I have a simple proposal to improve overall mental health.

I propose we defund/fine concern trolls who propose socialist solutions to market problems.

Not only will we save a lot of money we will also avoid all the negativity that these people spew which is got to be better for our national mental health.

    Free public health – taken from the NET Taxpayer. Get that? NET. Public Sector do not pay Tax, it is numbers on paper. Show me the cash, where did it come from? The Govt. OK, where does the Govt get money from? The NET Taxpayer!
    Free Education, funded by the NET Taxpayer!
    Pensions, should be funded by the NET Tax paid for in the Private Sector working life. That’s 58 years of Tax for me.

      How about you calculate the ‘net’ tax you have paid so far in your life and then work out how many more years of the benefit and healthcare you have left before that sum runs out.

        * started of negative (cost of your birth)
        * went even further negative as a child (schooling etc etc)
        * univeristy (more)
        * civil service (all taxpayer funded)
        *…

        How about you cease blurring the lines and putting National Superannuation in the same basket as the DPB and the Dole.
        
        The former is an entitlement. The latter two are a benefit.
        
        DPB and the Dole are available to everyone at any time up to age 65, including those who have never paid tax.
        
        Superannuitants have to wait until they are 65. There will be some who have never paid tax but they will be a tiny percentage

        Pension – like all the other things mentioned – is a “transfer payment”. Money that today’s taxpayers hand over to today’s recipients. Transfer payments are also know as “benefits” ….
        
        The tax you paid that went into pensions paid for your parents’ generation. The pension you are getting now is paid by your children’s generation. Like all the other benefits ….

  As soon as you embed free lunches at school the Leftists demand to know why the kids aren’t getting a free breakfast. It is ‘creeping socialism’, and the more it is rolled out the more the nations energy is sapped and the will to work is eroded away. People that could be an integral part of making this country more productive are instead locked into a life of benefit dependence. The more socialism we have the less this country seems to function, but invariably ‘neoliberalism’ gets blamed for any and all problems caused by the encroaching and expanding state. If you are in business and know just how much red tape and compliance is involved you’d be scratching your head and going ‘what neoliberalism?’

  Steve Otto – you are quite right to speculate who is actually pulling the strings at the White House? Joe Biden is clearly not up to the job. He falls when negotiating stairs, he is often confused when speaking and he often works a very short week with frequent breaks for long weekends.
  
  The mainstream media seem to exhibit no curiosity about this. Who is actually in charge?
  
  There has been a lot of speculation in the conservative media and Obama’s name has often come up. He has remained in Washington after his term ended as president. That’s not what ex presidents traditionally do. Why has he stayed in Washington? Is it because we are seeing the 3rd Obama term? That he actually is the power pulling the strings behind the scenes?
  
  Certainly the president has gone far left, for example opening the border to millions of illegal aliens. Joe Biden had generally been seen as a moderate, Obama was always the more radical leader. I strongly suspect Obama is running the show.

      He did give a good State of the Union speech. Clearly Biden is ageing, but if he was as bad in mental acuity terms as many here suggest, there is no way he could give such a speech. Trump said Biden was on stimulants which is how he gave the speech.
      There is no doubt that Biden is losing among young men, and I am sure that is due to his age and frailty (which he didn’t show in 2020).
      I reckon a lot will turn on the debates. They can’t be faked.

It’s just so unfair,I go to the morning shows on tv3 or tv1 to catch up with the propaganda for the day and just lately I’m finding it hard to view tv one because of the subliminal (to me) message of the tattooed ex cop with the chin scribble ,it seems to my pea brain that it’s just another big f—k you to the 90% of their viewers who aren’t Māori .
What would be the answer to a white person when they asked TV1’s management if they could get a facial tattoo because of their Norse heritage? NO is the answer.

A friend with knowledge of the situation was telling us on Saturday nite that the latest Census figures about to be released this month by StatsNZ, show the Maori population has grown to 904,100.

What amazed me, with that number now approaching nearly a million, I honestly can’t recall having seen anyone who even LOOKS Maori in our neck of the woods.

Just saying.

      David Seymour is one-sixteenth Maori from his mother’s side – 6.25 per cent of his genetic inheritance. That proportion comes from a maternal great-great-great grandmother.
      
      On the South Island east and southern coasts, where Maori lived, there was intermarriage with sealers and whalers for decades before the Treaty of Waitangi. This is one reason why there are so many white-skinned Ngai Tahu. There are also many southerners who identify as White who are either unaware, or ignore, that they are a sixteenth or a thirty-second Maori.
      
