What are the odds that Minister Verrall will retire from politics this years and return to real Research Medicine for which she has a top reputation.
She would be better there in the very best interest of New Zealand to have people of her calibre trying to take real Medicine forward than be continually dropped upon by Wellington so called Health bureaucrats, and the fiasco which is now the crap politically inspired medical practices thrust upon us.

  I suppose you’ve got to feel for those Labour MPs who have tasted Ministerial power since 2020, and especially those since the recent Hipkins reshuffle, who if they get booted out in Oct face the prospect of 6,9,12 years in opposition before they get another opportunity to wreak their special havoc on New Zealanders again.

    Swifty, on the basis of the worst-ever NZ government which salaciously, and without any sort mandate, performed so many egregious deeds to wreck the economy – ceasing oil prospecting, closing Marsden Point, closing coal mines, closing charter schools, squandering expenditure everywhere, inflicting the nonsense of naming everything in Maori and confusing 99% of the population – I’d guess that Labour’s chances of re-election within 50 years were zilch. Mind you, with a turkey like Luxon “leading” National – all bets have to be off.

  Minister Verrall is not having a fun time after taking the hospital pass. Maybe she is looking towards October 2023 and weighing up her options – 3 more years as a weak link Minister, easy ride in Opposition with just ‘9 months of neglect’, stand down and step back into the other career.

    The foundations for a rapid decline in Health were set when Clark was appointed in 2017, then I think Chippy held the fort for a while. No good was ever going to come from Little being Health Minister so maybe Verrall is not that popular with the Labour powers that be.

  People know when politicians turn up at events just to be seen and are sick of this type of calculated “virtue signalling” – similar to Mr Hipkins on Te News last evening visiting an A&P show. Of course he was wearing a checked shirt like de all farmers wear, eh. And had a ride in a big, emissions emitting tractor which next week he will be condemning as contributing to climate change emergency.
  Mr Luxon should decide what type of leader he is and stick to it, rather than trying to please all and ending up pleasing none.

        To be clear farmers we’re coerced in HWEN with the threat of the ETS if no agreement acceptable to the government was reached. There’s a lot of farmers very angry about where HWEN ended up and the number of farms projected to go under if HWEN goes ahead.

        I dunno if that is necessarily true. Last election a lot of farmers wbo were previously in the Clutha Southland electorate found themselves in the new (reinstated) Taeri electorate along with urban residents of Mosgiel & South Dunedin who would mainly be dyed in the wool Labour voters. National simply didn’t have the rural votes to win that seat. 26k votes to Labour vs 9k votes to National.

    Not so long ago it culled the national book collection of thousands – tens of thousands – of books, alleging this was to make room.
    
    One reason given was to focus on new Pacific and New Zealand titles, which, will of course, overwhelming will be Woke, and often ethnonationalist, too.
    
    Now the National Library’s useful site, Papers Past, with online access to a century of digitised records of NZ newspapers, is getting the treatment. NZ has had Maori publications, but overwhelmingly the newspapers have been in English language.

It is the high delivered cost of natural gas and coal that makes it impossible for companies to actually extract the amounts of coal and natural gas that seem to be available based on reserve estimates.”

So with this in mind, What do we do ? Import Low value coal ( And Ashfelt ), And deliver Fuel via Product Tanker ( Av Gas, Diesel, Petroleum etc) at a very high ( And unreliable) Charter Rate.

    There are plenty of business professionals in the energy industry, whose livelihoods depend on ensuring that their employers are able to meet their customers’ requirements. They therefore spend their working days examining and analysing trends and events likely to affect energy demand and supply in the short, medium and long term, and they carefully consider how to anticipate and be prepared to respond to those pressures. What are politicians supposed to be able to add to that?
    
    We were rightly suspicious and cynical of calls for a “national food strategy”. Why would we think that a “national energy strategy” would be any different?

      We need to be able to best of our ability guarantee fuel supplies, storage, and distribution of all kinds. Currently, we can’t!
      We have no guarantee of supply if commercial vendors choose to ignore NZ due to costs and/or hostilities or threats thereof make the risks involved in supply too great.
      We currently have approximately thirty days of stock in storage and due to the constraints involved with supply above, that’s not a lot of fuel, even with rationing.
      As for distribution, I would have thought the constraints on distribution were highlighted by our infrastructure inadequacies over the last month.

      Formulate and implement coherent national energy policy. That’s their job. Comparisons with “national food strategy” miss the point. Farming can be successfully conducted by individual enterprises, while virtually all major energy projects have to be underwritten by the Government or by energy companies, such as oil majors and so on, in cooperation with the Government. The energy companies will avoid this country like a plague, if all that it takes to destroy the stability required in the energy sector are infantile “captain’s calls”. As for the former; for example, all major hydro dams were built by the State, as only the State can, in NZ, provide sufficient resources for the undertakings of such magnitude. This tweet, from a friend whose property suffered massive damage during the recent cyclone, makes me both sad and angry:

Not quite a month on….3 weeks of larger digger work. This is the front block of one orchard. It was in the direct path of a stopbank breach. Some people at the council want us to separate out our posts, wires and irrigation.

