    Her former boss, Jaspinda, was also often heard explaining matters using phrases like “this is a complex matter to explain”.

      She believes wrapping these little scrotes in cotton wool and all-around love will prevent them drifting further into crime.
      I wish someone from Te MSM would have the guts to ask her what she achieved while working for the Police that was noteworthy.
      She struck me as being one of those bimbos that were always a candidate for long lunches and Friday night pissups.
      I wrote on KB the other day that she was nothing but Window Dressing for Hipkins when he was on TV and Nanaia Mahuta was unavailable. Well, blow me down, Mahuta’s in China and sure enough, there was Ginny on TV (the Govt Propaganda Channel) yesterday or Monday with Hipkins and she was acting like a ‘Noddy Dog’ at his shoulder.

        I same her last night discussing the statistics on youth offending. Her comments confirm your view she is very woke, and believes “wrap around services” are the way forward. That level of approach explains why only 40 youth offenders were prosecuted last year versus over 5,000 in 2008 (the highpoint). Since then, it has all been downhill.

  It’s my humble opinion that the Greens do not answer to the NZ voters, but to Greenpeace HQ in Amsterdam.
  
  Their policies appear designed to make NZ poorer and create a serf class, forever beholden to the state in perpetual poverty (as well as energy poverty)
  
  This ignores the simple truth that wealthy countries can afford better environmental policies.
  
  And as for climate change it’s time to move beyond the smoke and mirrors of so called mitigation policies based on Voodoo Carbon accounting and concentrate on making us more resilient and better able to adapt to the coming Ice Age.

    When you stand back and look at the whole situation it is one hell of a mess, basically created by one person.
    It is just a pity that more voters did not see that repugnant “comrade” speech back in 2009. I did, and I knew then if she ever gained power there would be trouble.
    What to do now? I don’t know. There are now so many who have fallen love with socialism/communism – and they have a beef with rich pricks who have a few assets.
    
    Any lefties will find it hard to understand that we WORKED for those assets. They can’t grasp that the welfare they depend on comes from our Net Tax.

      I’m no Ardern fan, but I suggest it’s unfair to lay the blame for the totality of the mess at her feet. She was a symptom of a deeper problem, that being the ascendancy of a single ruling class that has organised itself into teams to give the increasingly vacuous, disengaged but dependent hoi polloi triennial comfort that democracy is still working. And it’s not working for any group other than the ruling class and its sycophants.

        The issue @Steve and @KK is that politics as we know it today no longer serves the function it did 100 years ago when politicians were working in a green field world, when there were many issues that need to be addressed that would materially benefit the people in the country. Todays politicians are working in a brown field world. Most of the “significant” legislation has be written and enacted. The issues facing the population are far more complicated than those facing our predecessors and the political systems we have inherited from the past are no longer relevant. The people have disengaged and only people with extremist views participate actively. Parliaments tinker endlessly with banal changes to laws and acts, some do it well some do it badly but for the politicians involved their lives continue blissfully. They maintain the ancient working practices, the odd hours and three day week of their predecessors and are largely immune from the disasters they are responsible for. There must be a better system..

        It’s all about the incentives – as with every human system. Politicians are rewarded for the noises they make -swaying moronic voters- rather than the measurable improvements they achieve.
        
        This could be circumvented by paying all MPs huge bonuses based on improvements in countries performance over decade following their time in office. Increased life spans, wealth, health, education, freedoms, better infrastructure, higher GDP, less debt, more exports etc all resulting in higher bonuses, backwards shifts on any metric seeing bonuses reduced.
        
        This would also incentivize all MPs to help improve the country as much as possible, rather than just sniping at competitors.
        
        Could be done by private enterprise collecting donations and distributing them. A few 10’s of millions a year distributed ( a few dollars per kiwi) would be very cheap at the price.

        Greens have an Annual Conference resolution on the books that they will not work with National. That is why James Shaw did not dare to have a chat with Bill English after the 2017 election. And because of that policy, Winston had the Greens round his little finger. Indeed he did not even need to talk with the Greens but instead got Labour to talk to the Greens (within Winston’s parameters of course).

