NZPA through Stuff report that Sue Kedgley will again be the Green Party candidate for Wellington Central.

WC is the highest party vote in NZ for The Greens. I thought they might stand Russel Norman there this time as he is a co-leader, and would attract even more attention.

National makes it selection tonight. I’ll blog it when known. I think it will be very close.

good luck to sue kedgely there..

she has been a competent performer/mp during this last term..

and has had a high media profile..

and her (safe food) messages resonate with a lot of people..

it would be very ‘cool’ to have her as the mp for wellington central..

(i long wanted/agitated for nandor to stand in auckland central..

    (sigh..!..)

    phil(whoar.co.nz)

(whew..!..i managed to get through that..without a sideways snarl/sneer at norman..!

    (my therapist will be pleased..!..)

Except he’s not an ACT MP. At least Hide had the principles to rule out ever joining National when being interviewed about it before the 2005 election.

So Sue K is going to stand in the seat that returns the highest % of the Green vote yet we all know she does not have a chance in hell of actually be elected as the constituency representative.
Despite this she will still more than likely still be in the house, should the unthinkable happen and we see a Green/Labour coalition she and her party will have a huge say in how this country is run despite only receiving around 5-7% of the total vote.

Can anybody tell me how this is in any way democratic?

  5. casual watcher (289) Says:

This is off topic but just been out in the car and all the talk on ZB is that Cullen will take GST off Food and Energy at August 1. Energy to include fuel, electricity and gas. That will win some votes with the sheeple and even up the numbers.

  6. stephen (4,058) Says:

big bruv, I would hardly say NZ First and UF have had “a huge say in how this country is run”, so why would that apply to the Greens?

Yeah, no way Kedgely is going to win, but maybe she’ll try to get the Greens’ profile high enough to increase the party vote.
    Last election it was:

    PARTY, VOTES, PERCENTAGE
    HOBBS, Marian (LAB) 20,199 49.67
    BLUMSKY, Mark (NAT) 14,019 34.47
    KEDGLEY, Sue (GRE) 3,737 9.19
    FRANKS, Stephen (ACT) 1,254 3.08

    and

    PARTY, VOTES, PERCENTAGE
    Labour Party 17,936 43.35
    National Party 13,513 32.66
    Green Party 6,530 15.78
    UF 1,068 2.58
    ACT 848 2.05

Casual Watcher – a change of this sort would need months of notice – NZ businesses have never had to gear up for differential GST – Labour would be better off to pay each beneficiary and those eligible for ‘working for families’ an assessed amount to cover such GST payments.

  8. casual watcher (289) Says:

Peterwn – August 1 for announcement I assume. Since when has administration detail and consultation slowed Sullen down anyway ?

Since when did Cullen care about giving sufficient notice (eg Kiwisaver employer contributions).

And anyway, he can promise whatever he likes, and sort it out later (remember, its election year).

That said: The beauty about GST is that its comprehensive and there are no exceptions. VAT etc are painful – especially where you have ridiculous cases where (for example) one type of food is exempt, and another not.

Thats technically a tax cut. So those who vote for tax cuts are sheeple?
That would make Kiwiblog NZ’s largest station!

  11. Leg Break (88) Says:

I hope Franks gets the nomination ahead of Quinn.

Anyone involved in the scandalous reappointment of Henry doesn’t deserve to be in the house; there’s enough corruption there as it is.

  12. Nicholas O'Kane (166) Says:

What time can we expect a result for National nomination?
What are your thoughts Dave? I lean towards Franks, but don’t know much about the other two. Given that its a safe labour seat, the list rankings will be more important.

Perhaps James W is privy to information we don’t have, and has just let slip on Kiwiblog that there’s a plot to seed National with Act Fifth Columnists ;-)

Yet another failing of MMP. It’s one thing that by giving our party vote to a particular party we end up with a List loaded with lacklustre lickspittles chosen for their willingness to prostitute their principles and do what the leadership tell them. But it’s quite another when we end up with MPs whom the electorate has explicitly rejected in favour of someone else.

(I’m not having a go at Kedgley personally – in fact I think phil u’s comment above is a reasonable summation of her – but at the system which allows this to happen).

Yes Rex, how many of those morons got in Parliament is beyond my comprehension.

I hope the Wellington Central candidate procedure follows “due process.” Big headache in another electorate selection process eh John !

I may end up being a voting delegate, despite my best efforts, so I won’t comment in advance.

    Russel who?
