“Towards a Māori Nation ”

Can a State formed out of injustice be constitutionally legitimate i.e. can rule of law be built on a foundation of injustice? Can a nation arising out of broken promises and unjust taking of other people’s lands, power and lives endure unchanged? The time has finally arrived to conceive, and action change to the institutions of this nation. What those changes might include is the kaupapa of this paper.

Conclusion –
It is clear following Tūrangawaewae, Ratana and Waitangi hui that none of the Māori community are willing to accept “option 1” or domination of the rangatiratanga by the kawanatanga. Option 2 (resumption of a partnered frame) offers the least risk and mutually beneficial upside for Aotearoa/New Zealand. Option 3 (reasserted tino rangatiratanga) is most risky in terms of uncertain outcomes, but potentially has the greatest upside for ngāi Māori. It is therefore recommended that option 2 is pursued first, with option 3 as the fall-back position, with an essential first step being the agreement to establish institutional arrangements to form and operate a new, federated Māori nation.

From a “Maori Nation”, who are in self-generated horror at what Government may do to the Treaty, they are themselves inciting change to the Treaty.
The ART OF WAR says – Already be doing what you accuse the enemy of doing.
In fact, form the enemy into being the Enemy by that very accusation.

Without any reference to the Treaty, ACT’s three points remain –
• the right of the elected Government to govern
• protection of property rights, and
• the equal voting rights and responsibilities of each New Zealanders

At the moment the Maori Nation may be ahead in changing the Treaty

  I wonder if the Maori realize that should they achieve what they want in terms of co-governance or some form of independent Maori nation, there will be a massive exodus of non-Maori from New Zealand. The Maori are creating in NZ the very conditions and reason people like me left South Africa. The vast majority of people living in NZ could work and live overseas, either in Australia or England, or many other places. What will happen to this country if there were an exodus of a lot of these wealth generating families? Certainly the Maori wouldn’t be better off.

        Ghost: The problem is that this has been allowed to devolve into a race-based conflict with a “Maori” position and a “whitey” position.
        
        This is how it is going to stay until “silent Tory” Maori speak up and say that they are proud to be Maori, but they don’t associate with the accepted Maori stereotypes. (By the way, it is the Maori making those stereotypes – not whitey).
        
        Being successful at school is not “acting white”. It is being successful at school.
        Being a gang member is not “acting Maori”. and something to be proud of. It is being a scumbag criminal.
        
        As much as I would want to try get that message through, it won’t stick because I’m “whitey” and thus not allowed to comment.
        
        Thus, it is really up to Maori to stand up and say that wagging school or being a gang member is not “acting Maori”. It is nothing to be proud of. It is just being a loser.

        If you want things to change then it’s up to you and everyone else who want that change to stand up and fight for it. Some are just all hot air then they fuck off to another country. It’s not up to Māori to bring about the change, it’s up to everyone that wants it. It’s up to the community’s to demand change with gangs and wagging. Something our council did by buying gang properties and demolishing them. It’s up to New Zealand to stand against the small part of Māori that are pushing for these changes
        
        Bullshit that the message won’t get through because you are white. Many non Māori are pushing that message as it is and it does get through.         Maori (ie the majority that make up “good Maori”) are the biggest losers in this. Maori are more often the victims of Maori crime. You’d think the “good Maori” would be motivated to say they’ve had enough.
        
        If you (ie. good Maori) want to be disassociated from bad Maori then it is up to you. Only you are in the position where you can. And you’re the ones in the position to gain the most.

        CMM – “whites” (as you call them, I prefer the term NZ European) haven’t been silenced – until we can expect a knock on the door in the dead of night from the state secret police we do still technically have freedom of speech (for now).     No need to speculate. It is happening. In the last year 70000+ left (mostly skilled) and 20,000 arrived (mostly unskilled).
    
    We only have 500k or so net tax payers. If they leave at 50,000 a year and another 20,000 a year resign then this runs out of steam pretty quickly.
    
    Where are we heading? To a land where everyone lives on the highest minimum wage in the world and nobody to pay for it.

      Not a Maori issue but I had a discussion with an investor with $10 million invested in New Zealand. I can’t be too specific on the facts but imagine this scenario. You have a commercial property worth millions. Some guys come along and trash the place causing hundreds of thousands worth of damage. The police refuse to investigate for unknown reasons. Insurance companies fearing a repeat blacklist the property. This was a feature of New Zealand back in the days of Ardern’s government. The investor perceives an attitude who cares if a rich prick gets turned over. To cut a long story short, capital will disappear out of the country fast if we embrace political anarchists.

