        Some theories I have heard
        1. Barry can stand as VP. Biden leaves (in a bag or of his own choice) and Obama gets another 2yrs. During his 2 yrs he selects his replacement.
        2. Barry comes in as VP and runs the govt while Biden is the token President. Some claim Barry is already running policy from out of government.

        I dont believe Barry is excluded by that clause. As I mention above, he has 2yrs (of his 10) remaining. He cant run for president, as you can only do that twice, but as he has 2 yrs left he could run as VP.

        As much as many (on both sides) would like that. The ability to add an amendment to the constitution requires overwhelming support. Its highly likely we never see any further amendments in our lifetimes.
        
        The most recent amendment was enacted in 1992 but was initially proposed over 200+ yrs earlier! It deals with congress salaries, so hardly controversial.

Aussie shearing…….
Worth a look as I used to occupy Number Three stand and do 2-300 a day..
So first thing standard handpieces and standard fan concave combs instead of all that Union gear.
Fair enough
And those shearers do and I quote ‘120 a day tally and some get to a 200 a day tally.’
And if they dont get shorn they suffer from the heat. Honestly that was said
At my age its hard to get the jaw back up off the floor and quell the hysterical laughter….

    In my youth (school teenager) holidays I used to fleecoe for a shearer who regularly sheared 350 sheep per day – start @ 6.30, breakfast 8 till 8.30, smoko 10 till 10.15, lunch 12 till 12.30, smoko 3 till 3.15, finish the day @ 5 pm. Hard but enjoyable work. The other shearer did around 250 per day, so the sweat was really pouring out. Great years of my youth, learning how to work hard & be self reliant – and earning big money – 20 quid per week back in 1956,57,58.

      The election that’s just been held was for the European Parliament.
      The election Macron has called is for the French Parliament and will be held on 30 June and 7 July (Ringo’s birthday)
      The talk is Le Pen may conceivable by PM, which gives her a couple of years to butt heads with Macron before she runs for President again.
      Who knows what will happen in France, but one thing’s for sure it ain’t like here.

  He is still President. He’s announced parliamentary elections – his party no longer had a majority anyway and they were using arcane constitutional procedures to legislate without the required majority – there was a strong likelihood this Legislative Assembly election (their parliament) would have to happen anyway.
  
  As President, he doesn’t have to face re-election until 2027. Even then, the way the French presidential voting works it’s unlikely, not impossible but unlikely, that the far-right candidate can win. No candidate usually wins in the first round – what usually happens is the far-right candidate tops the first round or is a very close second to the incumbent (centre-left or centre-right), but in the second round the establishment parties encourage their voters to ‘hold their nose’ and vote for the alternative to the far-right candidate. This usually sees centre-right supporters vote for the socialist, or the socialists vote for the centre-right, all to keep out the far-right candidate – you even see far-left supporters vote strategically to keep the far-right out.
  
  Macron may be wounded but by no means out.

        While some people may certainly have labelled the previous government communist, marxist or far left, this is not something that would ever have been reported by media – not even by association.
        
        Furthermore, by any reasonable definition, a lot of Green policies would certainly fall under the far-left banner but again, you never read about the Greens being labelled as a far-left party, Communists or Marxists by the Media.
        
        By contrast, think how quickly Todd Mueller was smeared due to the MAGA cap issue – while it was never claimed he was far right, the media were certainly happy to report the far-right association with the MAGA cap. (Strangely next to nothing on the Hillary campaign button he had).
        
        Don’t get me wrong – Mueller was an imbecile and was totally unsuited to leadership but it highlights the clear inherent bias the media has.

        I don’t know how you can say Todd Muller was an imbecile. That’s a bit rough.
        He was clearly unsuited to the position of Leader of the Nats and shouldn’t have listened to those who promoted him to challenge Simon Bridges.
        He said his very brief spell as leader had had a negative impact on his mental health pretty much right from the get go and that sort of talk is a real no-no in NZ politics.

      The Euro trash media are describing just about any party that has concerns about immigration as variously “hard” or “far” right.
      The ludicrous thing is many of these parties have left wing populist policies particularly around an expanded role for the state i things such as health and elderly care .
      
      The labels apply particularly to the newer parties that have emerged in recent years and are not applied to the traditional social democrat or centre right parties.( many of whom are also “anti immigrant” like the Danish social democrats)
      
      Just more shit legacy media lies ,mis/disinformation.

      Perfectly fair question.
      
      Apologies in advance for the length of the reply – I’ve read a lot on the European political scene (political tragic) and the term ‘far-right’ is certainly being thrown around constantly with very little explanation as to the policy platforms these parties hold.
      