Watch the video that goes with the tweet, and take in the carnage. Then ask why the local council insists on getting in the way of people trying to clean up the mess that arrived uninvited into their homes, farms and orchards when stopbanks were breached. Surely these people could just be allowed to get rid of all the silt, slash and other debris from their properties, without having to sift through everything and put it in neat piles to please some anonymous pen-pusher, who hasn’t lost their livelihood.

It simply reinforces the old line about one of the Three Great Lies being “I’m from the council, and I’m here to help”!

  So what did I do? In the comments section I ranted about the need to call Maori out. If they are going to call Maori out, why not Pacific Islanders, or better yet, why not immigrants and refugees? And on the Statistics NZ Business Survey I did the same. On Friday I received a phone call from Stats NZ asking why I had completed the survey in that manner. I reiterated my views. In last years local body elections, the same (photo on file if requested). So come onyou brave Kiwiblog commenters, strand up and start doing the same.

  I saw the ad last night and was initially offended (in the modern, woke sense) then employed my thinkolator and decided that it was designed to speak directly to a sector of the population that is generally disengaged so therefore had merit. So, maybe sensible use of advertising budget? Is the ad budget also going on social media posts with a similar message, targeted at disaffected population sectors? I hope so.

      Couple of things in the text on that page made me cringe
      
      “The same definition has been applied to both data sources, however caution should be used when comparing different published data sources”
      
      “DHB non-financial monitoring framework no longer exists, and DHBs/districts are no longer required to complete a SS10 template as part of this quarterly process.
      
      For data from the 1 July 2022 period, we have applied the same definition as stated in the SS10 guidance to the ED data in National Collections. This is a different data source, therefore SSED results from National Collections are not directly comparable to the SSED results received via the SS10 templates.”
      
      So the central system doesn’t necessarily produce the same results that the DHBs produced themselves.
      
      Could just be timeliness, fixes to data in the national system means it no longer matches snapshots produced earlier. But that is probably optimistic.

Talking with one of the girls at Mass earlier. She was telling me her daughter is a first-year Law Student at Vic.
Apparently, the first few weeks have been solely dedicated to learning ‘Maori-Case-Law’ which she told her mum is sooo f….ing boring!
They’re all really looking forward to actually moving on to studying the ‘Westminster System’ in the months ahead.

    It’s the excuse Lawyers and Judges use to lessen the sentence that would otherwise be handed down to Non-Maori based on what a prior Lawyer has argued or a Judge handed down.
    IMO, Home Detention (with visiting rights) is pretty much the maximum penalty hand-down for Maori offenders these days.

  A brief answer to your question.
  
  Kaiarahi: gearbox failure, resulting in prolonged lay-up due to the parts not being available ex stock and having to be manufactured
  Kaitaki: central cooling system for Main Engines – failure of flexible joint, resulting in the total loss of power. Current problem unknown.
  Aratere: operational
  Valentine: operational, cargo only
  Connemara: Main Engine turbocharger failure, resulting in reduced power in one engine, Usually, when this happens, the engine is only used to “get home”
  Straitsman: operational, no recent problems, recently sold to Condor Ferries, due to leave NZ at the end of April
  Strait Feronia: currently dry-docking in Sydney
  
  All these vessels are fairly old and all except of Aratere were purchased as second (or third) hand. Aratere was built for the Interislander in the yard that previously built only naval vessels and had no experience in passenger vessels’ construction. She was ordered following industrial strife at Tranz Rail in 1994 and was intended as a walk-on walk-off crewed vessel with corresponding specifications. The poor quality of design and build was evident in numerous failures right through the entire history of this pride of Kiwi Rail fleet.
  
  As for the remaining vessels…
  
  A single point failure (cooling system), which recently resulted in Kaitaki’s may-day call has no place on a passenger vessel. She was built in 1995 and has been operated by Kiwi Rail since 2007. It doesn’t say much about the standards of the entity operating her that this deficiency has not been picked up and rectified long time ago.
  Her age notwithstanding, Kaiarahi’s breakdown (gearbox) could have happened on any ship of any age. I had a similar incident on a very well maintained 9 years old vessel. In our case the repairs were completed in 2 weeks, but the parts required were readily available, otherwise there would have been 6 months lead time to manufacture the replacement bearings.
  The turbocharger failure on Connemara is not a very common fault these days, but again it can happen, especially on a ship that has just been purchased from the previous owner. Pre-purchase inspections, regardless how thorough will not necessarily identify if there are any underlying issues.
  
  What needs to be remembered is that all these vessels are running 24/7 on a very tight schedule in one of the most unforgiving stretches of ocean in the world. While all of them have regular maintenance periods (1 day every 2 weeks or so, I believe) there’s only so much that can be done in such time and many jobs have to be deferred. Parts for the old vessels can be very difficult to obtain and often involve long lead time before they get to NZ. Not having worked for either Kiwi Rail or Bluebridge I can’t comment on the specific management practices in these companies, but it has to be remembered that both companies exist not just to provide a service (no matter how essential), but also to make a profit for their owners, otherwise they would not exist.

