Trans surgery helps some not all

The Finnish study appears to be very high quality as Finland’s health data is mandatory with no opt out. So they have tracked 2,000 youth over 25 years and found:

Among adolescents who underwent medical gender reassignment, psychiatric morbidity increased markedly during follow-up — rising from 9.8% to 60.7% in feminising gender reassignment and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising gender reassignment.

This cuts across the narrative that if you don’t allow adolescents to change gender, their risk of suicide increases. This study found the opposite.

To be clear this is not an argument against adults being able to change their gender identity through hormones and/or surgery. Of course they should be able to.

But when it comes to those under 18, it indicates at a minimum a correlation between undergoing medical gender reassignment and greater psychiatric distress. So great caution is needed.
