      Replace Luxon with someone else and National will remain rubbish.
      
      Grant (really MSM) is promoting the idea that the National party itself is sound it just needs to right people to drive it.
      
      The reality is the National are fundamentally broken in that they don’t act in their voters interests. National work for the expansion of the political and central power of the state. National think they have the necessary characteristics and skills to wield the power of the state to force NZ into an image of how things should be.

    While I agree with your criticism of National; in this piece Grant points out Luxon’s failings and that he’s unlikely to apply to himself the same standards that he expects of others. He also says National are doomed unless Luxon steps down. Having been gifted the keys to Premier House, he fails to grasp in politics, unlike any of his previous jobs, he’s got to reapply every day. He’s not only a terrible communicator; he’s evidently not learning how to improve.
    
    I disagree with your sweeping dismissal of Grant; I tend to think Stuff’s intro statement says much about how they publish this ‘Libertarian’ view as a tokenistic attempt to be balanced.

    Apparently Luxon and Willis are in possession of a book that proves the climate scam is not a scam.
    Remember the time when they made Maureen Pugh read it!
    I couldn’t help thinking that it would have been much easier at the time for James Shaw to provide the book to Maureen as a response to her query.
    But he got all emotional therefore Luxon and Willis had to publically humiliate Maureen.

  I witnessed a Minister become frustrated in a meeting with officials. She picked up one of those heavy desk staplers and threw it at the wall of her beehive office. It brought the meeting to an end. 🙂 There were no consequences and no apology.
  
  We will never know all of the facts in this latest case. This government is becoming as open and transparent as the last government.

      There was a Giles cartoon (UK) years ago showing Chalky throwing a piece of chalk at a pupil. The pupil commented – Selwyn-Lloyd’s (Education Minister equivalent) wage cuts have properly niggled him this time – there is weight behind these pieces of chalk.
      At my high school, boxes of chalk were not issued to teachers. They had to send a kid to the office who was given six sticks of chalk only.

      Excellent point.
      
      I’ve tried to explain to more than one woman why men tend to either get along with each other or remain at a distance.
      
      Women deal with each other through groupthink, gossip and character assassination. If men tried that all hell would break loose so we learn to keep it in check, which is why when male violence happens it’s usually pretty shocking.
      
      Women tend to act out their violence through slamming of doors and throwing of things at other things. If a man did that he’d get a visit from the constabulary.
      
      When in a heated argument men tend to raise their voices as a way to relieve physical tension. Some women adopt the tactic of demanding, why are you raising your voice? It’s a stupid tactic because if the man goes silent the woman has only succeeded in creating a powder keg.

        When I was learning to fly (good old North Shore Aero), there was one instructor who used to take a ruler along with him. If you didn’t keep at least one hand on the engine controls when ‘in the circuit’ (or at least final approach) he would belt you on the hand with said ruler.
        I remeber thinking.. ‘I am paying good money for this physical abuse’.
        Still, it did work. I always kept at least one hand on the engine controls in the circuit.

Regarding the Zelensky debacle, it appears that the USA expected Ukraine would come to the White House and sign the minerals deal. Apparently they could have signed earlier but Zelensky wanted the White house meeting to sign the deal.

It seems Zelensky wanted security guarantees before signing. That wasn’t the deal according to the Americans. Security guarantees would be part of a second deal but the minerals deal had to come first to compensate the Americans for hundreds of billions of dollars of aid.

Zelensky appears to have blown up the deal. The Americans expected the deal would be done. Zelensky appears to have over played his hand. He’s now visiting the British PM and King Charles which is all well and good. But they are not going to help make a deal with Russia. He needs America. Much more than they need him.

I think Zelensky needs to apologise and sign the minerals deal. Keep America onside and try and make peace.

  However I suspect Zelensky is more like Churchill , desperate to get the US directly involved in a war not of its choosing. ( that’s as far as the comparisons with Churchill goes though)
  
  Trump ( and JD ) are right not to get so drawn in.

  Zelenskyy is a puppet and an idiot, as Trump is in the king position.
  
  And I like a lot of what Trump has done. But politics is not a case of Black and White, good and bad, there are fifty shades of money.
  
