        Rotorua is a Maori word that means ‘second lake’ which is derived from the original name Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe.

Yep, $20 for maoris and pacific islanders. $30 for everyone else.

Waiting for the media to jump on this and show their disgust for it…..

It’s like they want a civil war and I’m actually starting to think we need one.

    I have had some good news… apparently because of my race, I get to pay less to attend music events organised by a group called Browntown than my non-Māori/Pasifika friends! 🤯🤯🤯
    
    Chris Lynch reports from Christchurch that tickets for a Sunday Session event featuring King Kapisi and others was initially advertised with different tiers for pricing based on race.
    
    “Early bird (for all Tangata): $15, Tangata Moana (for our Māori and Pacific Tangata): $20 and Tangata Tiriti (for our allies): $30.”
    Browntown was founded last year by Devyn Baileh, Grace Colcord, and Shea Wātene (pictured below) and promotes itself as “a platform for cultural engagement aimed at addressing racism”.
    
    Browntown founder and director Grace Colcord (pictured left), allegedly of Malie and Afega descent, was defiant in the face of criticism of their racist ticket pricing. She told Chris Lynch that it was “in line with our kaupapa” and “pricing models based on specific groups aren’t unique to this event. Many venues and organisations offer discounted pricing for children, seniors, students…”
    
    Not quite the same thing, mate.
    
    The group has received $35,000 in funding from Creative New Zealand’s Pacific Arts Fund. Another case of arts funding going to blatant racism.
    
    What Browntown haven’t got is an understanding of the Human Rights Act 1993 and how discrimination works! Or maybe they just don’t care?
    
    A Pasifika Community Leader who didn’t want to be named – probably because he would be harassed for daring to speak out – said:
    
    “This is a blatant attempt to manufacture victimhood, and Creative New Zealand fell for it. Charging higher prices for white people doesn’t foster unity; it drives a wedge between communities.”
    
    I couldn’t agree more. We don’t need this racist crap in New Zealand. What’s next? Separate drinking fountains?
    
    The manager of the bar Muy Muy, where the event is scheduled to be held, was unaware of the discriminatory ticketing and told the organisers to amend the pricing or face cancellation of the event.
    
    “At Muy Muy, we have a great sense of acceptance for all cultures and traditions. We support all communities equally,” Bugz Munasinghe said.
    
    Chris Lynch says that by yesterday afternoon, the wording for the ticket prices had been changed to “early bird, $15.00, Alofa Access Ticket $20.00 and Ally Access Ticket $30.00.”
    
    Not really an improvement.
    
    Peter, you and I both know that if the ticket pricing was arranged the other way, and Māori and Pasifika were expected to pay higher prices, there would be an uproar.
    
    I guarantee you, Chris Lynch wouldn’t be the only brave journalist reporting on it as is the case here. TVNZ would have a reporter stationed outside the bar calling for it to cancel the event. Stuff would have a journalist tracking the three Browntown organisers and writing full exposes on them and their immediate families. The Spinoff would spontaneously combust.
    
    It sickens me that this kind of thing is happening in New Zealand. It isn’t ‘progressive’; It is divisive.
    
    Shout out to Chris Lynch for covering this story. If only we had more journalists like him.

        Especially if there is an online booking system.

      No doubt the “artistic content” of the event is also going to be filled with race-baiting too.
      
      Why would a white person attend and pay $20 – let alone a premium of another $10 – to be abused?

      No improvement at all. Changing “Tangata Moana (for our Māori and Pacific Tangata)” to “Alofa”, and “Tangata Tiriti (for our allies)” to Ally is just semantics, the pricing is still race based.

        They spin it that there are precedents for different levels of ticket prices eg: discounted prices for kids, students, some beneficiaries and superannuitants.
        But, AFSIK, skin colour is not taken into account for these.
        Yet.

  Yes. They’ve now rebranded the racial ticket categories as “Alofa Access Ticket: $20.00 and Ally Access Ticket: $30.00”.
  
  Does this breach any existing law? If so, there needs to be a prosecution, or others will follow suit. At the very least, the taxpayer funding of the organizers (“Browntown”) needs to be cut. The other day, someone on this site rashly pronounced that “woke is dead”. It sure as hell ain’t. We are facing a relentless Maori/Polynesian ethnostate agenda in this country.

