Here’s a conundrum. How come when a dog wags its tail it is saying I am happy to see you but when a cat is waving it’s tail it means the opposite?

  There’s a lot more to dog tail-wagging than your simplistic statement.
  
  F’rinstance, if the tail is held low making short sweeps then that indicates the dog is anxious or stressed and you probably shouldn’t approach it further.

* Taking action on climate and honouring the Treaty
* Ensuring there is a firm grip on the Council and its finances.

These are Andrew Little’s priorities. You can’t argue with fixing the pipes, supporting business and the economy and a firm financial grip. The “how” will be interesting, given he was a very senior part of a government which couldn’t organise a party in a brewery.

But cheaper public transport? Impossible unless he’s going to subsidise it with rates. Action on the climate? He thinks he’s God? Honouring the Treaty? By degrading democracy even further? No thanks.

Wellingtonians will probably vote for him and will therefore get what they richly deserve which is increased rates, a less liveable city and co-governance with unelected Maori tribes. We have a bit of the same but at least the weather in Tauranga is better!

    They are moving into a brand new building worth $45 million, and are spending $33 million fitting it out, and then are going to pay $90 million to rent it for 15 years!
    
    Sounds like a great deal for the owner.

      Having been involved politically (and failed to make the buggers see sense) in Council accommodation, structures, there was and is NO REASON to house Council staff in the CBD.
      
      Almost as Stupid as having a Tertiary Education centre in the CBD. Yep failed in that one as well.
      
      Ahhh those were the days when I was politically active. 3 decades ago. Dont miss it a bit. But the power can go to your head a bit (the ability to talk directly to Mayors, MPs, Polytec Board, CEO of the Port, CEO of the Hospital etc etc.
      Makes you think you are special, hence those without brains who fall in to the “do you know who I am”” crap
      
      In retrospect, not many of them were gifted with big picture thinking, as they mainly concentrated on keeping their jobs. Main Exception, CEO of The Port.

    NMTB: we do get some “gentle rain from Heaven” occasionally, to be sure. Good for the garden and for the kiwi fruit and avocados. The zephyrs of Wellington which dislodged part of our roof (in the 80s) were a factor in the move north.

      Heh, before my time but most of the roof of my Wellington house lifted in the Wahine storm. Some lodged in the yard of a house down the road. Most of the deco carrara ceilings and cornices sadly needed to be replaced.

      Little was a glorified politcian from day one.. ie a Lawyer for a Union after being a student activist.
      
      He was elected president of the Victoria University of Wellington Students’ Association and later served as New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations (NZUSA) president in 1988 and 1989.[6]

    He seems to benefit financially from every body he is connected to as do members of his family.
    Surely, given the opacity of his dealings, the very strong implications of political involvement, and appearance of massive corruption the SFO must take a close look at him and his associates?

      A while ago we had a bank that was planning to debank fuel retailers because of the climate scam.
      
      I wonder how they feel about providing services to an organisation and people who may have committed election, political, and financial fraud?
      
      The banks would know where the money went, they are fastidious about it. Try withdrawing a couple of grand of your own money without getting the third degree from a teller…

  As a former Auditor I suggest either the Auditor wouldnt sign the accounts because they didnt comply with accounting standards or issued a heavily qualified report which the Maori Party doesnt want to file because of its content.

    As another former auditor I agree whole heartedly with Lastmanstanding. Few people nowadays can work out that the auditor’s report is one of the most important parts of the annual financial statements of any outfit.
    The Maori party M.P.s were duly elected. They are entitled to their place in The House. But, if they treat the laws of our country like used toilet tissue they are the ones who should be flushed away from perquisites such as the Koru Club and airfares. Give them taxpayer funded bus or train tickets until they get their own house in order. Interestingly, back in the days when the Maori people made up such a small percentage of our prison population all M.P.s travelled by bus or train.

