Head winds facing NZ

Low wage immigration has failed. Basically, low wage immigration can not pay its own way for services provided by govt. (the general tax base) They take more out from the system than pay in. (Sure that is the case for at least 50% of NZ.) But immigration was a deliberate plan to boost GDP. Low wage immigration while good short term for banks and corporates hasn’t worked out in the medium or long term for NZ. Massive central planning failure showing no signs of changing course.

Climate change. Net zero nutjobs. Its insane. Basically, a massive cost burden forced upon society while middle manager DEI hires scold everyone for their living standards.

China. New and very stupid cold war against NZ big trade partner. China also is also pretty much the Australian economy. Its insane.

Maorification; Complete trainwreck. Creating a major problem. Basically, turning around 6 to 7% of population into needy petulant children. Forever holding their breath as a threat which panics the political class.

Crime. Now part of NZ culture.

  As others have posted the Nats will need to be well into the 40s if they are retain the Treasury benches next year. While they rely on ACT they cant rely on NZF. Even if the economy is on fire at the next election is Luxon the right Leader to get them there?
  Rightly or wrongly voters expect Leaders to made bold statements and set big hairy goals and achieve them if they are going to support a Leader and their Party.
  IMHO Luxon is too timid. He seeks to appease the media rather than treating most of them as his enemy and another Opposition Party. Seymour is much better at countering the media in a calm manner using facts.
  The problem is if not Luxon who? I dont see anyone standing out to replace him and from my memory Governments that replace their Leader part way through a term usually lose the next election. That is the problem for the Nats. Unless Luxon gets a major makeover they may struggle at Election 26.

    ACT should it 12/15% in the next election.
    
    After all they are the pacesetters for the Coalition Government getting good, necessary Legislation through the House.
    
    So far there is no indication that National and NZFirst are going to lift their game in the areas that Coalition voters wanted in October 2023.

        As ghost points out above, 4 year term was NOT a National pre election policy. If you look at Nationals web site most of their ‘policy’ is one of
        
        – Less regulation
        – Remove JA policy
        – More spending (health, police, army etc)
        – Inflation down
        
        Act is one of the few parties that have had major policy change legislation (End of life bill, treaty principals, 4year electoral term, charter schools). All major direction changes. Regardless of whether you agree with the policy, it is fair to say ACT is much more revolutionary and a party of change then National.
        
        Can you name one National policy that is actually new (something untried / done in NZ before)?

        ACT at present has two electorate MPs: David Seymour and Brooke van Velden.

    It’s the economy that will get the make over, almost daily there is improvement, yesterday for the first time since early 2021 the tax take was hire, probably because tourism has resumed equal with pre covid spend, beef, Lamb and dairy are well ahead of what was predicted. This month we will be delivered a positive GDP figure, along with lower inflation and dropping interest rates.
    
    I will be very surprised if people throw this government out if the economy is cranking up next year and return the worst government in history. Let’s not forget Lanour had a total majority and can not blame a coalition for their failure, throw in Greens and TPM the answer will be no.
    
    Yes Luxon sometimes let’s himself down, but the corner has well and truly been turned

    Not my favorite journalist, but the wife was listening to Duncan Garner’s podcast last night and he says there are now rumblings in the National leadership that Luxon isn’t cutting it and needs to be cut sooner rather than later. I don’t know where he’s getting his information but he’s talking about Paula Bennett being lined up as the new leader. I can’t see Paula coming back in after not standing post 2020. There would need to be a lot of maneuvering to get her into a position where she can be parachuted in as leader and new PM.

      Cam Slater is making hay out of that story as well. It could be the case that a major donor isn’t happy and exerting pressure. I just don’t see anyone in the National Party’s top tier who I prefer to Luxon at this time. He has a problem that I think he is an honest decent man who struggles with the agendas of the media to trip him up at every opportunity.

  The biggest problem with immigration is conflating low-value immigration (Uber drivers) and high value engineers (doctors, engineers etc).
  
  We need less of the former and more of the latter. As you say, the former are net tax consumers and the latter are net tax payers. We cannot build an economy with more low-wage workers.
  
  All these things are interrelated. The Maorification and climate hysteria are part of the reason NZ is not longer a desirable destination for high value immigrants.

    The reason for importing ‘low-value’ workers is that young New Zealanders don’t like doing the service jobs. They don’t ‘do’ tourist services, which bring in the foreign currency – which currency enables us to buy nice things from other countries, but what do they care?
    Young New Zealanders prefer to travel away from the country that nurtured them and seek the glamour of new horizons.
    As a result, we have willing workers from other countries who are willing to live here and contribute – and yet we malign them.

      A lot of that work — fruit picking, restaurant jobs etc — is done by temporary migrants. These are young people on working holidays.