      It’s about what you identify as.
      
      Seymour reported in the NZ Herald of 14 November 2023, discussing the Maori link on the mother’s side of his family:
      
      ““The Faithfuls were related to descendants of Maraea Te Inutoto from Waimate North. She was a high-status member of Ngati Rehia. We understand that she and her husband Stephen Wrathall settled near Taipa. She’s my great-great-great-grandmother. That’s my Māori whakapapa.”

      Haven’t you heard of “back crossing” to achieve purebred status in the livestock industry? I seem to recall it being used to ultimately create “purebred” European Bison of which only a few genes remained in existing crossbred populations.

      According to Stats NZ you don’t need any Maori ancestry to claim Maori ethnicity so if one parent were to change their ethnicity to Maori then all of their children would now qualify as half Maori, LOL!.

Ambulance called 6 times in July 2021 and didn’t come, woman dies. Coroner says lobby the govt.

But no mention of which government was responsible at the time, that govts extreme covid strategy or the July 2021 “vax” roll out.

In a seperate 2021 report from St John’s, not mentioned in the article or coroners summary, St. John’s said while trauma call-outs were down, self harm and mental health was up and there was a 10 percent increase in call outs. St. John’s also said “This prolonged significant demand is compounded by a challenging work environment due to COVID-19 and longer times for ambulance crews to complete 111 call-outs due to additional safety precautions that must be taken both at the scene, during transport and at hospital”

While the article says nothing of the govts extreme covid response and instead blames the woman’s obesity. A pic of a nz woman with the same name shows a woman who isn’t morbidly obese or bedridden but maybe a size 16 or 18 dress size.

Finally the article doesn’t mention why the person who spoke poor English was in NZ. Were they a citizen or were they visitors being asked to pay $800.

Does Te Whatu Ora’s new equity prioritisation for surgery also apply to emergency services?

Finally why was their no news article of this even in July 2021 from the media?

  Wasn’t that at the peak of the chaos caused by the reactions to covid (rather than covid itself)? There was a period around then when hospital admissions were backing up at good inwards resulting in people sitting in ambulances for hours waiting to get accepted.
  
  Every ambulance waiting for hours at a hospital with a patient inside is an ambulance that is not available to be dispatched to other patients.
  
  At least at some hospitals, this lack of capacity was not caused by lack of beds or lack of ambulances, but rather the lack of staff due in part to many being fired for not getting jabbed.

I usually don’t read his opinions but I came across this interesting comment in Vernon Small’s latest piece in the SST yesterday.

“When it comes to mining on the conservation estate, it should also be remembered that the previous government’s blanket ban was the result of a cock-up by Jacinda Ardern’s speech writer; the Government intended to leave the door open to some mining on stewardship land.
the environmental lobby enthusiastically embraced the supposed ban, leaving the Government unable to go forward and unwilling to go back, condemning the issue to statis by review for six years”.

This raises several questions. Did Jacinda not read her speech before she gave it ; or did she read it and not notice; did she read and think what the hell I’ll just go with it?

      That is one of the worst articles I’ve ever read.
      There is no actual journalism done, just one big personal attack.
      
      For one – pointing out that criminals just come out of jail ready to do more crime doesn’t in any way change the fact that leaving them in longer stops them from creating more victims (in the Public) while they’re in there.
      
      Basically, his position was one big straw man.
      3 Strikes was always about keeping recidivists who can’t stop offending from the public for as long as possible. The deterent argument actually helps the 3 Strikes position as if not even serious punishment deters them, then they should definitely be kept away from potential victims.

  A Destiny Church youth leader has been stood down and a police investigation launched into allegations the man sexually abused youths in his care.
  
  So reading this, I naturally think, “oh this person is a current member of Destiny Church and a current youth leader there”.
  
  Ahh … no.
  
  While the man is no longer associated with Destiny, the mother understands he has now joined another South Auckland church where he is allegedly involved in another youth group.
  
  Okay, so why not name this other South Auckland church? Why name Destiny Church and concentrate heavily on them? Why run the article under a mis-leading headline – “Destiny Church youth group leader stood down, police investigation under way into allegations of sexual abuse”?
  
  AND THEN THEY WONDER WHY NOBODY TRUSTS THEM.

Whether this is true or not, I don’t know.

