  The TPM march massively swayed the racist vote. Many racists apparently signed up for the Maori roll.

    Hipkins is AWOL and the rest are empty suits.

      Only a few % is a huge shift when they are already only a few %.
      
      Remember that every TPM supporter is a rabid racist. It does not take many like that to cause huge problems in the country as a whole.
      
      I seriously doubt they will be happy to try to achieve their goals through the ballot box. The numbers just don’t work for that.

    The new support seems to be a mix of media hype and also the expectation of a payday of some sort.

    In the last 6 polls they have ranged from 28.5 to 37 with no trend, although overall they do have a downward trend without much of an upward trend in NZF or ACT which is a bit concerning. Labour are overall trending up, but greens are trending down.

Immunisation for babies is free.

How is it that this mother, or her partner, or their whanau, or their iwi couldn’t have jumped in the car and gone to the local medical centre, or another medical centre, or nearest hospital, to get the jab?

If these people have a car that they used for another purpose, then the pepe’s death is on them. If they don’t have a car, how is it that they think they’re equipped to bring a child into the world?

I’m sorry for them, and sorrier for the baby, but am hacked off with being blamed for other people’s bad decisions.

  My further understanding in the last few years Dr Shane Reti has given is time during Parliamentary recesses (and there seem to be plenty of those) driving to outlying areas in Northland to do such vaccinations.

  How is it that with the likes of Te Puni Kokiri, Min of Maori Affairs, a Minister for Maori, Te Whatu Ora, the likes of Waiparera Trust, the millions if not billions of dollars provided specifically to Maori, all manner of other Maori agencies etc and decades of it all that anyone from maoridom can say the system is failing Maori. It must be that Maori are failing themselves or their own people. With all the above support, how could any Maori parent not know what medical services are available for their child.

    Those prisoners in Israel’s jails will have been treated at least adequately. I don’t suppose annual cost per is anything like New Zealand’s but still serious savings if many are released.
    
    They should be in reasonable health to get stuck into helping clear Gaza rubble. Chances of re-entering Israel must be low as they will be easily identified by smart systems.

  There will never be peace in the ME. There is too much hatred of the Jews. There is also much hatred in the West including in NZ. As regards the ME this is religious but in the West it is envy.
  The Jews are the most successful people where ever they settle. If I was in charge I would welcome as many Jews as wanted to settled in NZ and I would pass the strictest antsemitism laws that saw those from overseas deported and NZ citizens incarcerated for a very long time.

  No – it means that we did not dumb down the curriculum enough to cater for the “modern learners”.
  
  From memory, a few years ago NZQA introduced a number of Driver Licensing unit standards for NCEA Level 1, in order to make Level 1 more achievable for some. Perhaps we now need to introduce “I do not soil my pants” as new Level 1 standards to increase the pass rates.

    “You need 80 credits to achieve an NCEA certificate at each level: 60 credits at that level or above, plus 10 Literacy or Te Reo Matatini credits and 10 Numeracy or Te Pāngarau credits.
    
    You only need to meet the 20-credit Literacy and Numeracy or Te Reo Matatini and Te Pāngarau requirement once. After you’ve met the requirement, it counts for every level of NCEA.”

        One, the Palestinians convert from Islam and lay down their arms and seek prosperous cooperation.

Should tikanga, which silences three of the nations leaders, be considered as the Supreme Court has done, as an addition to New Zealand law, and now a compulsory course for 1st year law students?
Which leads to a second question: Has tikanga, which similarly silences the Maori Queen for a year after her father’s death, been adjusted in any way since 1840, as the Treaty hasn’t either.
The American Constitution has 27 amendments, and apparently rulings, like it does not cover abortion rights –
the Treaty: no amendments.

Not even to confirm there are no Principles, or that there are (apparently) – and detail them.
And why would law students study thinking that stopped 184 years ago, if that is the case?
Or deny common courtesy to the nations leaders, or multi-million decisions rest on “legal” thinking with the same technological gap, nearing two centuries?
Or has tikanga evolved with Article 2 sovereignty of practised taonga, but seemingly without any well-publicised documentation?

  That’s a very good point, why aren’t there any amendments to our constitutional founding document, the ToW. Brilliant. BTW, constitutional document is other people’s words, not mine.
  