Trump is doing a sterling job right now bringing peace to the world. Zelensky has now said that he will sign the minerals deal which is the first phase of the road to peace in the Ukraine. Trump has put pressure on Zelensky after stopping all military aid to the Ukraine and revoking the legal status of Ukrainian refugees to the USA.

These are tough moves but needed to get Zelenskyy to come back to the negotiating table.

Meanwhile Trump has sent a very tough message to Hamas and the people of Gaza, return the hostages, all of them, or else.

I predict that there will be a deal between Ukraine and Russia and the war will end. I am also hopeful that Trump will improve the Gaza situation. How that looks is unclear.

Trump should get a Nobel peace prize if he succeeds in bringing peace to those regions. He’s the only guy who could do it. And DPF and all the other never Trumpers should stand and applaud if Trump succeeds. He’s doing a great job. Best president in our lifetime. By a lot.

        USA is not the only one with obligations under those agreements. Others are ignoring theirs and have been freeloading on USA.
        
        All those agreements can be undone. There is no moral case for them.
        
        At the moment USA is playing the role that Great Britain played in the 1800s and early 1900s and the Roman Empire played 1000+ years ago. The Romans provided Pax Romana, Great Britain provided Pax Britania and more recently we’ve had Pax Americana.
        
        However all these ages come to an end. When Great Britain’s period came to an end the USA was there to step in.
        
        The problem is that now USA’s period is coming to an end. Eventually debt and such make it impossible to continue in this role.
        
        And now there is no new Western power to pick up the baton. Either:
        * Everyone joins in and plays their part and keeps the Western world together for while longer. <— what Trump seems to be trying to achieve.
        * The west no longer dominates the world and we head back to the geopolitical situation of the 1600s or before.
        
        China maybe fancies itself as the next player. That is problematic for at least the following reasons:
        * We Westerners mostly choke on the idea of the having non-Westerners in control. Some of that might be justified, some might be xenophobia.
        * China's economy is already floundering – quite likely they are not going to be able to sustain this role.

        USA has long run an economic model that relies upon international military leadership to boost its trade. They can cut back on that as they wish, but a lot of their primacy in the world is likely to take a battering as a result – as is giving the nod to Putin to keep the land he has invaded, and ignoring the hundreds of thousands of documented war crimes committed, and likely soon relaxing sanctions.
        
        US are no longer seen as a reliable or ethical defense partner. Despots will be rubbing their hands gleefully and the rest of the world will find ways of managing without USA.

      Putin is perhaps the most murderous politician of the 21st century. A megalomaniacal mafia thug who gives not shits about the tens of millions of lives he’s wrecked as he seeks to enrich and carve out a historic name for himself.
      
      Ukraine voted his puppet out in 2014, and he didn’t like it, so he manufactured a rebellion using money and provocateurs he supplied, and used the violence they fomented as justification for invasion – remembering he’s tried to take all of Ukraine, and fuck their democratic choices, not just areas of Russian ethnic majority – all of which voted to leave Russia in 1991.
      
      His referendums since 2014 are about as trustworthy as the elections he runs in Russia.
      
      Yes Ukrainian govt was and still is quite corrupt, but at least they got to have meaningful elections, and have a future aligned with the steadily advancing Eastern Europe if they can just avoid becoming serfs and cannon fodder for Putin’s empire….

        Putin has spent the last 30 years putting his country back together and is by far one of the most intelligent and sophisticated leaders of the current crop.
        His level of support by the citizens of his country exceeds that of every leader in the G7 including Trump who is the second most popular.
        All of the other “Leaders” have little or no support from their citizens for their stance on the Ukraine war

    surfing – I respectfully disagree with you and here’s why. Trump wants peace, he ran on ending endless foreign wars and has no interest in an ongoing war in Ukraine, or anywhere else. So the deal to end the war has to involve Ukraine getting peace and also Russia will have to get something. I presume there will have to be a land for peace deal where Russia gets to stay in at least part of the lands they occupy already. I don’t like it but I recognise the reality that Putin has to save face.
    
    Lastly the idea, persistent in never Trump circles, that Trump is dumb? Well he is the president. He won all the battle ground states and he kept or increased his vote share in every state. Not a single state broke for his opponent.

        What I do understand is the reality of world politics. Russia is in possession of some of Eastern Ukraine. What can be done? Drive them all out?

        A better analogy is the USSR defeated the Nazis and occupied Eastern Europe. The allies would have preferred they were not there. But who was going to drive them out? They had 6 million troops in eastern Europe.

        GST is applied at the border when imported goods pass through customs. If you import a container with an assessed value of $100,000 of goods in it, you will need to pay Customs $15k GST before you can have it cleared.
        