      It needed to be remembered in those days air travel was not an option in many cases. Parliament had a short sitting season (they did sit Friday mornings) in recognition that MP’s faced rigorous travel and some possibly did not return home each weekend. Also farmer MP’s had their farms to tend to so Parliament sat in the farming off-season. Ministers could not spare the time for frequent travel and were expected to live in Wellington – hence the ‘Ministerial House’. Indeed some ex Ministers such as Jack Watts (remembered in law firm Minter Ellison Rudd Watts) and Bill English remained living in Wellington after leaving Wellington.
      And there were travel hazards – John A Lee’s enemies hired a prostitute to ride the overnight train to Auckland to try to seduce him in the sleeping car. She failed.

    This seems the most logical answer not that I have ever been an auditor.
    
    However as the past President of a Lawn Bowling Club I do know auditing requirements became a lot stricter 15 or so years ago.
    
    No just signing the dotted line with the appropriate sign off wording. There were kick backs on them if the Auditors missed something as I recall.

  Why would TPM or any party for that matter, bother filing returns or declaring donations. If you read the link there are two obvious trends, TPM doesn’t care to follow the law and the police will never prosecute.

In this article about the Chathams, this line stood out: “its sky-high power prices – $1.29 per kWh, compared to the 35-cent average paid on the mainland”.

The place is a vision of our future if fossil fuel prices continue to increase.

Perhaps Jacinda’s NZ passport should be endorsed for the Chathams only.

  I’ve only been there once but from I saw of the place it would appear to be one of the few places around where wind turbines would pay for themselves. Anything under about 30 knots out there is considered flat calm by the locals .

    Yep, However it needs a coordinated approach as opposed to various land owners putting up there own “independent” system.
    Last time I was there , They were still trying to find the missing parts from excess wind. destroying the Windmills.

    That is the practicalities of solar/wind power. A backup is needed whether for a single household or for a whole nation.
    People choose to live on the Chathams, Great Barrier Island etc. It is really the job of the locals to get together and coordinate an approach to electricity if they want reticulated electricity. Waiheke Island seemed to have pulled that off successfully years ago, but they were lucky because there was sufficient population to warrant a relatively short submarine cable (they have to pay a higher tariff to meet the cost of the cable). Stewart Island has coordinate electricity supply but are having trouble about deciding on what wind/solar generation to build. The distance from Bluff is such that a submarine cable would be hopelessly expensive.

  Would be interesting to compare the support and investment the mainland provides to the Chathams versus how much aid is paid out to foreign pacific neighbours.
  
  Even redirecting the millions chucked at the Cook Islands to the Chathams would make a big difference to much needed investment in core infrastructure.

    Up to a point you have to say no more financial support. There must come a time when some areas on the planet must be considered unviable or unable to work financially. Examples of this are deserted towns in USA and in Italy. It’s not to say don’t support NZers in any area but the support needs to be in proportion.

  At those prices massive over-capacity of PV would probably make sense. Build 10x too much so you have enough power even on cloudy days in winter. With Grid scale installations that would be cheaper than diesel.

    A combo of PV, plenty of wind & a large battery would do the job, so long as Islanders were willing to have the occasional back out. However, there can’t be too many still days in the Chathams.

      large installs seem to cost about $1500/kW. And island uses something like 0.5-1MW. So probably ~$45million for 30MW peak capacity PV with 10MWh of battery for overnight costing around $5mill
      
      Electricity there is currently costing about $10 million a year on diesel + genset upkeep, so this would be something like 5 year payback for a system likely to last for 20 years.
      
      Chatham’s land is nearly worthless, this would take maybe 150 hectares.

  Partly, it’s modern medicine to blame. How many times have you read about miracle babies who survive despite being born at twenty something weeks? Similarly, how many people are “saved” from car crashes etc?
  
  In years gone by, many of these people would have just died, and therefore not show up in the disability stats.
  
  The reality, once the headlines have gone away, is that many of these people are disabled and require bulk medical and taxpayer support to live a half way decent life.

      When studying economics I was told, large scale public health works such as sewers, clean water supplies, good food standards, building roads for fast transport, eliminating disease-carrying insects and the like have had the most impact on the length & quality of human life. What surprised was being told Hospitals had negligible effect on the overall health of the population.

