Six previous drunk driving convictions. This time, the offending was aggravated by driving over the speed limit.

39 previous convictions for offences including violence, drugs, and dishonesty.

Robinson was sentenced to six months supervision, with three months of community detention, along with an 8pm-6am curfew. Despite working as a builder, he claimed that he was unable to do community work for health reasons.

In my view, Robinson should have been sent to prison for a short period – perhaps a month. A short, sharp shock might, just might, cause him to reflect on his poor decision making.

  I agree. However if his “poor health” reason is sufficient to excuse him from community work it will almost certainly allow him to claim Home Detention. Sadly that seems to be the way it works.

Prof Robert McCulloch investigated TV One: “There is no place in a nation for a State Broadcaster to insult the views of religious people as being “antiquated” and “patriarchal”. Who is One News to play God? It should be defunded and wound up. One News serves no social purpose, other than to create division and unpleasantness in New Zealand society with its stupid “investigations” into nothing.”

TV one put a lot of effort into investigating the Destiny Church and found that its culture was pretty much that of Islam and the Catholic Church ie intolerant of homosexuality and dominated by men. I’m not too sure that the Catholic Church is intolerant of homosexuality because someone has concluded that half the cardinals are gay but Islam makes Destiny look positively liberal.

McCulloch thinks that TVNZ steers clear of criticising Islam because it fears the consequences and I’m quite confident he’s right. Charlie Hedbo. He’s also right that it should be wound up. Waste of taxpayers’ money.

  Cassandra – spot on. TVNZ does create division and unpleasantness and should be sold in my opinion. There is no benefit for taxpayers to prop up this partisan enterprise.
  
  We all still remember their slavish adherence to Jacinda and their refusal to criticise her on anything.
  Two things stand out for me:
  – Jacinda announces no more oil and gas exploration. No problem from our state broadcaster.
  – Jacinda gets up on a Tuesday and announces there is one covid case in NZ and because of this every NZer is under virtual house arrest and must stay home for the foreseeable future! No problem says our state media!
  
  Given their partisan incompetence what is the case for continuing to prop them up with taxpayer dollars?

  I add that TVNZ’s bias is not solely the result of any fear of terrorism. Much of it aligns with the Green/left approach, a vehicle for some very weird politics. How a lefty can promote LGBTQ at the same time as Hamas strikes me as strange.

    I’ve long thought that a Green/left ideology makes the subject lose sight of normal human decencies.
    The goal becomes so important, so all consuming that the end not only justifies the means, it actually compels the means.
    This explains anti oil zealots gluing themselves to the road with no thought to the consequences for people heading to important or even vital appointments.
    It explains doxing small business people for simply voicing an opinion, potentially causing the destruction of their livelihood.
    And it explains how they can be fooled into believing that Hamas is the victim and why they wear keffiyehs and abuse Jewish people simply going about their daily business.
    The zealotry is magnified and ramped up in Green/lefty echo chambers like the Standard and the Daily Blog where dissenting voices are shouted down or banned.

  Maybe TVNZ, or taxpayer funded media, could take a good look at the fiscal input to solo parent households with no liable parent/s named.
  
  I remember Paula Bennett referring to men who father children in multiple households as ‘feral’. These days, they are technically liable for child support, but if they are not named they can slide under the radar while taxpayers pay income and other subsidies to the households …
  
  Anecdotally also hear of quietly polygamous groups that oversee multiple households but for ideological reasons. Antiquated, patriarchal? Taxpayer funded? Probably. Unless liable parents are named, who knows.

      A few years ago a young woman I know refused to name the father of her baby.
      She knew who it was but had fallen out with him and didn’t want him to have anything to do with the child.
      She didn’t want the bother of having to co-operate with visits to allow the father access to the baby then, or in the future, because she didn’t want to see him.
      This occurred around the time that the idea of not having to name a child in order to obtain a taxpayer funded benefit came in. So the father, whether he liked it or not, had less opportunity to see his child.
      Worked for her.

        If the welfare of the child was a concern, we would insist on knowing (and confirming by DNA test, if requested) the name of the father. Not only does the father have a moral and financial responsibility for the child, but the health of the father and his family is relevant to the likely future health of the child.
        
        It would also be nice if we could establish a limit on taxpayer beneficence. Say, a maximum of 3 live births per parent and then we offer continuing support on condition of permanent birth control measures only.

