I for one am glad to see Spiked has brought back to the forefront the fact that Greenpeace is masterminding a genocidal campaign to kill children in Asia by leading a campaign against Golden Rice.

To quote the article “Vitamin A deficiency is the world’s leading preventable cause of childhood blindness. It is widespread in Africa and south-east Asia. Every year, up to 500,000 children go blind due to vitamin A deficiency and half of them die within 12 months of losing their sight. “
But oh no, the “deadly risk” of GMOs means those children have to die. We must maintain the purity of our virtue signallers. So they run a campaign using all the dirty tactics that only neo-nazis are supposed to do. Greenpeace lies and has no compunctions about doing it. They fundraise off their mendacity. They then rely on their science-illiterate EV driving idiots in the leafy suburbs to promote and support their efforts.
Remember this next time you hear Greenpeace’s political wing in the NZ parliament ranting on about Gaza or some cause-de-jour. The organisation is full of murderous humanity-hating hypocrites. Calling them misanthropes is underplaying their nastiness. It is the blood of millions in the third world on their hands and MPs in our Parliament are part of it. Chloe – you are a killer.

    There’s a massive problem in the ‘Global South” with indoor cooking . Makes children and young persons really sick and no doubt # women who do all that work. Hundreds of thousands die every year from respiritory illnesses associated there with.
    
    Meanwhile cos no white folk are affected , no one gives a shit .
    
    To save those lives we need to lock down , work from home and spend billions to save ’em.
    
    Additionally we need campus protests and weekly marches together with a BDS campaign to save them, if not blood on our hands!

  In Oz now about 1/3rd of houses have rooftop pv, and you can buy long-life battery energy storage systems from China for about US$150/kWh. For most home users in sunny places rooftop pv is now tipping over into being long term cheaper than grid supply.

    There are two things you didn’t cover in your praise.
    The first is the domestic power is so expensive because of all the subsidies (direct and indirect) to the unreliables.
    The second is the houses need to be grid connected to get the voltage and frequency control, inertia, plus provide the support when it has been dull days in the middle of winter. Have battery support for 5 days suply plus replace batteries every 7 years and solar cells every 10 then see what the economics is like.

      Or you can install a lot of excess pv. A 15-20kW rooftop system produces a couple of kW even on a cloudiest days and have a small petrol genset for emergencies. The components are cheap, (~$10-15k) so it’s economic if you have the inclination/motivation and can do the install yourself (no electrician needed for <50V portions of system I believe).
      
      I think most homes in sunny North Island locations will go off grid over next 1-2 decades. Especially as EV market grows and batteries get ever cheaper.

      Nope. The FBI agent testified yesterday, in the Hunter Biden trial, that they could not guarantee the laptop was genuine.
      
      The chain of control of the laptop is hopelessly compromised. It’s clear there is some genuine Hunter Biden content on there. It’s not clear how it got there (likely from hacked Apple backup). It’s also clear there’s some fake content on there too.
      
      That’s very similar to the situation with Macron’s emails too. Both have a lot of hallmarks of Russian intelligence operations.

    The big advantage the Allies had was logistics.
    
    The invasion of France was still a close-run thing a month after D-day. But the Allies were moving in a huge amount of additional people and material every single day, and eventually sheer weight of numbers prevailed.
    
    (Yes that’s a big simplification, and air superiority was also a big factor … but ultimately their logistics prevailed)

      It also helped no end that the vast majority of the Krauts were battling the Reds . That the idiot Hitler kept a huge army ( granted of second rate troops) in Norway , cos WSC’s commando raids and previous Narvik etc interventions; that the British double agent system helped convince them the main invasion was Calais ( Paton’s non existent First Army Group , Op Fortitude ) . the resistance slowing down German communications and movements behind the front. the non release by Hitler of the armour . And indeed will we ever know how much treachery was involved by elements of the German high command in the whole thing.
      
      naval and air superiority were crucial as a precondition to the invasion.

        But the key thing in the first 4-6 weeks after D-day was the Allies ability to keep landing more and more weight of numbers into the Normandy salient.
        
        The Normandy landing was a real arm-wrestle for several weeks, with little progress beyond the beaches. It could easily have failed if the Allies hadn’t been able to keep reinforcing their position.
        
        Ultimately armies run on logistics.

        The special pre built harbours ( one wrecked in storms) the fuel pipe line etc
        
        But all that would have come to nothing without the numerous factors above .
        
        Esp the simple fact that the Germans spent the vast amount of their resources fighting the Reds .Along with the total air superiority ( a precondition for invasion) and almost total naval .
        
        Some people say the turning point of the war in Europe was D Day , it wasn’t ,it was Stalingrad .
        
        It has been said , I think WSC ,that Hitler’s biggest mistake was he had to be strong everywhere ie fighting on numerous fronts without a good central reserve that he could throw at problems like Normandy .
        While the western allies were able to put the vast amount of their resources into one major operation , Normandy . But again remember they too were tying down German forces from Normandy with the Italy campaign , as well as the landings in S France.
        Not to mention the air and sea campaigns .All were major fronts aginst Germany.
        
