Slaying the Billboard Ban
April 30th, 2007 at 6:38 am by David FarrarThe NZ Herald reports on fashion designer Denise L’Estrange-Corbet who has savaged the proposed billboard ban for Auckland (inner) City.
“We will no longer have billboards to inform us of what’s happening in our city; no adverts telling us of products and what new series is on the TV.
“Nothing to make us laugh. Just nothing. Just plain, boring nothing.”
She said losing the billboard revenue could force her to sell her building – a former church she has renovated – to a developer and take her business overseas.
“I refuse to take my legal billboard down.
“You are meddling with people’s livelihoods and that is not part of your job description … [which is] ensuring Auckland is a great place to live instead of trying to destroy it with mediocrity.”
Wonderful phrase – destroying it with mediocrity.

Selma: Didn’t take long for an angry lefty to start smearing someone they’ve previously championed.
I’m curious why Denise should surrender her long held private property rights for the aesthetic wishes of a crabby city councillor? What financial price should she personally pay in order to keep the invasive and loony left in Auckland happy?
Vote:April 30th, 2007 at 9:25 am
Wow Selma, so girls under ten should not be subjected to sexual pressures? Actually, I agree, but I wonder, given you’re a lefty, how far will this new found consideration for the sexual mores of our youth will extend. You’d have to be sincere about this wouldn’t you? I mean, your not just using this as a convenient argument to undermine Denise’s position are you?

Miss Pointy head Corbett is only interested in the money from the billboard on her roof.
“You are meddling with people’s livelihoods “
She was the one who defended the outrageous sexual T shirts , which she was profiting from.
No contrition at all.
She thinks its OK to sell clothes for 10 year old girls saying SLUT.
You are meddling with people’s livelihoods
The irony is that Le Strange-Corbett is the antithesis of elegant appearance and beauty.

No ones forced to buy them Sel…but people will be forced to take down THEIR billboards off of THEIR property..get it now? Oh wait you are a Lefty and get off on threats and bullying….my mistake.

The kinds of arguments Le Strange-Corbett makes are nothing new. The curiously hysterical, nay – rabid – tone is odd though (are you sure it’s not possible to muzzle a chihuahua?). Banning unfettered advertising in public space should be thought through. I’ve worked in advertising for over 20 years and don’t feel that regulating outdoor advertising would be the end of the world. In fact it might just be a good thing.
I have serious concerns for D le SC if, in the absence of billboards she would have nothing to make her laugh. A glance in the mirror should suffice – figuratively speaking.
The legendary ad-man Howard Gossage had plenty to say about billboards – worth reading – I have posted on my blog about the topic here:

James the threats AND Bullying came from L’S-C
She said losing the billboard revenue could force her to sell her building – a former church she has renovated – to a developer and take her business overseas.
“To a developer” – who cares? ( by the way I work for them)
Good riddance!
Interesting that her real business doesnt seem to make any money and the billboard is keeping her afloat
(So much for creating wealth)
Sounds like sexual exploitation of children wasnt a money spinner for her either.
Those who sell them are far worse since they are ones getting money for it. Just like those who sell videos they make exploiting children
I know what words I would put put on T shirt with her image

but L’estrange-Corbet has had SO MUCH government funding… to take her label to london fashion week numerous times, & grow it to the success it is today.
when one application for yet more funding was turned down, she made similar threats: to take her high-falutin’ label offshore.
maybe she forgot that the taxpayer dollar can only prop up your business for so long, before you really should pay your own way without having a hissy fit about it.

Shit gretel, with an attitude like that it’s no wonder I can’t see evidence of a Hansell. Yeah, I’ll come to her defense. You lefties hand out money to all and sundry and then when someone accepts the largesse and is successful you start screaming blue murder when she protects her property. If her business was such a dog when you gave her the dough, why didn’t you check it our thoroughly? You wouldn’t bloody know how to, that’s why. You idiots only know how to dish other prople’s money out. You don’thave a clue how to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Remember Wananga and Sovereign Yaghts? Seen any boats built lately Gretel?
Tell you what we’ll do. You’re in a gummint job? Well I think it’s time you gave back some of the salary and bonus you’ve been skulking off with while you spend your day blogging so we’ll cut off 20% of your house value by banning you from taking in a border to help pay the mortgage. That will improve the tone of your neighbourhood no end. Oh dear. You mean you won’t be able to pay the mortgage and your house will be sold up? Well don’t worry. You’ve already done exactly the same thing it to the lady who is the subject of this post.

Yeah, and me makes three Gretel. Even if its true that her business currently relied on a billboard to help the overall bottom line – so what? What specifically prevents the owner of a fashion house from also owning a building and seeking to maximise a yield?
Denise L’estrange-Corbet is a creative. Perhaps she sees advertising as also a part of the creative industry in Auckland, and something worth protecting.
As for Selma Bouvier’s crass comments regarding what she’d like to call DLC, well, free speech and all that. But I suggest the t-shirt would say a lot more about you than it would about DLC.

Selma…..Perhaps that lady was trying to prepare the children for life after GOFF’s proposal to reduce the age of sexual consent to 12. I wonder if after the signs have disappeared the Council will then decide turn off the neon signs.

The facts are Le Strange-Corbet was exploiting children by selling sexually explicit T shirts.
For that alone she deserves all the shit thrown at her.
Calling it creative is a disgrace!
Her shrill and grasping views seem to fit her image as a personally unattractive badly dressed flogger of tat.
Vote:There are many gracious and talented ( and dare say elegant) fashion designers that NZ can be proud of.
This woman isn’t one of them.