I think Ginny Anderson is going to make Poto Williams look like a star performer as the Police Minister. Ginny’s interview with Mike Hosking is comedy gold if it was not for the fact that Crime is front of thought for so many NZers. I think this appointment really highlights that the talent pool in Labour is as shallow as a puddle in summer.

I live in a central Auckland suburb. Day and night you hear the black police eagle helicopter flying above. It’s like noise pollution in your living room.

You know it is chasing these degenerates doing the ram raiding of innocent retail businesses. The frequency of that helicopter tells you that the problem is out of control. This week alone that helicopter has been heard flying twice around 1am-3am.

What this tells me also is that the paid for nz media have stopped reporting the daily ram raid incidences and attacks. There is literally no commentary in the media on this crisis. As though it’s all ok.

What is Hipkins doing about youth crime at the moment? He’s announced policy U turns on everything but that. He needs to reverse some of Ardern’s soft on crime policies. These people don’t need more benefit money (or their parents). They need to be locked up and shown real consequences for their actions.

It’s like living in a war zone having that helicopter flying above Auckland constantly and you just have to drive around Auckland to see the many boarded up shops that have been hit to know the problem is out of control.

Is this something to do with the large Labour maori caucus number and appeasing them by not having a three strikes type policy to deal with this? As Seymour said it’s basically a South Africa type lawlessness situation out there since Labour have been in power.

National will rewrite the curriculum to set kids up for success

A National Government will rewrite the New Zealand Curriculum to ensure every child has the basic skills they need in reading, writing, maths and science to set them up for further education and for life, National Leader Christopher Luxon says.

Mr Luxon will announce Teaching the Basics Brilliantly, the first part of National’s education policy in the Hutt Valley on Thursday.

“Education is critical for unlocking a better future for all New Zealanders and equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed,” Mr Luxon says.

“A world-class education system is essential for driving social mobility, helping break cycles of poverty, and giving every child the chance to live the life they want.

“We cannot have world-class incomes and living standards without a world-class education system.

“But the current state of education in New Zealand is alarming. Achievement has been in decline for the last 30 years and a recent NCEA pilot exposed just how far achievement has fallen, with a staggering two-thirds of students unable to meet the minimum standard in reading, writing and maths.

“National will not allow this to continue. National will make sure every child leaving primary and intermediate school can master the basics so they can succeed at high school and lead fulfilling lives.

“Today I am announcing National will rewrite the New Zealand Curriculum to detail the non-negotiable knowledge and skills that primary and intermediate schools must cover each year in reading, writing, maths, and science.

There’s more, and I’m sure the full statement will be around later in the day. But this seems to me to definitely be a step in the right direction to getting education back on track, and the tagline Teaching the Basics Brilliantly should really resonate with Kiwi parents.

        But as the old saying goes. One swallow does not a summer make.
        
        National will win the election as more sensible detailed policy is rolled out.
        
        BUT we all need to help National and Act win 75% of seats so they can entrench a few laws including the results of Act”s TOW referendum.
        
        Whilst identifying problems is important, donating and volunteering is the real solution.
        
        And voting for minor parties only helps Labour. Just think back as to how the underqualified Adern became prime Minister in 2017.

  I agree with this, but the stumbling block will be the PC led hordes currently residing in schools, universities and teaching training establishments who have the maorification programme well and truly entrenched. The school day is only so long and it is increasingly filled with mumbo jumbo such as maori science (an oxymoron if I ever heard one) and rewriting history. Allied to this good policy must be recognition of quality teachers and the purging of the PC zealots determined to bugger up our kid’s education.

    The “new” history curriculum is so bad it can just be ditched, without immediate replacement. The Maori science can go too – rename the subject “natural science” to reinforce that it examines and seeks to explain natural phenomena without reference to the supernatural.
    If your core consists of language, mathematics and science there is plenty of time left in the school day for schools to offer a curriculum that suits their local community.
    Then all you need is a system that lets parents/students list their school choice preferences and randomly allocates these. It seems to be done elsewhere.
    Schools which fail to attract sufficient students will downsize or go out of existence. Those who attract more students will take over the vacated space. You can have two (or more) schools on one site, just like office buildings house more than one business.