      It was The Times, an article by Tom Kington, published in 2019 and referred to a few days ago. But a correction, that author actually said that half the priests in the Vatican are gay. I think it’s widely acknowledged that some cardinals are. Most are celibate.

        There are 252 Cardinals at the moment. Only 135 are eligible to vote in the Papal election which implies that there are 117 who are over the age of 80.

      Priests ain’t supposed to fuck anybody, they’ve taken a vow of celibacy. Maybe one day the Catholic Church will get into the real world, surely a happily married priest has a more balanced view of the world than a frustrated celibate one. But that’s another discussion!
      Assuming that priests adhere to their vow of celibacy it really doesn’t matter if they’re straight, gay, or anything in between?

      It’s problem if the organization is predominantly homosexual and a 50% homosexual organization is massively homosexual.
      Once members within the hierarchy are seen as possible sexual partners they will behave in different ways than if they aren’t.
      Who gets promoted? Who gets the plum jobs who gets disciplined? Who gets favors?
      Will it be Jimmy Sweetcheeks or Johnny Ugly ?
      Sexual rivalry and jealously is probably the fastest way to tear an organization apart.

How is it that religions can get away with saying to their people all sorts of instruction that the general public and any secular organisation is not allowed to.       And it used to be beneficial to have an afterlife to convince young men to sacrifice themselves in battle for the good of the tribe/nation. Religions that did this tended to conquer and spread their genes faster and further. It’s a an evolutionarily powerfully psychological tendency that sees those with strong martial religious belief more likely to win out by murdering those without such beliefs in warfare. Eg Aesir following Vikings smacking over northern Europe or Mohammed following Moors smacking over southern Europe.

    The Catholic church specifically has existed for longer than any nation on earth today. All male groups can go places and do things that mixed or all female groups just can’t and celibate priests, monks and mystics have existed in every culture and for as long as anyone can tell.
    It is the modern Liberal mind that thinks it has escaped from history and reality.

  McCulloch stated that Catholicism does not have one single ordained woman priest. As to the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality, your point about the sexuality of half of the priests only serves to point out a gross contradiction between the doctrine and expectations of the Church of it’s ‘flock’ and what it tolerates amongst it’s own priesthood. Homosexuality is most definitely considered by the church to be a grave sin.
  I don’t believe McCulloch set out to attack any one religion over another. Rather, he is making the point that small sects like Destiny and ‘the Two by Twos’ are sitting ducks for attacks by an MSM that doesn’t have the guts to level the exact same criticisms at the established ‘respectable’ religions.
  It seems to me that it is a quirk of human nature that people will see their own mainstream religion (which invariably began as a small cult) as perfectly respectable, while some new embryonic religion is a ‘weird cult). The MSM understand this and therefore feel emboldened to go after the groups that don’t enjoy strong public support.

This video by Jordan Peterson on low IQ is interesting. I have read comments on it and although it is not 100% accurate about the Army tests, it is roughly accurate.

There are some jobs that require IQ tests. I think this should be requited for our MPs. They would not be ineligible with a low IQ but there results would be made public. I doubt is any MPs from the right would have a low IQ. There probably would not be any in Labour. However, I think we would find some in the Greens and Te Pāti Māori.

  What do you call an incompetent lawyer? Your honour. If you cant make it in the real world you go into public service. As a result the public service does not attract the best and brightest. Those with high iqs get on with life and build their empires while those who don’t run for politics or major of Wellington or go work for the state. There are a few exceptions but not many.

  One does not have to work long with STEM doctorates to know that much of academia is a sheltered workshop for the gifted. They may have exceedingly high IQs, but many have little or no interpersonal skills. The problem with a bald number like IQ is it don’t tell you much about the person’s relationship skills, empathy or social ability. That can be a lot more important for work as MP. How do they relate to their constituents? Can they represent them and their concerns.
  For MPs, the more important factor is what have they done outside school/ university/ political party organisations? A lot currently in the House have no knowledge of the real world – look at their CVs. That is why they can’t tell us of their successes – they haven’t any. So they try to invent hardship or identity politics to put them higher up the victimhood index.

    I am not suggesting that those with high IQs would make good MPs but that those with low IQs are not suited for the job of MPs.
    
    The problem of people with low IQs relates to more than just MPs. Many are unemployable. How should they be treated? I think with compassion. The left disagrees. They insist that those of very low IQ get the minimum wage, which means they are unemployed.