    Limped into Sydney for a few days then across the Tasman on reduced power, no turbos at all so an 18kt ship reduced to 11-12 kts.
    
    Then in Akl and new Turbo flown out from Germany. Engines were a popular marque so parts available ” off the shelf”.
    
    Aratere was only part built when purchased and then she was retro fitted with rails. She was a didaster and known as the Aralemon. However, since she was lengthened, she seems to have been OK.
    
    Ferries should be bought new, run in with the older ones still available as there might be teething problems, then sold after a year-18 months.
    
    They should be replaced every 20 years. The thought of having 2 new vessels leaves me with dread. One breaksdown and there is one ferry only, they should have three.
    
    Also, the safety provisions either side of the Strait are minimal. No tugs that could handle the new ferries if they break down as the present ones do not have the grunt.

      Grunt is not a problem. Both, Tapuhi and Tiaki have plenty of power (5200 BHP each), which is more than enough to tow any of the Cook Strait ferries. The thing is, being harbour tugs, they can’t handle the weather and can’t tow over the stern. Both have winches up fwd and their drums are too small for a tow length that would be required anyway. And there’s bugger all on the other side. Ancient Monowai and another old tug ex. Tauranga; I don’t think they are even in survey for outside of restricted limits.
      
      As for Aratere, if I remeber right, she lost the propeller a couple of years after lengthening.

  Cook strait is only 22km across at narrowest pt vs 93km length of current sailing route. With a substantial spend on breakwaters and roads to new ferry facilities located either side of that narrow gap it would reduce crossing times to about 15-60minutes depending on ferry type, which would increase ferry productivity and reduce costs over long term. It would also make it economic to use unconventional smaller ferries that can handle rough seas (SWATH) to increase sailing frequency.

    This is tip of the iceberg though. The amount of money being poured into Maori must be incredible. Government keeps it all pretty secrety though, you hear about the odd opening ceremony, welcomings, farewells, prayers and so on. All money for jam.
    
    I know a sports organisation from a maori area being given approx 40k to buy equipment. We applied to lotto to buy half the equipment for 20k, lotto said they are prioritising giving to Maori because they were affected so much by covid. So, we are now forced to rent the gear from the maoris.

Green left fake newser Jack Tame hammered PM Chris Hipkins for a full ten minutes on how extending the fuel tax rebate would lead to an increase in bad weather.

Hipkins defended the decision on the basis that people couldn’t do without fuel & he wanted to help them.

Hipkins is outflanking Luxon on environmental issues & now the Nats are at risk of being portrayed as more like the dogma driven Greens than Labour, and driving up living costs because of their similar addiction to this dogma.

Hipkins can also do sincerity far better then Luxon, who comes across (IMHO) all the time as if he is faking it. This is a big part of why the polls are not improving for Luxon.

  Maybe I’ve just been lucky, but one person I have _not_ seen pushing the climate change nonsense hard is Hipkins.
  According to one commenter on this blog, most people in the country ‘believe’ in this nonsense, and believes Luxon/National would lose votes if they didn’t push along with net zero destruction. It’s what most of us want, apparently.
  From what I’ve seen, Hipkins seems more rational than Luxon in this regard. Has he been getting different advice than Luxon?
  (Don’t panic, I won’t be voting for either of those parties).

    I agree with that. Be it the truth or not, it is the perception that is developing, and IMHO its the worst possible thing that could happen.
    
    I warned way back of the fact that Hipkin’s projected guileless personality combined with the outrageous left/Labour bias of the media will be a difficult problem for the Nats to solve. They still don’t seem to get it.
    
    They also need to stop saying they will bring about “outcomes”. Maybe they will, but they seem bereft of any idea as to how they will do that. Raising the obvious question “why will they do any better than Labour?”
    
    Once again, its a situation they should not have got themselves into. They should have been explaining how they would achieve these improved outcomes long ago.
    
    The National strategy dept must take responsibility for this. They seem clueless and unable to read the political room, and its a problem that will lose them the election if not rectified.

  Yes, Tame was grossly excessive in that line of questioning. One or two questions would have OK, but 10 minutes was absurd. It destroyed the value of the interview. I actually gave up watching, it was such a waste of time that I suddenly had other things to do.
  I thought Hipkins might have told Tame that enough was enough, that he had already answered the question three times. And that was in the first five minutes! Keeping his cool after such ridiculous questioning probably enhanced his reputation.
  Not one of Tame’s better interviews, who I generally rate. It was a pity he did such a poor interview with the PM. Most viewers would have have expected a better and more wide ranging interview.

Was out with a friend yesterday and I expressed surprise when I saw a person on his own in the middle of a park miles away from anyone else and wearing a face mask.
My friend told me “we have to wear face masks”, but I told her we don’t (and after all neither of us was wearing a mask), then I recalled that maybe we still are supposed to at the doctors’, hospitals etc. So out of interest just went to the Covid19 website to check and it includes…I kid you not…. “You must wear a face mask when visiting….dentists and oral health services”.
