  If The Donald wins which I suspect he will IMHO his foreign policy will in part be as follows.
  
  1. He will tell Putin and Zelensky that Putin can keep the terrority he has already won on the condition he withdraws and forgets about his Russian Empire dream. If Putin doesnt accept the US will ramp up the action. Putin wants an end he is bleeding hence the North Korean troops plus his people will be getting restless with the worsening economic conditions. If Zelensky doesnt agree US will withdraw all its support.
  
  2. The ME. The Donald will tell Iran either it stops funding the terrorist groups and ensures they are dismantled or US will destroy Irans nuke and oil facilities. Again IMHO their citizens especially the young want to see the back of the Mullahs.
  
  3. China. The Donald will tell Xi forget designs on Taiwan or as well as military action to defend it the US will impose huge tariffs. However if China gives up on Taiwan the tariffs will be lower. Xi has a problem with the middle class Chinese. The economy is hurting them and unlike 60 years ago the CCP dont have the same control over the citizens.

    If it does, Ukraine would collapse, and Putin would be emboldened to attack one of the Baltic states.
    
    All of the Baltic states are members of NATO, and an attack on them is an attack on the whole of NATO.

      Your argument doesn’t hold up to reality. Why would Putin attack any NATO country? Nothing to gain. And he knows he can not win a proper war against NATO and that it risks a nuclear strike. He has been fighting Ukraine for almost 3 years and is showing just how hard conquering any country in modern warfare is. So again, your argument that Putin is planning to invade a NATO country makes no sense – he isn’t going to do it.

    There is no way China can take Taiwan unless the USA agrees to allow it, its not something the USA needs to worry about so why would they give anything up for it?
    
    Its 200kms to Taiwan from a decent sized port. So a full day for troop ships to cross the water. What would one Virgina Class sub do to those boats? and USA has 20 odd of that class of sub…
    
    Think about what happens if the USA sent a few cruise missiles to the Three Gorges Dam…..

  The US does not have a senior civil service like in the UK and NZ.
  The US President has power to gift 5,000 appointments in his incoming administration. It is not surprising at least 300 will be replaced as part of the transition.
  Last time Trump was elected he did not have a plan for the transition and was left with thousands of what were called “Obama holdovers” who undermined his administration.

  I would not characterise Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s views as extreme. Unfortunately such views are common. What is not common is that a person with such views has the prospect of obtaining power. He is the biggest downside of a prospective Trump administration.

    I never thought much of him myself mainly because he is a Kennedy. However, I am reasonably well read in the corruption of science and government regulation by the pharmaceutical industry because of my interest both in epistemology (I am a critical rationalist or Popperian) and public policy (Austrian School).
    
    However, I read RFK jnr’s book on Fauci and was very impressed. He’s a smart and studied man, way more than my casual interest.
    
    He’s also correct about food supply (for completeness, Weston A Price’s work on nutrition is the best we have).
    
    I don’t know much about the CIA and FBI but they have not covered themselves in glory over the Trump years. It will be a great plus to open the books.
    
    RFK jnr is a big bonus for me, not least because we may get transparency and accountability for the covid years.

        Kennedy is a mature man who has been involved in politics all his life. He has a considerable life/political experience independent of other members of his family.
        The previous prime ministers child is simply that.

        DG, pattern recognition both keeps us safe and unfortunately causes prejudice. It’s entirely logical to think for example the Cheney family are war mongers who will support the party most likely to make sales for Halliburton.
        If one of the family provides evidence they are not, you then have to challenges your conceptions about the pattern or give in to prejudice.

What the article does not touch on is the membership of an Indian Nation, or applying it here: the membership of Iwi Maori –

Kirk Francis grew up in Maine, and like his Penobscot people, has deep ties to the river and land of his local area. “Our connection to land is everything for the tribe. My tribe is a riverine people. … “It’s been determined that this is not a race-based relationship, it’s really a political distinction between the First Peoples and the United States.
… Francis said: “I’m not an expert in this, the treaty situation here, but I think anytime somebody wants to clarify something, it never really works out very well for the indigenous people, right?
“Because typically those are efforts to minimise the impact on people outside. I’m sure a lot of people on both sides will be weighing in on those issues. But (…) it’s a scary conversation.”

Will New Zealand ever solve such a problem as “inclusion”, what constitutes (pun accepted) a separate Iwi Nation, and how members are identified, or identify themselves, when there is no formal basis to any discussion, because media is falling apart and state television, for example, has no programme like COMPASS, GALLERY or any other current affairs flagship to even justify a Government having a public broadcaster?

Is any discussion on the Constitutional place of the Treaty of Waitangi going to wallow in the media void, as did Jacinda Ardern’s national “conversation” on Capital Gains Tax, and its demise under her so-called Government’s stewardship?

      First full game of league I’ve watched in a long life, and it was magnificent right up until the end. Great playing and spirit by both teams.
      
      What I’ve been missing: the play in league is so open and continuous. The tackling is heavy but the physical damage can’t be worse than from the pile-ups in rugby union’s rucks.
      