        Similarly, if you import a container with an assessed value of $100,000 of goods in it, and the tariff on those goods is 15% you will need to pay Customs $15k duty before you can have it cleared.
        
        GST and tariffs/duties are both collected at the border. Both are calculated as a percentage of the assessed value of the goods. Both are required to be paid before the goods are cleared by Customs.
        
        You are incorrect. Trump is right that a tariff and a sales tax such as GST have the same effect. The income from both goes directly to government and the duty/tax charged is passed directly on to the end consumer. NZ effectively has a tariff of $15% on almost everything that crosses the border.
        
        If you need further education call Customs or IRD.

If it ever actually was the case that car manufacturers were intending to move production into the US so as to avoid Trump’s import tariffs – they’re not intending it now.

Nobody’s going to bet that sort of money and resource on a policy that can be withdrawn, and may or may not be reintroduced within a few weeks, on the whim of a single person on the basis of a single phone call. That’s how Jacinda did lasting, possibly permanent damage to NZ’s oil and gas industry and it’s how Trump is doing lasting, possibly permanent damage to US industry now.

  I think comparing this to Cindy and oil is incorrect. None of Trump’s actions are reducing investment in the USA economy – whereas Cindy’s oil moves did.

    If it’s “just a negotiating tool” and “there’s no intention for long term tariffs” then how is the policy supposed to be encouraging investment in the US? What investors need above all else is confidence and certainty, and what they’re being shown is that there’s none of either in anything Trump says.
    
    How is the US economy being damaged – higher cost to import stuff they can’t do without and which Canada has alternative markets for and so doesn’t actually need to sell to the US (I don’t know as much about what Mexico buys and sells). As well as damage to to US export earnings. Even if the governments of Canada and Mexico were to lift all their retaliatory tariffs today, they can’t force royally pissed-off Canadian and Mexican consumers to go back to buying US products.

      Unless they move the manufacturing back to the US. Which is what is happening.
      
      There is no doubt that tariffs hurt NZ and other small countries by forcing prices up and inefficient production.
      
      But this is far from necessarily the case in the most productive and innovative economy on the planet.
      
      The US is capable of onshoring manufacturing, and still delivering reasonably priced reasonable quality product – for a while anyway. Because the firm owners are from offshore, the pitfalls of union/management rent seeking might be less onerous than they were in the 1970s – maybe.

        Makes no sense for the first five of those, all you do is push US production costs up (and give domestic US raw material producers room to push their prices up).

There a very interesting article by Williams Hague in the UK Times this morning. Hague was there last week. He finds the atmosphere in Washington unlike anything he’s seen including the Reagan years. (You’ll remember Hague addressed the Conservatives when he was 16, he’s now 63). The dominant themes in DC are fealty to Trump and that America is wasting huge amounts of money, mainly on Federal programs (sic) and Ukraine. Zelensky, for all his courage, had not read the room. Hague sees Starmer and other European leaders taking the initiative but recommends that Zelensky makes amends, starting with the minerals deal. Europe will have to take a huge step up. One would have to agree with all this – it applies down our way too. It’s all very well to criticise Trump but that’s actually irrelevant. We’ve all been bludging for far too long and it’s time we all paid our fair share

Advocates for more emergency housing and looser rules have anecdata to support their advocacy. One here, one there. Meantime the number of 2024 applications dropped from 7050 in January to 1833 in December. The advocates propose this is due to rule changes, and there is anecdata to prove it.

The rule changes were completely necessary as the previous system was being abused, poorly monitored and in any case was financially unsustainable. These days one of the new criteria is whether applicants have contributed to their situation, such as leaving one location for another, or giving notice on their tenancy. Seems fair.

MSD say they are treating applications on a case by case basis.

Richard Prebble has resigned from the Waitangi Tribunal, calling it “a rogue entity,” and a “self-perpetuating industry of grievance,” rewriting history to suit a radical agenda.
“The Tribunal now says Māori were promised economic equality. No government anywhere has ever delivered economic equality. As we will never have it, the Tribunal has created an endless grievance that can never be met,” Prebble said.

Businessman found guilty of money laundering $2M – he claimed he had no idea he was involved in illegal activity. Oh golly, tell me another. His brother claimed it was ‘above board’. It was pretty bleeding obvious he was facilitating a scam, with his experience he should have known better. Not only that, but he has seriously embarrassed his employer, a major consulting engineering firm, where integrity means everything. He is asking for a discharge without conviction – that must surely be the joke of the day.
The verdict should give the ‘green light’ for the victims to sue his backside off.