  One of my concerns with Trump, is who is he making the minerals deal on behalf of? Who benefits?
  
  If it is Blackrock, and the other usual suspects, then Trump is simply continuing the plan that Obama worked on: Overthrowing the Ukraine, allowing – Zelenskyy in as a puppet, to give the elite access to said minerals, which was the underlying reason for provoking the war in the first place, by moving NATO onto Russia’s back door step.
  
  War is never about lines on a map, it is about money and access to natural resources.
  
  So who is Trump bargaining for when he wants Ukraine’s minerals. Clearly the minerals are not going to be dug up and stockpiled on the Whitehouse lawn.
  
  So who is Trump being a proxy for? Blackrock and J P Morgan are already balls deep in Ukraine. Is it them? Is the US govt going to sell the acquired mineral resources to these people? In which case Trump is no better than Obama or Biden.
  
  I think Zelenskyy now knows he has been played and that he was a pawn, despite getting very wealthy from the war, and therefore is in fear for his life.
  
  The Ukraine / Russia issue dates back to 1991, and the fall of the Soviet Union, and every elite grifter was in like a robbers dog to gain access to untapped wealth.
  
  When it comes to Oil and minerals, the puppeteers play the long game. It has taken 34 years for key players to get their hands on Ukraine minerals and resources.
  
  The big question: Is Trump complicit with the HW Bush/Obama/Biden/Deep State manipulation of Ukraine and Russia, or is he too being played?

        No, it was not.
        It was the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, which adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence in August 1991 as a consequence of the coup attempt in the Soviet Union a few days before. This was followed by a nationwide referendum with more than 90% votes in favour.

  It seems that Zelenskyy delayed the deal until he could be in Washington (OK, fair enough) but then tried to stiff-arm the US *publicly* for security guarantees in exchange for signing the deal.
  
  As Bessent explains, the whole point of the deal was to show everyone, including Russia, that US and Ukraine interests were closely aligned and no one should think about disrupting their arrangements. That’s a pretty sophisticated approach but Zelenskyy couldn’t let go of wanting the US to demonise Putin and commit to security guarantees, which is nuts since a peace process can’t begin with name calling, and giving security guarantees would essentially provide Ukraine with the same protection as NATO membership would.

  Not only that but the Europeans are jumping on the bandwagon, intimating an alternative minerals deal between the EU and Ukraine, and providing funds and troops and what looks like actual security guarantees which is essentially the same as NATO Article 5 mutual defence commitments.
  
  That’s what Trump meant to Zelenskyy with, playing with the lives of millions and starting WW3.

  Well one thing is true:
  POTUS is no longer the ‘leader of the free world’. Trump siding with the worlds dictators and despots has seen to that.
  Maybe that’s what Trump wants?
  
  But it is clear the USA will not come to any NATO members defence (article 5) so Europe (and Canada?) needs to create its own future.
  This might be a very good thing.
  Although I am not sure how ‘America will be great again’ if it has gone full isolationist?

  A thought or two.
  1. Many of these rare earth minerals are still undeveloped, so thew US will have to develope them first, before exploitation.
  2. The agreement was to help offset payments already made (by BIDEN).
  3. Starts to align (with skin in the game) the US with Ukraine, giving better leverage in negotiations with Russia.
  4. The aim is to get the aggressor (Russia) to STOP shooting.
  A side issue
  An agreement with Russia, will start to break the alliances with China and Russia. This will break up BRICS. He has already started working on India.

    @bjools. This is the most sensible comment so far.
    The mining deal IS the security guarantee. It will take billions of American dollars and many years to develop even the first product from the mines and will carry on for decades. Russia will not invade through US mines with lots of EU troops about the place.
    Some people, maybe Zelensky included, have the idea that the US is going to back up trucks to some warehouse and drive away with $500 billion of rare earth minerals, leaving Ukraine defenceless.
    Trump’s plan was brilliant.
    1. Remove US dependency on Chinese rare earths.
    2. Stop the killing
    3. Putin saves face and takes 10 – 15 years to rebuild army.
    4. Get the uber-smug Europeans off their high horses.
    5. All with no US casualties.
    