      The two professional soccer clubs have a tough task winning New Zealanders over from the rugby codes.
      
      Woke media and TVNZ have made gains converting us from the noun “soccer,” a use we shared with Americans, to “football”.
      
      However, NZ soccer/football publicists overdid things yesterday by hinting there might be “inter-club” violence as the two teams met.
      
      This contrasted with news clips showing very mild supporters.
      
      Did I really hear a TV reporter say of them: “there have been no reports of violence”?

    I spent part of yesterday reading posts from people who thought the universe was less than 10,000 years old and there was science to support that view.
    
    Just for clarity I don’t spend time debating YEC as I treat them the same as flat earthers. There is no science I can show them that will alter their religious viewpoint.
    
    At least there are flat earthers who are not explicitly christian but I have to see a YEC who was not already christian.
    That may point to their religion being a major factor in why they believe what they believe?

Browsing Kiwiblog, as I do daily. Especially General Debate. Having done so for the last 12+ years.
On a number of occasions, I am educated and enlightened by reasoned and educated responses.

However….
I wondered what “”a man from Mars”” might think about New Zealanders if this is a sample of NZ thinking.

Will it be rational, considered debate on the subjects of the day?

Maybe not.

From the 37 odd regular commenters posts, it would seem

1. That New Zealanders don’t like Māoris’ or Pacific Islanders’ Think they are lazy or bludgers.
2. That the continued massacre of Palestinians by Israel is justified.
3. That Only the Russians’ commit war crimes and Ukrainians don’t
4. Think that Main Stream media is corrupt or Biased EXCEPT, when they want to quote a journalist’s article that supports their point of View.

For the subjects of the day.
I am fortunate enough to have the time and inclination to drill down, behind claims, and try not to be emotionally involved and knee-jerk an opinion.

Hence, my points, which tend to generate the crap that gets thrown at me by those emotionally engaged in the topic.

I expect flack for having the temerity of expressing an opinion, such as Candice Owens, Jordan Peterson, or any other opinionists.

  I don’t come away with those takeaways. Without going through posts in detail I would say
  1. Most don’t want division by race
  2. A chunk of the demographic on here spends a lot of time watching sport
  3. Most of us don’t think it’s ok for blocked to pretend to be women or use women’s facilities
  4. Most commenters think labour is generally full of vacuous spiteful airheads; there’s a split on how weak and woke the Nats are.
  
  (I don’t bother with reading posts on sport or wars anymore, yes the latter is very polarised).

  You are another from the deliberately disingenuous left wing horde of race-baiters and gaslighters who equate a desire for equality and for all citizens to have equal rights and duties with ‘we hate Maori’. Again, it is nothing more than gaslighting. The Labour party is dependent on Maori for political support, hence the Labour party’s utter capitulation to co-governance and now emerging separatism.
  What posters desire is for Maori to turn away from stoking division, and for their leadership to turn away from inflammatory and divisive rhetoric which will tear this country apart, and instead start preaching a hopeful message about unity of all peoples in this land, and a message of the importance of Maori being personally responsible and law-abiding. The crime figures are absolutely damning and most citizens are sick of the way violence and gang culture seems to be tolerated rather than condemned.

  I disagree, Ra. I think KBloggers dislike the institutional bias in favour of these two demographics from the State and the media. I see KBloggers celebrating the accomplishments of members of those demographics, especially when such demographic is not cited as the reason for those successes. Shane Reti and various All Blacks spring to mind. 
  
  Where I would agree with you is that lazy commenting produces broad brush strokes – consider the relationship between gangs and Maori, or social housing etc. There’s a difference between a statistically significant percentage of Maori and all Maori. Partly that’s due to the nature of blogging, especially from tapping away into a phone. But, it is incumbent on KBloggers to be more precise when posting – proofreading is our friend!

    I work with Maori people who are very hard working, decent New Zealanders. They choose to be judged by the quality of their work and the quality of their character, and they are judged accordingly. If judging another human being according to their individual qualities rather than their ethnicity makes me a racist, then that is indicative of the upside down world the left have created. Unfortunately the media only promote the awful angry race-baiters and troughers, like Waititi, Tamihere, Packer, Tuku Morgan, Kiri Allan and other such worthless charlatans. There are so many thoroughly decent and responsible Maori in this country who we never see on our TV screens, all we are allowed to see is what the activists in the MSM permit us to.

        My father has often pointed out how well Maori people do in Australia, how successful and well off they are. And why? Because they are free of the grievance mentality in Australia, where they are just people like everyone else. The grievance mentality is a terrible burden, and unfortunately the purported ‘leaders of Maoridom’ here in New Zealand are embracing it every more tightly, the ridiculous unhinged cries of ‘genocide’ are becoming louder and more strident.     Agreed. Many years back, I remember a WTF moment when watching an advert for TV3 news. The two presenters, think it was McRoberts and Hayes, said something along the lines that their job was not to report the news and facts but to go beyond that and tell you what they thought. It was presented in that rather sanctimonious, smug and condescending manner that these things tend to be shot in – wise sage, passing down wisdom etc, but for me it showed everything that was wrong with the media and news. It is not their job to tell me what to think – it is not their job to tell me their version of events. They should report the facts. If they want to venture into opinions, and they are absolutely free to do so, they should be doing this in the opinion sections of newspapers, clearly labelling this as an opinion. Report the facts – I will form my own views and opinions from then on. We see this constantly now with the media – is it any wonder there is so little trust in them as an institution?