        Yup, and imagine anyone wanting to invest in something even more complex. For example a factory or a software development company etc.
        
        First they need skilled people to run the place. Those are mostly in the departures lounge.
        
        So they need to attract people: retaining NZers or trying to lure people in from overseas.
        
        Most of those people will:
        * Not be Maori, so when they see this Maori-centric governance they will be turned off.
        * Be educated and expect high quality educational options for their kids (both schools and universities). Disappearing fast.
        * Low crime and other appealing factors. Crime is high compared to OECD.
        * Competent local government : power, pipes and potholes – not corrupt drunkards.
        * A long term future worth immigrating for.

The ‘madness of crowds’ seems to be kicking in as NATO now joins the chorus in calling for allowing Ukraine to use NATO long range missiles inside Russian territory. (read link below).

Ukraine recently destroyed a Russian nuclear radar system deemed critical part of their nuclear warning system.

It also seems that NATO troops will soon be sent into Ukraine as more western leaders saying they are ready to send their young men to death.

  There is a growing concern within the Ukraine and the EU about what happens if Trump regains the Whitehouse in November. The likely outcome is the flow of US-produced weapon systems and intelligence will dry up and pressure will be applied for a negotiated peace treaty, leaving the EU and Ukraine to follow suit or continue this conflict on their own.
  
  The only way this is avoidable is either:
  (a) The conflict is resolved before November
  (b) Biden is re-elected
  (c) Russia carries out an act that is impossible a Trump to not respond to.
  (d) The war has escalated to such a degree that it is virtually impossible to de-escalate.
  
  (a) seems unlikely to occur.
  (b) seems just as unlikely based on current Biden polling.
  
  Which leaves (c) and (d). So far Russia has failed to react to reckless provocation by the West however if the expected F-16s are operated from airbases outside of Ukraine or a large number of NATO troops are deployed into the Ukraine Russia’s ability to not respond will be greatly diminished, so will if the EU and NATO allow weapon systems supplied by them to be used within Russia.
  
  If either of these occur I expect Russia will justifiably carry out strikes on any such airfields, manufacturing plants producing those weapon systems and transport hubs being utilised to transfer them to Ukraine.

    The biggest and most likely source of that capital is the EU.

  Sure, if Ukraine were to penetrate so deep into Russian territory that Moscow and the government were threatened. But hugely unlikely if the war continues to be fought on Ukrainian territory.
  
  Note too that zerohedge is connected with Russian intelligence. Zerohedge is run by Daniel Ivandjiiski, a Bulgarian with ties to Russia, and it echoes the Kremlin’s lines. In Zerohedge’s world financial markets are always on the verge of collapse, the United States is always in decline and Putin is the greatest leader the world has ever known. So I read Zerohedge to get an amusing take on what the Russians would like us to believe, but not for any solid news.

    I just think the dangers of sparking some sort of false flag, or these clowns pharking up some ‘test’ is ridiculously very high.

      And I see the Ukrainians have hit another one of these Voronezh over-the-horizon ballistic missile radars. This time one that was 1,800km from Ukraine (technically quite an achievement).
      
      But this radar was focused southwards towards the Middle East. Even the weaker side lobes wouldn’t have covered Ukraine. So it’s a bit of a puzzle why these are a target.

    Interesting thing about Australia is that the grid system is struggling to cope with the reverse feed from all the solar panels producing power during the day at periods of low demand.
    
    Read that NSW & ACT are going to charge solar owners for feeding power in during the day – some arguments are that poorer folks who can’t afford solar are effectively subsidising richer folks as there are significant costs in altering the grid to absorb two-way electricity flows – the poorer pay for this upgrade but don’t have the cash to take advantage of the upgrade by buying solar. Other argument, apparently the main argument, is the electric grid is just not designed for large amounts of two-way electricity flows and the pricing is a way to discourage this. Sure, there will be some good old-fashioned profiteering by the energy firms as well. Obviously if battery technology becomes more affordable, this may help and there are plans to subsidise battery costs for consumers in NSW.
    
    I’m not sure of the merits of the various arguments but what it does show is that anyone who chooses to make bold predictions about future power price reductions, without any real evidence to support this conclusion, is probably going to look rather foolish when their predictions turn out to be hogwash.

