that to be nonsense:
      
      We were locked down even though lockdowns don’t work.
      
      We were forced to wear masks even though they make little difference.
      
      Children were coerced into taking vaccines even though the JCVI failed to recommend them.
      
      People were banned from social media for suggesting the virus might have come from a Wuhan lab even though that is now accepted as the most likely source.
      
      We had to show vaccine passports to go to the pub or theatre even though the vaccines do little to stop transmission.
      
      The Government used fear to increase the perceived level of threat from Covid-19 to increase compliance with lockdowns, at the behest of SPI-B.

With the decline in the west of the Christian religion we are supposed to become more rational, more emperical, more guided by the science. In fact our society has become more crazy. For example here are six impossible things that the former Prime minister, NZ’s own Alice in Wonderland, asked us to believe –

-the vaccine is completely safe.
-locking down the whole population of NZ for a virus that is only really harmful to old people is a good idea.
-trans women are women
– supporting the aborting of the unborn child up until birth is a sign of a good moral person.
-we can have zero deaths on the road if we slow down to 80kms on the open road and 40kms or less in town
-if we cut our carbon emissions we can change the weather. Her successor suggests we won’t have cyclones if we cut our carbon emissions.

I’m sure others can add to the list? But there’s six impossible things the ruling class and the media to this day insist we must believe.

Meanwhile the good book says –
“Thinking themselves wise they became fools” (Romans 1:22)

Quite how giving members of the Mahuta family more power over NZ’s resources and activities than the Cassandra family is unclear. How it gets Maoris leaving school being able to read, write and count is also unclear. Why Cassandras with a Maori ancestor should have more say than the solely Scottish- descent side of the family is also unclear and seems wrong to all of us.   Whanau used to refer to extended family, but it now seems to also mean nuclear family. So, basically, lots of people.
  
  Probably mainly childcare centres actually, who can now raise their prices.
  
  I’d be interested to see what percentage of family income goes on childcare these days. I suspect a lot of families would be just as well off financially if Mum and Dad worked shorter days (say 5-6 hours), one in the morning and the other in the afternoon/evening while the non-working parent looked after the children.
  
  Then we could release all those childcare workers into other work, so solving our labour shortage.

  I always used to think Cruz was a pompous git, probably because of the medias selected sound bites and his accent. However I started listening to the ‘Verdict with Ted Cruz’ podcast. He is brilliant, fair and seemingly honest. Many right wing podcasters (incl the guy on with Cruz sometimes) often take things to far, exaggerate or mischaracterise to argue their points.   Strange, our dhb was doing fine, in the black financially. ED wait time wasn’t very long, specialist wait time wasn’t very long. Then labour got into government and screwed it all up. Thanks labour, best idea you ever had was sacking perfectly healthy staff because they didn’t get vaccinated. Then because you were financially and morally bankrupt you put up the points system making it harder for people to get treatment. Closed hospitals that had no Covid in them, or even in the district. Spent millions putting a dead language all over them. Changed health records to give everyone a pronoun. Meanwhile people are suffering and dying because of your constant screwing the health system. Personally I love going to the gp and listening to people being told by what used to be huge labour supporting receptionist how you have screwed things up so much.

    Slightly off topic, but when we lived in the UK, it was very difficult to get a short notice GP appointment. If one of the (then small) kids woke up with an ear infection or some such, we’d want to see a doctor sooner rather than later. But, without fail, the GP’s surgery would be filled with little old ladies going to see the nice young doctor – presumably because he was the only one who would listen to them wittering on, & service was free at the point of delivery.

      Had a relative whose hip collapsed last year waiting for a hip replacement. Left in a wheelchair in incredibly pain. His surgeon was working damn hard to get the operation and in the end bypassed the ministry of health refusing it and went ahead with it. Heard not long after they put the points up further. Our dhb used to push knee and hip replacements through the private hospital, not sure if they have started doing that again but they were stopped by the new set up of doing that.