  If you make it desirable for the less well off to buy tickets, that is who will buy them. They also spend less on alcohol and merch.

  It’d be interesting to have the assets of some of our more prominent MPs audited as well.. Ardern couldn’t possibly have acquired her suspected wealth (before she left NZ) from her income. Additionally, Willie Jackson’s affairs need looking into too – reputedly the owner of 4 properties. For years he didn’t earn much as a union thug – and his parliamentary income couldn’t have managed it – so where did the necessary capital spring from?

IIRC people who steal from supermarkets like Pak n Save fall into three categories..

Criminal trailer trash.

Folk generally desperate for food and driven to desperation.

Mental illness.

In the current case being reported in the media, surely #3 is the only plausible explanation? If so, I do have sympathy for her, despite me disagreeing with literally every idea she ever expressed.

    All on: Yes…to vary the old joke, “You don’t have to be mentally ill to be a Green MP…but it helps!” A very odd and motley crew…much worse than in my time, when several of them were reasonably sane.
    
    But even then they were distinctly “odd”; never ever mixed with MP’s from other parties, never had dinner or a drink at Bellamys. Of course at least some of that was they thought they were much better than the rest of us.

      Benedict, you may put the Greens in the same category as say Jehovas Witnesses but –
      Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard, but Peter had to wait outside at the door. Somewhere about John 18:15–27.
      I have found if you ask Jehovas Witnesses who was that Other Disciple, they say I will go and speak to an Elder visiting up the street, and they confer a moment and the disperse to bother other people.
      There must be some similar principle (if you can still use that word) which applies to Greens and their religion.

  Bene: Good on you mate…my position on this – presuming she is convicted – is pretty much the same as yours.
  
  It should also be noted that prosecuting shoplifters from supermarkets is extremely rare: if this does come to a prosecution I would think it is only because she has been warned, possibly more than once, and kept doing it. Which of course strengthens the case for some mental illness being the root cause of it.

  I’m a great believer in always having a Plan B for when life turns to custard….

    I don’t watch the news, but have heard Luxon on the radio on more than one occasion state his position. He’s aligned with NZ Firsts position – there are no principles, there is the treaty – just as the former Maori King stated. I think you will see over the coming year any laws referencing principles will be amended to remove the reference. Seymour’s referendum law may give you a sugar rush, but long term it will create issues as activists will now create confusion and misdirection as they will now be banging on about the treaty and the principles law – and overtime the principles concept will become embedded in our constitutional arguments. Leave the treaty as the only source of argument, adding principles to the discussion only muddies the waters ie constant arguments on what the principles are or should be when in fact there are no principles

        Benedict – my understanding is that National and NZ First want to take all mention of the Treaty of Waitangi out of the legislation unless such references are directly relevant. They believe the treaty was an agreement between two peoples and there are no ongoing principles in the Treaty.
        
        For what its worth I agree with their stance and would like references to the Treaty of Waitangi to pass into history where it rightfully belongs.

PTSD, MS. mental health etc are weak excuses. They do not justify behaviour.

Everyone who has lived in South Africa has experienced as much life trauma (and typically more) than GG has. So have real refugees.

Thousands of people have MS and other equally debilitating conditions (pain waiting for hip operations etc etc).

Hundreds of thousands of people in NZ have a host of mental illnesses.

A decreasing number of war veterans experience real PTSD.

Would someone offer “oh, he’s South African” or “oh, he needs a hip operation” or “oh, he’s a refugee” as an excuse?

If we really think that every South African, refugee or person in pain or with mental health issues is going to be a criminal then we’ve got some serious problems in society.

Allegedly, of course.

      Even before Mr. Trump has taken office, a cease fire agreement has been reached in Gaza (lets hope it sticks). If you think this has been reached for any other reason than Mr. Trump coming into power, then you most likely believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden. It has nothing to do with Biden (the same deal was on the table back in May), so you might also argue that Mr. Trump’s eminent return to power, has already saved thousands of lives. And if Mr. Trump was in power at the time, Putin would never have had invaded Ukraine, as Trump would have blocked NATO’s ambitions to bring Ukraine into the fold. No way will Ukraine become a NATO member now and the future looks positive for a cease fire of some sort now too, in that part of the world. All thanks to Trump.

