    This is when you realise just how helpless the police are. Imagine how many people they would have to pull over, process, then get court time. Pretty much impossible.       I used to work in the vicinity of parliament and there were frequent marches, big and small (they all knew how to look big on tv), in support of some causes or other at lunchtime preceded by police cars with flashing lights.

  I find it very sad that the Maori Party and its supporters and the Maori Elite show such hatred towards white people like myself. I am sure that my late Father who served in the 21st Battalion and his mates who served in the 28th Battalion in WW2 and who fought together in North Africa and Italy would be equally sad. The brave 28th Battalion did not fight to see their grandchildren demonstrate hatred towards whites. After the war my Father maintained his friendships with many of the 28th Battalion and I and their kids got to know each other and play as kids do. There was no hatred between us and there neednt be now.

In these times of incessant snivelling about how tough life is for so many it’s been encouraging to read a personal account by one of those who fought to defend the world against fascist & racist tyranny 80+ years ago.

I’ve recently read “The Forgotten Highlander” by Alistair Urquhart. As a 19 yo soldier he was captured in the fall of Singapore & sent to work as a slave on the Thai-Burma Death railway. After succumbing to over 2 years of constant beatings, starvation, malaria & cholera he was hospitalised, recovered enough to then be sent with 900 other POWs on an unidentified Japanese “hell ship” transport which was torpedoed by the Americans and Urquhart spent 5 days alone on a raft in the shark infested sea before being rescued by a whaling ship. He was taken to Japan and then forced to work in a mine near Nagasaki. Two months later a nuclear bomb dropped just ten miles away . . .

All POW survivors were required to signed agreements with the British government that they would not discuss the war crimes they witnessed……”During the Cold War those of us who survived became an embarrassment to the British and American governments, which turned a blind eye to Japanese war crimes in their desire to forge alliances against China and Russia.” The government also required official military documentation of the atrocities he endured to determine his military discharge status. Of course no records existed so he was denied the extra disability pay that would have provided.

Alistair Urquhart married Mary in 1946, whom he nursed for the last 12 years of her life. He worked until his retirement in 1981.

He suffered from what is now called PTSD all his life until he passed away age 97. He wrote his book age 90 – “lest we forget”

  Sounds like an incredible account, have to check it out. What stikes me about the WW2 generation is how in the main they all re-built their lives afterwards and made life meaningful. One would like even a grain of their resilience. Another must read WW2 account is “With the Old Breed on Pelelui and Okinawa” by Eugene Sledge.

  It’s actually the Greens that should be facing this challenge. They’re the ones whose obtuse anti-science opposition to nuclear energy and to genetic engineering marks them as unserious about tackling climate change, hunger and conservation.

      And do you think he’ll be able to follow science and support farmers better from the opposition benches?
      
      He’s already having to do a lot of things that are necessary, if the country is to have any chance of getting back on its feet, but which are not popular and which are costing him in the polls. He has to balance doing the politically unpopular with retaining enough political support to remain in power beyond his first term. Opening up the nuclear question will add more weight, possibly unrecoverable weight, onto the unpopular side.
      
      On the other hand, leaving it to this guy to challenge the Greens will hopefully either make the Greens look so stupid, irrational and hypocritical that they will lose their remaining thoughtful and pragmatic support, or it may actually start to change their minds.
      
      Either way will make it easier for Luxon to start a shift away from nuclear-free, than would going into battle himself.

      Rubbish, he wants science to help farmers get emissions down naturally, he has stated GM seeds already used most other countries can drop emissions by 30% he has also stated that any tree planting and emission reductions such as the grasses mentioned should make that farm free of Labours intended emission charging which has been put on the back burner. I can tell you from work also, meetings are happening around the country trying to find out how to cut through farming red tape, so no he is not a James Shaw

        People need to be smart enough or informed enough to understand the links. In NZ we had rental prices go up due to increased regulation & tax changes. Most NZers couldn’t tie the cause and effect together.
        
        Without a leader will NZers realise that Nuclear is litterally the silver bullet to CO2 (if thats your bag) and provides the base power that makes Wind and solar actually possible.

        Something that I misunderstood – there is no law prohibiting nuclear power in New Zealand. Of course resource consent would be required for a power plant. The “nuclear ban” only applies to nuclear weapons and nuclear powered ships.
        
        If it was profitable, a power co could simply seek fast track consent for a power station.

        It might not be banned by law but without the infrastructure to allow building and running plants the ‘affordability’ barrier can never be met. We lack even the basic infrastructure or guidelines to even begin requesting consent.
        