        No amount of logistics would have counted had Hitler been able and willing to throw manpower at the tenuous beach footholds .But he was too tied down.

The crash in EV sales in New Zealand is spectacular. Not in a good way if that is your line of work. EV market share 4 percent. 😕

Markets that are created by subsidies often have spectacular falls. The imposition of road user charges on EVs was the last straw for the market. It simply means that for most people they are terrible value for money.

  Just an addendum. It is not clear whether these EV sales figures include EV sales to government agencies. Does the government still have an EV target for government agencies? Perhaps agencies have quietly gone back to buying the $25,000 Toyota Yarris instead of the $70,000 EVs. The latter never made sense. It was simply a direction from the last government.

    The government contractor class “buying a Tesla for the business” was rampant during the subsidy period. For a Tesla costing $77,500 (this is approximate), you got a $7,500 “clean car discount” so you paid $70k cash or on tick. Then you claim a GST refund of 3/23 of the $70k ($9k refund). You then depreciate the remaining value of $61k, writing off an additional $17k ($61k x corporate tax rate 28%) over the next 5 years. Over five years, your company has paid $44k for a $77,500 car and the taxpayer subsidises you for the remaining 43% ($33.5k / $77,500).
    
    You may have to return some depreciation recovery income (at 28% of the “profit”) if you sell the car and get something for it having written the car’s value down to zero over 5 years. I’m not sure of the market value for a used electric car with a five year old battery.

  I heard some bloke being interviewed on The Platform a month or two back, who was suggesting that the downturn seen in Jan/Feb was a bit of a blip, and he thought EV sales would pick up again.

  Back to EVs… if these sales levels continue I doubt that all the dealerships will be viable. In May, 44 Tesla Model Ys were sold. May 2023 it was over 1,000.

      No idea. The ones that are written off are where there is any damage at all to the batteries. The risk of a fire is so high that the insurance company just writes off the vehicle. Given my record of backing into rock walls/bollards/garage doors, I am not sure I want an EV.

      That is why insurance costs are high.
      Recycling an EV is not that hard. It is just very hard to find someone that can take care of the job.
      
      4% market share (and increasing) may well be the catalyst for a niche opportunity to service and recondition EV batteries. Testing and replacing battery components are labour intensive, technical and expensive.
      
      The technical part is 😎 and the expensive part tells us that there may well be competition in this market in future.

        There is already quite a market in refurbished batteries, but, being second hand, they come with built in extra range/life anxiety.
        
        There are some people also replacing faulty cells too.

        Balance of third party is the only insurance needed if one drives an old Leaf like me. Now I just need to find someone that will accept an old Leaf as a gift.

    Even more confusing is that some iwi like Waikato don’t employ macrons for a long vowel sound…they double the vowel…
    
    so going to be difficult to know whether it is a long vowel sound or 2 separate vowel sounds when you first come across some words.
    
    Doubling the vowel instead of using a macron is widely used in some iwi, most strongly in Waikato, and some te reo Māori words contain double vowels, which are different to macrons. Whakaahua (photograph) and ātaahua (beautiful) are examples.

    Rubber is composed mainly of many CH bonds – just like gas or petrol. When that is burned:
    * The C changes to CO2.
    * The H changes to H20.
    All the other much like sulphurs generate various nasty compounds.
    
    Coal is almost entirely carbon, making CO2.
    
    If all you’re worried about is CO2 then burning a hydrocarbon rich compound (gas, oil, rubber…) makes more sense because you’re getting less CO2 for a given amount of heat – thanks to all the hydrogen being burned to make H2O.
    
    That is one of the reasons Cindy’s shutting down gas is so daft. Shutting down gas and replacing it with imported coal is plainly nuts.

    They don’t burn whole tyres. The tyres are shredded into pellets. They can also be heated to turn them into a liquid.

    Most black smoke is due to incomplete combustion. The black is soot – unburned carbon.
    
    As with burning all fuels which can make soot (oils, gas, rubber etc), the solution is to improve combustion (eg. burn hotter with more oxygen).

    I heard them saying the PM will be looking into what to do about this when he gets back from overseas next week. Will be interesting to see where it goes from here. Even heard Willie this morning on telly saying it needs to be fully investigated.

Interesting to read that the home delivered Wellington Post Newspaper which sometimes masquerades as the holier than thou “Stuff” is once more increasing the price of their Newspaper to continue their one sided biased attack on the democratically NZ Government elected on 14 October 2023 .
Pity they didn’t do the same attacks on the Ardern/Hipkins/ Robertson/Green/ Ctu/ Public Service unions in the period 2020- 2023 .that was when NZs hard fought for democracy took a real beating .
Yet to read some of the daily bias coming out of the joke that keeps giving they are blaming the new Government as if they were the then Government .
Biggest and worst example and there are many.
The so called cartoon attacks on our Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and others in the new elected Government by some type of faceless clowns looking for a reason to justify their employment .
Hard to believe that people will once more pay an increase to supplement such Media Bias .Not forgetting the Good Friday and Christmas Day charges for newspapers that don’t get delivered on those mentioned days .