    They do a helluva lot of work so it is not surprising when things go wrong for whatever reason clients’ representatives look for someone to blame to protect their backsides. Most of the claims would fall over at an early stage and never reach arbitration or court.
    Two examples (when I worked for a power utility):
    1. Two Fletcher subsidiaries leased adjacent premises in a building and had separate power meters and accounts. Electrician made mistake (no wiring permit for work) and connected some of A’s load to B’s meter. When B found out, B wanted a refund for the excess power used. Utility had no way of knowing that there was an issue and said ‘nix’. No more heard.
    2. Upon final commissioning of a plant, motors ran backwards when they were reconnected to the permanent supply from a temporary supply. Seems electrician did not connect the three phases of the temporary supply. The consultant wanted the utility to pay for sorting the ensuing cock-up. The electrician should have properly checked the final installation including phasing (electricians are legally obliged to check and test their work before livening). Utility said ‘nix’.

    The ‘big cheeses’ are skilled and experienced operators and set things up in a way so others get caught and there is no evidence linking them to the crimes. also they are probably not in the countries where their orchestrated criminal activities occur. They need stooges to launder money, carry suitcases etc. and they are expendable.
    The Police (along with their overseas colleagues) do their best in trying to bring these big cheeses to justice, but there are most probably bigger cheeses who will evade capture.

  I don’t know much about Alberta other than it being an oil province and being a technology hub. They are a one of the more prosperous provinces. What do they score from the rest of Canada? Likely they are helping prop up other provinces. (eg. Newfoundland is full of beneficiaries and Quebec consumes tax).
  
  It is not obvious to me that Alberta would lose by leaving the rest of Canada and joining USA.

    Alberta and the other prairie provinces, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, are home to a one and a quarter million Ukrainians and descendants. These and smaller numbers of Russians had the experience and will to thrive in the tough climate.
    
    Maybe the prairie provinces will get a new surge of migrants from East Europe.

NZ Post is transferring its call centre to the Philippines. New Zealand jobs moving to low-wage foreigners.

The State-owned enterprise, which reported a loss of $14 million in its latest financial year faces much change, as emphasis continues to move from delivery of old-fashioned letters to delivery of parcels for increasingly on-line retailing. It’s a time of fast, tough change for the State-owned enterprise.

All the more shame for its emphasis on climate change issues and “sustainability”.

NZ Post’s moving into electric and hydrogen trucks, and is working on its waste.
This is from the last annual report, which notes that New Zealanders generate an estimated “17.5 million tonnes of waste per year”.

” …. we now have four different types
of trucks powered by electricity or hydrogen.
NZ Post was the first company in New Zealand
to add a hydrogen-powered truck to its fleet in
2023.”

And in waste, NZ Post is moving to a “circular economy”.

“Our aim is smart waste management, which is
one of the cornerstones of a circular economy.
While materials in a linear economy create waste
after use, materials in a circular economy are
collected, reused and recycled after each use.

Times are tough for businesses experiencing strong change, businesses like “postal” companies. Times for ever greater focus on immediate issues rather than saving the planet.

  There was an article a few days ago about the school getting the burnt plastic lunches that said there are, I think it was 27 kitchens around the country that heat up the meals. Ministry of education had investigated that incident and found the oven was set too high wnd there were no quality controls in place.

    Accepting that this incident like others of overheating has occurred, then I would have thought a checking process would be in place to ensure the product was fit for passing on to the children. Any receiver of a product should have measures in place to ensure the product conforms with the standards or specifications required particularly when there are known problems.

    Not going to happen.
    
    Compass just need to sort their QC. That doesn’t mean inspecting everything – it means designing a system where the problems don’t happen. Anyone with a QC background will tell you that you can’t inspect quality into a defective product. You need a system that is right first time.
    
    That said, the defect rate (hot stuff, burned stuff) is pretty low. Noone died. It should not be beyond human ingenuity to devise (and enforce) a system where these problems don’t happen. I would guess that Compass are doing this as we speak – they are in the business of delivering meals by the zillion and will sort it.

  Part of the problem is going plastic free (thanks Cindy).
  The pulped cardboard containers are fine for dry meals but are useless for anything with any sogginess/sauces etc.
  The containers lose their integrity and it is easier for them to spill hot contents.

  My understanding is that if you are in the governing party you dont need to rely on members bills to introduce legislation. So NZF could have done this with ACT and Nationals blessing. So either
  
  1) Act or National dont support it or more likely
  2) People like DPF complain when parties dont have enough members bills so they did it this way.
  
  I would put money on this bill not passing this term. I think this is virtue signaling by NZF who can now say ‘we have a bill about that’. In the same way as National and NZF are removing treaty references from existing legislation (at a rate of two per year). Its about optics, nothing else. They will be praying its not drawn.