      We are moving towards that now. Pre COVID I could get an appointment with our doctors on the same day. Now it takes about three days minimum.
      
      My Son, doing NCEA, was sick and would miss an exam. I contacted the school, they said I needed a medical certificate. Contacted the doctors, next slot 4 days away. Obviously he would be better by then. Went back to the school, no problem they said, just go see the doctor in 4 days with a well child (pay them) and get a back dated certificate !
      
      You couldn’t make this shit up. Seeing the doctor with a well child to take the slot of some other poor sick bugger.

      In NZ we have chosen option 2.
      
      I had a hernia some years ago, doc said to me ‘got health insurance?’ yes I said but isn’t this covered with public (not wanting to pay my excess). Sure is said the doctor. Its about a 2 yr waiting list, but your lucky as if you were over 60 you would never even get it.
      
      Used my health insurance and had the operation within the week!
      
      Sucks that you need to pay twice, once for public services you may never use and once for private.

  My son is a house surgeon in a North Island provincial city. He was on call last weekend. There was a surgical patient on a bed in a corridor outside the ED on Saturday afternoon waiting to be admitted. On Monday the patient was still in the corridor. So there no beds and folks are parked up wherever. It’s not yet Winter folks so how do you Kiwibloggers think we’re going to go this year? These health reforms have been a total disaster and most kiwis have no idea what a mess things are. And Labour have had 6 years of being in charge of things so can’t weasel out and blame National. The targets were working well and the first thing Labour do is abolish them. Of course the MSM will never report this because they don’t want to rain on Chippies parade. Why can’t we add a couple more years to the beginning of primary school? Same site, same admin, specialist teachers, extra rooms and play areas. Leave the private sector to take care of the infants and toddlers but free state ECE would be available from, say, the age of 3.

  Our 6 year old ‘graduated’ from ECE to year 1 right next door, part of the same school complex. Worked well, easy managed transition. Not a state school though. Not cheap either. But no reason it couldn’t work just as well in the state system. Could start by bringing in kindergartens, almost completely state funded anyway.

  I can’t help thinking that we would have a stronger society if the people who had children were their main care giver and saw that as their most important vocation. As opposed to subscribing to handing this responsibility to the care of a low waged workforce.
  
  The family unit is the building block of society. Government settings and policy that weaken the family unit are to our detriment. Subsidising childcare weakens the family unit. I would rather see income sharing for the first 100k of household income for parents. That would substantially lower tax and encourage more households to have a stay at home parent.
  
  I’d also rather find ways to empower folks to provide their own kids lunches than providing them at school. Hand ups not hand outs.
  
  Bit old fashioned maybe, but I truely believe most children would grow up in better emotional, spiritual and physical health if we had more family first policies.

National standards didn’t work because they were so watered down by the unions and bureaucrats they were virtually meaningless. Just as secondary schools have their results made public so too primary schools should have to publish their testing.
Unions will screech ‘league tables’ but we already have nationally normed tests to evaluate progress and we, the funders, should be able to see what the schools are achieving with the massive resourcing they get.
Public accountability always achieves better results. Just as an adjustment to funding based on actual rolls at, say mid-year, would rapidly improve attendance. There’s no incentive when high schools get their whole years funding based on their 1 March roll. Why then go hunting for the lazy, delinquent and unwilling?

The man calling Ruth Card sounded just like her grandson Brandon. So when he said he was in jail, with no wallet or cellphone, and needed cash for bail, Card scrambled to do whatever she could to help.

Killed because of a minor traffic accident.

Joshuah Tasi was a talented musician and a brother who loved and looked after his siblings, says a high school friend.

Tasi, 28, died after an altercation with two teenagers on Beach Haven Rd on Friday night and community leaders say his violent death has left residents in a state of shock.

Luke Liederman told the Herald that he met Tasi in their last year of school at Northcote College and that they bonded over music.

        I believe it is almost impossible for someone incarcerated for life to commit additional crimes outside of prison. The walls and guards have a strong deterrent effect.
        You can note how effective this is by the fact regressive politicians also opt for walls and guards around their persons even while they encourage crime in society at large.