        If we look at affordability, countries like France have proven Nuclear can be made safely and affordably. In many other countries the consenting process, government overheads and other requirements drive the affordability into the ground. This is generally intentional as governments and or environmental groups generally don’t want them.
        
        To get nuclear here a government would have to streamline the build / run process to make it viable. If it takes 10-15years to get turned down (or in the unlikely, approved) for a hydro dam, imagine how many decades it would take for a nuclear plant to get approved.

        The trouble with having nuclear in NZ is that it’s sitting on a super-volcano (Lake Taupo) that blows up every couple of thousand years. It last blew up a couple of thousand years ago. Think VERY deep ash falls and very large areas of devastation. NZ, like Japan is on the edge of a continental tectonic plate that moves often and can have extremely large earthquakes as a result.

        I am a big fan of Nuclear energy and as it is Aotearoa (North Island) with the largest demand then maybe we should have a nuclear power plant on, say Waiheke or Somes Islands (only slight tongue in cheek).

  As of Fri 24 May 2024, Covid 19 Booster 2 uptake is about 1m jabs. By age group it is 18-34 25.2%, 35-49 20.6%, 50-64 40.8% and 65+ 72.7%. Interesting that young adults (18-34 years), who theoretically needed Booster 2 the least of all adults, took it at a rate 25% higher than did their more sane elders in the 35-49 age group. I wonder why that is?
  
  Booster 2 uptake peaked in the winter of 2022 middle of Ardern’s jabbing hysteria.
  
  Booster 3 (which is also defined as including Booster 4, 5, 6, 7…) commenced in April 2023. The ministry is too embarrassed to publish the raw numbers but the uptake graph shows a brief spike consisting of true believers . Probably less than 500k

      Benedict, I use the term “death jab” to refer to the deaths arising in the jabbed population (for example through myocarditis or periocarditis) where the jabbed person was coerced into taking it, for example to save their job or to attend an educational facility or due to social or familial pressure, or simply through propaganda that it was safe and effective even though it was novel technology and inexplicably fast tracked through the normal testing process.
      The coercion was unprecedented, especially as the jab was completely unnecessary for a massive segment of the population (e.g. the young and middle aged in good health and without pre-existing respiratory issues). The Ardern regime apparently succeeded in jabbing 90% of “eligible” people. We saw similar numbers across the western world.
      I am glad that you have not have the $100b sniffle. I have not had it either. As you may have inferred, I’m not jabbed.

        There has always been good analysis of New Zealand mortality data. Not as good as the UK, but quite good.
        
        By 2022 it was clear that the mortality rate for the vaccinated in New Zealand was much lower than for the unvaccinated.

The analysis shows a 62% reduction in the risk of death from COVID-19 among people who had two or more doses compared to those who had received one dose or no doses.     The climate changes, fact, and may well be warming, yes…and maybe it is carbon dioxide in the mix…yep, but the ‘pay more tax/pay more for electricity or at the pump’ which is the scam part. It is more like economic sabotage when China and India DNGAF.
    We would be better to spend a dollar helping developing nations go green, and act globally, rather than playing around at greater cost & lower impact locally.

    That isn’t the point. Almost no scientist, believer or skeptic disputes that global mean temps appear to have risen (using the spotty available data over 200 years) since the end of the little ice age. If you pull out temp stations suffering urban heat island effect, that trend becomes more questionable. Regardless, such trends are most likely simply cyclical.
    
    There is plenty of evidence that this rise is NOT unprecedented, at all. And there is no evidence that Co2 is the control knob for the earth’s mean temp. GHGs create a certain initial “greenhouse effect” which stops the earth being frigid like mars (which by the way has a thin atmosphere mostly composed of Co2. Figure that one out). Once the absorption bands of GHGs are saturated their “warming” effect diminishes in logarithmic fashion (IE they have bugger all effect). Multiple renowned physicists have calculated that effect is less than 1C per doubling of Co2. If we let developing nations develop using fossil fuels, the population will naturally level off at around 9 billion. It’s unlikely we will even double current Co2 levels.

  Today we have a rabble protesting because they think they something special, causing disruption to those that actually work and pay tax, and this at a time the country is an economic basket-case.
  In another universe, we have the architects of our economic decline either swanning around the world getting millions for speaking crap, or sitting in a cozy Vice Chancelor role at a woke university getting over $600K per annum.
  Its just disheartening seeing where the country has got too, and its going to need a leader with a great deal more fortitude I suspect than Mr Luxon to get us back on track.

