I’m pleased to see that the Local government ammendment bill has been passed. This means that referendums have been restored for citizens to decide whether they actually want a Maori ward.

The previous government abolished the referendums in their scheme to lift up all things Maori and give Maori more rights than everybody else. Act has driven this new legislation and should be commended for it. However I note that Chris Luxon has allowed this to happen.

So Maori wards will be voted on at the local body elections next year. 3 waters has gone, Maori health authority has gone, Maori wards are likely to go.

Our country is being improved step by step. One nation with the same rights and responsibilities for all.

  The existing Maori wards will remain until the next election.
  
  Assuming the referendum on the ward says no, the existing Maori ward will remain until the end of that NEXT term.

  Scott I received an email from PM Luxon overnight touting the tax cuts.
  
  I have replied saying the next important legislation is the Treaty Principles Bill which he and NZFirst should support through the entire Parliamentary process.
  
  In fact I pointed out this is probably the most important legislation in this Parliamentary term.

    The Māori wards don’t give anyone an extra vote.
    Māori voters on the Māori roll would vote for a Māori ward councillor instead of a general ward councillor.
    What I want to know is why we are not having referendums on the whole ward systems?
    As it stands I only have a vote for who represents this area around here and it was a fait accompli with the two Labour candidates winning by a mile

      There point is Māori have two branches of becoming a trougher, the common old general role, or they then get a second bite and can go in the Māori seat, the two vote thing was a figure of speech, but right from the beginning before act or the campaign began Nats were saying there would be no Māori seats that were simply invented by councils

        I think it has to do with number of electors per councillor as pdm says. Its feasible that there might only be 5 people on the maori roll for the maori ward and they would then have a councillor at the table whereas everyone else might be one of 30,000 for each ward councillor that gets elected. Hardly fair.

  Scott, there is now more Maori heard and seen than has ever been the case. Signs still appear with Maori in bold letters and English squeezed in small writing. The te reo greetings appear in most emails from power, internet providers, lawyers and banks. The one exception is IRD because confusion must not enter your tax business.

  Scott – good progress I agree, but so far just scratching the surface on righting NZ’s messed up race relations.
  
  Until we get all racist laws abolished, including idiotic fables such as Te Mana O Te Wai, then the country still has a significant problem.
  
  I note that Luxon is still saying they won’t back Seymour’s Treaty Bill despite the details not yet being released. (So he disagrees with something that he has yet to see the details – what a Dickhead!)
  
  Maybe Seymour will turn them around – lets hope so for the future of NZ. If the Treaty Gravey Train continues we will not succeed as a country.

    I know I have said this before… Regulating water quality is a task performed by regulators in every developed country. At some point the clever folk at the OECD would have figured out who does it well. So find out and replicate it in New Zealand. Basing water regulation on dozens of bespoke Maori belief systems about water seems, well crazy, there is no polite way to put it. Indeed if someone had suggested this even 10 years ago, they would have been dismissed out of hand.
    
    This is what scares me about te ao Maori and associated “Maori Science”. It is the mission creep. How long before Air New Zealand pilots and surgeons are required to apply a “Maori world view”? Are you really going to tell me that could never happen?

A few days ago, the research team at the Taxpayers’ Union were sent the details on how the rules are playing it out in …Otago.
… under the council’s definition of Te Mana o Te Wai, water from one river can’t mix with water from another. – Peter Williams [1]

Council is committed to providing cost effective, high quality and reliable water supply to the residents of Upper Hutt, as well as working with our community to reduce the volume of water that is used.
Our water comes from three sources; the Hutt River, the combined flow of the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo rivers, and the Waiwhetu Aquifer–a natural underground reservoir that’s fed by river-water filtered through the ground. [2]

How many million – yea, billions? – could this add to already screwed Wellington water users and ratepayers

If David Seymour added to his yet unseen constitutional rights and responsibilities legislation, just six words –
■ NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT SHALL BE SECULAR
– it would knock all this stuff on the head – or blow it out of the water!

    On a related issue, I heard the head of the climate change commission on the radio this morning. Apparently in the last few years, New Zealand emissions have marginally declined. However this decline was due to “factors outside government control”. I’m guessing factors like cars becoming more fuel efficient.
    