  Although those under age 50 probably don’t know it, back in the day we had some brilliant politicians and captains of industry who only had education to “standard six” or form two as it was when I were a lad (can’t remember what year it is now – 8 I think) I’m thinking Norm Kirk, Keith Holyoake, Wilson Whineray, James Fletcher plus any number of others.
  
  If you come out of school able to read and write and do ‘rithmetic – which sadly many kids now leaving high school can’t, you can probably manage many jobs, including some of the less taxing trades. If you can’t manage “the three “r’s” you are pretty well limited to entry level or manual jobs.

      I remember seeing a Clint Eastwood film where he stopped by a car with a flat tyre…a woman was standing beside it, the male partner was some distance away, waving his cellphone in the air trying to get reception, so he could find out how to change a tyre. Very sad commentary on the young.
      
      I am very happy that both my kids emerged from the education system able to read well, but neither – sadly – read for pleasure. I remember telling them when they were very young “if you can read well and have access to books, you never need to be bored.”

      When I started work more than fifty years ago engineers only had the use of slide rules, a calculator & log books to help with calculations. Draughtsman used drawings boards. Didn’t even need electricity.
      School kids knew how to use that stuff.
      Engineering students could concentrate on learning engineering.

        Engineering students now learn a piece of software (Solidworks) combined with YouTube and Google. Theres a 20% turnout at lectures so theres no retained knowledge. Write a report forget it – you get an 8G video or a TicTok. After 2 years they become disinterested -they either want to be managers with all the baubles or go rock climbing to find themselves.

      An educationist with an interest in history told me that in many respects this was the equivalent in difficulty of the old fifth form School Certificate, replaced now by NCEA, for which you can do a unit in bar tending.

      Ehlana: I was one of those kids – left school after sixth form with a burning desire to work on offshore drilling rigs. I achieved that aim a year or so later. By age 28 I was more than ready to start using my brain rather than by back, and went back to uni (the first attempt straight out of school was just six months of sex and drugs before dropping out)
      
      Because I could read well, I managed to get both a BA and a law degree with honours. Reading+time+interest was the not so secret formula.

    As I have posted before I first starting employing people in 1973 when I was 21 yo. Over the decades the standard of education of the people I was employing decreased. Reading and writing was appalling. These were people in managerial roles expected to be able to write reports that could be understood.
    As I have said before I very much doubt most teachers could pass the School Certificate and University Entrance exams from the 1970s.
    Forget Te Reo and the rest of the rubbish get back to basics and make sure every student leaves school able to read and write.
    Want an example of the problem. How many in prison except the white collar crims cant read and write.

    When Kiwi Keith was awarded an honorary degree, a cheeky student newspaper wrote a satire piece where the Education Minister awarded Keith an honorary School Certificate on the basis that this should have preceded an honorary degree.
    In reality opportunities for and attitudes concerning further education meant that many teens had little option to leave school at 15 or soon after. Under different circumstances Keith and the others mentioned could well have gone to university if the parents were supportive and had some wealth.

  Few people comprehend how far we have sunk. Even if we can lift achievement in the “basics” we are still going to be left behind as other countries surge ahead. Learning to read and do maths is better than nothing but it is not enough in a modern society.
  
  I think we could look around other countries and simply replicate what the best are doing. Finland is one. It is consistently in the top 5 countries for education achievement. This is an outline of their curriculum for ‘basic education’ (ages 9 – 15). It contains a hell of a lot more than maths and literacy.

      If you look at the Finnish curriculum, kids have been taught a second language (for obvious reasons – you can’t really get through life just speaking Finnish).
      
      However there is also physics, chemistry, biology, ethics, history. They also teach about how to take care of yourself. ‘Entrepreneurship’ is a core subject.
      
      Browse through the linked pages. I’m just saying it looks a hell of a lot more sensible than what children are being taught here.

  If you want to change direction in education you have to change the power balance at the top and at the bottom first.
  
  At the top are the bureaucrats and unions that want status quo made worse. At the bottom are disruptive and unruly kids from worse than useless families who are empowered to disrupt all the other kids’ education. The unions are currently campaigning to make this even worse by abolishing streaming.
  