If you are unsure of what Maori striking/protesting about today, one explanation is –

Can a State formed out of injustice be constitutionally legitimate and can it endure unchanged?
Can a State formed out of injustice be constitutionally legitimate i.e. can rule of law be built on a foundation of injustice? Can a nation arising out of broken promises and unjust taking of other people’s lands, power and lives endure unchanged?
The time has finally arrived to conceive, and action change to the institutions of this nation. What those changes might include is the kaupapa of this paper.

Conclusion
Returning to a genuine partnership makes sense…a vital first step is agreeing and actioning a new model for unity.

It is clear following Tūrangawaewae, Ratana and Waitangi hui that none of the Māori community are willing to accept “option 1” or domitinaon of the rangaratanga by the kawanatanga. Option 2 (resumption of a partnered frame) offers the least risk and mutually beneficial upside for Aotearoa/New Zealand. Option 3 (reasserted no rangaratanga) is most risky in terms of uncertain outcomes, but potentially has the greatest upside for ngāi Māori. It is therefore recommended that option 2 is pursued first, with option 3 as the fall-back position, with an essential first step being the agreement to establish institutional arrangements to form and operate a new, federated Māori nation.

I felt uneasy at Fonterra’s announcement of plans to divest their consumer brands division, because it seemed to be wise to have a diversified income stream for when the ingredients business is performing badly.
However, their reasoning that the consumer brands business is capital hungry and doesn’t perform compared with ingredients makes sense, especially as the failed world milk pools strategy has been cut.

Plenty of critics of Fonterra’s big move into China, but they were all shouted down as apparently it was definitely the right thing to do and the ‘smart corporate executives’ absolutely knew what they were doing. The critics are proved right time and again with this outfit.       I think the assertion that the 20,000 NZs that returned to NZ are less skilled than the 70,000 who departed is incorrect. People who come back have gained life experience and skills whilst overseas (the exception of course is the 501 deportees from Australia, who have perhaps gained the wrong sort of skills!).
      The proper comparison is what MCos points out. Losing 50,000 citizens and gaining 163,000 non citizen immigrants is not good for the country. Regardless of how skilled or otherwise those non citizen immigrants are. It is another of the impending calamities foisted on us by the last government, who seemed to make everything they touched dramatically worse.

    Actually, they got it pretty close to right (despite the fact it’s satire).
    The “crime” that was supposedly covered up wasn’t disclosed until Jury instructions and was offered as 3 separate crimes. The judge said that as long as they all think he’s guilty of something (it can be 4-4-4 for the options), then Trump will be guilty.
    
    Note that there was never any explanation of what the book keeping fraud actually was just that because he made the payments, his treatments of them as legal fees were fraudulent. No witnesses were called to show why that was illegal.

        He wasn’t a fact witness to any of the facts of the case. So the Judge asked the defence what he would provide testimony on. They said they wanted him to explain federal election law. The Judge then, properly, said that witnesses are not there to explain the law, they are there to provide testimony as to what took place. It is the Judge’s job to explain the law to the jury, not any witness’ job.
        
        In this situation Judge Mercan was completely proper and right.

    It’s beyond ridicule. Defense didn’t even learn what the supposed law broken was until after they had been forced to go first in summing up for the jury, it’s Kafkaesque.
    
    Defense were prevented from bringing forth testimony as to the credibility of Cohen and at every juncture prevented from presenting exculpatory information – like the fact that there was no potential campaign finance law breaking (critical for inference that there was a crime in trying to skirt it). There is so much wrong with the judges hyper-partisan behaviour and complete disregard for usual trial process (eg making defense go first in summation without right of response) as well as jaw-dropping rulings in this trial that there is zero doubt it will be ultimately be overturned on appeal, and likely see the judge censured (if that is possible in Democrat New York). The judge knows he has crossed the line so far that he can’t even see it any more and doesn’t care, because the whole raison d’etre of this trial and everything the judge has done is to throw a spanner in Trumps re-election bid, to prevent Trump from campaigning and to manufacturing a temporary ‘convicted felon’ label for duration of election campaign.
    
    I wonder if US supreme court will step in on appeals process. They can take it up immediately if they choose, and are only possible non-Democrat partisan jurisdiction in slow appeals process chain. They would have good reason to do so given huge impact on ’24 election.

Although the media headline says more people “identify” as Maori, the census actually asked if you are of “Maori Descent” and carefully defined it.