But it seems odd to me that we’re allowing people to immigrate to NZ in their 70s and 80s without being able to speak English and with zero skills to add to the local economy.

I can fully understand the benefits to them – they get to live in a better country with better healthcare etc (for now anyway). But what is in it for us? What do we get out of it?

NZ needs immigrants to survive. But we need quality over quantity. We need people that bring value to the economy – not just drain value out.

  As someone with two family members in Auckland who have worked as real estate agents for the last 15 years I know this. A well off Chinese couple will come to NZ and invest a few million in order to get citizenship. They will buy a couple of houses in Auckland and as soon as their citizenship arrives they apply for their parents to join them. As soon as the parents arrive they will put them in a house. The parents get to live here and receive a pension and healthcare and all associated social services free, then the children swiftly return to China and continue on with life not having to spend a cent supporting their parents and they also make a nice tax free windfall when the parents die and they sell the house. It is quite a well known scam. Even low paid workers who don’t buy their visas, like Filipinos, dream of bringing their parents out here for the pension and healthcare.

    One must satisfy residency qualifications to be entitled to the pension and healthcare
    To get free healthcare requires a permanent residence visa, which is not automatic for a parent and must be preceded by two years residence before applying
    To get the pension you need to have lived here for twenty years. Five since the age of fifty. I’ve known of Kiwis who were shocked to find out about the last bit when they dipped out

Reported on Newshub that tens of thousands of over 65s are still paying off their student loans.

One Auckland financial mentor said people who had been on low incomes through their lives were sometimes shocked to discover their superannuation was being docked to repay a student loan….. She said half to three-quarters of the pensioners she dealt with had a student loan.

These are people that were clever enough to study at tertiary level, but not clever enough to realise the collector would one day be knocking at the door.

    Reading between the lines, this is people going (back) to university in their 40’s or 50’s.
    
    The example given was someone who did a sociology degree or something, clearly didn’t get any meaningful work (still $5K outstanding) then at age 40 is going back to retrain as a teacher.
    
    Therefore their now reinflated student loan can extend till they’re 65.

    There were no tuition fees to speak of. The biggest expense was actually living. Males could get high paying seasonal work to fund this. Women by and large could not. So women either depended on their parents or went into nursing (paid to learn with cheap accommodation) or teaching (a relatively generous bonded bursary).
    
    There were a pathetic number of scholarships for clever/poor people
    
    Even if you were willing to go into hock for your future noone would lend against it.

      That gender argument is false. Back then women could get work too, and very few male students were able to get “high paying” causal work. You had to know someone to get a holiday job at the freezing works (I did) or wharves. My brother and sister both managed to find work to have money going through university. My sister managed to get through Otago med school without amassing a student loan despite the cost of flatting.

        I was there (1960’s) then too

      Good luck with the “high paying work Ian. Those of us fortunate enough top study Agriculture were required to do 64 weeks of course related work over our 4 year Batchelors degrees. Given Varsity holidays of 16 weeks, the maths aint too difficult. Harvest season 14-20 hour days for a flat $40 per week wasn’t exactly conducive to banking enough to see you through the next year in a state of financial confidence..

    The Newshub article refers to beneficiaries, not necessarily young, encouraged to study to help them move into work. Probably worked in many cases.
    
    Certainly worked for WINZ stats if beneficiaries moved to student allowances and student loan. If they went back on benefit, well the time on benefit clock reset.
    
    Actually similar for start up business loans for beneficiaries. They could stay on benefit for quite a while as they set up the business.
    
    (Had a relative who went from benefit to an arts degree, back on benefit, few weeks short stint in the workforce, business loan that never had any show of succeeding, back on benefit until turned 65. Whew. Total time on benefit or student allowance over 30 years.)

    I suspect some are like a woman I knew who did a BA in her young 20s, then in her 40s she did her Hons and Masters in medieval French history (I wish I was kidding). Perhaps in her 50s she went back for a PhD.

  Student Loans started in 1992. One gets Super at age 65 in most cases. That means all these people were taking out student loans at age 33 and beyond. Just who are these people? Looks like the usual bludgers.

    A lot of people do degrees as a late career change. When I was on the Faculty there was always a number of students in their 40’s. If they borrowed for both fees and living they could easily still have debt 20 years later. Most teachers probably take 20 years or more to pay off a student loan.