      Putin has lost a trillion dollars to seizures in the west. If the war ends – and ‘special conditions’ relax his oligarchs will likely murder him and his kids. He personally can’t afford a peaceful end to the war.
      
      The war will only end with his death, or complete economic collapse of Russia (which would need vastly more missiles than Ukraine has got).
      
      Ukraine is basically out of troops. I have no idea what happens next. Russian materiel is nearly exhausted and without western boots on ground Ukraine will continue to collapse in Donbas/Zaphoresia at least. Russia has greatly increased tempo in last few months, with ~50% greater losses, so maybe Putin does have a plant to negotiate.
      
      I think the way to end would be for USA to offer Putin sanctuary and a few billions in wealth in the west to live out his life. Perhaps at Camp David in USA.

  It would seem as though the US hasn’t enough leverage yet to bring the opposing parties to the negotiating table and settle the war in Ukraine’s favor.

Should we remove indecent exposure as a crime? I’m generally a libertarian so when a law exists for “I’m offended, stop that!” it bothers me. I don’t think the government has right to what I can and cannot wear. That is one of the reasons I’ve been on the fence with the gang patch ban.

We’re born naked so it’s weird to be so offended by nudity. You’ve even got prudes offended by bikinis and budgy smugglers. As Kiwis we don’t care what someone wears to the beach or pool. I don’t mean to sound racist but these complaints mostly come from immigrants who want to force their ways on us.

And the announcer telling us the percentage of NZ ‘wildfires’ being contained. I’d never heard that usage before the recent Californian fires.
It’s revealing too that RNZ counts only the Palestinian dead, including women and children (who are the rest?), and not Israeli dead. I guess if ever we are attacked RNZ will save all its sympathy for our aggressors and not us.

  I suspect it is a combination of many factors, seed oil consumption being one.
  On top of that add high levels of fructose corn syrup consumption.
  And low exercise.
  And just an over-consumption of food in general.
  
  The average American consumes over 3800 calories a day. That is nearly double what is required for a sedentary man of around 80kg (probably healthy weight for the average American man) about 2200 calories.
  
  Now that 3800 is AVERAGE, not the worst of the worst.
  
  For that 80kg man to lose 0.5kg a week he needs to be eating half that – around 1900 calories.
  
  Oils and fats in general are the highest calorific density of any substance and refined oils are the worst (eg. butter or fatty meat have some water in them). Apart from any particular issues with the oils their calorific density is already a huge problem.
  
  I doubt there is a single magic bullet here.

Add to that bullshit about “pregnant people”. How many people trust an organisation that talks of “pregnant people”? How many young mothers see themselves as a “pregnant person”?

    I am unvaxxed. I got Covid from a fully vaccinate AND fully boosted person (this was after the first Booster). He got it about 2 months after getting the booster. He has had numerous boosters and had Covid twice. I have had it once.
    
    This is not an exception. I work at home most of the time, but in an office with around 16 co-workers. Everyone has had Covid at least once. Some have had it twice, and one three times. The majority of these are fully boosted.
    
    There are two of us who have never been vaccinated, we have had it once.
    
    Other than you I am not aware of a single person who has dodged Covid. Maybe there’s a club you can join?
    
    The lies started long before the boosters were even available. Remember the “just get vaccinated and it all stops right there” bullshit? That got followed by the “get boosted and it will stop right there” bullshit. Now it is get boosted every six months and no promises.
    
    How many times does the boy have to cry wolf?
    
    Now if I was in your position, and had the same concerns about gummed up heart valves, I would probably also get every booster that came along, so I am not at all saying you should make a different choice for yourself.
    
    However, I would hope that I didn’t pursue it with the same religious zeal.
    
    I take statins. There are many people who think they are both dangerous and ineffective. I think that they could be right, but I take them anyway because I think in my case the risk/reward curve makes it worth while. I certain would not encourage that the general population take statins (or any other drugs for that matter) – especially unproven experimental drugs.
    
    As for doing your own research? Pull the other one! That is an extremely unrealistic position.
    
    90% of people are not capable of doing the research. Not even 50% of doctors are.
    
    We rely on experts. We pay the fuckers with our tax $. They lie to us.
    
    Unless you have a strong scientific and statistical training you can’t do effective research either. You are deluding yourself that you are doing research if you just read papers.