    As for Air New Zealand, they deserve points for abandoning their emissions target now rather than lying 🤥 for another few years, which is effectively what the New Zealand government is doing.
    
    Yes, small electric powered airplanes are a reality.

      – mining rare earths
      – mining iron ore
      – manufacturing electric planes
      – mining coal
      – burning coal to generate electricity

        Not to mention the whole thing is a colossal and extremely dangerous fool’s errand.
        
        Numerous top level physicists (including Nobel Laureate John F. Clauser) have independently calculated the ECS at around 1C or less. That means that with each DOUBLING of the amount of Co2 in the atmosphere there will be around 1C or less of increased average global temperature. Bottom line is that means Co2 doesn’t drive the climate to any significant degree and wasting precious trillions of dollars trying to change the climate by reducing HUMAN Co2 emissions is pointless and dangerous to human flourishing (especially so to the poor and developing nations). I’d say a lot of career climate grifters know this and are engaged in closing their eyes to the suffering these policies will inflict on the the poor so they can have a shiny job for life pushing this shit. As one climate alarm sceptic recently observed, a lot of alarmist propaganda starts with a fact but then a lot of twisting goes forth from there.

  I am eagerly waiting to see trials of an electric plane or planes that can carry 10 let alone 200 people. I suspect it will be a very long wait – mind you, I didn’t think any kind of passenger carrying electric plane was possible given the current state of battery technology, and apparently there is one – which can carry perhaps two people.

      pdm: Yes…Bene Yu has helpfully linked to a company which has an electric plane which can carry two…As Bene had already noted, I can’t see one which carries 200 people arriving any time soon. And electric planes will always be propellor driven, and thus slow – until someone comes up with a jet engine which runs on electricity.

        Bene: American English mate…not relevant. As WSC famously said “Two people separated by a common language”.
        
        Their usage is very different from ours: for example “mometarily” means FOR a moment in English English e.g. ” He was only allowed to hold the cup momentarily”
        
        In American, it means IN a moment, as in “I am expect Doris to arrive momentarily”.
        
        They also have fingernails-on-a-blackboard usages such as “He got off OF the horse he had ridden all day” and “My Mom is coming to visit WITH me tomorrow”
        
        There are hundreds of similar examples.

        David – my chiding you your incorrect use of the determiner “which” does not rely on American English rules. My “Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage” provides the same guidance. It has been published by Oxford University Press since 1926. 🙂

      Well not really. Electric motors are vastly more efficient than a jet engine. Hypothetically, if technology allowed a plane powered by electric propulsion, it would produce far fewer life cycle emissions, no matter how the electricity were generated.
      
      In any case, it is irrelevant. Electric powered high capacity long haul planes are not happening in the foreseeable future.

So Wellington City Council CEO has announced she is not standing for an extension to her term that ends March 2025. Lovely words of praise from Mayor Tory Whanau.

No mention of her protocols around information sharing with councillors and what they were not allowed to know. No prior consultation with councillors. Official information requests had to be made and the Ombudsman requested to review. That’s not a good look. It got worse.

“McKerrow has frequently cited the information watchdog’s support for the protocols, in correspondence with councillors and The Post.”

Then the Ombudsman had this to say :
However, on Thursday evening Boshier stressed he did not endorse the code — and had written to the council to outline his position.“I have told the council that I have not given my endorsement of the protocol. However, I did provide comments on elements of the draft for the council to consider after receiving a request for advice from the chief executive,” he said in a pro-actively emailed statement.

There should also be some reporting of Ms McKerrow’s oversight of some major cost blowouts. But no, officially crickets.

  It was claimed on Wellington newstalkzb a few weeks ago that Ms Whanau relies on the CEO to tell her approximately what she she needs to know and provides information about issues in docs – of five pages max.

    These powers to mandate treatment using force have been in the equivalent Acts since the Health Act of 1920, and its replacement in 1956.

    It was only COVID that made people aware of these powers. Before 2020, they were “out of sight out of mind”.
    
    Similiarly, people can be mediated by force if they are suffering from a severe mental illness and refuse to take medication voluntarily.

