Self-styled Wellington insider Richard Harman says that Winston Peters should have consulted the PM before sacking Goff. It’s a measure of just how out of touch people like Harman are. Most of us think that the Minister of Foreign affairs heads the team which represents NZ overseas. The only remarkable about this would have been if Luxon disagreed with Peters. Peters is the Minister. Do your job! I get the impression that it’s open day on Luxon. Every man and his dog is having a go. He’s not that bad. Admittedly he’s not that good either and it’ll be a blessing when Erica Stanford takes over the leadership of the Nats. But Peters made the right call in sacking Goff and he didn’t need Luxon’s permission.

  How exactly will it be a blessing “when” Erica Stanford takes over the leadership of the Nats? Her voting record and her passionate enthusiasm for Pride marches show she’s an out-and-out progressive. If I wanted a progressive in charge, I would have voted Labour or the Rainbow Party.

My problem is that sexual minorities are what seems to matter most to Stanford – what other issue has she taken such a public stand on? Putting her in charge of education was a poor decision.       No but the problem is feeling the need to celebrate LGBTQ etc. we al (I think) accept people living their life as they like but this is a step too far. We dont expect people to celebrate Christian’s or Scots or 40 somethings or women who like wearing dresses, we just accept that people do their thing.

      Being extremely cynical I think most young males feign support/interest in stuff like this because they see opportunities for sex (from lefty females) in doing so. Because of of the immense drive from the small head at that age, it’s almost automatic. Young females because they think they are being kind and/or cool.

    If National are dumb enough to change out a sitting Prime Minister for an untried Minister then look forward to welcoming Chris Hipkins as the Prime Minister after the next election with Chloe Swarbrick as co deputy PM along with one of the TPM co leaders.
    
    The public hate instability, and for National to do that after the six years of the Ardern regime upheavals and instability would be just plain nuts.
    
    This government is making big in roads to a number of priority areas as the public sees it and improving our economic position. They aren’t moving as fast as some people, including me, would like in other areas but moving they are, and I don’t want National to commit political suicide for some sort of untried short term sugar hit that may or may not work out.

    I absolutely crack up at this reasoning: Luxon and the Nats are weak, disappointing and quintessentially Labour-lite, but imagine if we had Labour and the Greens! We should be grateful!!!
    
    I didn’t cast a party vote last election and probably won’t do so next year. I don’t care if we have a Labour/Green/MP government. It’s only marginally better with the current lot.

  Quite right. The PM is not a president.
  The British system (the one referred to in the treaty) is that the powers are individually given to ministers of the crown. They are not vested in the PM.
  The PM is the only minister who has the ear of the monarch, who in turn, appoints and disappoints ministers as recommended by the PM.
  
  Peters understands these constitutional arrangements.

  This goes back to Harman’s heyday, Clark/H2 era when nothing moved without the dead hand of the PM or her henchman being behind it.
  There are other ways of operating, especially in a coalition. Sacking an ambassador who did something really stupid in what is now a minor country for us is not a big deal. And I hate to say it, but Peters continues to impress as a Deputy, and a Minister.

      Not correct. High Commissioners are appointed to Commonwealth countries. Ambassadors to non Commonwealth countries. I was in Mozambique when it joined the Commonwealth big panic in London had to pull out the Ambassador and install a High Commissioner and change the building from a Embassy to High Commission. What fun

    I disagree completely. Stanford did two years of intense preparation to be Minister of Education while in opposition. She consulted widely and did not assume she knew everything. She learned a lot through discussion and reading. She has not been content to mark time as so many Ministers seem to be. She is determined to turn around the vast and broken ocean liner that is our education system. She came into office with a well-formed plan and has been putting it in place as rapidly as the ponderous bureaucracy of government agencies allows. She is smart, hard-working, not afraid to take decisions that piss noisy people off and, as you say, she is personable. As both a disclaimer and a credential for my claims here, I chaired an advisory group for her. She has done nothing but impress me with her commitment and energy.

      I really like her and do think she is doing a good job. However just like Luxon, she is a tinkerer not a change agent. She has kept all the MOE heads. She backstabbed Seymour over moving teachers only days to out of term times. Instead of backing him and forcing the change she chose to avoid upsetting the unions. (Yes I know they have contracts but you can’t contrat out of legal obligations)
      
      I think she would be way better than Luxon, she is more decisive and does defend her positions, but I we want change I am not sure she’s the woman for the job.