      An issue with solar and part of why you don’t want too much of it in the network is that it’s dirty power, it’s not smooth and the hertz is not a smooth 60 or whatever it needs you be. Hydro and big generators make electricity that is “clean” in terms of its quality which affects many electronics that use it. Flood it with dirty solar and you have a problem. Happened in Germany which is part of why they’re going back to nuclear.

    The only way renewables could make power cheaper for households is if the households are disconnected from the grid for long periods due to power shortages.
    I’m not sure many households will be onside with that.

  I find it interesting the pile on from the media(and some commenters) re the ACC boss trip to Europe etc.
  
  It is pitched as a $32k Business class airfare.
  
  Seems nobody has scoped out the business costs, accommodation, food(including hosting others) internal and short flights….business class is only the long haul part….and appropriate in my view.
  
  But then again. Its a kiwi trait, in my observation, ie slagging off people spending money on “”business”” trips.
  
  I used to own a small/medium business, import/export. Business partner and I agreed.
  Flights less than 4 hours (Oz east coast, Fiji etc) economy class.
  
  Over 7 hours(Asia, Nth America) Business class.
  
  Anyone who has done the trip to UK will attest to ability/non ability to function after arrival economy/verse business class.

    Your ability to function after an economy class flight is entirely in your own hands or depends on your constitution. My wife and our daughters flew economy to South Africa via Dubai. 17 hours + 9 hours, and only 5 hours in Dubai. My wife and I were in excellent condition when we landed and our girls were wrecked.
    We were having dinner with family 2 hours after landing and started our first day there as we normally do, up at dawn.

    The cost is spread across her long haul business class, short haul, accommodations and meals not just the flights. Looking at her itinerary I don’t have any problem with her travelling business class in the long hauls and being expected to attend meetings, talk sense at a CE level and generally be able to perform to a high standard.
    
    Each government department has rules around what classes people travel in depending on the flight duration and expectation of a break before work, I would think this fits it easily.

I fly BC for leisure from time to time and you still arrive feeling like shyte. Best policy for any business is fly the exec economy with 2 nights free on arrival to get refreshed.         Yes, I’ve been following the case very closely. And I do understand the legal basis for the charges, which are sensible. And I think the prosecution mounted a very strong case, with documentary evidence corroborated with first-person testimony. And I think the defence mounted basically no defence at all … which as a rule speaks to the strength of the prosecution case.
        
        And the Judge has been proper, if not exceedingly patient with Trump’s antics. I can imagine what “certain subjects” you’re referring to but no, those aren’t things I’d expect a Judge to allow a witness to canvas. A witness is there to cover the facts, not offer an interpretation of the law … it’s the Judge’s duty to outline the proper interpretation of the law in their instructions to the jury (which we’ll see this week).
        
        I’ll be interested to see what the defence says in closing arguments.
        
        On the merits of facts presented this is an open-and-shut case for the prosecution. But given Trump’s hold on some people it’s possible it could still come to a hung jury (if there’s a committed Trumpkin in the jury), although jury duty does tend to bring out maturity and solemnity in the jurors.

        I will add though, that I don’t know that the prosecution has tightly enough bound the “falsifying business records” actions to an underlying crime.
        
        It’s clear Trump instructed people to falsify business records to cover up the payment to Stormy Daniels. That, in itself, is a misdemeanour (in the US system of felonies and misdemeanours).
        
        But to elevate it to a felony the false records need to be to cover up or enable some other crime. Seems like the most obvious crime to link it to is campaign finance violations (which Michael Cohen was charged with, found guilty of, and did time for). But they could also go with unlawfully influencing the 2016 election (which is the obvious and common sense reason why Trump did all this in the first place). And people talk about tax as a third option here too.
        
        Seems the prosecutions strategy has been to point to all three, but not aggressively tie things to any one. Okay, that’s one way to do it. But we’ll have to wait and see whether it’s enough to get 12 jurors over the line.
        
        In the same vein, I suspect this is one of the big reasons Trump didn’t testify … you’d have to think that under cross they would’ve aggressively pursued all three of these things. Trump is always a walking perjury case and nowadays is diminished enough that I think he’d have fallen apart under tough cross examination. I suspect the prosecutors were hoping upon hope that he would testify, and I can see why his team didn’t let him.

      As Turley writes, the prosecution’s case is three legged stool without all the legs missing.

      On the contrary, the prosecution called witnesses who clearly showed that Trump was a micro-manager, and that nothing happened in the Trump Organisation without his knowledge and approval.
      
      Then you also had Cohen’s first-hand testimony that Trump instructed him. And Cohen has Trump on tape.
      