      Not long after I arrived in the country, I knew a guy wo worked in the Treasury. Early 30s with a couple of children. Out of the blue, he resigns, explaining that he always wanted to be a doctor. He packed the family up moved to Dunedin to study at Otago. His wife supported the family and he took out the maximum student loans.
      
      Years later I heard that he was a top surgeon. I am sure he had no trouble repaying the loans. 🙂

        The sensible financial advice is, if you dont need the money borrow the MAXIMUM amount you can and put it into the bank. When you complete your qual you can either pay back the debt and keep the interest, or simply keep it invested while you sloooooowly pay it off.
        
        When I did my degree there was interest and it accrued while studying. Shortly after that they changed it to no interest while studying and then just no interest. I believe there is a small admin fee.

        Of course you’d be a prick if you did take the “free” money and shafted the taxpayer – but that is what people are incentivized to do.
        
        Bottom line is that student funding (including subsidizing student loans) should be done on the basis of value to the public – not handed out willy-nilly so that people can study bullshit degrees.
        
        In many ways, student loans etc are really a subsidy to the lecturers – not the students. Without them, most BA lecturers would be unemployable.

        My daughter and son-in-law each have a student loan. ANZ Bank would not lend them money on a mortgage unless they settled their student loans.
        I was dumb struck. I would not want to lend money to people, secured by way of first mortgage, if those borrowers were dumb enough to pay off interest free debt, only to then borrow those funds at 8.65%.
        The logic of that has got me beat.
        But the greed of Aussie banks is immense.

        Only our death or bankruptcy writes off a student loan. If under 18, we need our parents’ consent to take out the loan but that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteeing our loan. We’re still fully responsible for paying it back.

  I knew someone who spent years studying dentistry and extra to be an orthodontist at huge expense.
  Out in the real world she had a mental breakdown when confronted with people whose mouths had been smashed up in car accidents and such like and had to quit the profession
  For awhile she was working in a supermarket with maybe a couple of hundred thousand dollars of student loans
  An unusual case, but don’t scoff at people when you don’t know the circumstances

  I remember reading of young people who left the country immediately after getting their degrees. They were quite open about the reason – to avoid paying back their student loans. It was too expensive to pay back here – they would be ‘poor’ for 20 years if they paid back at the minimal rate. There were stories about using the loans for overseas travel and never attending any lectures at all.
  Then, the government made some efforts to get money from overseas New Zealanders, and present them with an account if they came back.
  I guess there were always some who simply ignored their responsibility and took advantage of the situation.

  You’re assuming these are degrees young people got with the intention of a career. What if they are older people getting them as an interesting hobby in early retirement.. Ird says you don’t have to pay off your student loan if you die. And you don’t have to pay any back unless you are earning $25k. You can also get weekly living and and accomodation allowance. So yeah if your under 55 and lose your job you could theoretically get weekly living allowance and a degree. And then if you retire and don’t meet the $25k earning threshold you wouldn’t ever pay it back or pay interest.

  Then it is charged at 12% of amount received over target level
  
  Currently target level some $24,128. pa.
  Current single super payment $27, 012
  
  Hence compulsory repayment some $13 a fortnight.
  
  So
  $10,000 loan balance, repayments $13 a fortnight
  $40,000 loan balance, repayments $13 a fortnight

Apparently if your council’s climate change policy doesn’t get a big tick from the Office of the Auditor General, government funding for council works will not be forthcoming.
The UN Nudge program continues.

  I agree with the OAG. Increasing frequency of extreme weather events is going to particularly impact the West Coast. They need to do their job. This is not “ticking a box” – the OAG is uncovering negligence.

      It is in their interest to inflate the perception of the chance of a threat.
      The data they refer to does, in their time frame, show that there is an increase in threat, but we must remember that 50 or so years ago we didn’t have the ability to measure at the scale we do now.
      
      There is also the fact that a planet will not alter in any appreciable, or even measurable way, in half a century. That is just ridiculous.

      Actually the bonk bonk thing is not happening. Women – liberated by the availability of contraception – and the availability of work … are voting with their wombs all round the world.
      
      Several countries are trying to sweeten the pot with cash payments to new Mums. Without a lot of success. South Korea has a reproduction rate of about 0.85. So every 100 women have 42 daughters … Do that for a couple of generations (the 42 daughters will have about 16 daughters if nothing changes) and the population numbers fall off a cliff. The population of Italy is on track to halve by the end of the century. Spain is not much different … There are something like 23 countries where populations are likely to halve by the end of the century.