  Perhaps many National voters will realise that National is moving left faster than they are. If so, then we could see some Act up-tick in the future. That does not seem to be showing up in the polls (yet).

    I think more and more folk will warm to Seymour when he becomes DPM. Seymour is also a superior orator to Luxon and answers questions concisely, and succinctly. He’s also arguably the smartest politician in parliament and far more experienced than Luxon is.

    I stopped voting for ACT when Seymour came in and pushed legalising Marijuana, killing granny and abortion reform.
    I’d vote for a Conservative party if it wasn’t led by the likes of Capill, Peters or Craig.
    However National are hopeless and only continue to get worse.
    Seymour is generally saying and doing all the right things, McKee on gun reform and van Velden is promising. Unless National pass this bill, I’d see ACT reaching 25%. Either way at the next election its looking like National not winning enough of the centre to stay in government.

      This country has been losing its way over the last two, to three decades, but moreso over the last decade. Seymour of course knows this and has moved to address the matter before the entire country slips into the abyss. I strongly disagree with past, Court interpretations of what the Treaty laid out and delivered to both parties (both then and now), as I do with Luxon’s position on the matter (whatever that might be). Of course, he’s fence sitting, betting on the next generation of voters coming through being sufficiently brainwashed to secure their votes come next election time. My real resentment however, goes back to successive govts of both hues, who have allowed the Courts to usurp its sovereignty. Effectively, this entire country has slept-walked itself into the position it now finds itself in and a ‘she’ll be right mate attitude’, ain’t gonna fix it.

One of the various roles I do is designing computer chips to do specialised processing with high efficiency. This leads me to exploring all sorts of very interesting mechanisms that provide potential improvements.

An area that I recently stumbled upon is the use of Vedic Maths in chip design. Of course this is something going on mainly in India.

This is one of the reasons I really like international cross-pollination of ideas as has been mostly seen in the open source world.

“Vedic Mathematics (Vedic Maths) is a methodology used by ancient Indians for various computations. Vedic Maths was derived from “Vedas” which means the storehouse of knowledge [4]. Vedic Maths is not only a mathematical wonder but it is also logical. It also deals with various branches of mathematics such as algebra, geometry, and, arithmetic. The main feature of Vedic Maths is the coherence. It has sixteen different sutras for various mathematical operations. The application of Vedic sutras reduces computation time in complex operations.
The following are the 16 main sutras of Vedic Maths: Ekadhikena Purvena, Nikhilam
Navatascharamam Dastah, Urdhwa-triyagbhyam, Parvartya Yojet, Sunyam Samyasamuchchaye, Anurupyena, Sankalanavyavkalanabhyam, Puranpuranabhyam, Chalana Kalanabhyam, Yavadunam, Vyastisamastih, Sopantyadyamantyam, Ekanyunena Purven, Gunitasamuchachayah and Gunaksamuchchaya”

These observations have lead to many improvements in chip design in the last 10 years or so.

To me this is an excellent usage of traditional knowledge. It works because the ancient Vedic mathematicians were highly skilled. They had mathematics and a written language. They wrote stuff down, were precise and shared ideas. And now, chip designers are becoming aware of these concepts in a different context – leading to improved chip designs.

The Veda are, essentially, the Indian equivalent of Mātauranga Māori.

However Mātauranga Māori is imprecise and not written down so I suspect we will never see any significant use of Mātauranga Māori in any field of engineering – and certainly not chip design.

Had Maori had a written language and a focus on precise knowledge, “Maori IP” might have a whole lot more relevance than just kapa haka and fern leaf patterns.

  Whilst most recent immigrants to NZ will have had some exposure to English, they are unlikely to be familiar with Maori words carelessly dropped into official notifications.

    Couldn’t agree more, Benedict and Maggy. Our officials seem to prioritise virtue signalling over actually doing their job properly – in some cases (like this), a job where it is actually “incredibly important” to just get the message across and forget about trying to virtue signal.
    
    I can only assume that for these people, trying to do their bit (and being seen to do their bit) for the Maori Language Strategy is more important than actually doing their job.

  Bene: As an aside, the word “pepi” for “baby” is very obviously the Maorification of the English word – Tongan contains many similar examples – such as “Kilisimisi” for “Christmas” and “famili” for nuclear family. (Like the Maori, their main family unit is the extended family.)
  