  To make any change National has to move power and responsibility to the schools themselves bypassing the Ministry and free parents to send their kids to the best schools with funding following them.
  
  It also has to end tolerance of disruptive and bad behaviour if necessary creating special schools to deal with those messed up kids and families.
  
  Anything else is just pie in the sky.

  But I will vote for whoever tries to get rid of the disgraceful state of affiars that New Zealand now is in.
  It will take many years – generations at least, to try and recover the pride we once had in our Country.
  I am not sure that it is possible as we have gone well over into a, once proud, South Pacific oblivion country

  There should be a very high barrier for refusing entry to someone simply based on their views. We even let rap singers in who sing about raping and murdering women. It is ‘artistic expression’.
  
  Kellie Jay Keen is not “transphobic”. She is happy for adults to knock themselves out cutting bits off and taking all the hormones they want. But she does not want children having bits cut off. And she does not want a penis in her face in the locker room at the gym.
  
  The reason women have their own ‘spaces’ is because some men are perverts and predators. It is impossible to know who they are. They don’t come with a warning stamp on their foreheads. So for centuries men have not been allowed in women’s spaces. This applies in all cultures. It is a practice that has stood the test of time.
  
  Then suddenly – essentially only in the last couple of years – in the Anglophile countries there are activists trying to turn centuries of practice upside down. Then when women like Kellie-Jay push back they are the subject of gaslighting and they get called Nazis.

News is breaking that Donald Trump will turn himself in to New York authorities Tuesday, where he expects to be arrested. Huh? Where did this come from? Arrested for what exactly? Why now? And why in New York? What is the proudest and least humble man in America 2.0 doing humbling himself like this?

Several questions arise here. Why is Trump traveling from Florida to New York, for the purpose of being arrested? In these cases, usually witnesses are extradited to other states. And governors can always refuse to extradite, as happened consistently during Jim Garrison’s investigation. So wouldn’t Ron DeSantis, as a loyal Republican, deny any laughable extradition order for Trump? Or would DeSantis be happy to get rid of his obnoxious rival for the presidential nomination, especially given Trump’s curious attacks on his character? So many potential plot twists.

There are many calls to adapt to the climate of the future.
I say we need to adapt to the current climate. That is the one where it rains at various rates from time to time, gets hot and gets cold.
We need to build roads and other infrastructure to deal with today’s reality. The soil on the Muriwai escarpment will still be the same in the future, no matter the weather, so no good blaming future weather for today’s problems.

Similarly in Hawke’s Bay near Hastings which destroyed apple plantations. The flooding was not cause directly by the rain; it was caused by the failure of one stop bank. Again, we failed to adapt and build to cope with the current climate.

    The River network system uses stop banks to control the impacts of flooding, especially on our towns and cities.
    Stop bank heights have been increased many times and the Tutaekuri river course changed several times.
    If one house can have a value of several million dollars what cost is too expensive.
    How much extra expense would Hawke’s Bay residents consider reasonable today and what would the figure have been a year ago.

    Areas vulnerable to land movement or flooding should be prepared for extreme events or not built on.
    Policy should take into account historical weather events more than 50 years ago, and be stress tested for events 50% or 100% worse.
    What I have seen north of Auckland is that serious slip damage is often confined to areas of less than 500 Ha where concentrated rainfall sits for an extended period. It’s this sort of regular event planners need to be preparing for rather than the rain guage at the airport.

Did anyone spot the irony of opening a large (6200m2) vegetable growing operation in Hamilton called Greengrowers?
It saves the usual planet by using less land to grow kitchen crops and is apparently necessary in the future due to climate change caused by dangerous CO2.
It is a great idea and I wish them well. However, its key to increasing green yields is to pump in higher levels of CO2. As we know, CO2 is plant food and plants love it. Higher levels of CO2 reduce the need for water so a win/win. Presumable it is heated as well above the ambient Waikato winter temperatures.

In other words, the green solution to increased crop yields is to create the exact environmental conditions that apparently will cause all life on Earth to wither and die!

As bank problems in America and Europe continue, we find some Kiwisaver money is at stake.

