The brilliant plan for Wellington transport
Stuff has details of the transport plan by the Government for Wellington. It is brilliant. The noisy people against are a small minority. Many polls have shown strong support for increasing the capacity of the Mt Vic and Terrace tunnels. The same people fought the inner city bypass for years, and today it is entirely uncontroversial and has improved getting through the city considerably.
The key details are:
- Four laning SH1 between Kilbirnie and Hataitai, eliminating the massive traffic jams you get when the lanes merge at Kilbirnie.
- A second Mt Vic tunnel for eastbound traffic, and the current one becomes westbound traffic only
- Upgrading the Basin Reserve so North-South traffic is separated from East-West traffic.
- An extra third lane on Karo Drive and Vivian Street
- A second Terrace tunnel for southbound traffic and the existing one becomes northbound only
What this basically delivers is four lanes on SH1 from the airport to Otaki. It will be hugely hugely popular, once delivered.