  Tikanga can apply to maori when on their land, in their home, under the rule of their chief or tribe until the cows come home. Knock yourself out. Fill your boots. But how you get from that to courts elevating it outside the above and somehow finding that it says that in the ToW I can’t fathom. They’re in fairyland.

Whooping cough death highlights failures in healthcare system – Maori paediatrician

There does seem to be a systemic issue with various too low immunisation rates, but not necessarily with ‘the system’. Question – did the parents know about immunisation or not. If yes, seems there was some level of decision not to do it, good reason or not. If no, did the medical oversight of a pregnancy, birth and afterwards fail to mention it.

I would hope that experts consulted by media in the current sad death are not using it to score points wrt the public health role cuts proposal.

Before the whooping cough vax some littlies were taken up in a plane to hopefully relieve symptoms. That gives a clue to how distressing symptoms are.

  I had whooping cough when I was a child (1960s) which gave me some immunity later on when my family got it in about 2008. Two teenagers and a missus with a cough that went on for weeks.
  
  That would suggest that whooping cough vaccines are one of the “real” vaccines that actually work well with a long lifetime. Being a bacterial vaccine one might expect that.
  
  Thanks to the lies from “the system” in the last few years it is not surprising that people don’t go out of their way to get jabs.
  
  Has the system as a whole failed? Well the system is there to provide whooping cough vaccinations for those that want it. However “the system” undermined the value of the vaccines they provide by conflating them with the Covid vaccine and flu vaccines – and continuing to do so.
  
  That was a very stupid thing to do. Many warned this would backfire – including myself.
  
  Cindy, Baker and friends seem oblivious to the harm they caused by not being honest.

      “The system” is providing misinformation, from which the “pregnant person” must decide what they are bothered to do for their unborn child or baby.
      
      Since over 40% of Maori mothers drink during pregnancy and about the same % smoke, it would seem very unlikely that they are going to go out of their way to consider the forthcoming baby’s best interests.
      
      If you continue to smoke and drink, chances are you’re not going to stand in line for a jab to help the baby either.
      
      If the doctor in the article had a shred of integrity he would shine a light on where the main problems are.

      – or the vaccination decline: 1st covid injection to 2nd, to booster, to anything since?
      
      Does this indicate poor education with the extension of vaccine ‘technology’ in covid injections (and God knows, they used enough tv ads to have devoted a few to more explicit education)

    My niece has had no vaccinations. A few years ago ago her entire high school class got whooping cough. 25 kids. She was the only one who did not get it.
    
    Her parents were not vaccinated for it either as it wasn’t offered when they were babies.
    
    So does it work? Well it possibly makes some difference based on my small sample but not sure it’s going in the right direction.

        Seymour has tried similar strategies in the past. I remember when he tried to get Green voters to switch to Act. Even deleting Act’s climate change policy from their website. Seymour and Luxon are similar. The big difference is after enough time Seymour found key issues not being addressed. Luxon doesn’t have that luxury.

    Non-member voters are far more likely to switch .
    Membership shows a commitment that means people will need significant reasons to shift allegiances.

        Incredibly, the UK has more. Some 0.8 percent of the UK population are bureaucrats.
        
        So how do we compare? Well, with nearly 63,000 taxpayer funded bureaucrats (even after Nicola Willis’ so-called ‘cuts’) that’s some 1.18 percent of the population.
        
        That’s right, on a per-person basis, New Zealand employs twice as many bureaucrats as Communist China.
        
        It’s been well-known that the cuts to the size of the public sector were mainly illusory with vacant positions being disestablished and counted in the total.
        
        Someone should ask Luxon and Willis why China-a communist state–has half the public servants as NZ and watch them defend the NZ public sector. While they’re at it they need to ask Seymour–as Minister of Regulation–the same bloody question.

  Wishful thinking by Trotter. Luxon isn’t a conviction politician: remember how he slapped down Simon O’Connor for making a strong “pro-life” statement on Twitter, despite his own anti-abortion views. Luxon just represents the views of the dominant liberal wing of the Nats and their major backers. So I doubt replacing Luxon with any of the other front-bench options would change the party’s position regarding the Treaty Principles bill.