    China’s one child policy backfired. They do not have enough workforce to care for the elderly. I think the policy is still restricted to three children.
    Don’t know much about Japan, but I see Korea as doing it by themselves. They work, children hold them back. I know quite a few on the Shore, businesses, even tradies. Man they can work!

Been reading a few articles on the ongoing Fentanyl epidemic in the US.

Grew out of the overprescription of oxycotin by doctors and a market space for a very cheap substitute to capture.

I’m naive on NZ drug culture. I know we have a meth problem but in US terms that is a drug from a lifetime ago.

Is there a Fentanyl problem in NZ? Or does our isolation and island status present problems in getting the precursors from China into the country (seems unlikely given our meth production).

Are we just “behind the times” and there is a tsunami of problems on the horizon. Or are drug manufacturers deliberately keeping it out?

The figure quoted was a 5% chance of a fatal overdose per year of use.

    One of the big drawbacks of fentanyl is fentanyl, you can very easily get dead for $1.
    
    A lethal dose of fentanyl is 3/1000 th of a gram.

  If it was you would be seeing some very disturbing events.

  Synopsis: 12 people hospitalised with problems associated with fentanyl. They didnt know they were taking it. They thought they were doing some other white powder. All 12 survived
  
  Note: A little after the Wairarapa incident someone was hospitalised in Palmerston North for the same thing – the thought was it was fentanyl sold as cocaine as per the Wairarapa cases.
  
  I googled fentanyl found by customs about 8 months ago, after seeing vids of Seattle and San Fran streets full of zombie like junkies strung out on the stuff. Lead to an article or statement where Police had said it wasn’t a problem in NZ currently
  
  NOTE: There is Fentanyl in NZ in reasonable quantities for use in operations under anesthesia, pain relief post op etc i.e. its a medically useful drug just as Cocaine is. Cocaine paste is used to staunch blood flow in nasal ops for example (at least it was when I got my nose fixed)
  
  As closing comment – if we upset the PCR, which would be a good thing on balance, then you can expect Fentanyl to turn up on NZ streets in quantity. The PCR supplies Mexican drug cartels with Fentanyl and they are distributing it in the US thereby driving the problem… (This is my understanding after reading a few articles in US papers about this a few months ago)

  Fentanyl is used medically here. It is one of the cocktails they gave me for a colonoscopy. Never noticed any difference, already on Tramodol and Gabapentin.
  Then the funny bit. In the theatre I said “there are six people here, why do five women want to look at a man’s bum?” Yeah, they all laughed!

Surely these rangers should be looking for people who are actually causing harm? Common sense would have been to tell the mother to not help the children with the fishing until she had got a licence. The mother would have gone and got a licence or left the kids to it and everyone would have had a nice day.

  I suspect there’s more to it than is reported here.
  
  Legally, if the children are fishing then they should be casting, holding the rod, reeling in etc. The parent should limit their involvement to setting up the rod, tying on hooks, baiting and netting etc.
  
  Far too often I’ve seen parents with their children “fishing”, but the parent is casting, holding the rod, reeling in,… while the child is playing 5 metres away in a mud puddle.
  
  If you’re just casting out once to show a kid how to do it, then fine, but:
  “They observed an angler casting and retrieving a lure which requires them to have a licence, and they did not,”
  
  So she wasn’t just “helping with the casting”. She was casting and retrieving. That’s full-on fishing.

  No, it’s not. She could have got a family licence, which would allow her to fish with her children. BEFORE going fishing. Her children having their licences, she would have known what is required and that it is illegal for her to fish without the licence. Now she’s making all sorts of hysterical excuses. I have no sympathy for her at all.

    Indeed. Which is why commercial pilots are regularly tested in the simulator for emergencies.
    
    I recently watched an interview with a commercial pilot. He said that in 35 years he had experienced one engine failure.
    
    Sadly general aviation (small planes – private pilot licence still has safety problems with safety. Around 200 fatal accidents annually in the USA alone.

      I have had two engine failures
      Once as Student Pilot in a Cherokee 140 doing touch and goes at an airport
      As we started to climb out the Instructor pulled the throttle. Instead of idling the engine stopped.
      Only at about 50′ and we waffled our way to the ground.
      Bit hard but ok.
      I still recall the Tower radioing and saying ‘ I hope you can get it started’- lol
      The second was in a Hughes 500 C helicopter flying over farmland- flat fortunately.
      We were at 500′ and the engine stopped.
      On the ground in less than 20 seconds.
      500’s dont really glide at all…
      Still remember the auto relight clicking like mad but not working.
      That was fuel contamination.
      Training worked. I autorotated and did a nice flair to slide in on the skids.