      And Pecker also clearly tied Trump to the whole scheme.
      
      The defence’s theory of the case appears to be that Cohen paid $130k to Stormy on his own with Trump knowing nothing about it, then Weisselberg reimbursed Cohen using Trump’s money without telling Trump. That stretches credulity beyond breaking point.

        If they hadn’t contested that, and just agreed with the Court that he did indeed sleep with Stormy Daniels as alleged then she likely wouldn’t have needed to be called to the stand.

The inference is that the police recognise this restriction and may even enforce it.

    Mainly support for farmers building dams on their properties as used to happen in the 50’s and 60’s. Required for stock water supply etc.

    I do remember Willis (in the campaign) being very emphatic about how the tax cuts were to be funded by (a) a new tax on expensive homes sold to foreigners and (b) an expanded (?) tax on internet gambling.
    
    Sounded reasonble that the cuts were to be funded by new revenue from previously untaxed sources. Personally I had doubts, but the numbers were repeatedly proclaimed to be “rock solid”.
    
    Winston (I gather) killed (a). I haven’t heard anything lately about (b). All gone away as far as I can tell.
    
    Also I assume – as someone on more than the “squeezed middle” income – the tax cuts (bracket shift) will generate just as many more $ in the hand for me as for someone in the squeezed middle category. I obviously deserve it as a topup to my recently increased pension and my winter energy payment. Thanks Nicola.
    
    At least we won’t be wasting money on the unsqueezed bottom 🙂

Wringing of hands: police and teachers’ pay is at a 20 year low compared to the minimum wage!

Oh, but so are MPs’ salaries… And no doubt doctors, engineers etc.

In 1991, the minimum wage was $6.125. A newly minted computer science graduate would have been on around $28k, a ratio of 4571.

Today the minimum wage is 23.15. To keep the 1991 ratio, a starting computer science job would now need to be $106k. It is only half that.

What does this really tell you?

The minimum wage is too high!

    The 4571 multiplier I used was indeed comparing an hourly rate to a yearly salary, but I was using that consistently so that does not matter.
    
    But we can work in hourly rates if that makes you feel more comfortable:
    On an hourly rate basis, based on 1800 hours a year, a salary of $28k comes out to $15.55.
    
    Thus the 1991 ratio of minimum wage to a computer science graduate was 15.55/6.125 = 2.54x minimum wage.
    To keep that ratio, a new computer science graduate would need to earn 2.54×23.15=$58.77 per hour today.
    
    The actual hourly rate for a new computer science graduate today is around $31.
    
    So around half of what it was in 1991.
    So exactly the same conclusion.

      I get the conclusion was the same but I just thought that using a ratio of minimum wage to annual salary is a bit odd – not exactly an apples v apples comparison. Hourly v hourly, or annual v annual is a much fairer and transparent comparison.

      Regardless, still a good point though and agree – minimum wage is very high compared to previous periods, although with the cost of living issues, rentals etc, certainly wouldn’t envy anyone trying to make ends meet on the minimum wage today.

    The high minimum wage makes it very unappealing for people to get degrees and then work in NZ.
    
    If you come out of school and go to university, you end up with 3 or 4 years of lost earnings and $20k+ in university fees etc.
    
    Your mate who just left school and started earning minimum wage earned $125k and has paid no university fees.
    
    It takes at least 5 years after university for a graduate to catch up in their earnings.

  Minimum wage is way too high. After 27 years working in a very specialized database field and being among the top in my field in NZ I’m only earning 2.9 times the hourly rate of the minimum wage. Or maybe I’m being under paid. No, there aren’t a lot of people in my position being paid more than me.
  It’s crazy that a kid out of school can earn that much flipping burgers, and someone who supports the databases and keeps them alive and running optimally at Councils, hospitals, government organizations, banks, factories, medical aid and health/frail care institutions, to name but a few areas only earns 3 times that after so many years.

The purpose of the bill is to reinforce the treaty itself, not some iwi’s current interpretation of it.

Speaking with a REA the other nite whose company was involved with the sale of the old Kiwi Bacon Factory.
Was telling us Labour paid sooo far over the odds to secure it for their ALR wetdream, it was beyond a joke! Rumor of the figure being 6 mill north of the next closest offer!
And all done in such a rush so as to close the deal one month out from the October election, eventhough Nats had said they would scrap the project.
Once again leaving all hardwoking taxpayers saddled with a white elephant nobody wants.