      Your reply is a significant change from your original premise. But yes, I agree with your current point. The worst thing the Labour Party did to the intellectually handicapped of this country was make their employers pay minimum wage. As sure as night follows day, all the sheltered workshops closed. Not even an unpredictable occurence. So the people that were in them enjoying their menial jobs and employment now wander the streets. Who benefitted from that change? Certainly not those workers.

      I have mentioned here before, rellies in Melbourne on the dole were required to do 15 hours a week voluntary work, under supervision. One worked at a large local council plant nursery. Many of the ‘volunteers’ were really not employable but enjoyed their job and became very good. Repetitive activities mostly, that would bore others to sobs.
      
      I’d like to see a pilot or two here.

        There were two “sheltered workshops” here just a few years ago.
        One involved propagating plants for sale.
        The other was making floor rugs out of carpet remnants – for sale.
        Both were closely supervised by suitable adults.
        Then the government of the day, and possibly union zealots, decreed that this activity was unsuitable and “demeaning” for the IHC people involved – so they were shut down.
        Publicity at the time indicated that those involved with these were heartbroken that their “workplaces” had gone and couldn’t understand what they had done wrong.
        The authorities said the workers there had to be assimilated into “real jobs in the community” and be paid “real wages”. Which was easier said than done.
        Many of the people, young and old, who were shut out of their “jobs” at the workshops, lost the independence and comradeship they had come to value.
        But, government knows best, eh.

        Discontinued for the usual reasons
        * loud complaints from left wing groups calling it slave labour

        One significant change occurred in 1990 when the Community Wage was introduced. This was essentially a “work-for-the-dole” scheme where unemployed people could be compelled to undertake work in their community for an additional payment of $21 a week.
        
        One of the side benefits of this scheme(personal observation) was it gave unemployed a boost in confidence.
        One participant, I knew, couldn’t get a job (low self esteme) after 6 months helping out in a supportive environment. Went out(boosted confidence) got herself a real job and very (deservedly) proud of her accomplishment.
        
        The Labour/unions killed the scheme. The BS slogan was that it took jobs away from workers.
        NO IT FKING DIDNT!

    Your view of academia is outdated. Many of today’s STEM academics are excellent communicators and self-promoters who are good at persuasion. They have to be, because academia is so darn competitive. STEM academics compete fiercely for jobs, for research contracts, and for research students.

      I think cmm answered it downthread. The best and brightest get out as soon as they can. They get out and go into industry. That is where the cutting edge, intellectual stimulation and the money is. Universities are apparently full of departmental squabbling, wokery and backstabbing. Why employ a number of Uni refugees.
      However, I will grant you that some are very good communicators. How many are people who have made their mark outside, then gone back in to do research on a subject that really interested them? I know a number like that, or are on the fringes.

    Agree about STEM grads, also other technical staff. However, there is a critical role for those managing them in the workplace. Basically value expertise and interpret between parties, including the business.
    
    Once, when I managed a large technical group, two highly qualified and experienced folk were daggers drawn, no agreement on the horizon. Part tech, part boundaries. I called them to my office, shut the door. After a long duologue, taking loudly right past each other, tension slowly began to fade. After an hour, agreement reached, hands shaken.     A agree. Some of the world’s worst tyrants had/have high IQs. Someone can have a high IQ, and be a total narcissist.
    
    Records of IQs of tyrant in the NAZI regime were very high.
    
    IQ is about pattern recognition, not ethics.
    
    Tests for humility, lie detector tests, random drug tests, and a proven history in successfully running a business or holding down a successful career in a non govt, real trade business would be a good start.
    
    In order to loyally represent your electorate, you have to have humility in spades.

    I would say that most of the really gifted STEM people work in industry.
    
    There was a time when academia was at the forefront of STEM, but these days the really important research is mainly coming from industry.
    
    Of course STEM is a very wide field. Particle physics etc is more academic but almost all the engineering and technology development is happening far away from academia.

      In my 20s I was sent for IQ testing by RNZAF prior to being accepted to a computer programming job.
      Result 134.
      
      As many here will attest, that doesn’t make me any smarter than most KB commenters..chortle..
      
      What it did give me was a tendency to ask why and look at an alternative view when trying to understand any situation/problem.
      Critical thinking?
      
      Hence, me not accepting propaganda/Media releases/Government proclamations at face value.

      For decades they all went to Labour.

        Txs, you are correct – NZF gained all the Maori seats in 1996 for one term.
        