The processed crap children are fed everywhere full of colouring, preservatives and dozens of other chemicals that could easily interfere with the immune system can’t be doing anyone any good. Sometimes the answer is in plain sight. Kennedy would also be better trying to stop the measles epidemic spreading through the country. Or is that just an act of god.

    We know that the gut comprises more than half of the immune system. We know rhst the gut doesn’t know what to do with thi ga like emulsifiers rhst it does not recognise. We know that ultra processed foods cause inflammation which “distracts” the immune system. Inflammation is implicated in most health conditions.
    
    Cleaning up peoples diets seems a really good place to start in improving health.

The Supreme Court’s use of tikanga Māori in Peter Ellis’ posthumous appeal aimed to honour his mana and legacy, but it raises concerns. While the Court treated tikanga as a source of general legal principle, applying it to a non-Māori without his consent may feel like overreach or cultural imposition. Some may see this as undermining Ellis’ memory, especially if the case becomes more politicised.

The idea to continue Peter Ellis’s appeal after his death — and the incorporation of tikanga in doing so — originated from the Supreme Court itself. While the case arose unexpectedly, legal scholars and Māori advocates had apparently long anticipated and hoped for such a case to advance recognition of tikanga in New Zealand law.

Why would tikanga play such an important role in this decision? Peter Ellis wasn’t Māori, and nor, apparently, were any of the children involved in the case … Because, says the court, tikanga Māori is the first law of Aotearoa and its principles rightly inform the interpretation and development of the common law of Aotearoa. …
Yet, not surprisingly, the Supreme Court’s recognition of tikanga in this case has drawn criticism. A columnist for the New Zealand Herald called the court’s decision to invoke tikanga “audacious” and “judicial activism with a capital A”. …
I don’t find the court’s tikanga decision audacious — rather courageous, revelatory and profound. It is no more audacious than the sun rising after a long night. Darkness giving way to light.

Many legal professionals saw the Ellis case as a perfect storm: high public interest, an ongoing appeal, a death, and a long history of contested facts and fairness — all factors that made it a powerful vehicle for testing whether mana could justify continuing an appeal.

But the introduction of tikanga, integrated into New Zealand’s law through the Ellis Case, may actually impoverish the mana of Peter Ellis, both in motive and the further detriment it will become to Peter’s memory
if “views [that] are a throwback to colonial times” and such moments are focused on the “Ellis Case”

An example: There is no single, legislated test for “who is Māori” in law — yet.
No universal or court-tested “threshold” exists, but this could become contentious if tikanga-based rulings or advantages (e.g., in sentencing, land access, consultation rights) are perceived to confer unequal benefit. If tikanga doesn’t diverge from common law, what purpose does it serve? Its value is precisely in bringing a different, Indigenous lens to justice, land, and social relationships.

All because of the “Ellis Case” – with vast controversy before his death, and now posthumously he is made responsible for the Trojan Horse insertion of Maori tikanga, demeaning his mana and reputation that tikanga is said to protect. It is time Justice allowed Peter Ellis to rest in peace. Justice ill-served Peter Ellis in life, and now could serve him ill in death – hardly tikanga’s ‘utu’, or rebalance.
If tikanga is the cat’s pyjamas, a highly admired or exceptionally excellent thing, it should have been introduced in its own clear right and transparent mana, not slid into the justice system in an almost criminal way.

Kicking this can down the road is only going to spread the worms around

  Tikanga is merely customs and traditional values. The Maori race isn’t the only race on the planet with customs and traditional values. Why then specifically take into account one particular race’s customs and traditional values (CATV) and use them to interpret the law for someone that isn’t from that race. If the courts, in legislation are somehow required to take into consideration CATV then surely they should first determine what Ellis’ race was. I’d question where in any legislation does it say CATV steers interpretation of the law.