Stats NZ says, “The Māori descent indicator is based on a genealogical or biological concept, rather than on cultural affiliation to the Māori ethnic group”

Gisborne Maori wards are the same. You must be of “Maori Descent”.

The law and govt clearly recognises the difference between identifying culturally with a group vs biology and genealogy.

So how is it that people who “identify as women” were allowed to change their ” sex “which is biological on their birth certificates to reflect their identity.

Why can’t i change my descent or ethnicity on my birth certificate to reflect my identity.

Changing your legal sex to be how you “identify” is false and misleading and inconsistent with the way govt treats identity vs biology elsewhere.

As Australia contemplates deporting all violent kiwi crims (they will in my view), New Zealand judges decide not to deport the mama hooch rapists back to australia.

It shows the stark difference in attitude between NZ and Australia. NZ judges love crims. We are not like Australia at all when it comes to attitudes.

        I would guess they never even got round to being PR. Until recently PR was the biggest obstacle to getting citizenship. But anyway – I looked it up – and Oz deports bad PRs. NZ apparently doesn’t if the PR status is over 10 years old.

  A successful murder conviction requires proof of intent to kill. Likewise, intentional damage requires proof you intended to damage. Hence, intentional.
  
  Incompetence, or general negligence resulting in damage to property through a tree falling doesn’t even fit manslaughter, as nobody died.
  
  The tree should have been removed though, and if it was on council property and caused damage then the homeowners shouldn’t have to pay a damned thing to have the damage rectified.

    –
    a person does an act intentionally if he does it intentionally or recklessly, and without lawful justification or excuse or claim of right.
    
    –
    Notice it also allows for reckless behaviour.
    
    If they can show that the council had considered the tree a problem but did nothing about it then reckless may win. However, I doubt that they could prosecute the entity. The offence is more a personal liability. They may be able to use the evidence to support a civil claim.

    I am not a lawyer, but I think you are wrong.
    
    If you intend to commit bodily harm, without intending to kill, but knowing that death is a likely outcome, then you can be found guilty of murder.
    
    But in this case, this was a “freak accident”. There was no intention to harm these people in any way. If there had been a death there then manslaughter charges may fit.

      We had to decide if it was murder or suicide and the judge went to some lengths to explain the difference. It basically revolved around intent, as I recall from a distance of at least thirty years.

  I remember years ago a large tree fell over in Cornwall Park by the ice cream shop and squashed a couple of cars
  In that case the tree was old and decaying, which should have been picked up and the old bugger deleted
  It emerged the council didn’t have adequate staff to go round methodically checking all the thousands of trees in a timely manner and removing the rotten ones.

Trying to figure out what the protests today are for.

Is it people who want the gravy train to continue for longer and for someone else to keep subsidising their lifestyle (ie the NZ taxpayer) and for the NZ government to continue on with running a deficit and continued high debt levels?

If that mentality prevails I’m not staying around long term. Paying far too much tax in this household to support multiple work shy people and families, with their hands out to the government.

Many people have pointed out over the last few days that most Maori are moderate and it is only radical Maori who are demonstrating and calling for special treatment.

Fair enough, I accept this.

As I have said a few times, it is up to those moderate Maori to stand up and claim their voice back. If they do not then we get what we’re getting.

  So radicals and zealots rule the modern political and governance landscape.
  
  The solution is to hand power back to the masses via binding polling on contentious decisions outside of very narrowly defined areas. Stop energized zealots and the captured institutions they rule from dictating to the disinterested masses. Include judiciary, NGOs, local govt and other public bodies.

I had to go in to work today. What a sight in downtown Auckland – lazy layabouts shouting doing raucous hakas and waving flags. Lots of posturing and strutting, morons on motor bikes riding through the pedestrian only square. Saw some of the mob getting into taxis to go home afterwards. Ironic. Without European settlers they’d be walking. Just a bunch of loud mouthed idiots. Meanwhile the good folk of Auckland went about their work and studiously ignored them

Something about not interrupting someone when they are making a mistake – they will rial some insane individuals up, and they will do something really stupid and the pendulum will swing. Tough times coming for theft-vulnerable copper power lines?

Copper prices will quadruple to $US40,000 a tonne over the next four years, forecasts a leading world commodities speculator, Pierre Andurand, a hedge fund manage.

He forecasts it will take more than five years for supply to catch up with demand.

Copper reached a record $US11,100 a tonne on Monday, but since has eased to as low as $US10,410, the Wall Street Journal reports. It is still up 22 per cent this year.