Fisher Funds, the second biggest Kiwisaver fund, had $50 million in America’s troubled Signature Bank, reports the Herald, which quotes a Fisher Funds spokesman as saying the investment is now worth nothing. The newspaper reports Fisher’s growth and conservative KiwiSaver funds had between 0.2 per cent and 0.6 per cent exposure to Signature Bank.

With the world banking crisis, you might think bitching about NZ bank profits would fade.

But yesterday, Red Radio had a bank workers’ union spokesman wading in.

First Union researcher Edward Miller said the union would like a 5 per cent levy on the profit of any bank annual profit of more than $500 million, with this funding a “Ministry of Green Works”. In 2022, this would have yielded more than $300 million.

The ministry would build public infrastructure, addressing long-term housing and infrastructure deficits, “including mitigating the impact of extreme weather”.

Meanwhile the financial mess continues in America and Europe.

In the Swiss Government’s bail-out of Credit Suisse and merger into UBS, $US17 billion of Credit Suisse bond-like “contingent convertibles” have been “vaporised” by the Swiss Government.

These instruments, known as CoCos, are popular in Europe because they convert from debt to equity (shares) when a bank gets in trouble.

CoCos have provided up to $US275 billion of funding for European banks, chiefly from private banks and from investors in Europe and Asia. The Telegraph reports that prices for CoCos issued by other banks have now dived.

Primary investors for CoCos are individual investors in Europe and Asia and private banks.

But in far-away NZ, we want bank profits tapped for Green projects.

Instead all we’ve seen is a constant stream of attempted character assignation, of personal attacks, and attacks of guilt by association.

Not once have I seen any attempt to debate the issues Keen raises or points she makes – no, it’s all about attacking her personally and attempting to stop her speaking.

What does that say 1. about her opponents and the power of their arguments and 2. our news media?

Your misguided ongoing Net Zero policies will only make things worse, in particular: continuing down the disastrous energy supply cul-de-sac of yet more hugely-expensive, unviable and hopelessly-insecure wind and solar power; Jeremy Hunt’s recently-announced plan for the nationwide deployment of unproven-at-scale, expensive, energy-inefficient carbon capture and storage, dismissed as “bonkers” all of 9 years ago by energy expert Euan Mearns; pursuing the dead-end of impractical and hopelessly-expensive “green” hydrogen; continuing the expensive importation of foreign natural gas rather than pursuing domestic fracking and enthusiastic exploitation of our North Sea oil and gas resources, currently fettered by Hunt’s energy windfall tax; SNP/Green Party refusal to countenance nuclear power or even gas or coal-fired power essential for grid balancing, synchronisation and backup. To be fair, the UK Labour Party’s Net Zero plans would probably be even more destructive.

And whatever activists tell you, it is not normal. Unfortunately it has become very fashionable. Remember when the Hollywood stars were adopting black children from Africa? Now they are all proudly trotting out their “trans gender” child. I wonder what the next insane craze will be.

  Anyone conversant with the Subcontinent know that the poblic service is simply a means for people to take bribes to get things done. No wonder the defendant was in tears, he was simply carrying business as usual and was persecuted for it.
  Where was the cultural impact statement in this case? Why is one brown skinned person given preferential treatment by the courts and not another.

    We separated the sexes for toileting because they toilet differently (really – ask a 3 year old). It was cheaper to put in two separate spaces with privacy screening between the stalls than to build individual toilets with full stud walls. Unfortunately, the arrangement does make assault or bullying in the toilets easier.
    
    We separate the sexes for changing because, particularly after puberty, most men and women do not want to change in front of strangers of the other sex.
    
    The sensible answer to the transgender question is the provision of more single-user fully enclosed toilets and changing rooms, accessible from common space. This would also help parents needing to change children of the opposite sex and anyone needing toileting assistance whose assistant is of the opposite sex.
    
    But we’d far rather throw temper tantrums and accuse other people of being mean for not agreeing with whatever we say.

I see there is another call that streaming in schools is racist.

If people really ARE streamed according to race then that is unacceptable.

But if streaming is done on academic performance and that just happens to correlate with race then that is an entirely different matter.

Streaming is essential. Without streaming there is no way to fully develop our human capital in the school system.