      France is actually a good example of this. The current ‘far right’ grouping in France is currently grouped under the label of National Rally (RN). Depending on your viewpoint, the RN is either a somewhat toned-down successor organization to the previous National Front (FN) or just a rebranding exercise – lipstick on a pig (I’d personally say a little from column a little from column b). The current chair is Marine Le Pen and she has certainly attempted to soften the image of the old organisation her father (Jean-Marie Le Pen) built up. She’s certainly been reasonably successful electorally (did pretty well in the 2022 presidential election at 41.45% to Macron on 58.55%) and she will probably run the establishment candidate close in the 2027 presidential election (unlikely to win for reasons noted above and may not even be her standing). Her father’s organisation was certainly far-right and I think few could argue against that (holocaust denial etc). The current organisation, National Rally, would still have some policies that are clearly far-right but also a lot of policies that are fairly reasonable.
      
      You tend to see the same pattern emerging across Europe. The parties that are termed ‘far-right’ all tend to have some rather unsavory characters in their midst and certainly have some policies which would fit the ‘far-right’ tag, but they also have a lot of policies that resonate with a fair chunk of the population, particularly the white working class / lower middle classes who feel left behind with the neo-liberal European project. These folks tend to get labelled as bigots / racists but their feelings of isolation are real – they don’t see mass immigration as great (more pressure on scarce jobs / housing / infrastructure / schools / medical etc) and they don’t have a voice in the mainstream left or right.
      
      Are these parties ‘far-right’? Well they certainly have some policies (and individuals) that would qualify for that label but they also have many policies that are relatively sensible.
      
      What I find illuminating about this is how quickly these parties are slammed by the centre-left, centre-right and the media. You see it in the current reactions to the European Parliament elections.         In response to your query, in simple terms, the Republican party would be between Macron’s party and the far-right National Rally.
        
        In truth, it’s really difficult one to answer as to what they would look like in NZ context. Just like it can be argued that sometimes National can look like Labour-lite, the French dividing lines can similarly be difficult to define. Quite ironic when you consider that the French are actually the origin for the terms left-wing and right-wing (harks back their revolution Assembly apparently).

    This is the game all councils are playing. Determine a rates rise of n% and announce a rates rise of n+++%. Then get people happy that you are only rising by n%. Wow what a good job.
    
    It’s like the coucil project costs announcements in reverse. Announce the project at 1/3rd or 1/4th the actual cost and get sign off. Then slowly annouce blowouts until you get back to the expected cost.

        In talking in general. I dont think Gabrielle had anything to do with the rate rises in Wellington or any South Island council 🙂
        
        I just see a trend where a council comes out and says ‘sorry rates are going to be up 15% next year’, then three months later they say ‘due to our hard work and listening to constituants, we have managed to reduce the increase to 11%.’ At which point people are really happy they dont have a 15% increase.
        
        To me they are playing games. If they had come out and said ‘due to our hard work and listening to constituants, we have managed to keep the rates increase to 11%.’, people would be up in arms.
        
        How many more years can councils keep putting up rates by 2,3 or 4x the current inflation rate?

1 – What else has the Waitangi Tribunal and its ēlite adherents misinterpreted to compare to their “mystical all-encompassing” definition of taonga?

2 – “property procured by the spear” actually defines tango as somebody else’s treasure, it means “property obtained by violent theft” – like land supposedly stolen by white pioneers?

3 – Does Parliament also need to define taonga?, David Farrar’s questioning headline, implies widening the “principles” already looked at by ACT, in particularly their website, to include taonga.
But I would suggest strongly the term te Ao o Maori also be looked at, and that “Government is secular” be fully re-asserted, to remove any Maori religious world-view from legislation and any Parliamentary behaviour and considerations as well – as Christianity, Islam and any other religion does not appear in general legislation

I’m not sure how to feel about the Broadcasting Standards authority telling us the political editor of our state TV channel is not required to meet the usual standards of accuracy in her reports.
Maiki Sherman doesn’t seem to have any particular knowledge or acumen and she clearly doesn’t need any if she can say what she likes without regard to accuracy.
In fact we could have any old reporter spouting off while we go and make a cup of tea or check what’s on Netflix.

I wouldn’t want to come to the notice of the Police for something I didn’t do. I wouldn’t trust the system one iota. Watson is very obviously innocent. How it ever went to trial in the first place is quite beyond me. He didn’t resemble one iota the identikit pic that was made from information given by those in his vicinity that night and his boat didn’t resemble one iota the boat the witnesses saw Ben and Olivia being dropped off on. So, wrong man, wrong boat. Full stop. The rest is a great big miscarriage of justice and shames our country. It needs to be admitted that his conviction was totally wrong.   Too many ads with overweight Polynesian men being stupid or childish or just plain dumb. It surprises me no-one ever complains. It’s hard to think of any ad aimed at Māori or Pacific Islanders that shows them in a mature, dignified light.