  The problem is there are three groupings of voters…
  
  a) I always vote for party x regardless
  b) Informed and politically active voters
  c) Uninformed voters
  
  Over 50% of NZ voters are in category a. I make this comment based on Nationals ‘core’ base being in the low 20% range and Labours core base being in the 28-32% range.
  
  I suspect of the remaing categories, uninformed voters outway informed voters. So if b and c make up 45% of the voting base, probably greater then 60% are made up of uninformed voters. That estimate means that only about 18% of voters are informed and capable of voting for alternative parties.
  
  This is a very round about way of saying, Luxon may not care what people think. Only ~18% of voters will move based on policy and a good portion of that 18% may agree with Luxon. Those that dont might still vote National for other reasons even if they disagree on the treaty principles bill.
  
  This is the only thing I can see that explains why National hasn’t taken a hit in the polls.
  
  I hope with time the informed swing away from National as it is clearly the only way they will get the message with regards to this bill. Unfortunately at the moment Luxon is rightly confident his position is a winner.
  
  Note: I am not saying I want a left wing government, but it is clear that a poll shift away from National is the only thing that will move them on this.

    Govt size reduced (yah) but to only what it was a few months before the election.
    Maori titles and wording still all over all govt departments a year after promising to tone it down.
    More borrowing then labour.

    Race relations minister refuses to comment on racially segregated event with pricing based on race.

Methane is supposed to be NZ’s biggest climate change problem. But try finding out how much the country produces and you will have a headache. You would think it would be easy to find a total tonnes number seeing we are prepared to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayers and industry money on reducing it.

Here is a challenge. Can anyone find the total tonnes of methane emissions in NZ? I am offering a substantial prize to who ever gets it right and can show a sound reference.

    That information is a load of toss, put out by people whose jobs depend on creating narratives that keep them employed.
    
    A simple rule of physics is that if you cannot isolate a space, and control what goes into it and what goes out of it, measuring it is nigh on impossible.
    
    It would be like to trying to estimate how many blow flies or white tail spiders are in existence in NZ at any one point in time.
    
    If said researchers came out and said “climate change is caused by the sun”, or “the biggest greenhouse gas is water vapour, and that is controlled by the sun”, they would not have a job next week.
    
    Likewise if Michael Baker came out and told the truth, and said Covid was a con, as were the vaccines, people will demand to know what happened to the $90,000,000,000 that Labour printed or borrowed to eliminate it.

  You will quite often encounter a measurement in terms of equivalent CO2 emissions too (often abbreviated to eCO2), so be careful which numbers you are dealing with.
  
  The molar mass for methane is around 16g/mol. For CO2 it is 44g/mol.
  Due to the concern that methane has a much higher green house gas potential than CO2, each mol of methane counts as approximately 7 mol of CO2.

    Yes, some things are correct but can be misleading.
    How can burning 1 kg of wood result in emitting 4 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere?
    It is because the oxygen part of CO2 comes from the air so 32/44 (72%) of CO2 is actually already in the atmosphere.
    12/44 comes from the wood.
    
    I am surprised eco protestors (especially those who didn’t go to school) are not freaking out that burning fossil fuels is removing oxygen from the atmosphere.

  To accurately measure it you would need to put a major beaker over NZ and separate beakers over people, animals, and plants. And a another beaker over the ocean.
  
  With issues like these anything reported as fact, will be ±8000%. It’s a thumb suck.
  
  They still haven’t figured what % of 02 comes from where. The estimate of how much 02 comes from the land, and how much comes from Plankton in the sea is vague.
  
  Estimates of 02 from the sea vary between 50% and 80%, and even that is a guess. Without a giant beaker over the land or the sea, it’s a guess.
  
  And now the discovery in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone, that 02 is being generated 12,000 feet below the sea surface, at the bottom of the ocean, skews those figures even more.

This Maori paediatrician says that ethnicity is a factor in the whooping cough outbreak. Possibly he is right.

The whole article is written in English but mainly talks of tamariki and pēpi.

Whew, it looks like this is a non-issue for Europeans and they don’t need to worry about this.