Hey guys. Its Easter Friday. It focuses on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on a Roman cross. Widely recorded by Jewish and Roman writers as well as the gospel writers. Pretty solid evidence and made more a challenge by it being predicted hundreds of years earlier.

Our crumbling society, its values and cultural principles are anchored on the teaching of Jesus and his followers. Seems like we are abandoning most of these proven foundations. It is not difficult to see its a backward and dangerous movement.

Why are we so determined to reject the tried and true?

A Parliamentary Party says Maori should get NZ Super 7 to 10 years before others. Well, there is precedent – emergency housing. Applicants can now be declined if they are considered to have caused or contributed to that need. Declines are happening.

A change to super eligibility age for individual applicants would need to be independently documented of course, with strict criteria. User pays. Presumably discounted for non-Maori heritage.

  Never mind that since 1840 Maori life expectancy has gone from 30 to 75, while others have gone from 40 to 81. Which means Maori life expectancy has improved 150% while others only 100%

    There is clearly a strong genetic element to longevity. We see it in family lineages as well as between ‘races’. People whose ancestry is predominantly from cold climates where k-selected breeding strategies (small families with high child-rearing investment) tend to live longer for obvious evolutionary reasons.
    
    Given equal access to medical treatment and care in looking after oneself it is almost certain that north asians and north europeans will live longer on average than africans, polynesians and other near-tropics ethnicities where r-type (have as many kids as possible with low child-rearing effort) breeding strategies dominated.

  If this ever came to pass there would have to be some very firm definition of who is Maori. As I understand it at the moment all that is required is for one to identify as (or is it “feel” ?) Maori.
  That leaves the door open for a whole lot of new Maori!

      Seriously if you’re not Maori for health purposes at least you’re a mug.
      I was on a necer ending wait list for a diagnostic procedure…. 6 months? I Cha fed my race to Maori on my health record and 3 weeks later had a call from private hospital to book me in for free.
      Coincidence? Maybe or perhaps not.

    Many Pacificas recently are are now calling themselves Pacific Maori as cross relationships are coming forward, which they believe that as such they are as entitled as anybody calling themselves Maori of which there are none.
    Maori are really Pacificas anywas a that is where they last came from.

      As far as I know, all of the other Pacific Islanders have viability- as in they can all reproduce full blooded children of their own race.
      Maori have passed the point of no return.
      There won’t ever be another full blooded maori child.
      Therefore, reducing the age for super would be pointless as it would then need to be raised again as part-maori assimilated further.

Just checked the status of sh2 roadworks that have been most irritating… they’re scheduled to go for 2 years, for the installation of a roundabout. It’s insane!

Issues I’ve had, are 10-25 minute delays. Especially bad are when they move road cones – a new thing I’ve noticed recently — a truck picks up or deposits cones at walking pace, maybe up to a km of cones. They don’t give the large line of traffic that builds any chance to pass until every last cone is done!

I’m not impressed when I see Simeon on the news. No-one seems to mind though, drivers are all sheep. I’m the only person in NZ that has objections , I think.

But, I follow overseas news, and I’ve worked/lived in Germany and witnessed their impressive road building machinery in action.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday accused a Chinese firm, Chang Guang Satellite Technology, of directly supporting attacks on U.S. interests by Iran-backed Houthi fighters and called this “unacceptable”.

Earlier, the Financial Times cited U.S. officials as saying that the satellite company, linked to China’s military, was supplying Houthi rebels with imagery to target U.S. warships and international vessels in the Red Sea.

A couple of questions.

I wonder what this will cost? Exactly what sort of revenues will flow to tangata whenua? And exactly which tangata whenua? In what quantities?

Secondly, if this goes ahead and we look back in ten or twenty years to see that co-governance added, just for example, 50% to the costs of managing the Waitakeres and for the same or similar conservation outcomes – Will this be regarded as a success or a failure?

I don’t expect answers to these sort of questions, they are rarely ever answered and I suspect the point of this exercise is co-governance, local-Maori elite control and revenue flow – improved conservation outcomes being merely the smokescreen.