If you don’t have streaming then you get the really slow and the really bright kids trying to muddle along at the same speed:
* The slower kids can’t keep up, don’t have time to grasp the fundamentals, get frustrated/wag school/ leave early/… They don’t reach their full potential.
* The smart kids get 5 minutes of useful schooling a day because classes are spent trying to get thick Johnny to understand some basic concept. The smart kids do not end up being developed fully. They too get frustrated and bored and and act up/wag school etc.

Nobody wins other than the activists. Everyone loses.

As a country we must develop our top pupils/students. Top pupils/students are highly productive. In the industry (egnineering etc) the top 1% outperform the top 10% by a factor of 5 to 1. The top 10% outperform the average by 5 to 1 too. If we do not develop those people well we lose the vast majority of our intellectual capability.

We see streaming everywhere. There are pub-grade sports teams and representative grade sports teams. People can slot in at the level where they are challenged without being overwhelmed. If we accept it for something as trivial as sport, then why not for schooling?

I went to a streamed school. I entered in the ‘B’ class but got bumped up the the ‘A’ class after 4 weeks. Good thing too, because I was top of the school in science and maths. We ended up getting extra tuition (calculus & first year university maths stuff that others didn’t get). Pretty much everyone in that class went off to university. Many ended up with PhDs etc.

My brother, on the other hand, bumbled along in the ‘C’ class where he fitted quite well. None of them were up to calculus, but they all got developed to the maximum of their capability. A few went off to university and some made it.

We are not all the same. We don’t all have the same capabilities. Let’s stop pretending we do!

I have watched around three hours of her speaking. Now I am fairly sensitive. I despise despots, nazis, and white supremists. So blow me down if I agree with 90 percent of what this woman says.

I bet Michael Wood has not listened to ANYTHING that Kellie Jay Keen has said. All a journalist needs to do is ask him “Can you give some examples of what she is said that is vile and full of hatred?” Of course they won’t do that.

  There are three types of bathrooms:
  Mens
  Womens
  Unisex
  
  You’ll notice it’s not Unigender. That’s because bathrooms are differentiated on the basis of sex, not gender. There is no right of access to female safe spaces for people not of the female sex. The same applies to sport etc.
  
  I have empathy with the trans community and realise they have a legitimate need for safe spaces themselves, but the conversation must be had honestly and openly and the activists simply won’t back down from their unilateral “rights” claim. A starting point of “no penises in female safe spaces” is an entirely reasonable bare minimum.

  Is it appropriate for a Minister of the Crown to publicly give his personal opinion about the worth of someone who has applied for a visa to come here – when he is supposed to be in charge of the ministry in question?
  Is this sort of behaviour approved in the Cabinet Manual?
  I think Minister of Filth Wood should keep his mouth shut on matters pertaining to the personalities and actions of people of whom he does not approve when speaking as a minister of the portfolio in question.
  He is a very unprofessional, but entitled politician.

How about let businesses do this

Newshub can reveal the Government is planning to supercharge our electric vehicle charging network by building chargehubs similar to petrol service stations along our state highway network.

It wants to build 25–34 hubs containing up to 20 chargers meaning there would be a hub every 150kms along our state highways.

Rural New Zealand, the Government hasn’t forgotten you. It wants a charger in every small town with a population of more than 2000 people.

  If these charge hubs actually appear it will be interesting to see how much they cost to use.
  
  Chargenet now charges $0.80 per KwHr to Charge your EV at their chargers. Used to be $0.25 per KwHr plus $0.25 per minute connected to the charger.

  Ghost at the end of the segment I got the impression that they will be built and operated by a private company ?, it didn’t sound like that for a start though with Wood announcing it. I would expect that if there was a dollar to be made then private investors would be interested. Certainly hope so, I don’t see why EV owners should get anymore special treatment.

  One, on their current delivery record, there is no danger of this government actually building these.
  Two, fortunately for electric car owners, the private sector has already begun to provide charging points, for example, in shopping malls and at service stations. If not unfairly undermined by the government, it is reasonable to expect that private provision will match demand.
  
  Three, sadly for renters the government is apparently contemplating a “right” to an EV charger with your rental and sadly for home buyers, a requirement that all new builds have one. I predict the government will be surprised and appalled when rent and new home costs rise to cover this.