When something went wrong that needs fixing now, if is was done under a National Government, that is always clearly stated on RNZ. When things went wrong under Labour, it is always a ‘previous government’. Daily small examples of a larger problem of bias – which of course RNZ denies.
National ministers are abruptly shut down if they dare to lay any blame on Labour although Hipkins is given free rein to lambast National.
Perhaps National needs to start talking about ‘yet another Labour mess’ – the health mess, the education mess, the roads mess, the ferry mess, the polytechnic mess.

I remember when

King Charles really did appear to be the right person to be King at the D-Day memorial.
His speech seemed to touch every base and perfectly fitted the occasion and this historical event.
In contrast Justin Trudeau seemed light weight and spoke as a politician.
The importance of the recognition and memories of those who were involved at the time made the ceremony the event it was meant to be.

  Eric Holder, Obama’s Attorney General, was held in contempt of Congress back in 2012 because he refused a subpoena to testify or hand-over papers to the House committee investigating the Fast and Furious scandal. The vote was 255-67 and included 17 Democrats.
  
  Naturally there was no follow-up of arrest and trial because such things were not done to such high and mighty people, only little people (and even then pretty rarely). BTW, another Trump advisor, Peter Navarro, is also serving jail time for also telling the Jan 6 committee to shove it.

I would like to see a lot more media coverage comparisons like the budget one from yesterday. It would be great if this blog could take the lead on that and really hammer them hard. It is so easy to do using google searches, e.g.:

“george santos” site:nzherald.co.nz

“anthony weiner” site:nzherald.co.nz

The first results refer to Santos consistently as a Republican but the second results don’t mention the Democrats. He’s just ‘former congressman Anthony Weiner’.

It’s all the little choices that add up to a large amount of bias.

Tried staying awake last night for the Women’s semi featuring Iga and Coco.
Unfortunately, the combination of a few wines, a gas fire, and the velvet Chaise, all became too much to handle. I fell asleep just before it began.

However, I did get to see the live ‘State-of-Origin’ match between Queensland & NSW. Why anyone would chose to play such a dangerous sport for 80 minits in torrential rain is beyond me! Mud and blood everywhere. It was just ridiculous 🙁

  Interesting Steve that the judge that has run this case, and has finally had enough of Bannon delaying and has instructed him to turn himself in no later than 1 July … was appointed by Trump.
  
  Also, Bannon is scheduled to appear in another court case in September. And the judge in the case is … Judge Merchan. Fresh from the recent Trump trial.
  
  Bannon has to do 4 months in the clink for blowing off the subpoena. But presumably he’ll be out on some sort of release for the September trial, which will pause his 4 month sentence. So he’ll likely end up in Federal prison out beyond the election date.

  Yes NZ’s future trade etc is important but it’s the 80th anniversary of D Day, a day that helped make the world what it is today. It wasn’t a surprise event that just popped up in the calendar.
  New Zealand stood shoulder to shoulder with its Allies throughout two world wars. Luxon’s effort amounted to a tweet pre-written by one of his social media team.

Once again the officials will rule on the results of the tackle and largely ignore contributing factors.
The tackle was always going to be chest high so did have a risk element,
However, Walsh lowered his body to make his pass and then his feet slipped from under him.
The pass was always going to be made under pressure and the tackler did have a chance that they may have been able to prevent it.
All at high speed and with minimal reaction time.
Still must look as if they are doing their job rather than considering preventative actions.

  Surely it would be enough to hear the defence make a statement of mitigation before the judge retires for 15 minutes to consider the penalty.

  I note high praise from the judge for the defence submissions. This suggests this man will escape a conviction, although this may be problematic with the later charge of assault with a blunt instrument.

Strange that there weren’t more articles like this the past several years. We would get the occasional waiting list article, but now it seems to be a lot more. I know when the points went up for hip and knee replacements one of the senior orthopaedic surgeons down here told us people will die before they get their replacements

      I’m amused by the automatic take of some people that dying by rationing is more ethically acceptable than dying because you don’t have enough cash or your private insurer won’t cover the condition.

        The worst part is that Mike won’t comprehend, the surgeons down here were begging to be allowed to operate, instead they were told to take leave rather than push people up onto the list that needed the operations but weren’t meeting labours new points.   Every time Maiki Sherman appears, before she even opens her mouth she’s been judged by the viewers. It will take a very long period of time before she shakes off that “frothy and sensationalist” stigma.

The Co-Leaders of Te Pāti Māori have written to the Prime Minister, the Police Commissioner and Minister of Police seeking the Police lead an urgent investigation into the allegations made against Te Pāti Māori.

“Whilst we have welcomed the independent review initiated by Statistics New Zealand, we consider that given our knowledge, these allegations are frivolous but require police to sanction our view,” said Party President John Tamihere.

“We have asked the journalist to front with the evidence on behalf of those making the allegations. They have not.

“We welcome an immediate investigation into these allegations to once again prove our innocence, and to highlight the bias in media,” concluded Tamihere.