  EDIT Sometimes there is racism in societies. However I just refuse to believe that Maori babies are not being vaccinated because of racism. All health authorities fall over each other to get babies vaccinated. Every doctors surgery has posters and phone numbers. Thanks to Whanau Ora there are hundreds of Maori health providers and nurses.

      I think it depends which end of the telescope you are looking in to.
      
      You only have to look at the strength of the Maori roll and TPM to see that Maori race baiting seems to be working very well and is probably stronger than it has ever been.
      
      Here we have a professional, a doctor, winding it up too.
      
      Quite likely the race baiting is less effective in the main stream media except to keep pumping white guilt in lefties. I expect the main platforms for Maori race baiting are Tiktok etc.

    We actually have an excellent children’s dental care system . Yet the primary cause of childhood hospitalisation ( at one time anyway if not still ) is dental rot and primarily Maoris.

    …..and Capts Cook and Hobson cannot be blamed for that and yet ……..

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

“A whooping cough death caused by “systemic failures in the healthcare system, a leading Māori paediatrician says.”

“Health New Zealand confirmed on Thursday that an infant died over the Christmas period after contracting pertussis (commonly known as whooping cough), which is highly contagious and can cause serious harm to babies.

It is the first death since an epidemic was declared in November, after cases spiked to levels not seen since 2018.

“Rather unsurprisingly it was a Māori baby, who lived in a rural area, and where it was difficult to access healthcare,” paediatrician Dr Owen Sinclair (Te Rarawa), who is chair of the National Immunisation Taskforce, said.”

I’d really like to know exactly what information Dr Sinclair bases his conclusions on that this was purely the fault of systemic failures in our health system.

There is nothing in the piece that indicates he has any specific knowledge about this mother or child’s individual circumstances or history, other than that they lived in a rural area. He may have, but you just can’t tell.

But anyway, back to his claim. I’d be very interested to know, for example, what other and how many pregnancies there have been in that same rural area over say the last five or ten years and to what degree those pregnancies were to mothers who got themselves and their children immunised?

Is non-immunisation widespread? Or is it fairly rare? If the vast majority of mothers in that rural area manage to get immunisations for themselves and their children, how does one substantiate a claim of ‘systemic failure’ in our health system?

And where is any mention of personal responsibility – or is any failing in our health system whatsoever, and for whatever reason, all out down to ‘systemic failure’?

I remember the great bloody lie put about by many after Kiri Allan got cancer, ably abetted by our news media, that she was yet another victim of a racist health system – but which was blown out of the water by Allan herself when interviewed about it she said “it was entirely my fault, I knew I should have been getting regular tests and check ups but I didn’t because I’ve always felt uncomfortable about things ‘down there’. (My paraphrasing.)

And where was the RNZ reporter, Mary Argue, in challenging Dr Sinclair’s claims as opposed to merely repeating his claims without a single enquiry? If she hasn’t enquired further she is at minimum potentially contributing to the spread of misinformation but at worst contributing to a situation where millions of extra taxpayer dollars are plowed into fixing ‘systemic failure’ where none exists!

All in all, a poor show and one all too frequent in our news media nowadays.

Yesterday I posted a comment on the poor response from Goldsmith and the race relations commsion with regards to segregated ticked sales.

This morning I wanted to post that this is a great example of why we dont need to spend $n on a commision that exists only to post (nothing burger) press releases. However I wanted to find exactly how much we do spend on this commsion for my post.

It turns out the information is very difficult to find. Various searhes only return the amt of increases announced in various butgets. Doing an AI search, couldn’t find the information but recommend looking at the budget. However after spending a few minutes searching the various budget docs (https://www.treasury.govt.nz/publications/budgets/budget-2025#collection-group-heading-0) the information isn’t there either.

Does anyone know where you can find this sort of information? It seems the government is purposefully hiding the amout it spends on various departments, probably to stop people like me complaining about the wasted money.

  Fairly recently I dug up online an HRC report of just a few years ago and saw that the total budget of the HRC was around $10 million annually.
  
  My best guess is that it would be in the $12-15 million range now, annually.
  
  How much of this is for supporting the race commissioner function, I just don’t know.

  “Suggests” and “may be disrupting”. Nothing definitive there. There was also mention of how some aspect of all this related to God. Really?! And the headlines in bold referred to significance to Te Reo but no mention of it in the article.
  