    Instead, Zelensky went all toddler demanding US start WW3 by fighting Russia.

      Just a small amount of research will show it was to be a joint venture. Profits from recovery to be split 50/50 with Ukraine. They could use their 50% for rebuilding.
      US investment would do the recovery, with US corporations and personel doing the digging (Near the Russian border).
      
      The thinking was that Putin would be hesitant to attack invade if American people were in the firing line, as sure as eggs are eggs the USA war machine would respond to protect its citizens.
      
      Needless to say, the MSM and lefty Europeans cant see anything positive from anything Trump does.

Professor Robert McCulloch has become increasingly critical of almost everyone. His latest “The PM and his Mates Have Left NZ Defenseless with No Allies, and Unable to Pay for our own Security” describes how National took office with defence expenditure at 1% of GDP and promptly cut it to 0.9%. For all the talk of “As close,to 2% as possible” from Luxon and a hint of 2.5% by Peters there’s no indication of where the money is coming from. National and its acolytes on this blog will claim that there’s a plan but until we see the detail (actually until we see the money) it’s hard to see that this is anything but wishful thinking. Trump is demanding 3% (when he’s not saying it should be 5%) and looking at the present woeful state of the Navy and Army (RNZAF has some new planes) it looks like 2% will only scratch the surface. The problem is not only the need to replace equipment. Frigates, drones and weapons will cost billions but the staff to operate them will also cost billions. We need more servicemen and women and we’ll need to pay them properly. The current lousy par rates are totally unacceptable. 2% might do this next budget but thereafter it’ll have to be 2.5 and soon 3%. “Growth” over the next 10 or 20 years won’t work. Show me the money!

    Quite right. It’s not Luxon who started it. The current era started with Sid Holland. But we were unprepared in 1914 and 1939. NZ has a long history of waking up after the event, with the result that our losses in both world wars were higher than they should have been. Holyoake, Muldoon etc kept defence below the minimum. The services actually did better under Labour. Tizard, for example, was an excellent Defence Minster, as was Ron Mark. I think Luxon realises that we have got to do better but the question is will he put in the effort to persuade the electorate?

There has been some lively discussions on this matter. One take on this is that the US and NATO contributed to this by reneging on the deal not to expand and enlarge NATO.

Let me say this now. No Such Deal exists.

In July 1990 the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, agreed to a united Germany’s incorporation into NATO. The US secretary of state at the time, James Baker, had previously told Gorbachev that NATO’s jurisdiction would not move beyond the inner German border, but Washington retreated from this position after examining the practicalities of part of Germany being outside the Alliance. As part of the deal reached by Gorbachev and the West German chancellor, Helmut Kohl, no forces of other NATO countries could be deployed on former German Democratic Republic (GDR) territory until after Soviet forces had left, and then only temporarily. There would also be no deployment of nuclear weapons. Moscow also received financial sweeteners, including 12 billion Deutschmarks to resettle returning troops. However, Gorbachev neither asked for nor was given any formal guarantees that there would be no further expansion of NATO beyond the territory of a united Germany.

From the end of 1993, Russian diplomacy voiced increasing opposition to NATO’s further enlargement, but accepted that it could not stop the process. Its chief lament was that several leaders of NATO countries in early 1990 had ruled out the possibility of NATO enlargement, and that the West had misled Russia. As Russia’s former foreign minister, Yevgeny Primakov, noted later with regret, there was no legal force to the statements by Western leaders.

The NATO enlargement myth also contains an important distortion of fact: while the Russian Federation became the de facto legal successor to the USSR after the latter’s collapse, Russia existed in different borders and its security interests were not synonymous with those of the USSR. Indeed, Russian leaders at the time did not want the West to regard the new Russia as a truncated form of the USSR, but rather as a country that had regained its sovereignty and was returning to its European roots after the tragedy of Bolshevism. In addition, the USSR signed the Charter of Paris in November 1990 with the commitment to ‘fully recognize the freedom of States to choose their own security arrangements’. The NATO–Russia Founding Act, signed in 1997, similarly pledged respect for the ‘inherent right’ of all states ‘to choose the means to ensure their own security’.

So Did NATO renege on it’s agreements that did not actually exist, or did Russia renege on agreements that did?