Does anyone understand why there are still New Zealanders stuck in New Caledonia?

There were about 250 NZers in New Caledonia when the rioting broke out, of which just over 100 are still there.

Some of those will want to be there, so are not “stuck” per se.

The NZ Airforce has 2x 757s, each of which can 140 soldiers + kit (so 140 people).

So in one hit the 2x 757s could have uplifted every NZer in New Caledonia at the start of the rioting, and one could uplift all that are there today.

NZ also has 5 C130s. A C130 can carry 90 troops or around 60 paratroopers, so call that 70 passengers. The 2 C130s could uplift all the NZers in New Caledonia in one hit.

Yet here we are – people still stuck there.

I suppose the French could possibly still be refusing landing but that would be unacceptable.

    There is a second airport more or less in town. Shorter runways. Work for Herc not for 757.
    
    I would guess the lower passenger numbers on the Herc might be related to a range/fuel thing. I would guess that the figures were arrived at by someone who knew the story.

      Even if you only pack them 50 to a Herc, NZ has 5 Hercs and could extract everyone in one hit.
      
      The only problem would seem to be getting people to the airport, but Nomeao’s Magenta Airport’s main runway 4100ft or so. That is ample for a C130, but not enough for a 757. It is less than 4km from the city centre.
      
      C130’s range with a full load is over 3500km. Range to Brisbane is only 1000km. Range to Auckland is 1700km, so range is not the issue.
      
      It seems the biggest issue is not upsetting the French. Nothing else makes sense.

    Banana: Yes, getting the people to the airport is part of the logistics. It seems strange that they can’t do that.
    Perhaps the real problem is that the French won’t allow people to do what is needed (ie. put some boots on the ground, secure the road).
    
    Of course NZ troops seem to be mainly in Europe at the moment doing logistics for Ukraine.

    Luggage should (a) not be a problem and (b) not be a priority.
    A C130 can easily carry 40,000 pounds of payload to Auckland or Brisbane. At 70 passengers that would allow about 250kg per passenger (ie. for person + luggage).

  What I can’t work out is why the C130s have to do complete round trips to Auckland when they could have staged from Cairns and put the “rescued” tourists on commercial from Cairns to Auckland. That would have left the Hercs doing a 1 or 2 hour shuttle service to Noumea.

    I haven’t read Stuff for around three years now – the constant crusading, championing of “causes” and forceful pushing of agendas tells me they’re more interested in pushing propaganda than actually reporting the news without bias or prejudice.
    
    Never watched 3 News/Newshub, and certainly won’t be watching the new offering. If it’s run by Stuff then I quite simply cannot trust it.
    
    We watch One News, but more out of habit these days. My wife, who is very much a traditional person and somewhat resistant to change, nonetheless gets the majority of her news online. We find ourselves skipping through more and more of One News these days as it slowly but relentlessly declines in quality and relevance.

  Maori were mistreated in the past and suffered a number of injustices. No-one argues that they weren’t.
  That doesn’t mean that they can’t succeed off their own backs today. The accusations from TPM etc relate to how these historical injustices hurt Maori today.
  The reason some Maori feel the way they do is because activists/grifters inflame the situation by blaming everything on those historical injustices and pretend there are current injustices.

I must have read ten or more of these in the last few weeks alone. Given its prevalence I guess this sort of behaviour now constitutes Maori values.   I’ve been to plenty of overcrowded pubs/rugby grounds where women have used the men’s dunnies to avoid the long queues outside the women’s facilities
  Nobody seemed to care, or think twice about it until some politicians suddenly found out there was capital to be made out of nebulous perils

    Because men’s toilets aren’t a safe space for men. They’re a place to do your business then leave.
    Women’s toilets serve a fundamentally different role.
    
    That’s why there’s a difference.
    
    We know from recent news etc that a vast majority of women would prefer to come across a bear in the woods than your average man. Why would they feel safe with a “man” in their safe space?

Anyone from Palmy North?- just listened to the interview on the Platform with the Mayor Grant Smith- he and others along with LGNZ signed the letter against allowing referendums on Maori Wards.
What a trainwreck of an interview- the guy has no clue- as Sean said at the end, that was the Mayor of Palmerston North-God help them…