The stabbing deaths of 3 children in Southport UK may prove to be a real turning point. For starters media should report facts without trying to gloss over the facts. The accused was widely described as a 17 yr old boy, he’s well past being a boy, at least a youth or as the BBC finally describes a 17 yr old male would be more apt. I wonder what media are trying to accomplish by sugar coating these murderers or their bacgrounds

    There is a very real problem and the media is trying to cover it up. The problem can’t be fixed until it’s addressed and the media are trying to stop it from being addressed. Those kids can’t be saved because the “17 year old” (note that they say they’re 17 because it gets them better access to assistance – very few of them aren’t in their early 20s) murdered them. We should be focusing at least partially on how to stop the next murders from happening.

This name is incorrect and we would urge people not to speculate on details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing.”

It was then he said he will debate the Democrat Presidential candidate, knowing full well that Biden would probably have to throw in the towel, but Harris not necessarily the candidate. Would I be the only New Zealander who wishes that everybody who crosses Ricardo Menendez-March’s marching path says: ‘You’re not in Mexico now, hombre.’
How did this precious, thin-skinned, unxious little individual get into our Parliament?
And how was it racist?
I heard him on the radio at the weekend talking about ‘shitty’ jobs.
Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’ each of my children, now in their 40s, has a good job.
But the first step they took to get there, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, was to work a ‘shitty’ job.
As a 17 year-old my son went and worked for McDonald’s.
He says it taught him how to work. How to see business. How to treat customers. How to lead staff. As first jobs go it was the best, he said. ‘I learned so much.’
My elder daughter, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, started in a supermarket deli.
Her experience was akin to her brother’s, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’. She managed shifts as a 7th-former.
She works for a large financial services company in Brisbane, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, running her own teams.
Many of her staff are Kiwis, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, who as poor but ambitious for something better Maori and Pacific Island kids started out in ‘shitty’ jobs.
My other daughter started as a checkout chick at 15. Within weeks she was in the office running the money supply.
‘Dad, I counted out $80,000 this afternoon,’ she told me breathlessly as I drove her home.
She is a manager, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, a leader.
She’s been leading people since she was 19. In one job her staff were mainly older than her mother and father; in one instance, one employee was older than her grandmother.
Not bad for kids from a solo parent state house, eh, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’.
The thing is, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, you don’t sound real to me as an advocate for the poor, the needy, and the jobless.
You give me the impression, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, that you see us as a market to be mined for votes. It’s all political to you.
Like the rest of you Greens, not very sincere.
I sometimes watch you and listen to you as you try your best to sound earnest in Parliament, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’.
I am frequently left wondering why you are in New Zealand, Ricardo ‘You’re not in Mexico now’, and why you’re not back in Mexico.

  All anyone cares about is kicking the can down the road so it doesn’t explode on their watch.
  
  Americans struggle with any sort of belt tightening. They talk about hardship, but do so from a flash car costing $1000 a month on a phone costing them $200 a month while sipping a coffee costing them $400 per month.

  My view is that the EU will fail first, bringing with it a massive capital flight from Euros that will only find a home in USD. This will effectively delay the US Ponzi crash somewhat.

  UPDATE: I see some posters are saying the suspect’s parents are from Uganda, which apparently has a very small Muslim population. If so, I stand corrected…but I stand by my point that the greatest threat is not from carefully chosen Muslim immigrants, but from their UK born children.

Ie prevent the creation of echo chamber “Safe Spaces” for crazy. Being forced to daily contend with other viewpoints prevents people from descending into unbalanced nut-jobbery and promotes more harmonious pluralism. There was some scepticism about the value of the recent All Blacks vs Fiji match in San Diego:
well maybe it had a positive effect on the USA womens’ team , and helped them to a Bronze Medal performance.

USA and Canada in the medal playoffs: who would have picked that ! Look out NZ !

I also note that Kapa-Kingi says “the benefits of Maori wards are obvious” but doesn’t deign to list even a single one. Maybe in fact she can’t.

Hipkins continues his ignominious slide into irrelevancy too I see – if that man truthfully cannot see a difference between race-based wards versus geographical wards then he really has lost it. Although I suspect he can see the difference, but is just trying to mislead New Zealanders in order to score political points. This M.O. being standard operating procedure for the NZ left.

Yet not a word uttered about the Greens, Maori Party, or the majority of Labour MPs,
who always arrive in The House attired like SLOBS!!