        Since the Labour Party first came to power in 1935, however, it has dominated the Māori electorates. For a long period this dominance owed much to Labour’s alliance with the Rātana Church, although the Rātana influence has diminished in recent times. In the 1993 election, however, the new New Zealand First party, led by Winston Peters – who himself held the general seat of Tauranga from 1984 to 2005 – gained the Northern Māori seat (electing Tau Henare to Parliament), and in the 1996 election New Zealand First captured all the Māori electorates for one electoral term.         Not even the speakers job. It’s up to the privileges committee in their next meeting to come up with a recommendation for the house to then decide on.
        
        I think it is becoming more and more obvious that people have little idea what the role of the speaker is and just what his powers are and aren’t, and the rules he has to follow.
        
        They aren’t going to get kicked out of parliament, they aren’t going to get banned. The recommendation for Henare was that he apologise. I expect the committee will recommend the same for the Māori party members.
        
        Ferris, who also decided to not go to the committee investigation into his actions was also only recommended to apologise.

  Chuck – high IQ’s do not necessarily relate to competence or even common sense.
  
  Back in the early 80’s while at a BNZ branch we employed the Dux of a well known and well regarded Boys High School. He was probably 18 and headed for the Banks Head Office on a Scholarship or similar but, first they wanted him to have 6 months of branch experience.
  
  He was hopeless because he had no practical awareness and required constant supervision for his day to day duties.
  
  Having said that he was a hell of a nice kid, just out of his depth in a practical sense.
  
  I transferred out of the branch before his 6 months was up and heard about a year later that at 19 he took his own life.
  
  I have no idea why but, the above probably gives a good indication.

  Peterson isn’t just talking intelligence in the video he’s also using his other favorite personality metrics in his discussion”conscientiousness, “”stress tolerance,” yada yada. Also IQ is only measuring certain aspects of intelligence. It’s not always a helpful metric.
  
  In general terms he makes some sense in terms of certain of those attributes being best in certain situations.
  It’s way too reductive to start pointing at certain parties and judging IQ, that’s not what the video is about.

  But cycles have no registration plate to identify them by for the tolling cameras. And even if they did, cyclist sees cameras ahead, lifts bike into road (if lifting even needed!), rides past the camera on the road then reverts to cycle track when free to do so.

Why is the comparison between Maori and “Pakeha’, seven years, rather than with Asians who last roughly twice that age difference compared to Maori?
How are you going to define Maori, and if genetics are involved is it a clean-cut “either/or”, and will it mean earlier American history like cotton plantation terms: half caste, quarter and so on?
And what did Kiri Allen’s experience of a 13 percent chance of surviving cancer as a Maori wahine show when she is now cancer clear.

And what of dis-ease causes, when emotion has quite a bit to do with body response and is health not directly that much to do with any Maori malaise?
Does living in 1840 rather than 2025 have anything to do with it or telling each Maori child soon and they can korero that they are victims of colonisation and oppression – and mentally colonise then again.
And will Maori cultural incursion and over-reach lower all our expectations, to depress life expectancy of non-Maori too?

  It shows she could be bothered turning up to appointments and procedures.
  
  Maori medical no shows are a huge problem. Guilty white liberals can’t wrap their heads around addressing that issue! Free taxis don’t work. Free KFC either.
  
  Maybe the only way you can make Maori turn up, is to send the police to arrest people and bring them into the hospital or appointment.

    Surfing, my next comment may confirm that I have become a racist.
    That conclusion, the racist remark, I think is to do with a concept I had of truth, and for example: the Ardern Labour-Led Government raising Maori up, echoing 1930s Germany, to a level of Aryan Exceptionalism, was I consider: not true when facts tell that the tail end of Maori are in almost all the lower social demography or statistics.
    
    Or TVNZ’s selective Maori usage is in itself racist, and has also now become so sloppy as to mispronounce the language, and so glib as to neither help those learning the language nor normalise it, and is an affront those who are fluent, by having a few phrases in Maori and then plunge back into English again for the majority of an item, that is to actually inform someone who may not understand it.
    
    So that too is basically untrue in the sense that the lie grates on me, as does the war dance haka used 24/7 and war never follows it, so it too is rather meaninglessly untruthful with such wrongly culturally appropriated common use. So that all these things tend to be observed with a certain instinctive cringe value or embarrassment for Maori.
    
    Sort of crept up on me, like Pavlov’s Maori dog. “They” have moulded (Maoried) me this way, just as the oft quoted mantra “Māori are more likely to be overweight, depressed, homeless, incarcerated and uneducated according to these disturbing statistics …”, Kelvin Davis [1] has been heard so often and in so many ways that many believe it, and become the negative side of the argument (above) that makes my non-believing racism.
    