Some people reckoned the whole thing bordered on fiscal criminality.

I see a job as a ‘Systems Engineer’ in Tauranga paying $70,000 to $80,000 , a ‘Plant Maintenance Technician’ paying $80,000 to $100,000 , an ‘AML Administrator’ paying $28 to $30 an hour. All the highest paying jobs are at Tauranga City Council. This is where the rates money goes….

A simple explanation of the legal background to the Trump trial. Trump has not been charged with bookkeeping offenses (concealing the true purpose of expenses paid to his lawyer). The time period when he could be charged with that has long expired. What he is being charged with is carrying out those bookkeeping activities to facilitate another crime. What is that other crime? The prosecutor has suggested several possibilities (including stealing the 2016 election). Trump has never been charged with or convicted of any of these suggested crimes. There has been no evidence given to the court in respect of any of these suggested crimes. If Trump is convicted it means the jury considers Trump guilty of at least one of these suggested crimes, which will be unknown to anyone except the jury, and with no evidence relating to it presented in court. It would be bizarre for a defendant to be convicted of a crime, when the defendant has never been charged with that crime, and no evidence in relation to that crime has been presented. Doesn’t mean it wont happen though.

    Because the judge is horrifically biased (being a Biden donor with a daughter that has made millions as a democrat operative) and has prevented the defense from being allowed to make their case – preventing exculpatory evidence from being presented (Robert Costello and campaign finance expert Bradley A. Smith) while allowing clearly irrelevant but prejudicial testimony (Stormy Daniels). Any conviction will inevitably be thrown out on appeal due to all the clearly partisan misconduct and errors of the judge – but that can take years, while the whole lawfare game is to create an on-the-books conviction as a tool for Democrat electioneering.

      Costello testified, and he was a disaster for the defence. Honestly, if the judge was biased against Trump he’d have wanted Costello on the stand for longer.
      
      The judge was clear that Smith was free to testify, but not to try to explain the law to the jury. It’s not for a witness to explain the law to the jury, in any trial – that’s the judge’s job. No sensible judge would have allowed a witness to speak on that. But given that restriction Smith had nothing more to offer (he’s not a fact witness) and so they didn’t put him on the stand.

You often hear people on talkback whinging about ‘rising prices’ at the supermarket.
I don’t think it’s so much that as it is more a case of them just having less money.

Tomorrow South Africa have an election.

This is the first time since the 1994 elections when the ANC (Nelson Mandela’s old party) might lose their outright majority.

Much is being made of the ANC losing their way etc, but if you look at the numbers, they really have not lost an awful lot of support. Instead, the ANC has fractured into 3 different parties, together still holding up quite well.

“Mandela’s ANC” of 1994 is now split into:
* The ANC. Polling at around 43%
* MK party (a new splinter group party from the ANC). The name is taken from Mkonto Wesizwe – the name of the military wing of the ANC, which appeals very much to Zulus supporting ex-president Zuma. Polling at 12%.
* EFF: Previously the ANC Youth League which splintered to form a seperate party about 10 years ago.. Appealing to young hotheads, particularly the unemployed. Polling at 12%

Add them up and together they get 67% of the poll – slightly higher than what it got in the 1994 elections with Mandela at the helm, but not statisticly greater.

So while the ANC party itself might drop below 50%, it is really hard to see that there has really been any huge shift in the politics of SA. “Mandela’s ANC” still has the same support it every had.

Of course, this is based on polling. The real test will be what happens in the election.

    Probably more stable than any other coalition you would care to concoct.
    
    Even if ANC get 40% it is virtually impossible for a coalition to be constructed that would exclude them.
    
    The only other party that could potentially form a coalition with ANC is the DA, but that doesn’t seem likely.

What utter bullshit. No wonder we have a police recruitment problem.

It was not the cop’s dangerous driving that caused the death. It was the motorcyclist’s own dangerous driving.

Great to have the scrote off the road so he’s no longer endangering others. Pity for him that he had to kill himself in the process.

    Dream on ! I have been promoting the removal of name suppression for years, and generally get a negative reaction !

Some Maori group in parliamentary gallery this afternoon getting their knickers in a twist. From the Speaker’s chair Maureen Pugh advised them that while permission had been granted for a waitata it is never allowed that speeches are made from the gallery. This was so insulting apparently that TPM and Willie Jackson insist The Chair apologise for stepping on their cultural toes.
Never mind they ought to apologise for not respecting parliament’s protocols.

      Speeches from the Gallery are not required…