  My pragmatic take is that Trump faces a number of headwinds to winning on Tuesday.
  
  If we take the 2020 voter turnout as our starting point and then see where that vote is likely to go in 2024:
  1) Harris has re-energised the Democrat voter base, and I have to assume that 2020 Biden voters will largely turn out for Harris.
  2) The core MAGA vote is still there and they will turn out for Trump. They’re about 30% of the electorate.
  3) But Trump needs to retain the soft end of the GOP vote. The later primaries had 20-25% voting for Haley, even after Haley pulled out. That’s an anti-Trump GOP protest based on things like January 6th. He’s not going to get all that vote back and some of it is lost to him.
  3) Then there’s the “Roe-mentum” protest vote against the GOP’s policies on abortion and maternal care. That will take another bit of the soft GOP vote away from Trump.
  4) Demographics are against him. 5% or so of 2020’s voters have died. That age cohort broke towards Trump. Meanwhile 5% of the voter base is new 18-22yo voters who break more towards Harris.
  
  Trump can’t afford to lose 2-3% of the overall voter base to protest and/or demographics. If those voters either stay home or, worse, vote for Harris then she could easily exceed Biden’s electoral college numbers.

  I wouldn’t put leaky homes down just to self-certification. It seemed a lesser contributor. There were several additional contributions including dodgy builders, local councils giving invalid consents and not properly inspecting, reduction in the requirements for treated wood, building properties like it’s the Mediterranean with insufficient experience to cope with the changing styles and make them waterproof, insufficient eaves, cladded exteriors, flat roofs etc etc. Those designs are just plain too risky for NZ and much more prone to water ingress than traditional styles. I do recall conversations with my tradie mates who told me that they were a disaster waiting to happen back in the 90s. Like most disasters a team event.
  
  Ironically, the current regime from councils is incredibly strict (and slow and expensive) and you’re likely to get 3 different inspection results from 3 different inspectors depending on phase of the moon and the inspector.
  
  Some of the way regulations are applied are ludicrous eg when I renovated the house if I wished to put 3 weather board walls around my car port (on a slope) I have to completely rip out the car port and rebuild it to a standard that enables me to park my two tanks (I jest not – the weight that the car port needs to be able to support is enormously more than even the largest vehicles I could own). Never mind that why a minor mod like that should trigger a rebuild is beyond me. Would have cost six figures!
  
  We have swung the pendulum too far. I believe it takes close to 2 years to build a house in NZ on average with the consents processes taking a significant amount of that – that’s ludicrous.
  
  FYI I believe the plan is to allow self certification in certain lower risk areas to licensed vendors and not generic self certification.

Listening to RNZ this morning, it was a pleasure to hear Jim Mora’s gentle interviewing style. He had clearly done his research & simply asked his questions and let the interviewee speak.

Compare & contrast with the two women on Saturday morning, who talk over each other and the interviewee. They don’t know as much as they think they do, come with an agenda and don’t seem to be aware how obvious it all is to the listener.

Whisper it quietly, but I found myself missing Kim Hill.

  Yes it’s a massive and unfair problem. IQ is very strongly genetically determined. Separate twins at birth, raise them in different families and by their 20’s-30’s their IQ’s are nearly identical regardless of education etc.
  
  The simple solution is to teach women this realty: A 150 IQ father will increase average IQ of their kids by about 12-15pts. Sperm is cheap, and that’s the difference between being average and being top 15% of population.

TV1 news 100% biased hit job on the Police & Mark Mitchell tonight:

…because they simply deported a bunch of Vietnamese drug dealers instead of wasting time and money on Police, Courts, Legal, Judges, Appeals, Corrections….

According to the patronising nonsensical Benedict Collins, it was very unfair to “let them off on a holiday trip” while prosecuting domestic drug dealers. He wheeled out another juvenile advocate for decriminalising to finish the piece.

  If desired result is to protect our citizens, then deportation will accomplish this at a much lower cost.
  
  If the desired result is to punish the criminals and try to rehabilitate them, then we have to bear the cost of trials, incarceration, etc. In the end they will likely get deported anyway.
  
  It’s not our responsibility to rehabilitate visiting criminals. Let their home country deal with them.

On Mondays and Wednesdays, they are screaming to ban tobacco for under 22 yr olds (it changes every year) and expect the police to enforce the ban.

NZ wins a clean sweep in India!! Un-be-fackin’-lievable! Pitch is turning and bouncing and we outplayed them from the get go. Having played a bit, you have to appreciate the degree of difficulty to win even one test over there in treacherous conditions that most are just not used to. To win 3 on the bounce? One of the best NZ sporting moments ever.