    So back to the “racist” comment that this foreshadows.
    Why not publicise that “Health services are there for Maori, as they are for all non-Maori, except shy Pacifika – come and get them, OR DIE.
    Like covid injections (before everyone decided they were indeed useless?) – HERE THEY ARE, COME AND GET THIS STUFF, or see how the virus cuts down intergenerational abodes, the immunity-compromised and with other comorbilities – like in Italy, France and Hawaiians and Island People decimated or worse in Los Angeles. Anyhow, COME GET IT – WERE YOU NOT ONCE WARRIORS?

A German word for a Green electricity flaw: dunkelflaute, or “dark stillness.”

Renewable sources generated 47 per cent of Germany’s electricity in the first three months of 2025, down from 56 per cent in the first three months of 2024.

The problem, says the Wall Street Journal, was that February and March in Germany had unusually low wind, and rainfall was light. Solar power was up because of a sunnier March, but this month in Germany usually has short daylight hours. So not up enough.

The description of the conditions: dunkelflaute, which in sound isn’t too far from dumb flakes.

Germany’s new Government plans to build 20 gigawatts of natural-gas fired generation stations over the next five years.

Germany hopes to close its biggest lignite-powered generators by 2030. Yes, lignite. Southland contains enough of this brown coal to provide all of NZ ‘s electricity for four or so centuries.

Simple story about a pensioner who transferred money from UK to NZ where the money ended up in the wrong account. Short story, recipient spent most of it, Westpac doesnt admit responsibility.

Pensioner goes to local MP who is fromt he National Party – story has two very short paragraphs.

Manwhile local Labour list MP throws her two bits in resulting in five paragraphs and a large portrait to boot. There is no reason for there to be such a large imbalance in content from each party.

Seriously NZ Herald, you couldnt be more blatant in your promotion of Labour – you thought no one would notice, but we did.

I see Stuff is back to their old tricks, now not a day goes by without at least one article, frequently more, making a meal out of a perceived Trumpian injustice.

And this is in the total absence of any articles whatsoever, that I’ve seen, giving any illumination to the good stuff Trump’s government is delivering or planning to deliver for US citizens.

A couple of other observations.

1. The articles are almost always the work of overseas writers, Stuff staff neither have the will or ability apparently.

2. This comes after what I perceived as a lull in their anti-Trump hit pieces immediately following the election, or at least they were balanced with a few positive stories. Good habits die hard it seems and they’re back to their old ways.

Stuff, as a private concern, are free to publish what they like of course – and at times I’m actually very pleased they do. Their rivers of anti-Trump pieces reveal even more the hypocrisy and latent authoritarianism of the Left, with Bonber Bradbury and many, many other lefties calling for some sort of government intervention to prevent the rumoured Board of Directors shake-up at NZME and change of editorial direction at the Herald etc. They’re happy when private media organisations take a lefty line, they have no complaints then, but object like screaming lunatics when another private media organisation is possibly moving to a more conservative viewpoint.

Then it’s all evil and sinister and must be stopped.

Anyway, just some observations.

Child abuse statistics, Lindsay Mitchell’s recent report, the levels of absentee fathers and numerous other key statistics suggest otherwise – and we need look no further than the statistics for the Chinese in New Zealand, or the Indians to see those families actually walking the talk with respect to treating their kids as precious taonga.

Just to be clear, this is not an anti-Maori hot piece, it is rather to point out the absolute crap being spouted by our so-called Maori community leaders, who are desperately doing everything they can to obscure and divert from the clear evidence that Maori need to step up themselves, and not look to blame others for their failings.

  The school lunch thing has been politicised to such an extent that it now needs to be withdrawn and reassessed.
  At the moment, it would not matter what was in the lunches, whether they were hot, cold, cheap, expensive, tasty, delivered on time or anything else.
  It has been a godsend for the anti coalition activists who have used every aspect they can to
  undermine it for political gain.
  Unless there is an end to the current agitation, it will continue until the next election – and dopey, ungrateful adults who believe the hype will use it as a valid reason to vote socialist.

    It was a government policy item – for whatever reason. They gave the job to Seymour who completely duffed it up. But we all cheer Seymour for duffing up a policy that we disapprove of that was supported by National. Or was it?
    
    And if it wasn’t, why did Luxon et al not just can it and push the Marmite sandwich solution … ? Or not even bother?