  You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how diplomacy works.
  Any sort of formal agreement is just a step in publicly putting on paper what has been privately agreed to.
  If the Western powers led Moscow to believe that was there understanding and if Moscow acted as if that was the agreement then that was the agreement.
  It’s no good just say “Ha Ha suckers! I didn’t sign and stamp anything !”
  The West backed out agreements on NATO expansion because of the usual mix of arrogance and incompetence but mainly because they believed that Moscow didn’t matter and couldn’t do anything about it.
  Any squealing now about how there was “No such deal” is just Western lawyering leaders hunting around for an excuse to say that none of this was their fault.

Recent reports from the Muslim community leaders us them saying give us the money and we’ll make the halal lunches. A few commenters here make strong claims that Russia is on its knees militarily, technologically, economically etc – with far inferior weaponry & soldiers. Also the many claims of brutality, war crimes, rape, kidnapping etc.
I’m really interested in the sources of these claims as it’s opposite from the feeds I get.
We know from the Covifiasco just how effective western propaganda is, are you sure you’re not getting it all over again, to benefit those who are making $billions out of this war?

    Soldiers use whatever is convenient at the time. Donkeys and horses are good for hauling gear in terrain where heavy lorries can’t go. Motorcycles are good for fast infantry assaults (speed is especially important in a battle space where any movement in the open has to be effected quickly before recon drones spot you and attack drones follow promptly). Vehicles of any sort can be useful. The Ukrainians do things like this as well and it doesn’t mean they’re in trouble either.

  Many commentators seem to believe that modern Russia is no different than the old USSR. It’s come along way since then, with Moscow and St Petersburg being modern European-looking cities. Moscow attracts young people from the former Soviet states for well-paid jobs and opportunities. Yes, there are deprived areas in the regions, but it’s a big country that is not all that populated outside of the cities. Really makes me wonder whether the intel is coming from. From sources inside Russia, or from a military industrial complex that wants the West to think that they are on the verge of winning and just need to send another billion or two of taxpayer dollars?

    Thanks for links. I’ll check them out soon. I’m slightly biased against YouTube as I saw many items not conforming to the desired narrative taken down over the last few years, but I’m open minded. Perhaps my bias is to live in a world that embraces traditional values, family, anti-woke etc, which is probs why my support lies more with Trump & Putin than “the other side.” I believe after the disastrous Communist experiments of USSR (where they extremely successfully exported it to the West) Russia has much to offer us, & I believe that they learnt enough about the inevitable results to renounce it as an economic/societal system. I’ve had 2 delightful Russian squeezes that were travellers here – to a small degree they influenced my thinking – cos I don’t believe I was of much value as a honeypot operation. But stranger things have happened. I remain in touch- they are saddened to be at war however still live pretty well over there in clean, migrant & crime free cities with all the trappings of decent society.

Christchurch folk can download the City Council’s 2025/26 plan.

The council invites citizens to do this and “Kōrero mai” (with English translation for the 90 per cent of the city that doesn’t know Maori — “Let’s talk”)

Proposed new borrowing is $443 million, which will take the city’s gross debt to $3.17 billion. Rates to rise again, this time by 7.58 per cent. To come from ratepayers: about quarter of a billion dollars.

The new sports stadium — “One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha” — is budgeted to get $92.45 million in 2025-26 and $21.2 million the following year.

The council’s district includes 159 rating units of “Maori freehold” land with total capital value of $37 million. The council can grant “remission” from rates for this land. This might surprise the thousands of Ngai Tahu readers of Kiwiblog.

        God only knows what you are reporting. Being shown that your article is 4 days old and not relevant after what happened yesterday. Something very obvious if you read what you link to, which is based on a tweet from Feb 26th. Something that is very obvious if you took a moment to look at what is happening around the issue.

    Although there’s no indication when that article was written there is a tweet embedded from Wednesday last week with pretty much the same information
    Moreover
    The article has the line
    “Rumor has it that Zelenskyy will be making a special trip to Washington soon for a signing ceremony”
    As the whole world knows he went to Washington, but the signing ceremony didn’t take place after everything turned to custard.