  When they spoke to Luxon at Cromwell on the way to the Wānaka A&P show he was asked if Goff should have been sacked, as I remember he said absolutely, and went on to say we are trying to get an agreement with the US to stop tariffs on trade, or words to that effect.
  
  If something is happening to get rid of Luxon, then I note Simeon Brown appears to be given s the green lights in health to push in the public eye, this may well have been organised through the party, and I would imagine that Stanford would be the deputy, they are the two best performing Nat ministers and will have support if the axe swings

I’m one of the people on this blog who thinks Winston Peters, and Shane Jones, are doing a good job. For instance, their statements in parliament and on social media about the Maori party have been spot on. Winston is also very anti woke. He’s just introduced the following anti woke, anti DEI bill:

  My problem with Winston is just that. He is great on the talk but not so much into the doing. I said yesterday, and I stand by it, I don’t expect the NZF bill to make it into law this term. It is there so Winston can say, Look we have legislation for that.

  What he wants to achieve with this bill is one thing. Whether the bill would, if adopted, actually achieve it is another. What does the bill actually say? How are its requirements to be monitored and enforced? How are managers expected to demonstrate that they selected the Maori woman because they thought she was the best candidate and not because they were being woke?

  Read again what Peters said. It is hard hitting and plain spoken. Many on this blog have wanted Luxon to speak like this. But Luxon is the moderate chairman of the board. Most National leaders are moderate and speak in this way.
  
  Under MMP this gives space for the coalition partners like Seymour and Peters to get stuck in. Peters may or may not get this legislation passed. But he has introduced it and vigorously supported it and that’s all he can do.
  
  Talking like this is great and is the way to move the culture back to the centre right, back to common sense.
  
  This is an example of the coalition doing good work.
  
  I hope that those of us on the centre right support this. DEI needs to be rolled back. I think we can all agree on that? 😎

Health New Zealand lost control of spending, Deloitte report finds

“There was no plan in [Health NZ] during 2023/24 that demonstrated an understanding of what would need to be true to stay within the income for the outputs and services to be procured or provided by [Health NZ].” A savings plan was drawn up in mid-2023, but did not work. “There were no supporting action plans, ownership, budget impacts, tracking and reporting, and governance applied to the savings programme.”

I expect Dr Verrall will be along any minute to assure we-the-people that Deloittes is out of order and that DEI appointment principles were correctly followed at all times.

      The bill is the major part of the ‘therapy’. Plenty of advice and ideas are available from existing staff for the asking, but management never bother to ask. When under pressure management hire consultants to appease stakeholders, then are captive to their advice and recommendations because management needs to show something for the cost.
      By the way there was a time consultant in London in the early 1800’s. She would go to Greenwich each week to synchronise a high grade watch she inherited from her father then return to the City and sell the time to people who needed to synchronise their watches. The advent of the railways and electric telegraph superseded that service since the railways needed accurate time and stationmasters set station clocks using telegraph time messages.

I checked them out beforehand, set and agreed deliverables, closely monitored their progress, managed scope relentlessly, planned implementation if any. Many managers did little of that, especially scope management. And often ignored findings and recommendations.

  As the story makes clear the vast majority of prisoners are there for serious sexual or violent offending. Burglars only get sent to jail when every non custodial sentence has failed to deter them. Our most prolific burglar has more than 400 convictions. Yes, thats four hundred.

      Under Labour rules the Caucus elects the Ministers and the Leader allocates the portfolios. So the Leader cannot bring people into Cabinet or exit people from Cabinet. Chris would find it more difficult than it is worth to try and change the people, so he has to be content with reallocating portfolios which is probably as fruitful as rearranging the Titanic deckchairs.

So a property developing couple have hired a high powered KC to get the attack dogs off their backs and to seek compensation from the long suffering taxpayer because they claimed the Government has effectively destroyed value in their empire resulting in losses to themselves and their investors. I was somewhat surprised because there would not seem to be the money to pay the KC’s bills. But presumably he would start by attacking the orders that has frozen their personal assets and their family trust. That could release a few million that would be used to fund stage 2 litigation. The administrators are finding things complicated because I think the couple had little understanding of elementary book keeping or office practice. XERO or MYOB – forget it – they probably did not use these tools or similar.