Supreme judge of fashion Selma Bouvier has spoken. Please all remove any Le Strange-Corbet garments from your (or your childrens) wardrobes… they are offence to dear leader and to maintain ownership of them is SEDITION.
Vote:April 30th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
I am surprised that one set of (crass) t-shirts condemns a woman and her business to deserve all the shit thrown at her.
I think it’s a little unfair to judge an entire person’s business history on a subset of one season’s clothing.
As for your attack on her “shrill and grasping views” plus the fact that she is a”personally unattractive badly dressed flogger of tat”, well, I wouldn’t throw the word bitch around if I were you, as you seemed to suggest a few posts higher.

Why don’t you just cut L’Estrange-Corbet and Francis Hooper a big fat cheque now, and save them the trouble of suing you over ‘Sewer’ Bouvier’s increasingly unhinged and grossly defamatory ranting?
I’m not really moved to drop any cash into the tills at World, but methinks Frau Boofhead really needs to get out of the house more – perhaps spend some time volunteering at her local Rape Crisis or Refuge. The reality check might calm her down a wee bit.

Selma, are you a nutter? When you’re in business , you’re driven by greed. That is why you have things around you like cellphone , TV, cars, clothes, aeroplanes, blah, blah, blah… Without capitalist producers with the likes of Denise, Stephen Tindal, Bob Jones, Bill Gates, etc, etc, you wouldn’t have clothes to wear, windows operating systems for you to use at home for posting your anti-wealth creation views here. When the productive people in the society such as Denise and the likes have to ask permission from the unproductive leechers such as yourself and the Auckland City councilors in order to produce, then you know it gonna hinder economic productivity.
Let me ask you. What do you produce for the society which makes you think that Denise is greedy? If Intel wasn’t greedy, then you wouldn’t have a computer to enjoy today. Do you enjoy using a computer , a cell-phone or driving your car ? These things are produced by productive people in society, not by leftist & socialist unproductive leechers like yourself.

It is free-choice, do you get it? Children are not forced to go and buy her T-shirts. You’re argument is like a 5 year old.
Do you see most 10 year old out there carrying a cell-phone? Yes most of them do and I can assure you that Nokia didn’t force them to buy their phones. Do you see the point I am making or not? If you don’t then I think you’re so daft, then perhaps, you might want to enrol at your local kindy for some basic education about free choice.

You make a good point, I think if the council offered appropriate compensation for revoking a permit it would be reasonable and then we can all move on.
It’s good you didn’t take cheap shots at Denise L’Estrange-Corbet’s designs or Denise L’Estrange-Corbet’s herself, otherwise your point would have been lost as well.
Think of council revoking your right to have a sky dish mounted on your house that is visible from the street. Sadly having a sky dish visible from the street is the only place sky can be received on your house…
You had a permit for it, they just changed their minds. How would you feel ? OK now add in that you relied on that feed for your business survival….

No, Denise is boring nothing. She clearly epitomises the “me culture” and needs empty materialism to ensure her life has meaning (albeit fake).
She should pay a visit to her local library rather than watching soap series and informercials on TV all weekend while waiting in vain for something to satisfy her pointless personal life.

Let me give you a tip. Greedy businsses never make it. Some crash (Enron), other just keep losing their customers. Furthermore if greed was the motivation, initiatives such as health & safety and sustainable development wouldn’t be commonplace in todays corporate world.

LOL… Golly, Michael, I have to agree with you there – it would be so much better if the plebs would just shut the fuck up about local government activities that impact on their “direct fiduciary interests” — like rates, user-charges, roading and public transport, civic amenities, environmental issues and so forth.
Instead of taking a metaphorical dump on L’Estrange-Corbet, ask yourself why more people don’t participate in local government ‘consultative processes’ (which they’re required to go through by law) instead of bitching afterwards.
I think it’s a pertinent question when we’re less than six months from local government elections given the embarrasingly low turnouts last time.

No, I run my own small software business and I am aiming to grow it very rapidly by seeking investors to come in. Take notice of the terms grow rapidly or high growth, and that means only one thing to me. I am GREEDY. If I am not greedy, then why bother to expand or make it grow. Why not just run it as a one man band? No, I want to grow and perhaps sell it in a few years time or list it in the stock exchange. I intend to do that because I am greedy. Is it a bad thing? No, not at all.
ALL businesses or majority of them want growth, and there is no other meaning of the word growth but greed, whatever your interpretation is.
Here are some definitions of the term GREED from internet online dictionary:
1#) excessive desire to acquire or possess more
2#) an inclination to want things
3#) strong desire to acquire and possess
Now, the criteria for business growth satisfies all 3 above. Look at IBM , Microsoft and Oracle and big corporations they acquire firms all the time and they never gonna stop anytime soon. Are they showing signs of excessive desire to acquire or possess more? Yes they do. Are they greedy? Yes they are. Is that a bad thing? No it is not. That’s what make them survive in a tough competitive business environment of today. Google has just announced they are acquiring DoubleClick for a price of more than $2 billions. Is Google greedy? Yes. Is a bad thing? No. Google wants to grow more and that is what business is all about. That is growth over time and not losing money over time.
As for Enron’s case, the management committed fraud and that lead to their downfall. Business go down from time to time because of bad decision making but that is what business risk is all about. Take the risk and expect a chance of high return. You have to differentiate between fraud and greed. Bill Gates does not commit fraud, but he is greedy. He has to be or otherwise IBM or Oracle and Larry Ellison would kill them in business competition.
Vote:May 1st, 2007 at 12:24 am
Wicket, you said I need to differentiate between fraud and growth, I say you need to differentiate between greed and growth.
As per your definition, greed = excess. Too much excess and the bubble goes pop!
As for your examples, market consolidation and business growth is hardly synonymous with greed. I think you are taking the definition a bit too far there.
Anyway, at the end of the day it is a matter of interpretaion and semantics.