  The only benefit I can see is that the researcher is very easy on the eye.
  
  In any case, they’re extinct the moa. A bit late to do anything about it now.

  It is not at all complicated. The East Polynesians arrived in NZ to find protein by the bucket load. As a consequence they bred like rabbits. No protein existed inland except for the big flightless (mainly) birds. 33 species of birds were hunted to extinction including all species of moa. End result, by the time Cook arrived, most of the East Polynesians were huddled around the coast and were still eating each other as part of the whole tribal survival scenario.   Removing eaves from houses was ever a silly idea. While they might give the building a modern clean lines look they were there for a reason. To keep the rain out of the walls (leaky building otherwise) and to keep the sun out in summer and let it in, in winter.

      Gutters are to control stormwater to bring it to one place so it can be piped. Without gutters its all overland flow and takes open drains to gather which are a major cost and maintenance item.
      
      They only block because they are too small and 80mm downpipes. Use 150mm gutters with 100mm droppers/down pipes.

        Or you can go without gutters as my parents house has done on a large section for many decades. Dropping water into bushes and wide concrete paths surrounding house. Zero maintenance hassle and cost.
        
        Guttering creates larger problems with handling intense downpours, needing all sorts of extra sumps, detention tanks etc that would be unnecessary if we didn’t employ guttering.

An Obituary printed in the London Times

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn’t always fair; and
Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn’t defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I’m A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

RIP David Lynch
An amazing filmmaker, with such an unique style that films that mimic that style are called Lynchian.

I love all his films but my personal favourite is “Wild at Heart”. It’s absolutely choka filled with Lynch moments and the actors are fully on board with it. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern are fantastic and Willem Dafoe is absolutely chilling as Bobby Peru. I’m stilled stunned it won Cannes.

And then there’s “Twin Peaks”, there was nothing like it on television at the time.

  If you only look at TPC polls, ACT and NZF combined are within a couple bps of the early Dec poll. If you look at all polls, there is nothing out of range in this one. Over all ACT and NZF are flat, Nats are trend down, Lab are trend up, greens are trend down. TPM maybe flat, maybe a touch trend up.
  
  Overall, Nats are bleeding probably to undecideds (which is hard to know if its undecided to lab or undecided to ACT/NZF), Greens are bleeding to lab and that is about all that is going on.

  You’re a bit defensive. It’s pretty simple G, people that voted Nat had reasonable expectations of things like cutting of the public service (and not just a few hundred jobs), stimulating growth, tougher on crime, and so on. Nat has delivered a minuscule movement back to the right, say 2% undoing the labour moves to the left. So people are disappointed, gutted tbh. If they wanted Liebour they would have voted red; instead they voted Nat and got slightly lighter red.

Latest polls not good. Perhaps our PM should consider a televised state of the nation address to the “folks” as they say in the US?
As an ex National Party supporter I don’t get any feelings of leadership or strong direction for our country at present. The 50 point plan scenario is admirable compared to the dross we have been fed up until now, but it’s obviously not winning the battle for our hearts and minds.
I get the sinking feeling Luxon is not that sort of leader who could or would front up with a state of the nation presidential speech to address the slide. Prove me wrong Chris.

Something which has puzzled me since the signing of the coalition agreement, is why did Luxon agree to the Treaty Principals Bill. Yes its only to the first reading but that makes it even stranger to me. If he had not agreed to having it in the Coalition Agreement what would ACT have done sit on the cross benches would not have gone with Labour. Luxon is opposed to the Bill he knows it will divide the country, the latest opinion poll shows ACT is not gaining from it, so why agree to have a first reading then destroy it. It makes no sense. I asked the question of our local National MP recieved a long winded reply without an answer. Can somebody more wise than me explain why Luxon has done what he has done.

This brings new meaning to the phrase “go woke, go broke”.

It all started when left-wing management staged a free conference on “reinventing the refugee welcome in France” on December 10. More than 200 migrants showed up.

However, when the event, whose speakers included Red Cross officials and eminent academics, came to a close, the migrants refused to leave and have been occupying the building since.

Their numbers have swelled to around 350 and the venue, a digital arts and contemporary music hub, is now on the verge of bankruptcy due to cancelled events.