However in many countries (including NZ) possession of Tasers except by law enforcement is illegal. Rhode Island and Hawaii laws forbidding Tasers could be vulnerable to a Second Amendment attack.

How accurate is Dame Anne Salmond in saying “Te Tiriti, the document written in te reo, is the document that they signed, however”?

How many of the Chiefs making their mark on the document could actually read what they were signing, or was their assent based on the Treaty being read to them in te reo with presumably clarification where needed. While some notes were recorded at this stage there seems to be no detail indicating discussion of any ambiguities.

Dame Anne Salmond claims “To lecture us on Te Tiriti, you must first be able to read it. What does it say about our country that politicians and ex-politicians are instructing New Zealanders on a document on which they are literally illiterate“ but she does not explain that those who signed the te reo version couldn’t read it either and any discussion which convinced them to sign has departed on the “four winds” which the late Maori King mentioned.

Where does that leave her – or anyone for that matter

  What Anne Salmond should be explaining to us is how, and why, she seems now to be at odds with Ngata, Kawharu, the Maori Queen, and all the others who have been content to use the translations of the Maori version of the Treaty that have been readily available for more than a century. They form the basis for the principles that David Seymour wants recognition for in his Bill that is before Parliament. What does Anne Salmond know about the Maori language that Apirana Ngata, Hugh Kawharu and the late Maori Queen didn‘t know? She should tell us.

  Captain William Hobson and James Busby drafted the Treaty of Waitangi in English, and Henry Williams and his son Edward translated it into Māori.
  This original English Treaty is now known as the Littlewood Draft. Other versions in English are rogue.
  The Treaty in Maori was explained to the Chiefs by Henry Williams. They understood what it said.
  Anne Salmond is just confusing the issue. The Treaty was in English first so she talks rubbish.

The majority of murderers – 60%+ down from 80% 50 years ago – usually dont have prior records of violence. They are hot blooded rather than calculated killings, usually of someone close to them.

  Who is “we”? If by “we” you mean people who value freedom, democracy and the rule of law, then it’s hard indeed to make the case that Russia is a friend to any of that.
  
  If by “we” you mean New Zealand, we need to move on to consider what we mean by “enemy”.
  
  A country that represents an imminent threat of military attack? Certainly, Russia isn’t likely to attack New Zealand militarily, by virtue of the simple fact that we’re a long way from them and we don’t have anything that they want and can’t get more easily in other ways (the same applies of course to everybody else). Countries that are not a long way from Russia, however, clearly do think that Russia is an enemy to them in this sense. What has Russia done to prove them mistaken in that?
  
  A country that would put its own interests ahead of ours, where those interests don’t align? Well, that’s everybody, including Russia. Why would you expect any different?
  
  A country that governs itself in ways that we wouldn’t want to be governed? There’s plenty of them, and Russia is definitely among them.
  
  People who want to govern us in ways that we don’t want to be governed? Those are mainly if not exclusively to be found within New Zealand, and there are democratic and legal processes in place to ensure that they can try to achieve that only in legitimate ways. If you want to argue that those processes should be made more robust, bear in mind that any constraints on (for example) TPM’s or the Greens’ ability to hold and attend meetings, make speeches, stand for election, vote, comment on matters of public interest, etc – would also apply to ACT, the Taxpayers’ Union etc.

I am sick to death of the school lunch beat up by the media. Mind you the government made a complete fuck up of this. There’s 2 ways to fix this issue:

– Target it to only kids who genuinely need it. At the moment it’s being given to so many kids who don’t and costing this country an absolute fortune.
– Serve cold lunches like wraps, sandwiches, yoghurt, fruit etc. Why do we insist on it being warm lunches? I never once had a warm lunch at school. Food doesn’t need to be hot to be nutritious.

I know some people will criticise and say we shouldn’t do it at all but the reality is some kids do need food to learn effectively as their parents don’t provide it for whatever reason. I know it’s a parent’s responsibility but I don’t think we should let kids go hungry just to make a point.

    Yes, a lot of history there too, MCos. Poland gave Russia a whupping in the 16th or 17 th century, and Russia & Germany decided to carve up Poland between them in WW II, so very little love lost between them.
    There have been many territorial changes in that part of Europe from the time after Jenghis Kahn’s occupying most of what was Eastern Europe back in the 13th.century, and Ukraine used to be a part of the Polish Empire.