  What is interesting though, is that Maori had no word for baby, only ones for children “tamariki”, and young people “rangitahi”. I suspect the reason is that so few “pepis” survived the first year – for whatever reason – that they didn’t think they needed a word for babies or infants. I am not sure about Maori, but a childs first birthday is still a very big thing in Tonga, even though infant mortality is of course much less than hitherto.
  
  If anyone with a great linguistic knowledge can suggest another explanation I would love to hear it.

    Pēpi doesn’t appear in Harry Orsman’s Dictionary of NZ English.
    
    Harry collected a list of Maori words (original te Reo and loan words) that had been used commonly (and even rarely) in NZ Literature, official publications and casual speech between 1770s and 1995.
    
    The te reo word for an infant is kõhungahunga.

        DG: To say the language commission “invented” it is maybe a bit harsh.
        
        The use of borrow words is common amongst languages and are frequently used to convey new ideas that are encountered (eg. Europeans adopting kumara in NZ).
        
        As you suggest earlier, the distinction of “baby” (vs infant or child) and was probably not a useful concept historically, mainly because of high infant mortality. I am not aware of a Zulu word for baby, but the borrow word of bebe got used where that was needed (eg. a maid talking to the white mistress of the house about a baby).
        
        Sometimes the borrow words are very regional. For example, the Zulus’ first significant contact with Europeans happened with different groups in different areas (Portuguese, Dutch and English) and the regional borrow words can vary according to where they encountered the concept first.
        
        Sometimes words also get replaced. Many of the words in Afrikaans (itself a very young language) have been replaced with borrow words from English. Since people use the internet etc extensively they often become more used to the English word than the Afrikaans word and soon the Afrikaans word drops out of favour. After long enough (eg the 30 years I have been away from South Africa), nobody remembers the old words any more.
        
        I guess the same happens to us as we Americanise or spelling, vocabulary and grammar.

  pēpi sounds like a borrow-word translation from “baby”. That suggests to me that there was no word for “baby” before whitey came along.
  But then Haiwiian for baby is also “pepe” (ie the same) too, so maybe this got borrowed much earlier?
  
  Some languages such as Zulu do not have words to distinguish between baby and child. Maybe Polynesian/Maori was like that and only adopted baby later on.

  I know about this drone stuff – different in the US. In Anchorage I decided to fly from the side lawn of the hotel we were at. “Do I have permission?” click yes. Gut up and over 16 stories and there is Ted Stevens International Airport! I did not know we were that close. Landed immediately.
  Had a lot of trouble with orientation in Alaska. Second trip I worked it out. The sun is in the wrong place. Sure it rises in the east and sets in the west but the sun travels across the southern sky. Here in NZ is goes across the northern sky.

  Traditional schooling was designed as a mass-education system. The best methodology available in the 1800s – given the resources, technology and thinking of the time.
  
  This was an age before the telegraph, let alone anything else.
  
  It is really quite amazing that the same basic methods are with us today.
  
  Anyone who has homeschooled will tell you that you can get more done in an hour of homeschooling than most schools can accomplish in a day.
  
  That computer aided Ai-based systems can outperform 1800s methods is somewhat unsurprising. Indeed, it would be surprising if that was not the case.

Just in the last month I’ve seen articles on kids playground equipment being stolen, kohanga reo being raided at night, a public gardening charity being looted of all their tools and equipment, copper being stolen off church roofs – the list just goes on and on.

We bend over backwards in this country to give people opportunities, to educate them, to provide housing and cash to live and funding in emergencies.

There is just no legitimate excuse for looting and pillaging of this kind. Any kind.

We need to come down on this stuff hard. Much harder than we’re now doing.

Instead of thousands and thousands of new and shiny bureaucrats between 2017-23, I’d much rather have seen a few thousand more well-paid cops, coupled with harsher sentencing for these offences against our whole society.

Without serious corrective action this will only get worse and worse – as I’ve witnessed these last 40-50 years.

This sort of thing was just unheard of when I was a kid.

  Cheap prices for maori is just a natural extension of maori wards, preferential maori treatment under the principles of the treaty of waitangi.
  
  Maori will become bolder and bolder and expect more and more as they progressively win greater rights than the rest of us.