‘RNZ has named a new co-host to sit alongside Susie Ferguson for its Saturday Morning show.

Respected television and radio broadcaster and journalist Mihingarangi Forbes will join Ferguson, RNZ announced today.

In a statement, Forbes said: “After many years of current affairs and more recently documentaries focusing on Aotearoa’s history, this is an opportunity to explore new subjects including lighter topics.

“I’m super excited to be part of a new kaupapa and sharing ideas to entice new audiences.”’

Dale Husband disgraces himself with his ignorant, fact-less, incoherent views on many matters including energy supply and oil and gas etc (he seems fine if we get it from overseas and others intervene in their environments but we must not allow anything so base and venal here) but the real kicker is his predetermining of the outcome of any TPM/Manurewa Marae use of data investigation before it has even got underway.

And what’s worse, he doesn’t seem to believe there are even any issues here – mixing up the using of personal data is just the Maori way, apparently. He also labels the Marae staff who have made the assertions as ‘disgruntled employees’ and TPM and others have done absolutely nothing wrong except want to help their people……

Math was never my thang at school….. but people are saying Labour paid out 192,000 ‘Clean-Car-Discounts’ of up to 7k per vehicle over the life of the scheme. With 21,000 of them going to Dealers.

How many unfunded life-saving cancer drugs would that have paid for?

‘Kāpiti-based MP rents back his Wellington flat at taxpayers’ expense

A National MP is claiming a $36,400-a-year housing allowance for his own apartment — despite living just 58km from Parliament, writes The Post and Sunday Star-Times National Affairs Editor Andrea Vance.

Ōtaki MP Tim Costley owns a $1.4 million riverside home in Waikanae, two rental properties in Palmerston North, and a Wellington flat. He claims the taxpayer-funded perk for the capital property, where he stays during the weeks Parliament is sitting.

MPs are entitled to claim $36,400 a year if their main residence is “outside the Wellington commuting area.”. But the rules don’t specify a minimum distance.’

About 8 months into the job (that’s almost a quarter into their term) and we still see some of the most outrageous Labour bumblings are not being addressed.

Sure, many things take time to change (eg. the whole education system). But some things can just be dealt to. Immediately.

The Te Huia train is still running. Why? Sure it has a funded trial period until the end of this month, but with such an obvious, and dismal, failure it should have been killed in the first week of National taking office. There is no need for taxpayers to fund the whole trial.

  I was told of a case recently. A lady who had been sick for months was diagnosed with cancer. When they went back over her records they found it in a scan several months prior that they had missed.

  OK, there shouldn’t be, but any system has its flaws.
  
  Sure we could reduce those flaws by a very large % by performing twice as many tests and investigations. But that would be very difficult to achieve with the resources available.
  
  A few years back I had a fracture in my leg that the doctor & radiologist missed on my xray. The orthopedic surgeon who does extra screening phoned me up a few days layer and said he thought I had a fracture and called me in.
  
  It’s a bit like with any risk related activity. We need to find the best risk/cost point. That is not going to be risk free.
  
  For example, we could bring road deaths to zero, overnight, by enacting a bunch of measures. However that would reduce the utility of the roads. For example: we could reduce all road maximum speeds to 20kph, only allow cars newer than 12 months old and require people to redo their driver’s test every 2 years and lock up any drink drivers for 5 years.

GP crisis in the UK, too …

London’s The Telegraph reports an epidemic of suicides and breakdowns among UK medics, with one doctor dying by suicide every three weeks, according to the charity Doctors in Distress. More than 2,000 GPs seek help for anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses every year.

NZ doctors are under heavy pressure. We’re short of GP’s and specialists, and in many fields NZ health employers are finding it difficult, often to the point of near-impossible, to attract overseas doctors to this country.

Hooray for National’s third medical school plan, and hip-hooray for the idea of tying in doctors for NZ service upon graduation. Some will settle and stay in regions where they are most needed.

Generations of politicians have until now let our health system slide into crisis, with mysteries lilke Labour’s missing $1.9 billion for mental health. In one of the worst-hit sectors, mental hospitals are jam-packed and severely short of nurses and psychiatrists.

The Coalition had better deliver on Health. And the answer isn’t some version of “Gumboot Friday” for GPs. It’s supplying more doctors.

The cartel of State-owned news media and the two State-subsidised media chains let the country down by not highlighting the severity of the developing crisis.

The Telegraph report says patient numbers have doubled for some UK doctors, thanks to an increase in the population and a fall in the number of fully qualified GPs. Many talk about working 12- or 14-hour days and because of this fear they are so unable to provide a sufficiently good standard of care.

  The bonding is important. I was at the ED a few months ago. Had a young woman come in and introduce herself as a trainee and would I allow her to examine me, we got to talking. Her plan was to work in NZ for a year then move to Aussie.