  Some Māori would be extremely close to “Full Māori” in the DNA sense. I guess 15/16 or 31/32 would not be that unusual. There certainly would be many tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, who would be 3/4 or 7/8.
  At that level people will essentially identify as wholly Māori, with the 1/4 or 1/8 being mostly of curiosity value.
  It is different once the Pakeha portion is 3/8 or 1/2. Then the person will be directly involved in their Pakeha side. They will probably still identify as Māori, but will recognise their broader family in a close way.

Has anybody seen any actual data that confirms that NZ is experiencing an increasing frequency of extreme weather events, like we’re continually getting told by our govt and MSM and school children?

Just for fun I have downloaded a pile of weather data for Auckland covering the last 20 years to see how much things have changed over that short period of time. In short, it hasn’t.
The most ‘extreme’ change that my inexpert eye can see is a slight increase in the lowest of minimum temperatures during winter.
Maximum temps (and the number of hot days) dont seem to have increased at all.
Rainfall doesn’t seem to have changed at all. Pressures don’t seem to have changed much – maybe a slight reduction in the number of really low pressure readings.

I find it interesting that people are so confident the weather has changed, when really all that’s happened is we’re getting fewer frosts.

Would it kill MSM to actually provide an actual chart showing this increase in extreme weather?

  “Fewer frosts”. Which is exactly what you would expect as the climate warms. Coupled with more extreme weather events.
  I know most commenters here are climate change skeptics (to put it politely). But the changes over the last 2o years are pretty much in line with what climate scientists have predicted.
  The one area of dispute I have is the rate of sea level change. It has been minimal, perhaps 1 to 2 cm. I actually live right beside the sea, with a sea wall at the bottom of the garden. I could not pick a 1 cm sea level change. It would need to be more than 5cm before it would be obvious.

    20 years is a tiny tiny blip in the overall climate timeline. Our (sparse and patchy, on a global level) thermometer records only go back about 200 years.
    
    You realise that since the last ice age proxy records (ice cores, lake bed sediments, ancient tree lines etc etc) show there were warmer periods than the current period? As in warmer periods than now but no significant human caused Co2.

Byer was a Labour MP for Wairarapa and served as mayor of Carterton.

She was a vocal activist for LGBTQI rights.

A 16-year-old has pleaded guilty to manslaughter this morning.

He killed Ōkaihau man Michael Biggins in September 2021 – at age 15.

The teen was originally jointly charged with murder, with another boy who was 12 at the time.

The younger boy pleaded not guilty to murder and will go on trial on Wednesday – he is one of the youngest people ever to face that charge in Aotearoa.

The old Waikeria Prison was wrecked by rioting inmates about three years ago.
This prison was due for demolition to be replaced by a 500 bed prison plus 100 bed mental unit.
Construction started in 2018 & it’s supposed to handed over later this year.
Apparently the cost is $750mil
A lot of people are hollering out for much longer prison sentences.
That would require a lot of new prisons at, one would have thought, great expense.
Meanwhile
New hospitals I would see as a much higher priority.
It’s a pity they can’t go up as fast as prisons.

    Unlikely to be more than $75o million. That figure is already a doubling of the original costs. Yes, ultra expensive.
    All public projects are now built to vastly higher standards than a generation ago. Often quite unnecessarily so.
    Look at modern motorways. Done to a standard that is simply unwarranted. In the past motorways were simply 4 lane roads with a modest level of landscaping. Nowadays a huge amount of landscaping, special wetlands, sculptures, highly decorated concrete form work. The extra cost must be hundreds of millions.

  if they are to be released they should be released back to their own communities – if no one wants them then they should go and live next door to MCos and Mike

As journalists, sometimes we need to push for answers to questions people want to dodge. So when PM Chris Hipkins refused to reveal his favourite pie shop on Monday, an in-depth hunt seemed the only answer.
